I think Steve Smith's playing on Burning for Buddy on this song sounds even better than the original and I am a true believer that Buddy was the best ever....I just like the way he accents certain parts. ....great drummer
Dear God what a source of frustration. Amazing playing - agreed. At the same time, it sure would have sounded better and more enjoyable to listen to if the damned snare was louder in the mix. Or, it has a gate on it that is too "gated" - as it sure would have been better if we could hear the ghost / grace notes. It is such a huge part of the effectiveness of the Groove.
+drhappyyy Much agreement. THe whole recording felt too dry and too "empty" compared to what I'm used to hearing from BR (granted, BR has more texture than most people can even begin to comprehend, much less replicate, so that's part of it).
Also good to hear the band in the capable hands of Steve Marcus (Buddy's Music Director, tenor sax solo), who knew how Buddy wanted stuff played and phrased and made sure the band were on it. This was not just some random assemblage of musicians good enough to read and play the charts. This was BUDDY'S BAND, and they sound like it.
Ever since I saw this performance when it came out, have always said that Steve deserved special recognition for playing this great on such a woobly drum riser! Almost 20 years later, he's even playing 20 times better! What a wonderful role model he is.
+Steeltowner As much as I am a Neil's fan, it seems that you have never heard Mr. Smith with Tony Mc. Alpine, or Dweezel Zappa, or Ritchie Kotzen...check him out.
+49russman I respectfully disagree. Steve is an overall better drummer, miles ahead of Neil but Neil's work with Rush destroys Steve's work with Journey in every way shape and form. I'm talking about it from the rock perspective.
If you can't see and hear the amazing groove, technique and musicality because of this (non existent by the way) "stiffness", then you are missing the point mate
He and Ross Valary were fired when the Raised on Radio album was released...Steve Perry felt he wanted a new direction and change which he later admitted was the wrong idea and if he ever had the chance, he would not have done it. He eventually came back to Trial by Fire album, but Perry could not tour due to hip issues. Steve did not want to come back after that and enter Deen Castranovo. Steve Smith NEVER had any issues with the band. In fact, he was Journey's best drummer EVER!
I challenge that with Jojo Mayer.. However smith and Mayer both I think are equally diverse, smith with his Indian polyrhythms and Mayer with his signature divides
What helps both of them with this mastery is that they both understand and have heavily delved into jazz. Anyone with a grand appreciation of jazz is a good musician
Agree 100%. I was a straight up rock drummer back in my teen yrs. Then I took lessons w/ a Berklee grad. I learned jazz, latin, shuffles, sambas, etc. and my drumming became leaps and bounds better.
His performance of this on the 'Burning for Buddy' tribute is still the best version I have ever heard of it. It's amazing to see/hear the growth from this performance to that one
@@teddys3558 I agree but I think he's going for mileage and longevity now. He's getting older and his style now is the Smart Move, but yeah give me Steve choked back on some 2B's all day long. He Fucking Took No Prisoners on this performance
Was at this show Steve did a clinic as well at Sam Ash in Carle Place LI NY two days earlier on a Saturday his solo covered all feels in a drumming specrum for 25 plus minutes non stop very impressive especially with his stamina. Back then he was using a sonor signature bronze pic snare. 3 / 1/2 snares were in the early nintees and Yamaha was the biggest endorser . Weckl was hot in the studio scene and everyone wanted that sound Great finger control Steve has Jojo is another with that touch.
@ravcampbell 1988 i think. it was the first memorial concert held after Buddy passed away. if it is from that performance, steve gadd and dave weckl were also there with Vinnie Colaiuta and a few others.
A lot of people can play drums but the spirit pushing the beat etc. is what you feel and that is a good vid but nothing compared to the Energy that Buddy flew at on that song. Buddy was flying and laying down the drive of the entire song with his fire.
i didn't know he was fired from Journey. wow. i think i remember him having a problem with them, but i had no idea he was fired. wow where have i been lol
@erkoape Not when it comes to jazz. I love Peart. I saw Rush in concert 04/03/2011. They're my favorite, but I think Neil is just a little square when it comes to jazz. He already knows what he's going to play when he sits down. In other words, there's no improvising when he plays jazz. That's just my opinion.
@cadillacdude1975 correction, Steve Smiths performance was from the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert held at The Ritz Theater in New York City on April 8, 1991
@MrPelicanPants You should hear him with his new Raga Bop Trio Live. It's a mind-blowing experience. It's one of those rare bands that really synergizes live.
