How can different medicines with similar names and similar looks can cost your life

What would one do if two drugs, meant for two completely different diseases, have the same appearance. The patients, especially those who can't read, would suffer by having a drug which was never meant to be taken; and not take the drug which was meant to be taken. The problem increases manifold if two different sets of drugs have almost identical appearance and identical names as well. In such cases not only the doctors can get confused, even the pharmacist who is dispensing the drug. The problem exists at a large scale in India and is not much talked about.
Murali Neelkanthan (an advocate), Dr Path Sharma (a community physician) and Ashish Kulkarni (Independent economist) came out with a 'viewpoint' in The Lancet Regional Health. It was published on May 16, 2024.
