- It’s happened to many of us, we’ve parked our motorcycle and then got busy with other things, Now it has been sitting for two years and it won’t run. We’ve replaced the dead battery, but now we have fuel-injection issues. Because the bike ran just fine when it was turned off last time, we can surmise the issue has to do with bad fuel gumming up the works. We are going to show you how to use Motion Pro’s Fuel Injector Cleaner to flush the crud from your injectors.
--
More than a handful of us have been there: You’ve parked your motorcycle after a ride, fully expecting to hit the road again a few days or weeks later. Now it’s been two years and you are ready to ride again, problem is, your bike isn’t. There are a multitude of issues, one of them could be plugged or fouled fuel injectors from old, gunky gas being pushed through the fuel injection system after you replaced the battery. Today on MC Garage we are going to show you how to clean your fuel injectors.
In our last MC Garage we covered step 1 on getting your bike back in the road-a new battery. You can see that episode here. Now that the bike turns over, you’ve got a FI code blinking on your dash. It all was good before the bike was parked, so you can safely surmise your issues come from bad fuel.
Fuel can go bad quickly, even in a matter of weeks. But in our case, two years has not been kind to the small amount of fuel in our tank. Volatile compounds evaporate and the gasoline then contains a gummy residue of the stuff that remains. Even worse, if your gas contained ethanol, it could attract moisture which can lead to corrosion in steel tanks and metal parts in the fuel pump and injectors.
But how do you get those injectors clean? Dump a bunch of fuel injector cleaner in the tank with fresh fuel and hope for the best? We are way past that, my friends. Maybe, and I stress maybe, if you are a month or two into sitting, this might work. But there is too much crud and gunk in the tank and lines to hope for the best now. It’s time to assume the worst.
It’s time to clean your injectors. And as daunting as that sounds, it’s actually pretty easy. Motion Pro makes a very nice tool that allows you to clean your injectors. First things first, you gotta get to your injectors. Disconnect the battery before removing everything you need to in order to access the injectors. For this GSX-R we need to remove the tank and airbox. Then we have to pull the bank of throttle bodies to get to both rails of injectors. Disconnect the injector connections, remove the hardware holding the injectors in the bodies, and then gently pull them out. Don’t torque on them too much or you might damage them. Then your snazzy Motion Pro Fuel Injector Cleaner will be useless.
First install the engine side of the injector into one of the two ports of the tool. Clamp down the injector with the connector facing the outside of the tool. Don’t overtighten the clamp, or you can damage the injector. You just want the O-ring to seal fully. Then install the connector for your model of bike to the tool and injector. When you press the red button, the tool’s internal 9-volt battery opens the injector solenoid to allow you to pass cleaner though the injector.
Loosen the red knob and insert the tube from an aerosol can of injector or carb cleaner. Tighten the knob back down lightly to seal the tube to the tool. Press the red button and then spray the cleaner through the injector to back-flush the unit. This will push out any debris that has accumulated in the injector. You won’t see a spray pattern here, just the fluid bubbling out.
Now it’s time to turn the injector around to clean the nozzle from the other direction. Remove the first O-ring and place the injector into the tool fuel supply side first. Once again use the clamp to seal the injector to the tool. Don’t overtighten the clamp and make sure the connector is facing toward the outside of the tool. Again, seal the tube with the red knob, press the red button, and dispense the cleaner. This time you should see an even spray pattern. If not, give it a minute to soak and try again. If you still have an issue, repeat the back-flush again.

"...as daunting as that sounds, it's actually pretty easy..."
I agree. This is not easy.
Hllo sir , where I buy thi injector cleaning tool
Hand talking champion 2020 nomination.
Just use a tire valve stem, heat shrinked on to the tube from a carb cleaner can. Then grab some speaker connectors and wire and a 9v battery. Way cheaper than the 200 bones motion pro wants and works great! I've done 2 bikes already.
Top idea. Thanks for sharing
I used super glue. No heat shrink. Worked fine.
Great video easy to understand and the boy is straght to the point, first-class, thankyou
This is awesome Justin, perfect for a winter project as well! I might try this on my track bike, to keep things optimum, and to get to know it better too. Looking forward to more content.