Wow! I like the positioning of his ride cymbal. I've always liked mine in the same place, just a few inches over the far right rack tom, which in my case is a 13". I bring it in as far as I can without it being in the way.
drewper73 i like that positioning a lot also, but mounting it to the bass drum seems a little risky, i'm surprised that mount didn't snap, hitting the bass drum causes a lot of pressure, awesome performance nonetheless
SXI96 I bet he had mounted it that way several times before that night's performance. Then again, maybe he hadn't. The first few years that I had a drum set however, I liked my ride cymbal next to my floor tom, a la Neil Peart. I don't remember changing it or why I changed positions but I did and it's been there ever since.
@drewper73 I couldn't agree more... I LOVE Peart, but the guy just cannot play jazz in my opinion; he doesn't swing. It was almost painful to watch him take a "jazz" solo during this concert only to turn it into a rock solo about 1 minute in; watch the footage and see for yourself! Peart was quite literally incapable of performing a jazz solo. Still, I've always loved Peart and at the end of the day he's a rock drummer anyway.
Great stuff! Although I can't get over Steves' white sneakers with his tux! lol.. Hasn't hipped to a slick pair of Capezio dress styles shoes. According to Steve Jordan that's the secret. Dance shoes with flex that still look like dress shoes.
I know everyone loves Steve Perry..but he fired this Guy from Journey because he couldn't cut it Musicly or something about not playing well with a click .... I mean you have one of the best drummers in the world and one of the most melodic bass players in the world with Great Chops of his own (Ross Valory), and you fire them both? That is what Steve Perry Did, and we should forget that.... Nobody is Singing "Suzanne" from Raise On Radio...People still Sing "Any Way You Want It"
funkster007 Nope it was Steve ..Niel and Jon reluctantly ket him do it. See the Journey VH1 "Behind The Music".. Steve regretted it and said it was one of thr biggest mistakes he made and if could take it ack he would...
+Johnny Caprise is that right? I thought Perry left before Smith after Trial by Fire. I recall that Smith said Journey without Perry didn't interest him and then himself left.
You might want to corroborate all the info on "Behind the Music" with original manager Herbie Herbert in one of his recorded-under-the-table interviews on the web. That entire show was put together by Perry's people with a lot of cleaning in favor of their client. Try this: www.melodicrock.com/interviews/herbieherbert.html There's an even better one but can't find it right away. Will post later, but explains how Perry drowned his career after being an ass during his Oh, Sherry period to promoters and key music business people.
I think now is a better drummer. The playing here is technically excellent, but it seems to much cold in sound and fills for play a latin jazz tunes. When I saw somes recently Smith videos, I felt a great sense and feel of swing, same feel suffers his lacks here. Maybe too much influence from that era
Trombone having been, somewhat of, an instrument of proficiency of mine for 40+ years, now, I feel qualified in saying that there is NO reason that a trombone player should ever be as out of freakin' tune as the first trombone was at the beginning while performing the soli section with the first trumpet. The instrument is one big tuning slide, for Pete's sake!!
God, I've been scrolling for a bit and the only three comments I've seen bitching at this have been yours. Buddy Rich was an overrated drummer jerking off on his solos and there are plenty of drummers who play with way more finesse and groove than him. Get over it.
Steve gets better with age. I think is playing today is much better than what we see here. Or maybe it's those drums and cymbals that look and sound dated? Those huge toms were lame on so many levels...just a way to sell more drums.
At these "BR Memorial Concerts" - - - a joke in itself, they should have had ONE drum set set up for ALL the guys to play. A copy of B's set up. Not 5 different drum sets on the stage at once. See how well these guys would fair with B's basic drum set and a few cymbals. Not very well. Don't bother with the hate filled comments, they will be ignored.
every drummer should watch this video every day Steve Smith is a beast! blow me away!
This is his finest moment IMO. Flawless delivery, silky smooth feel, laborless control, unforgiving speed. It does not get better than right here!
Steve smith one of the greatest. no words to describe his love for playing, listening to his playing is enough
Steve has just spent the past 20 years getting better. His work with Hiromi Trio is stellar as well as VI
I think Steve Smith's playing on Burning for Buddy on this song sounds even better than the original and I am a true believer that Buddy was the best ever....I just like the way he accents certain parts. ....great drummer

