  • Welcome to Episode 4 of our long term build of the mighty 'Red Rooster' the Honda CRF300 L Rally. This is a joint project between Andrew Clubb, Editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine (AAB) and Dave Darcy of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV and Editor at Large for AAB.
In this episode it's crunch time. Time to fit the B & B tail rack and bashplate and Polisport handguards. As well as tinkering in the garage, Clubby and I get serious about discussing budget with a full and detailed picture of what we've spent revealed at the end of the build.
I'm preparing the bike for a ride with Nugget, so we know that's going to be extreme.
If you're interested in the previous episodes you'll find them at this link below.

I’m pleased your not crazy focused on a budget because with the DRZ , WR 250 R and DR 650 all being discontinued this bike is one of the few possible replacements that are lightish and under $20,000 and even T7 , 701, 690 need extras added to make them right . Keep up the good work men 👍

Very good points . My only thing is our freeway speeds are 70 if you are going slow and the limit is "65" mph , lol . That's a bit of an issue here in the states but not an impossible hurdle . You could time your rides in the busy areas if you are doing a long range deal .

Great channel! I love the 'buddy' aspect of this build series and the channel in general. Friendship is an important part of riding and wrenching... I drove 13 hours on Tuesday (Minnesota to Illinois and back) to pick up my new CRF300 Rally ABS - these bikes are just not available anywhere right now... The B&B bash plate and tail rack (in black finish) were waiting for me when I got home late Tuesday night. The customer service from the B&B team, managing my international shipment, was great. I appreciate finding competent professionalism and good service and wanted to chime-in for any potential clients in the states, that B&B got me these parts in a week from Australia and everything showed up in perfect shape. I'm trying my best to adhere to a budget for my build project too (although my wife doesn't think so) and Dave, your and Clubby's aftermarket selections are almost exactly what I've chosen for my little red Honda. I strayed a bit, electing to use the Zeta triple clamp bracket (front mount) to clean-up the handlebars and prevent the twisting that can occur when I will inevitably lay the Honda down too hard. I'm also pretty smitten with the body panels, so I'll probably order some bash bars for the sides... It's already a robust bike for a 300cc and a few hundred dollars of prevention outweigh any desire to limit weight by a few more pounds. Keep up the good work!

I never set a parts budget. I make a list of add-ons I want to do and prioritize them in order of importance. Then I simply work through the list as I can afford them. Eventually I get where I want to be without breaking the bank all at once. Also, I never worry about cost ratio of parts compared to purchase price of the bike. When you buy a bike it’s just a platform with potential. Turning it into what you want it to be may cost 2/3 the base price, but the hours of enjoyment to be had doing the customizations and the riding is priceless.

I know you have been going back and forth on the budget on the budget for this bike and it is certainly something everyone should think about when they buy any motorcycle but you have added what is necessary to make it a capable off-road bike and added the protection needed on just about every motorcycle you buy. Good to see the numbers so people understand how much you will probably spend in just about any bike you buy, some may not need suspension but will need about everything else you added.

Took the bike out and did a borderline hard enduro trail with the poor little bike first ride. I had to take a 3 pound sledge to the skid to beat it back in shape. I promptly ordered upgraded suspension and its much better now. Got the belly up where it should be.

You mentioned you would like to weigh the CRF…I might be able to help you with that. I own a business called Weighpro we weigh cars, caravans, boats and yes bikes. We are based in Sydney and we are mobile. We get individual weights for each wheel. So you can see where the weight is. My old DR650 was 176kg my current T7 is 228kg 😬 I weighed a 2022 KLR650 last week and that was 224kg. We might be able to work something out.

Thank you for a concise budget and fitment breakdown🙂,wrt to the would I spend an extra 2k for the suspension upgrade.Within the perspective of my old 80s adv rider weight etc ...I wouldn’t have any choice but to at a minimum upgrade the shock and spring, and most likely the fork springs.
My son is about to purchase one of these lil red machines and with his weight around 68kg it’s likely as an off-road learner...not mx..he won’t change the suspension out till he really wants to.
Lil itchy boots with her light weight also hasn’t required an upgrade but no doubt if she rode both modded and unmoved bikes an experienced rider would choose the upgrade.

His poor double cradle down tubes across the bottom of the engine where literally smashed in half across the length of them under the engine. Love this bike but humm, it is light compared to a big adv bike but it's not for a 300. I've spotted 1 or 2 second hand lowish K 701LR's for sale in NZ for about the same purchase and setup as the CRF which are almost the same weight but double the power. As you now have both it will be interesting to hear any advantages one has over the other for the same riding. Of course if your aim is a new bike the CRF wins price wise but it would be hard (for me anyway) to pass on the 701 if weight saving isn't there.

Most bikes need luggage, tyres, bashplate/rack etc. so I don't think they should be in the budget. In my eyes, the goal is to get this bike up to the same basic starting point as a premium adv bike and compare the cost v performance. The suspension sucks, so that was a must spend. The engine being 283cc is the bikes next weak point (and everyone will be looking for more power) so the fuel controller and exhaust are must haves IMO. Good luck.

If it's a budget build, why wouldnt you go with Aussie Barkbusters instead of those polisport hand guards. $40 cheaper too.

We've used Bark Busters on all our builds for years and years. They've recently changed hands .

I would prefer a silver bash plate. Already too much black on this bike for my liking.

Mmmm…yeah nahhh…for base of $9100 plus on roads (let’s call it $10k ride away) 25hp motorcycle then turning it into a $14k heavier weight motorcycle is really throwing good money after bad. It’s still a slow buzzy donkey and nothing will change that. Better off spending $14k on a used Africa Twin with 15,000kms on it (or a Tenere) and learning how to ride. Or find a good used DR650.
