Personally am not a fan of shorts they are too similar to tiktok except that the majority of them are just people using them as an advert to their next video and I don't like or use tiktok either I'd just rather wait for the full video to be released from the channels I'm subscribed to or watch any full video I might like the content of. Although your approach to them actually being usefull and not related to any future videos or just being a silly clip of someone elses work is refreshing to see, kind of like getting a cheat sheet for when you forget something you mentioned in your main channel videos and yes I see the irony in the adverts although as said its usefull information and as all techies do we forget some of the basics from time to time like what was the obscure term for this or that again or where did I see this feature before etc which has probably contributed to the rise in views of your channel also. I think the only downside of your method was not telling the regular viewers that this was an experiment at the end as doing so would have opened yourself up to get more data at the end by creating a pole or some sort of quick questionair for both regular and new viewers as to what we thought of the your new presenting style. All in all though to sum it up I think we learned that if you did compare your analytics to a similar subbed channel that purely put shorts advertising their next video against yours, yours would come out on top almost guaranteed. Excellently produced as always hopefully yourself reads this and maybe gets some extra insight as to what shorts could mean to others like myself.
I bought an electric Yamaha piano when the pandemic lockdown hit. I spent about a half hour each day with my morning coffee just learning how to do a little bit of something. This past year, I wrote, arranged and recorded this song on piano: ruclips.net/video/ab_PeNpPf5g/видео.html
@@Daniel_Batal Haha! Yes, I heard the tune when you unleashed it! Great idea about learning a tiny bit per day, I've been putting it off because it's just so daunting... I'll start tomorrow with your idea, THANKS!!🔥🧨💪🏽🤠👍🏽🧨🔥 (P.S. We did in fact briefly meet at VidSummit 2019)
When you changed your titles it helped FOR SURE. With the same title beginning and the same talking head/background it looked like i was getting the same video. And then when multiple showed up in one session, i thought RUclips was broken. 😂 I'm very curious about how they work over time. That's one of the HUGE benefits of longform video, they can live forever. If shorts don't, which i have feared all along, then they are not as valuable... But still worth trying.
Thank you Daniel for going the extra mile in gathering data and testing new strategies. I simply don't have enough hours in the day to do this. So your work on our behalf is very much appreciated - 😎😎
RIght on, Paul. I will say... just making and publishing a Short every day was harder than it sounds, especially when you're trying to make focused, original Shorts content that serve the needs of the viewer. I sometimes notice that many of the Creators who wrestle with Shorts are just treating them as an afterthought.
@@Daniel_Batal I think I'm in that category. I usually make a short to promote a long form video that might be flagging a bit. Maybe a dedicated shorts strategy is where I should be rather than random hit and run shorts. Great stuff as always. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment too.🤗🤗
I literally was running the same experiment at the same time. My channel is just over 1100 subs and I found EVERYTHING DB talks about to be the same for me but with proportionately less numbers. I did the experiment using clips from my listical videos but still it became a grind. Drop off after stopping happened just as DB shows but I actually saw a 20% drop in new subs but no change at all in lost subs. Thanks DB for this videos and I did learn a bunch of Resolve tips that are already making an impact on my long form edits
I got here because of your shorts! All of what you said was things I have been trying to figure out. Your expertise in creation and also analyzing the analytics is super helpful! Thanks from a new Shorts Subscriber
@@Daniel_Batal I will be here more often as I am learning. You certainly have a great way of teaching that is clear and concise. Much Appreciated! I came from iMovie on a 19' macbook pro and am now using Resolve Free on my 15" air 16GB 512GB and I cannot believe how fast and efficient I am able to work. Thanks again!
The shorts format is perfect for detailing how to do 'a thang' in DR. When I want to do an effect, etc., the bare bones instructions is what I want. I began noticing you apart from other tutors with this approach. Possibly you were creating a niche? Keep it up. It really makes sense to have the short format for Q&A. I have serious memory loss from brain surgery. The idea of getting a 30-60 second how to works really well. I will be visiting and revisiting these quick tutorials much more often than the 10-30+minute videos that are all encompassing and I feel can be a tremendous waste of time. I really like the short and sweet approach to teaching something in bites, versus a seven coarse meal. Please keep doing the DR shorts. Thank you.
Shorts are an absolute cancer on my subscriber feed. Hate them with a passion. But this video and your experimental approach was very interesting. Great stuff!
You're not alone in that thought process. I think too many Creators started out by making Shorts with little or no value and it turned people off. I wanted to see what happened if we decided to make Shorts that were actually useful. The response I got was phenomenal.
@@Daniel_Batal it would be awesome if you made more videos on YT analytics. You are able to explain stuff that all those YT gurus just make me tired with. You know who. Thanks for the analysis, while I'm kinda leaning towards the OP, and shorts made YT quite tiktocky, after your video I might reconsider my position.
This and the Film Booth Channel are the best I’ve found for breakdowns on making good videos and editing for success. And by “good” I mean people watching for retention.
I'd love to see you do a shorts series on understanding analytics, sort of an expansion of this video, but in series form. I enjoy shorts, especially when I'm learning something new. I enjoy a long form video to get me started, and then shorts to keep me interested, engaged, and informed.
That's so great to see. I did this for my channel in March and got burnt. I definitely plan to conduct more, I just have to spend time crafting a strategy for my niche/genre. Thank you for doing this. Hoping for continued success for your channel!
