Direct 4 x 4 Canopy/Awning Installation on a Mazda Bongo Campervan

- In this video I install a Direct 4 x 4 canopy/awning on a Mazda Bongo Campervan. This came with complications as I have an aftermarket pop top roof so my gutters are easy to use with the brackets on the market as they are designed for the original AFT roofs.

Great job with the brackets. I had an ARB awning for my t25 which looked very similar. My advice would be to use guy ropes even on the calmest of days. When it does get picked up by a breeze the supports can become lethal. I really liked mine. It helped bring the outside inside and doubled the living area. Looks good on a bongo. I just tried to remember to peg it down when in use
Thanks! These awnings are basically ARB copies aren't they. I've heard others say exactly the same thing about pegging it down. I can imagine it turning into a huge 'sail of death' in a breeze!
Oh I love this idea! It does look cool, well done. You’re brave drilling bigger holes! Great that you’re recycling the brackets too 👍. I think your channel will really help me. Subscribed 👍
Hi Diane! thank you for subscribing :) and yes it was very scary drilling holes in the van 😂 it took me a while to build up to it. I've actually got another video about the brackets coming up soon as I've created new ones!
Oh and merry Christmas to you and your family
Merry Christmas to you 👍
Looks great bet you can’t wait to use it
Thanks, yes looking forward to getting out and using it!
like it. i may nab one for myself. have a good Christmas fella. all the best.
Thanks, Merry Christmas to you 👍
Buenas, muy buen trabajo como siempre. Soy Andrés desde España. Yo en mi Ford Freda tengo puesto un Rhino Rack y lo he anclado directamente al chasis que tiene unos puntos de anclaje al levantar el techo. He colocado tres escuadras y queda bastante bien. Tuve que recortar los tornillos para que al bajar y subir el techo no rozará. Un saludo y felices fiestas. Siento no escribirte directamente en inglés, pero mi vocabulario no es muy bueno.
¡Gracias! 👍
Hi great video. I've just got a Bongo. Can you recommend or suggest a rear bike rack. Mine does have a towbar. Ps I am just installing a diesel heater. George
I hope you're enjoying the Bongo journey so far?
I've only had experience with the Fiamma rack (also fits mercedes vito vans) that I have. It's very solid and I often carry extra camping equipment on it, but you do need to cut the spoiler to fit it.
I've heard the Thule 973 rack is also a good solid rack and doesn't require any modification to the van. I don't have any suggestions for towbar mounted racks I'm afraid.
Good luck with the heater installation, I'm desperate to get one, I just need to find a space for it! Cheers 👍
Hello fella well how are you getting on with the new awning.
Looking forward to seeing your updates and very intetrsted in seeing about brackets.
I have an afternarket poptop and would like one
Brendan
Hi Brendan, sorry for the delayed reply! I've not had much chance to use the awning as yet, but it's been very stable and you don't really notice it's on the van (which is good). So it looks like the brackets I made are holding up fine.
I'm afraid I've not had chance to make a second set of brackets yet. I'll order some metal today and get that delivered next week. Can you drop me an email (use the ABOUT tab on my channel), I don't always get notified about new comments. Cheers!
@Vantastic Ideas morning fella thankyou, loving that setup looks like a lovely awning. Can't find email address on your about page.
Very impressed with your bracket skills there, my roof opens up opposite to yours.
Which part of the country are you based in ?
Brendan
@@brendanmcfall739 That's odd, the email should show to anyone logged in to youtube I think? email me on info@vantasticideas.co.uk
Just emailed you there
Brendan
Hi! The awning looks great, which one exactly did you buy? I might have to buy one in the new year. Merry Christmas and a happy new year 🥳
Thanks! I got the 2.5 x 2.5m granite grey - direct4x4.co.uk/collections/overland-expedition-camping-awnings/products/expedition-pull-out-side-awning-with-sides
Happy New Year to you 🥳
Hiya I have a bongo with a pop top factory one, is there a bracket for them that you know of?
Ooh just got same setup with after market pop top
Been hunting for a while for solution.
Thankyou although I will need too find someone to help with brackets welding
I couldn't find anything for aftermarket roofs out there. I might make a V2 of these brackets (I was just using the brackets that came with the canopy to save money) starting from fresh metal as I have an idea to add another level of stability that I couldn't do with these ones. If I do make some new ones I might try and make more to sell, so people like us have options! Cheers 👍
Thanks for reply, just a newbie on the bongo, picked mine up last month, couple things I'd like before we set off too far, love your YT videos really appreciated and helpful for us amateurs.
That would be cool about brackets there are some jobs I'm not capable of .
@@brendanmcfall739 Thanks! they are such a fun van to play around with and so many options it's mind boggling :) I'll put out another video when I make those other brackets. Happy Bongoing 👍