Steve is such a great player he gives it a Latin feel as well -
Steve is one of the best of all time
Also good to hear the band in the capable hands of Steve Marcus (Buddy's Music Director, tenor sax solo), who knew how Buddy wanted stuff played and phrased and made sure the band were on it. wow.. HIS drumset sounds amazing... and he IS quite amazing... really high quality posting...some great horn section.... i am enjoying the view.
Ive Met Steve (twice)in Manhattan with Vital Information(Iridium Jazz Clubs both times)................Great Drummer and a Nice Guy..
What a wonderful drummer!!!
This tune is dedicated to my ex-wife
that is hetero sexual reality my friend
🤣
that was GOLD
😂 This tune's dedicated to EVERYONE's wife!! 😂
Thanks for the chuckle
kin hell - how silky smooth is that, and solo blast at the end is sensational
all hail the double bass metal beat on a big band tune, ss rocks!

Almost 20 years later, he's even playing 20 times better! What a wonderful role model he is.
steve´s the man for sure! amazing that they failed to give him a solid podium for the drums! Look at that shit swaying, dahm!
Один из великих.Есть может техничные барабанщики,но мало кто обладает таким музыкальным вкусом и экспрессией,драйвом!
Steve Smith. Kicking Neil Peart's ass for 30+ years.
Neil would be the first to agree with you.
Maybe in the jazz dept. Neil destroys Steve in the rock game.
+Steeltowner As much as I am a Neil's fan, it seems that you have never heard Mr. Smith with Tony Mc. Alpine, or Dweezel Zappa, or Ritchie Kotzen...check him out.
+PabloJ1968 Steve eats Neil's lunch in every way on the drum kit. Neil will tell you as much. And I love Rush, BTW- my favorite band.
+49russman I respectfully disagree. Steve is an overall better drummer, miles ahead of Neil but Neil's work with Rush destroys Steve's work with Journey in every way shape and form. I'm talking about it from the rock perspective.
That high tom really adds a nice timbre in the mix.
Steve Smith keeps evolving!
+drazvutya medina Hes like a million times better now. Hes extremely fluid now a days. A little stiff on this.
+daron nelson wtf? are we watching the same video???
yeah compared to how he plays now. This is very stiff.
If you can't see and hear the amazing groove, technique and musicality because of this (non existent by the way) "stiffness", then you are missing the point mate
well i dont really dig it. I love the way he plays now. This to me was ok. what i am trying to say is by comparison his chops now are extremely fluid.
He and Ross Valary were fired when the Raised on Radio album was released...Steve Perry felt he wanted a new direction and change which he later admitted was the wrong idea and if he ever had the chance, he would not have done it. Facts!
Simply the best all around drummer in the biz.
I challenge that with Jojo Mayer.. However smith and Mayer both I think are equally diverse, smith with his Indian polyrhythms and Mayer with his signature divides

He's an excellent drummer! Enjoyed this very much. Love the tune too!
Love how those toms are tuned up
yes the shoes are for comfort and he pulled it off very well !
Yes Them Reebok Shoes.
His performance of this on the 'Burning for Buddy' tribute is still the best version I have ever heard of it. It's amazing to see/hear
the growth from this performance to that one
nowadays steve would really cook on this song, he's so much more fluid now
I actually liked him better back in this time. Seemed more solid. He sounds too light and fluttery now in my humble opinion.
@@teddys3558 I agree but I think he's going for mileage and longevity now. He's getting older and his style now is the Smart Move, but yeah give me Steve choked back on some 2B's all day long. He Fucking Took No Prisoners on this performance
Only Steve Smith can pull off matching classic Reeboks with a tux.
Steve Marcus rip
Best!!!
Holy s**t!
Steve Smith with hair! thought i will never see that!
aaagggghhh! to die for! and this guy is almost a shadow of the drummer he has become....
4:16 , one of the most musical fills ever played. Gets me every time.

even the kit is swinging amazing :)
i didn't know he was fired from Journey. wow. i think i remember him having a problem with them, but i had no idea he was fired. wow where have i been lol
Incredible!
Today’s drummers who aren’t jazz drummers, are very game playing in Buddy’s footsteps.
Still it’s the thought and respect that counts.
@erkoape Not when it comes to jazz. I love Peart. I saw Rush in concert 04/03/2011. They're my favorite, but I think Neil is just a little square when it comes to jazz. Great job steve. A side of you other than rock which few know that you can do.
The end part with the double bass 👌
Jazz for Teacher lmao

I wish I could play as half as well as Steve Smith. Or Gadd. Or Jordan.

THE SMITHMACHINE Tore That Shit UP !
Watching him play here feels visually different than his 80's Journey concerts, I was like "WTF happened? He's way more loose now"

OMG was that drum riser made out of cardboard?!?!?!? I've never seen so much wobble and shake.
really enjoyed the video just a point Steve your kit is moving around which can be a bit of a put off any thoughts?
Es un festival de la Zildjian?
Billy Cobham's performance of this song with Horace silver was far superior to this, and Billy did this something like 60 years ago.
Smoooooooooooooooth. I don't know who can say this is stiff.
I love this guy for both his playing and him as a drummer. But FYI Steve, White trainners don't go with a tux. Good prefromance though.

Where’s Carl Palmer when you need him.
Oh please.
what size snare is he using...it seems huge...
Is there an earthquake or are the drums about to fall on the floor... and roll out the door?
Damn, why'd he have to catch the cymbals at the end...
could this be a 15 inch snare??
Why is his kit moving so much?
Right??
it happens a lot when you play on a riser
Unstable, flimsy drum riser, that's why.

Steve Smith and Steve Perry were the only talented musicians in the band Journey! In my opinion.....
Neil Schon can't play guitar right?
@@HadEnough745 He wouldn't make my top 20 all time greatest guitar players.
He reminds me of a balding Dave Gahan.
it doesnt flow very well.
Buddy Rich he ain't!
That's for sure. Not even close.
Weak sauce. What is he afraid of? Does he think he is a ro-bot?
I don't believe a drummer should be doing any improvising during another band members solo. Bad form. Sorry about that.
Seems the band can't join the drummer ....and can't swing . Weak tone .
Rock solo ......jazz song hmmmmm out of touch?
Sorry, but Neil Peart much more creative drummer imop.