Well, thanks Daniel...you just proved to me that my youtube shorts blocking extension is working like a charm. I had no idea you were posting these. I hope you still get your revenue for posting it...but I just can't bear them. I do purposefully endure youtube ads to make sure creators get their cut, even though I know how to zap them.
I love when you show charts; I understand why some people get startled and overloaded by them, but they are the best way to "talk" with RUclips and understand what it's trying to say. I was one of the people who asked you on Twitter if Shorts could alienate my usual audience, and make me lose subscribers. Doing exactly as you showed here, I noticed I lost 7 subscribers because of shorts, but in contrast that same short form content brought me 574 subscribers (I'm with 2.736 by now). The only difference is that I don't have 30 Shorts, but 137 of them right now. Some of those with 20 views, and some with more than 5.200 - still working to know why and how.
They are powerful when done strategically. It really does come down to how the audience responds. You’d think 30 Shorts all about DaVinci Resolve would all perform similarly. They didn’t. People liked some more, some less.
Funny I am a subscriber of yours, and I didn't even notice this your push on my Shorts feed. Yesterday I even looked up how to do something new in Resolve and Google sent me to one of your Shorts first. Now I have a lot of Shorts to go watch so I can improve my edits. Thank you for all this info!!!
Isn't it awesome that RUclips isn't forcing Shorts down viewer's throats anymore? I love it. It really allows Creators to make content for the people who like either type of video without worrying about pushing both of them away
As an actual Noob to Davinci I appreciated your series. The downside to me was RUclips not allowing thumbs, but since you have them all in a playlist that is super helpful. A noob request please: audio editing. Especially simple noise reduction and mute one microphone at a time. Thanks Daniel!
The most important thing in shorts to go well is the average percent views, if the average percent views are 80% + it will go well for shorts (40 sec +) for 15 sec below shorts it should be 100%+ Just check the top-performing shorts in this series and compare the average percent views matrix from other shorts.
Interesting for sure. I also did a similar experiment for 30 days (BTW, agreed, it started to wear me out) and it seems on the surface that educational content is more likely to generate "steady" views, but more entertainment or "mindless" subjects (my interpretation) seemed to fare much better overall. Show a cat falling off a TV and it probably would generate 2M views. The next test maybe fall off your chair a few times while working on Resolve tips... I'd watch it. 😂 Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to create this video.
The best thing about this views seeing how many subscribers you lose on average. It made me feel a lot better about my own loss of subscribers. It's only about 3 per month and, as much as I try to fight it, it gets to me sometimes. Thank you so much! ❤✌️
@@Daniel_Batal Thanks! And thanks for replying! You're the biggest RUclipsr I know who does it and it really made my day the two other times you've replied to me. I know it must take an insanely long time for you, and it really shows that you care about your viewers. It's so wholesome!
This was great. I'm actually using your videos to learn Resolve and I had just planned on a mini series of shorts (like 3 not 30 😅) so I appreciate both the experiment and the original subject matter ❤
I've been a long time subscriber of your channel. I had no clue you were doing a 30 day series. Not a single notification, I think I saw one or two of your shorts on the shorts shelf, but didn't connect the dots. I don't watch a lot of shorts, but geez, I've been watching enough of your long form content recently (as I'm contemplating graduating from iMovie). Truly a fail for the recommendation system.
Was it...? I actually think that was a win for the recommendation system. RUclips has said they were flooded with people screaming about how they hate Shorts and want RUclips to stop recommending them alongside long form recommendations. They've told us recently that they've worked much harder on serving Shorts to folks whose recent watch history show they really like watching Shorts. My guess is, RUclips did exactly what viewers asked. Gave my Short form content to people who fit my target audience and had shown a continued interest in watching Shorts.
@@Daniel_Batal Interesting take. I probably would have been more inclined to watch them, if I realized they 1) were recent. Many of the suggestions on the short shelf are either very old, or I've seen them before. 2) the lack of the ability to put a good thumbnail or cover for a short. 3) the lack of space for a title to let me know what it is about. You always have great insights. Thanks
Hi Daniel I have just swapped to DaVinci and I have been thankful for your shorts in my learning process. The short sharp jabs have been valuable. Thanks for doing the experiment. Loving your insights and I love you long form stuff as well
I publish shorts everyday, that help my channel a lot. My best month was last year where I took 1400 new subscribers and 1 millions views. Also I noticed a couple of shorts doing absolutely nothing for a months before skyrocketing. My best shorts reach 120k view the first hour and after nothing. Now I have to think to change the way I'm doing my shorts. Thanks for sharing your data.
Interesting results. I'm still testing daily but have started to drop off around 70 shorts. Now its every few days when I have time. However, I don't think frequency impacts the performance as much. When I slowed down on daily uploads, older shorts started to get massive boosts. Now they seem to have a life of their own whether I post or not. I'll do a follow up video to my 30 day test after I hit 100
I have found your DaVinci shorts helpful and was wondering if you have considered putting all of them together in a long form video that was broken into chapters? It would be a really handy reference guide for us noobs.
I did find those, but my thinking was that I have a watch file for long-form videos and it occurred to me that if you lumped these all into a long-form then you would also get lots of repeated views as folks like me went back time after time to look for answers to specific problems.