I finally got mine going, these are for sport bikes, I have a Yamaha Bolt cruiser. I'll make sure I'll use gas treatment on a regular basis.
Thank you for this video, my kawasaki vulcan had start up rough idling to where it cuts off now when it idle for a short time & when I kick it to 2nd gear it dont go at all. So I'm hoping this is a big resolution for the problems I'm facing with it. I was wondering how to get to the injectors & this video is perfectly shown how to do it. Thanks, I will provide a update after trying this out yo see how my vulcan 900 work now.
My bike was a 2 year old (2018)Suzuki floor model. Dl1000. Hadn’t been started since factory run and had about 2 liters of factory fuel in it. I put in an additional 5l. Primed the fuel pump 3 times. Hit the starter and she fired right up. I’ve got 600km on her now and zero fuel problems. Maybe the Japanese put a fuel preserver in when shipping them?
Could be that it was 0% ethanol fuel to start with. No ethanol - no gunk and while the old fuel by itself won’t run well adding fresh petrol makes it all work. Bike still doing fine?
if you can run the bike a couple of tanks with Techron will mostly do the trick.. Easy and cheaper that the $182 kit.
So put a battery on an injector and spray some cleaner through it, or pay $183 for a motion pro tool...You could probably just buy a new set of injectors for that price.
Msrp for ONE injector is $229. Your math checks out. ✔🤣
@@MustMoto thanks, I did a quick search and found much cheaper but maybe cleaning is more appropriate for higher quality injectors.
Got a yamaha 150 outboard, had poor performance, after 15 yrs. , and many hrs on the water. Took out the injectors, cleaned them , re- installed, engine ran good for about 1/2 hr, then , couldn't hit max rpms for anything, but, ran smooth. Did this a couple times. Ordered new injectors, installed, runs like new.
How odd I come across this as I'm looking to get the bike off the road after 2yrs of covid. Very good timing. Same code come up after I plugged the battery in and turn the key.
Gsxr as well
Nice job Justin. I was just looking at injector cleaning options! Reach out and say hi sometime!
If you don’t have that tool you could use a power probe. If you don’t have a power pole or that tool you can hook up ground and power to the battery and run it to the solenoid on the injectors and then blow air through it
Have 3 jump chargers and two new motorcycle batteries so at any time I'll have a fresh battery and charger. The 8 AWG terminal rings will allow gripping by alligator clips on the terminals so the battery can be charged in place. The threaded lugs on the battery posts need to be secured in place as to not fall of I side the bike frame somewhere and elevated so the threads of the bolts for the terminal will catch with all the terminal rings on them. This way I'm not tapping my toes waiting on batteries or chargers to fully charge.
Are some bikes worse for fuel going bad than others? Had my ‘86 Kawasaki Ninja 900 sitting for 8 years. Cleaned the chain, changed the battery, replaced clutch and brake fluids, and was on the road with zero issues.
Handy tool for sure
Dont think Iv ever had the need for an injector clean on any of the bikes Iv owned over the years.
Right just buy new ones lol
@@GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Why would I buy new if I dont have a fault?
@@GT6SuzukaTimeTrials or just take it to a service centre
I put royal purple in my Triumph and it started right up. After changing the battery and the plugs. It would not start. I put new gas in it and it still would not start.
Thank you for your info. Do you think this would help for a 07 Kawasaki zx14 whose FI error pops up and prevents the bike from constantly starting after riding?
Awesome tool, I love motion pro !
Still don't understand why so many videos on the tube don't show back-flushing. If a particulate has got in that's clogging the nozzle, the only way its getting out is the way it came in. All we see here is a simple CNC-machined block of aluminium to make it easier to blindly keep flushing and praying.
Hopefully this will work. 3 weeks over winter without starting leaves me with a bike that cranks but doesn't fire over. Complicating matters is the battery runs down quickly and there's no way to clip a charger on while in place. I bought some 8 gauge copper terminal rings for this purpose so I can charge in place. Shop will charge $500 to clean out fuel injection system and let's not forget flatbedding the bike to the shop and 2 Lyft rides, one back home and another to pick up the bike. Next winter will start every day to avoid this expensive hassle. For now I have to take the battery out to charge and try again.
