I had a strat with a fairly thicc neck and i wondered why I couldn't get to shredding so good, later I bought a jackson warrior with a super thin neck and a low action which i set to be as low as possible and it helped me a ton, I changed my pick to jazz 3 and it really stood out, the difference is s huge.

I prefer my Suhr 80s shred variants. The necks are not wizard thin, but still very fast. As long as the radius is pretty flat, I’m good. I have gone from low action to medium. It helps clean up my playing and makes it easier to grab the strings.

I never paid much attention to neck thickness myself. I generally play Jacksons so whatever thickness their necks are is what I'm used to. I do like a slightly wider neck though. My formal guitar training was in the form of classical guitar so I got really used to the wider fingerboard and the slightly wider string spacing.

My best advice on neck size is don't think about it, just feel it out. Try many guitars. When the right guitar and neck hit your hands you will know it instantly. There will be no hesitation, you will know immediately. The physical connection of hand and neck is the most intimate a musician may have with a guitar. It should feel so good it makes you need to hold the instrument.

I ended up selling my Ibanez prestige RG with the wizard ii and super super low action and i bought a Strandberg Boden with Fishman Fluence Modern pickups...for me, this guitar just unlocks my fingers and allows me to play stuff i couldn't imagine even trying on my strat or LP...
I really love the Strandberg after at first being really kind of skeptical of the whole thing. I'm super happy with my decision now and the Fluence Moderns are amazing sounding.

I have the fluence pickups in my Ibanez prestige frozen ocean. They sound absolutely amazing; especially since I've used emg's for years. The Fishman fluence gives you the best of both worlds. I was thinking about getting a Boden, probably the Plini, because I really love the unusual Australian blackwood finish. But I had yet to play a guitar with the Enduro neck, so got the prestige you can see in my profile picture. I'm still wanting one, especially when I keep seeing comments like yours over and over again in regards to the neck playability.

Merry Christmas. I have an Ibanez RG but have found the same as you. Playing Thicker necks actually removes a lot of the tension. At the end of the day there are guys out there shredding on pretty much anything. There is no one size fits all - whatever feels most comfortable will be what is best for you. It's a also a tiny difference but I think I also prefer a narrower nut. Again, there is no right or wrong just whatever suits you.

I went from an ibanez M80M, an ibanez premium of some sort and a schecter demon 7 that I had hot rodded to a Standberg Boden Metal seven and an E-II horizon NT-7 B Hipshot in purple sparkle.
The Standberg was absolutely fundamental to unlearning some bad habits and the E-II was super beneficial in learning how to be more open minded not to just individual specs but more on how they feel combined with one another. It’s been my go to recently. It’s been a great year for practicing!

I’ve never really thought about neck thickness removing tension, but it makes sense. I’ve always tended to prefer thin necks, but am always up for retooling!
I think you’ve written many books! I have all the guitar grimoire series for reference, and I have created a printed version of every Bernth 2020 lesson for practice variants and reference as well. I guess I’m very old school, but it works for me and helps put a tangible view on where I’ve been and where I want to go!

Loved the q n a. On neck size, when I strted playing it was on big fat fender necks, and than I strted trying and liked a slimmer more med. sized tighter string spacing of lp's as I progressed a little, though it did take some getting used to, keeping everything as clean with my fretting hand I got used to it and really like those for playing now also. Now I'm on to taking my playing up another level or 2 if I can with some work, I'm strting to grab and play some really thin necks, I find they're great for playing what I'm already good at playing, but for string new exercises and learning new songs I find it a little easier to go back to a fat neck, and as I progress and get better than I have an easier time of keeping things clean and clear on the slimmer necks. I've even found a wide neck with an extra string can be useful to learn and exercise on with the added string, and I'm working my way towards my 1st 8 string which should be a new even wider neck experience, but I'm nothing if I'm not forever learning right. :) Also, on hard copy books I still love them, and know many do for most anything new I try to learn. I'd definitely be interested in any you published. There's something to be said for being able to quickly and easily grab some hard copy reference materials off a shelf any time it's needed. Cheers Bernth. Keep up the great vids, I'm sure they're a huge help to many, as they are to myself bud.

So informative and great examples that inspire me as a guitarist playing for book trailers about comics, I like those lively fierce riffs and speeds!

I have 3 electric guitars that I enjoy shredding on, they are a first year edition Jem, a Wild Audio Odin, and a Dean Razorback. These all have a baseball feel to the necks as they have no finish on the back of the necks. I keep the action similar on all three although they have slightly different thickness with the necks. All three are amazingly sounding guitars.

Not a fan of thin necks, i produce much richer vibratos with thicker necks.. I learn alot from your videos and trying to change my pick hold also.. Thanks, God bless you

Your new found choice of guitar is interesting as I believe the AZ has a 12 inch fretboard radius. Always thought that whatever you are comfortable with will be what you play best on. There is no one size fits all.

Thanks So much Bernth. You and Jake Lizzio have been one the best youtube guitar teachers. If you could please share some alternate picking exercises pdfs for free that would be so great.

Great video a Bernth, as usual!! I have to comment on the ebook topic, YES they are still a thing!! I would definitely buy some exercise books from you!! Some of the better ebooks i own i actually printed out. Nothing beats having a physical book in front of you. I find it really annoying having to scroll on the computer etc. Guess im just old school ahaha

When I study theory I usually resource to books (also because I travel a lot so I can carry the info with me everywhere or on my kindle). For excercises I mostly check videos. Still I have some cheat sheets on my kindle ;)