I'm one of the 1,300 subscribers who came here because I found you in my Shorts feed. This is your first long-form video I've watched. There are other creators in my Shorts feed who are trying to pull me over to their long-form videos and I've got to say: I like you how I know you (in my shorts feed!).
@@Daniel_Batal You know, I've been thinking about this video a lot since I watched it. It remains the only one of your long-form videos that I've watched. But I'm STILL getting DaVinci Resolve for Noobs in my shorts feed and I STILL love them. I'm emailing them to myself and bookmarking them. Please hear me representing a point of view of folks who basically only know you from that series and love it. I would really appreciate you keeping up with it.
Loved the shorts on Resolve and have used your videos to help me start to learn Resolve. Superb videos and thanks for all your content. Subscribed and watch all your videos. Thanks again!
Think you should. In fact it was your channel that made me switch to Resolve. Your basic tutorial was brilliant. Loved the style and presentation. Your shorts have enhanced knowledge. The one on backing up your projects and cache clearing was superb. Extremely insightful and useful. Simple but plugged a big hole in my knowledge. Keep the shorts coming and they build up into a great library of knowledge. Please do keep up the great work and thanks again.
Thanks. That really was my goal and although I certainly didn't do it perfectly (adjustments were made), they definitely seemed to connect on that level. No big time commitments, just a quick tip for editing. I think I might continue with that series.
Check this out. I did a 30 days experiment. Trend I found was that after my time was up on the shelf all shorts died. But here is the interesting part, Just entering a new title on the videos. Some got a second chance on the shelf. A little later I repeated this experiment but with a new structure and now all shorts got two chances on the shelf and stayed there a bit longer than the first chance. So I saw some what similar results to you. However, the negative impact was that my long form videos all stopped getting recommendations, so much attention on the shorts, many videos went to 0 impressions and stayed there. I couldn't revive them. Don't quote me but it seems like results are different between different channel sizes so it seems. Bigger channels more data for youtube to use has a different impact. Little channels with barley any data , youtube doesn't have enough for data to go by so the impact is greater. But your the expert Daniel. I'm just sharing what I've seen in my own testing. It's interesting to see how the system works. Extremely informative too!
I think RUclips is getting much better at recommending content overall. I try to encourage Creators to develop a content strategy, not just throw stuff up and see what works. The better the strategy, the better the results
@@Daniel_Batal Couldn’t agree more. But in my case specifically I lack data to make firm confident strategies. And I guess that will improve with time as the channel grows. So normally I have to test and kind of take from the test the structures that seem to work best and what topics most people gravitate too and design a strategy from that data. I don’t have much to lose at this stage being that I’m still pouring out a foundation to grow on. I need to be sturdy to give me confidence to stand on so to speak. However that’s just me haha. But I agree with you Daniel. Great to hear from you. And thank you for such great videos!
I did what I now think was crazy, which didn't work. I posted 100 shorts in 8 days. It was gruelling, to say the least. The idea was that I would promote one of my books, which had not been selling well. None of the shorts did that well. So far, the best one (about 10 days old now) has about 350 views. From the 100 shorts, I have so far put on 19 subscribers. The channel was flatlining before, as I have never really uploaded much to it. At the end of each video (basically mini bytes from the book) I held up a copy of the book and said "Buy this book today and change your life tomorrow" I now like Daniel's saying ASKHOLE :-) The upshot of this ..... I did not sell one single book so far from this exercise. Now..... Daniels's shorts do something basic... They offer VALUABLE quick tips on how to do something. In short (no pun intended), they provide USE VALUE, which is ironic as my book is 100% focused on achieving success by providing USE VALUE to others. Hope this helps someone to either save a lot of time or learn what NOT to do.. For me, what Daniel did here has extreme potential value going forward. Many Thanks
Great insights there, Martin! I definitely think that we, as Creators, have to think first and foremost about the viewer experience. We need to provide a great experience for every viewer with each Short, provide value with every Short and give the viewer a reason to watch another video (of any length) from us. I don't believe Shorts are right for every channel but I do think they're right for most. When people tell me they tried Shorts and they don't work, I always think to myself, "Shorts work, your strategy didn't".
@@Daniel_Batal Just a side note. It was through you that I looked at Resolve. I was using FCPX, but as I was not a frequent user, I never really got on with it. I used screenflow a lot. Then POW watched you on the NOOB videos, and I was hooked. I did all 100 of the shorts on resolve. The fastest way to edit and super software. I have just ordered the speed editor, which will be here in a few days, and it comes with Studio, so it's a great deal. I must say that Resolve has re-ignited my love of video, as I no longer feel 90% of my effort is fighting with software. Keep up the good work. I am watching closely :-)
I'm afraid the inner workings of utube are beyond me but I really enjoyed the shorts. On the backend of the Filmora disaster the content choice was a smart move. Scaffolding learning.... Great approach always. Love the channel. 👍
Thanks Daniel for the great insight into how shorts might work on our channels. I have been publishing shorts off and on and they have also been a subscriber boon to my channel - most of my channel is devoted to long form content and lives. I have 2 shorts that I published over 1 year ago and they are still receiving traffic, but 80-90% of that is from search with the rest being mostly from the shorts shelf. Funny thing is, the graph of their views looks fairly exponential at this point that they are gaining more views now than they did when they were first published. They are also driving subscribers to my channel as well (20% of new subscribers come from those 2 shorts). I am interested to see how much traffic your shorts receive after 1 year of being published and from where the traffic arrives to watch them.