I sorn my bike (Yamaha CP2 engine) for when the streets are covered with snow and ice (about 3 months this past winter) and it ran fine. However:
1. Last couple of tanks was 0% ethanol fuel.
2. When parked the tank was filled to the brim.
3. I was able to park it indoors in a reasonably dry reasonably warm garage.
Turning the bike over every day might just introduce more problems than it’s worth, if nothing else it’d drain the battery without giving it a chance to properly recharge. How did you solve this issue?
What if you don't have a mp cleaner
Great video, to the point ! Awesome!
THIS DUDE IS VERY ANIMATED LOL
just bought it dont waste your money
Don't damage the o-rings with certain chemicals. Wondering how to remove the screen from OEM injectors?
Great video - Thanks!
Nice Jt!
Brilliant !
I have a v star 950 which has been stood for over a year. I put a lithium battery in and the bike runs fine but I've noticed that the engine feels bogged down under acceleration. I've changed the spark plugs and this hasn't solved the issue. I'm thinking that the fuel strainer could be clogged. But given the symptoms I'm wondering whether any crud has made its way through the strainer. Engine runs great when not under acceleration and even under soft acceleration but when I turn the throttle harder the engine struggles but will run fine again when easing the throttle. Any idea whether this will be just a replacement strainer/filter and possible fuel pump clean or am beyond that with crap further in the system such as injectors ?
More than 2 years standing bike, diagnostics show no problem in injectors but after 2 tank refills, the bike is not working properly at all ( sounds like it's chocking for air, but worse ). I was thinking maybe it is a problem with the spark plugs, can you help me, am i missing anything?
What an amazing video! Do I need to resync the throttle bodies if we remove it on a fuel injected bike?
What if we don’t have that tool?
Wondering what this guy would consider as a daunting job.
Can you buy fuel injected cleaner and just add it to the gas?
🔴🔴🔴 Nice and nifty!... hope I don’t have to use it😎
Could you do a review of the OSET bike you bought one day ?
Super!!
Whoa dude clean injectors after a month of the bike sitting idle? Are you insane?
@Justin Dawes 1:20 "Maybe if you're a month or two into sitting"
@Justin Dawes aand if it doesn't work you suggest injector cleaning, after a month or two of sitting.
@0YouCanCallMeAl0 if you’re a month or two into sitting you can put injector cleaner in your bike to get it going. He’s not referring to a full cleaning. Where was the confusion? Lol
Hello ... and very difficult a job offer for motorcycle mechanics, I from Brazil
Gasoline going bad in as little as Several weeks.....uhhhh yeah......no! Several years sure, several weeks no!
what is the name of the tool for the injector
I just read the page he’s reading from lol
Will that work on Cars as well?
Rushing... do u have a time limit on your videos?
LOL for 200 bucks that the motion pro costs I'll just replace all the injectors and then go for a beer
In my case, 1999 Ultra, they quit making the injectors. Thanks Harley, over 20 years.
@@joestyles742Try quantum fuel products.
Where is part 3?
car with over 250000km and two bikes over 60000km. Never cleaned 1 single fuel injector and they run just like new
Where is Henning?
Why is it called an "o -ring "? When all rings are "o" ?
Because it's describing the cross-section of the ring, not that it's round.
Because stuff doesn't exist unless you name it?
+1 for RS Hunter’s response. There are many differently shaped ring cross sections like the square ring typically found on oil filters. Happy riding 😀
@@robertshunter darn you, geometry.
tautology....
I’m just throwing the bike in the trash before doing that....

Long advert
Good advertisement for the tool,i bet it cost a lot of money, nobodys gonna buy it
Must teach them properly if not they spray without open it and the dirty stuck inside the piston ring and damage the cylinder before it's jammed and destroyed.... I see alot STUPID idiot SPRAYING on intakes if CANNOT start and SPRAYING into turbo(if have) and all the dirty enter INSIDE and lead to OVERHAUL!!!!
