Your channel is great. Keep the good job. Question: you said that in academia, as a postdoc, you get much supervision and mentoring, which helps if you are getting introduced to new technical experiences in your postdoc. On the other hand, that close supervision is less in industry. Does it mean that they, the hiring company, expect you to know all the techniques and methods they use from day 1, unlike in academia where it is acceptable that a postdoc can be just a higher level of trainee ?

I don’t think they expect you know everything. They just want you to be more independent and figure it out on your own. They don’t have the time to help as much as in academia.

What is the lab culture like in industry? In terms of experiments that need to be done, do scientists help each other out? or is it you are on your own, figure it out mentality?

From my experience people help each other out. Unless you’re starting up a new area in a company (or a new company itself) there should be some level of a support system for you to train and adjust.

is research in academia and Pharma industry similar? For example, I have heard that Pharma scientists apparently do not got as in depth with the science. How does research procedure differ in the two? For example in academia, it starts with 1) finding the unmet need 2) doing a literature review of the topic 3) setting up the experiment 4) collecting results 5) analysing results and writing the paper. Does Pharma research work that way or differently? I have heard that Pharma research doesn't involve doing the literature review and the paper writing part. Is that true?

Hi. I am a Research Assistant Prof. interested in moving to industry. What would be the right answer to justify this move? I was inclined to go on the academic route, now my 💙 is no more into it. Thanks

You want to be at the forefront of translational medicine that directly impacts a patient and you think industry is your best opportunity for that.