That’s awesome! I have one short that drives about 800 views every day consistently from Search. I think there are a lot of potential options for growth that should be added to the discussion
I've been looking forward to this video even more than seeing the next installment of the DaVinci Resolve shorts series. (Those were all quite helpful, BTW 😊 ) Interesting that it didn't have a negative impact on your subscribers or on your long-form content.
My overall long form content increased in views. (Not specifically from the Shorts) Some of that is from topic alignment but mostly because that content just did what it was supposed to do and connected with the target audience
You should do an updated video showing how well your shorts did and how many subscribers you gained from them. I see that you have gained a lot of views in your shorts since you posted this video.
i have come across many channels doing this posting long or short every single day for a month - and whilst the concept is interesting - so many creators say it lead them to being burnt out and exhausted. yeah its good to try experiment like this - but got to take care of that mental and physical health - being mindful of your limitations. this video serves as hope - whilst uploading anything daily might not be viable for many (real life must come first) - i acknowledge that upload frequency can be key to growth. as creators we must think about how we can create a schedule for ourselves, that can go with our daily lives outside of the internet and outside of YT!! cool video with some interesting stats here Daniel. 👍👍
Cheers Dan. This was very interesting. I'm not sure if I'll get into Shorts. I know I should, but it means sitting down and figuring out how to do it. I'd like to post the odd thing from my phone, but that connects to a different channel and doesn't identify clearly as me... Anyway, great vid and food for thought.
Great video brother, it has inspired me, I don;t know if I can do anything with the inspiration, but I am looking into it (The wheels in my head keep on turnin, I don't know what I'll be doing tomorrow). One thing I see you have done in this series, that you have told us not to do is have the number of the video, like #3 of the series or #5, etc. Even before I started working with you, I never liked doing it, but what are your thoughts on it now. Has Shorts changed your mind about that strategy?
It was strategic for this Shorts series because there are no custom thumbnails to help differentiate them and my strategy makes them all feel similar. So the title is the only place I can separate one from another
After watching your original video, I uploaded shorts for 20 days. I noticed an increase in all metrics, which was encouraging. I'm going to wait another 20 days and repeat the experiment. I've mixed thoughts on shorts as to their future.
"DR for Noobs" also worked because you are a cool best ager guy with a metal music haircut and a likeable even for non native speaker understandable voice. Honestly, when I saw your first YT-short, I expected tips for electric guitar riffs... :-D
I appreciate that you mentioned how tough it is to create shorts regularly as it's often assumed easy to the point that they are dismissed as valid content, creating shorts can be a quite a bit of work especially if one has multiple social media and or you're niche requires several minutes hours or even days of painting sketching or drawing and you happen to be a faceless channel which isn't doing commentary or driving interest via brand personality and providing value. I had considered shifting a bit more towards conversational art tips and topics along side my usual art videos but after the weird glitch that occurred a few weeks ago I'm nervous something else might "glitch" example intro hi today we are going to talk about these paints and how they work, suddenly the screen blinks out or something like that, lol I'm kidding but who knows, social makes me nervous haha even after years of business goal related use, but yeah creating both shorts while also trying to improve long form isn't easy regardless of niche but especially if you're doing a lot of physically and mentally creative work and your almost constantly trying to think of ideas which are helpful but won't take an eternity to create. that said, this is very insightful some of this I noticed as well though I don't upload every single day I've been uploading every other day to every two or three days as I need time to record the content. I appreciate shorts I don't have any particularly negative feelings regarding shorts but I have noticed a drop in views and even video stutter to the point in which video are not pushed out which felt discouraging but I'm still trying my best, thanks for the info ☮️❤
My personal experience has been that if you've done a good job helping RUclips understand who your content should be served to, everything works out well. The biggest problem I see is that creators tend to come up short in developing strong value propositions for their channels and executing on targeted content strategy. That's a general statement, not point that at you. I'm hoping the larger take-away from this video is that really thinking about how all of our content works together and understanding why a viewer would want to come back and watch tomorrow is the key to success, regardless of content type.
Interesting. My only hesitation with shorts is the amount of time I need to make them. I did a short once that took almost as much time to film as a normal video. Yes I kept flubbing etc but in the end i didn’t think the result was worth it. You have given me an idea though. May start implementing my own 30 days of shorts in a week and a half or so.
If your Shorts strategy is driving the awareness and conversion metrics you’re looking for pal, I see no reason not to lean on them more heavily. Exactly what I’ve done. The issue I have is when people make bold statements as if content is ever an “either/or” scenario. It isn’t.
@@Daniel_Batal there is more to that because obviously I don't know what my metrics are going to be. But bottom line is the shorts can go on all social media platforms where the long form content can only have a shot on RUclips
I think your shorts format works really well. Many times, when I watch a video--particularly a video that teaches me something about Davinci Resolve--I get annoyed with all the nonsense instead of getting right to it. Of course, your videos are limited to viewers that have interest in Davince Resolve. But I would have expected it would push your channel forward.
Thank you for sharing the results! I, as example, knew your channel because of this shorts. I fall in love with them 😍, they led me to immediate subscription, commenting and liking. I even got addicted to the sentence "Dav.Res. for NOOBs" 😄, so that I am planning to make it my standard phone-ring 😂. Thank you for all your hard work, I know exactly how hard and time consuming to make this tutorials that great, easy to follow, informative, and your voice is on high-quality level. You could work as a commentator or a reporter 👍,
Great video as usual 👍. Good point about the effort involved; if we want to bring in subscribers every Short has to give value. Blaise Pascal hit the nail on the head when he wrote "I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time." Edit: apparently it was Mark Twain. Pascal translated it into French and then others translated it back. As a user, Shorts is now a lot closer to the way I want it. I want to see a variety of music channels with a good number that I don't subscribe to. Shorts used to be untrainable with me continuously having to select "don't show me videos like this" but now it's just occasionally. The Home page has also improved in this regard for long-form videos.
The fact that a content creator with some videos that have over a Million views took the time to comment on my comment won me over as a new sub! Because it meant that if I have question in the future on material you’re covering, it’s likely I’ll get a response! As far as shorts vs. longer videos, the shorts I think are FANTASTIC for quick tips for noobs like me who get stuck on an editing issue and need a quick solution so that we can continue editing. Your shorts did that on a number of occasions. So I think….mission accomplished 👍🙏🏻 Thanks!
Just an anecdotal bit of information: I thought I was already subscribed to you and I hadn't seen one of your videos in a long time, but a day after I searched something about DaVinci and watched a different video, one of your "for noobs" shorts popped up. I realized I wasn't actually subscribed, corrected that, and here I am.
You are AWESOME, It is not easy to give such clear and quality information. Even though I'm not interested in Davinci, I watch every video of yours until the end. I just want you to get paid for your hard work. You are a super creator. I wish the continuation of your success. I also started to upload videos, I produce 3d scenes in blender program and I use adobe after effects. Your love of teaching us something energizes me every day. Even though we are thousands of kilometers away, my heart is always with you. Thank you. Kind regards🙏
Just to understand a bigger piece of the picture, I'd like to see on a channel your size the impact of VOD impressions in addition to the views. I've been posting shorts pretty consistently since just about the beginning, and a huge misconception is that (now) youtube will prioritize shorts over long form on youtube proper. While I believe the Best for Viewer endcard is currently broken because of this, I haven't noticed a negative impact to browse/suggested impressions for long form or live. Based on my observations with shorts, that audience has a different viewer behavior, which is why I think it's smart for youtube to keep those experiences distinct. One thing I will say about shorts though is that currently, the ability to reply to comments via shorts may be slightly overpowered as far as converting shorts viewers to long form.
Good analysis. The overall viewpoint of shorts will, I assume, change over time as it just becomes a normal part of RUclips. (If they aren't already) Your experiment was great. IMO there are a few reasons shorts have gotten a bad name for channels up to this point: 1. People would post unrelated shorts to their pillar content and therefor lose viewers or subscribers because that's "not where they're here for." 2. People are just reposting TikTok content that's, again, unrelated to their pillar content. 3. RUclips is experimenting still with the way shorts are recommended and pushed to viewers. 4. Shorts are just being used ONLY as a funnel to the main content. When I'm watching shorts, reels, or TikTok I'm normally in the "bite sized and rapid fire" mindset of content consumption. I'm not looking to "discover" a new channel and have to watch more... or worse... have to look for part 2, 3, etc of the short to get the rest. Thanks for another great video and doing the experiment!
The biggest question i would have regarding this test. Do Short Form Subscribers actually convert and move over to becoming Long Form Subscribers or not? Without that… it could be just a waste of time and Energy.
I could go on at length as to why that statement is extremely misguided. I’ll only give you a quick anecdote. I’m currently negotiating a 6 figure sponsorship deal with a company based solely on the connection I’ve built with my target audience through Shorts. Stop trying to move an audience where you think they should be and meet them where they are.
Now stitch the shorts together into a single long form video "30 Tips for Davinci Resolve" and maximize exposure across all your viewers. Can then compare them all.
Unfortunately, I think it would probably move too quickly for a good user (Noob) experience. That’s also available just by clicking the playlist I created.
I think enough time has passed that a lot of viewers have learned how to operate Resolve. Of course there will always be "noobs". For me, many were interesting but, I'm just a basic editor so, many were just that, interesting. Honestly some I just passed by because I didn't, immediately see how they were useful to my purposes. Others I keep going back to because they do fit my needs. If I were into more advanced editing, they all were great. But, I'm not so, some just weren't within my needs. I will say that overall, it did "hurt" the long form versions because I could get that "quick tip" I didn't know I needed or the tip I was looking for without going to the long form. So, it's kind of a trade off. "Should I make a short and a long form of the same content?" Knowing, from experience, that you usually go into more detail with your long form, I say yes YOU should. For a quick tip your shorts are great but, for those needing more detail your long form is great. So, you in particular, are reaching the "how do I do this" audience and the "I don't understand how to this" audience. For me to do shorts, it would be taking a clip of a certain element from a longer project in order to highlight that process. Such as, I'm and acrylic painter so, I might extract a tip on how to paint trees. That clip would then become a short. But, unless you're one of my following along viewers, there is not going to be much value in the long form videos for the tip seeker. This may be why shorts seem to add a "handicap" to my channel.
I think there are more beginner Resolve users than ever. I also tend to get just as many responses from longtime users saying, “Never knew that feature was there”
In shorts You provided a tip for using Super Scale and mentioned that it can be found in the Inspector tab. However, it is not located there; instead, it appears in the Clip Attributes form. I think it would be helpful if you explained how to access Super Scale in the Inspector tab as well. 😊😊
On my personal channel, I have done 4 shorts as well as my standard vlog videos. One just hit 10k views, the others are all under 1k. It makes no sense to me. But I'll steal some of your tips and try again.
I had 3 or 4 of my shorts go viral. They reached 10M, 6M, 4M and 2M. All of them brought a lot of traffic... from India. I have no idea why. All 4 are very similar. The long form content of these videos didn't really go up that much. My subscriptions jumped (the 10M one gained 16K subscribers) but the long form content stayed the same and the revenue was the same. Very strange.
India banned TikTok and was their largest user base so RUclips jumped into India first to fill that void. That’s most likely why you saw a lot of views from that region
It was very interesting to hear what you learned through the process. Did you film your footage 9:16 @ 1080 or did you reframe and rescale 16:9 footage? I have a 16:9 source for my shorts but the rescale I am using in Resolve left me with huge frame borders at the top and bottom of my 9:16 frame. Even smart rescale and reframe didn't help much - but I am pretty sure that that is user error.
Nice! Try to come up with a great strategy. That's what I really believe the key is. Just publishing every day won't move the needle, I proved that in the first half of this test.
@@Daniel_Batal any thoughts on clipping the best part of a long form video and using it as a short? For me I would use the conclusion of a video game review and reformat it for a short
I'm considering doing the same thing with a series of shorts that relate to a single long form video. I'd be curious about where the audience is more likely to watch videos like these. I posit that desktop software tutorials may get above average views from desktop due to when people may look for them.
@@Daniel_Batal Interesting. I'd be curious where people are primarily watching these types of tutorials, i.e. around the software that's being featured, or away from the computer and more on the go or with their normal viewing session.
Very interesting, I'm doing something similar but I'm remixing long form videos into shorts once per day, I'm only on day 5 but the last 3 shorts have spiked then dropped why the first two have done nothing, it also hasn't pushed traffic onto the long video that I remixed into a short. Really enjoyed the content Daniel great work 💪
I did some earlier tests with remixing and although I can't say conclusively, here's my take: Most repurposed content feels repurposed. Audiences are sooooo savvy and they can tell when something wasn't specifically built for that viewing experience. My gut says that if you really want to give Shorts a chance at working, you have to develop a strategy and put in a lot more effort than just cutting up a bunch of longer form videos and treating Shorts content itself like an afterthough. (Not directing any judgement at you, that was literally the conversation I had with myself)
@@Daniel_Batal that is a great way to look at it, i may have to rethink my approach to what I'm doing with shorts, I definitely don't take judgement and that's what I think is great about your channel is that you actually reply to comments and you have "constructive criticism" and it's a breath of fresh air if that makes sense 😃 thanks mate 👍 always learning 💪
🔴 Here are the 30 Shorts I published ▶ ruclips.net/p/PLsVDy3wGxbDA-pvAT1eH2_khEe0lDe90e
A sentence can be more powerful than a paragraph if it's well constructed.
Hence, Shorts.
I love that you now have a playlist for these tips. Now I can add that playlist to my production playlist that I often refer to.
How effective has this been pinning the playlist to your over all shorts metrics?
@@Daniel_Batal I'll defo watch the update video on this once it comes out. Really interested in how youtube shorts are working in 2023.
I love how you approached explaining all of this. Very well broken down
Thanks, Greg
PLEASE make a video on how you recorded and edited your shorts! That would be really helpful. 😊
Thanks for sharing your data with us Daniel. PS you are looking a little grey. I would recommend getting some sun now that we have good weather. 😂
😅
Your shorts.. HELPED me especially with the resolve program. LOVED it!
Awesome! So thankful you enjoyed them ☮️
Your method of learning one thing a day is hugely inspirational. I am going to start doing that myself. Great work as always, Daniel! Keep it up!
Thanks!
Very curious about that piano statement. More information, please! ☘💪🏽👀👍🏽☘
I'll start tomorrow with your idea, THANKS!!🔥🧨💪🏽🤠👍🏽🧨🔥
(P.S. We did in fact briefly meet at VidSummit 2019)
When you changed your titles it helped FOR SURE. With the same title beginning and the same talking head/background it looked like i was getting the same video. And then when multiple showed up in one session, i thought RUclips was broken. 😂
I'm very curious about how they work over time. That's one of the HUGE benefits of longform video, they can live forever.
If shorts don't, which i have feared all along, then they are not as valuable... But still worth trying.
I’m still learning just like everyone else 😁
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing this test!!
Awesome. Welcome aboard!
Thank you.
Right on. I appreciate the kind words. More to come!
I've been trying to wrap my head around my Shorts analytics a lot recently. I really appreciate all of the info here!
Hope this was helpful!
That’s excellent information! Thank you.
I’ve been reluctant to even bother with shorts at all.
This and the Film Booth Channel are the best I’ve found for breakdowns on making good videos and editing for success. And by “good” I mean people watching for retention.
Much appreciated, Hastur.
Ed is pretty awesome.
I'd love to see you do a shorts series on understanding analytics, sort of an expansion of this video, but in series form. I enjoy shorts, especially when I'm learning something new. I enjoy a long form video to get me started, and then shorts to keep me interested, engaged, and informed.
That’s an interesting suggestion 👊😎☮️
good for you..... I had to stop this experiment right away... as you said, big load over the regular work.. very interesting to see your results.
That's so great to see. I did this for my channel in March and got burnt. I definitely plan to conduct more, I just have to spend time crafting a strategy for my niche/genre. Thank you for doing this. Hoping for continued success for your channel!
Thanks 🙏
Hello great video information Daniel
Thanks 😁
Hopefully those will return one day
Shorts made me subscribe to your channel and it helped me a lot . Thanks for the good helpful content
Much appreciated!
The most important thing in shorts to go well is the average percent views, if the average percent views are 80% + it will go well for shorts (40 sec +) for 15 sec below shorts it should be 100%+
Just check the top-performing shorts in this series and compare the average percent views matrix from other shorts.
It depends.
It’s more about how it performs at scale. Also, not all shorts have the same depth of audience.
@@Daniel_Batal Can relate, some topics just have far less reach and shorts will stop pushing them out at a certain point.
Brilliant.
I have two cats and many chairs.
Let’s test this thing out 😅
The best thing about this views seeing how many subscribers you lose on average. It made me feel a lot better about my own loss of subscribers. It's only about 3 per month and, as much as I try to fight it, it gets to me sometimes. Thank you so much! ❤✌️
We refer to that as ‘Churn’.
It comes with the territory. The more you gain, the more you’ll lose along the way.
It’s just part of it ☮️
@@Daniel_Batal Thanks!
You are brilliant Daniel!!! love your analytical view of this video, very helpful!
Good stuff Mr. Batal!🔥🤘🏻😎
Thanks, Mr Paul Peck!
Through the shorts i discovered your channel and you my friend are an influence! Thank you for taking the time to make these informative videos!
👊😎☮️
Loving your insights and I love you long form stuff as well
Great to hear!
Impressive! My best do 1200 😂
@@IcelandAdventures It's a good start. I have a couple doing badly.
You also have a second channel you’ve been posting only shorts to, if I remember correctly Jeven?
I’d love to see your data sometime 😁
@@Daniel_Batal Yeah thats where my shorts focus is right now. The data is wild on that channel. 125 million views since feb 1st.
I have found your DaVinci shorts helpful and was wondering if you have considered putting all of them together in a long form video that was broken into chapters? It would be a really handy reference guide for us noobs.
There actually all numbered and in a playlist on my channel homepage.
I did find those, but my thinking was that I have a watch file for long-form videos and it occurred to me that if you lumped these all into a long-form then you would also get lots of repeated views as folks like me went back time after time to look for answers to specific problems.
I found you through shorts today, more than a year later, so your short content worked. I'm now a subscriber.
Awesome, thank you!
I'm one of the 1,300 subscribers who came here because I found you in my Shorts feed. This is your first long-form video I've watched. There are other creators in my Shorts feed who are trying to pull me over to their long-form videos and I've got to say: I like you how I know you (in my shorts feed!).
Glad to have you here! ☮️
Thanks, Mark! I think the lesson here is that I should continue with DR Shorts.
Great job Daniel. This is a lot of information. Thanks 👍
You’re hair looks stellar, as always. I’m at 4:40 and the vid is fantastic!

This is outstanding, Daniel 🤩Thanks so much for sharing your learnings ✨
I loved the Shorts 30 Day run as I've used Davinci Resolve for 2 years and forgot some things. They get right to the point without fluff
Thanks. That really was my goal and although I certainly didn't do it perfectly (adjustments were made), they definitely seemed to connect on that level.
No big time commitments, just a quick tip for editing.
I think I might continue with that series.
very nice data analysis. Thank you! excited on the next phase.
Me too.
I'm really enjoying your shorts. I hope you can keep them going. The format is great!
Awesome! Definitely more to come 👊😎☮️
Great info Daniel, Thank you so much
Check this out.
I am commenting from my wife's account, but you are 11/10 extremely helpful and I greatly appreciate your content.
Thank you very much!
Got encouraged from the video. Will try to implement.
Thanks, Ziggy!
(Not specifically from the Shorts)
Some of that is from topic alignment but mostly because that content just did what it was supposed to do and connected with the target audience
You should do an updated video showing how well your shorts did and how many subscribers you gained from them. I see that you have gained a lot of views in your shorts since you posted this video.
I post a lot of updated data on Twitter.
Your short brings me here... so success!
Perfect!
i have come across many channels doing this posting long or short every single day for a month - and whilst the concept is interesting - so many creators say it lead them to being burnt out and exhausted. yeah its good to try experiment like this - but got to take care of that mental and physical health - being mindful of your limitations.
this video serves as hope - whilst uploading anything daily might not be viable for many (real life must come first) - i acknowledge that upload frequency can be key to growth. as creators we must think about how we can create a schedule for ourselves, that can go with our daily lives outside of the internet and outside of YT!!
cool video with some interesting stats here Daniel. 👍👍
You’re not wrong.
I was surprised how much extra effort it actually took to make an original Short every day
I have been doing the same for my real estate channel just started a few days ago and now know what to look for ! Thanks 👍
So the title is the only place I can separate one from another
I had 3 shorts go viral for me in March-April and I picked up 1600 new subscribers and a million views on my channel as a whole.
They certainly can reach a segment of viewers that sometimes our longer form content hasn't
Thank you for the insights! This is pretty great, as always.
Kind of interesting, huh?
I'm always learning 🙂
@@Daniel_Batal we all do. Life is constantly changing and a constant process of learning, especially in our segment. And I love it.
Thanks Daniel! Good information.
I just migrate to Davinci, your shorts really helped me...Davinci Resolve for noobs always in my brain when I stuck 😅
After watching your original video, I uploaded shorts for 20 days. I noticed an increase in all metrics, which was encouraging. I'm going to wait another 20 days and repeat the experiment. I've mixed thoughts on shorts as to their future.
I think the features keep improving and creators are learning to make better content.
My guess is they’ll be around for a while
Great info. Is there a platform that you recommend which pushes your shorts everywhere?
Yes. RUclips.
Shorts are definitely a different animal. Cheers Daniel!
They sure do have a learning curve
@@Daniel_Batal The roller coaster is still in motion so it's the perfect time to throw your hands up and enjoy the ride!
"DR for Noobs" also worked because you are a cool best ager guy with a metal music haircut and a likeable even for non native speaker understandable voice. Honestly, when I saw your first YT-short, I expected tips for electric guitar riffs... :-D
“Ager guy” 😅
Hey man! How are you? I had last watched your videos quite a long time ago... You were then having 70k subs... Now it's in Lakh. Good to see that!
Welcome back!
Great video, and I do agree, titles matter alot for shorts.
They definitely aren’t as easy as some people think. Especially if you’re creating original (not repurposed) content
I look forward to hearing how it goes for you!
Excellent instructions! New sub. I haven't posted yet, but I am studying and planning.
I'm going to switch my channel completely to shorts only. What are your thoughts on that?
If your Shorts strategy is driving the awareness and conversion metrics you’re looking for pal, I see no reason not to lean on them more heavily.
Exactly what I’ve done.
The issue I have is when people make bold statements as if content is ever an “either/or” scenario.
It isn’t.
@@Daniel_Batal there is more to that because obviously I don't know what my metrics are going to be. But bottom line is the shorts can go on all social media platforms where the long form content can only have a shot on RUclips
At some point can you please consider doing a video on how to best use RUclips analytics? Like how you used metrics in this video.
I wish there was one good answer for that! But it’s a great suggestion
It’s very niche but that’s why I focused on Shorts as the method of connection
Thank you for sharing the results!
I, as example, knew your channel because of this shorts. I fall in love with them 😍, they led me to immediate subscription, commenting and liking. I even got addicted to the sentence "Dav.Res. for NOOBs" 😄, so that I am planning to make it my standard phone-ring 😂.
Thank you for all your hard work, I know exactly how hard and time consuming to make this tutorials that great, easy to follow, informative, and your voice is on high-quality level. You could work as a commentator or a reporter 👍,
Wow thanks! Much appreciated ❤️☮️
Watching your shorts is how I discovered you. Thanks for your Davinci resolve for noobs.
Glad you like them!
I am enjoying your RUclips shorts, quick and easy to fllow.
Awesome! I appreciate that
I learned some good facts from your video I love learning about how you made 30 video shorts and I think you have great facts about it 👏👏👏💯💯💯
Great video as usual 👍.
Shorts are definitely improving as a feature overall
I loved your Davinci shorts. It's the reason I'm going to try it out.
Love hearing that!
Awesome! I appreciate that ☮️
Just an anecdotal bit of information: I thought I was already subscribed to you and I hadn't seen one of your videos in a long time, but a day after I searched something about DaVinci and watched a different video, one of your "for noobs" shorts popped up. I realized I wasn't actually subscribed, corrected that, and here I am.
Welcome back!
Blender is a beast! I used it for a while and barely scratched the surface of what it could do.
@@Daniel_Batal 😁
I feel like we’re seeing better compartmentalization of the content type but better integration overall
Good analysis. The overall viewpoint of shorts will, I assume, change over time as it just becomes a normal part of RUclips. (If they aren't already)
Your experiment was great. IMO there are a few reasons shorts have gotten a bad name for channels up to this point:
1. People would post unrelated shorts to their pillar content and therefor lose viewers or subscribers because that's "not where they're here for."
Man, you nailed it Chris. I agree with everything you said!
great video and super informative!
"Should I make a short and a long form of the same content?"
Knowing, from experience, that you usually go into more detail with your long form, I say yes YOU should.
I also tend to get just as many responses from longtime users saying, “Never knew that feature was there”
Very Informative. Thanks!
You're welcome!
In shorts You provided a tip for using Super Scale and mentioned that it can be found in the Inspector tab. However, it is not located there; instead, it appears in the Clip Attributes form. I think it would be helpful if you explained how to access Super Scale in the Inspector tab as well. 😊😊
I’m using 18.5 BETA Studio. Versions may vary
@@Daniel_Batal Oh, that explains a lot. I will try it. 😊 Thank you! 🙏💐
@@Daniel_Batal thank you so much!! This makes so much sense!!!
I have to screen capture at 16:9 because the software UI defaults to that display aspect ratio
Great question!
Great video Daniel, I'm going to do the same soon and see how it goes 👍
Surprisingly most of mine come from mobile even though I’m referencing desktop software
