    It’s so great to see Holiday and Heidt together! I’ve followed both of their works, and it struck me that if everyone took to heart the lessons of the Stoics and the conclusions from Heidt’s research, we’d fix so many problems in our culture - e.g., political tribalism, mental illness, and cancel culture. Thanks to you both!

    Thank you for all your content. I have noticed that you often seem eager to dominate the space in conversations. I think this is a good example. It is overwhelming in this video. Why bring an expert to the conversation if you are just going to talk over him.

      @9y2bgy 3 месяца назад

      Well, as an aspiring SToic I like to listen to those who have wisdom to impart, and both are quite clearly full of them. In this scenario Ryan talks a lot considering Jonathan is the guest expert. But then, this is a dialogue in which Jonathan asked Ryan how Stoics would react to the untruths, and Ryan obliged. I think Haidt is just naturally a quieter person. And yet less words doesn't mean less content. His words are meaningful.

      I see Stoicism as 'right-wing' if anything. Seneca was a very wealthy man. Marcus Aurelius was an emperor. The four Stoic Virtues of 'courage and self-discipline and justice and wisdom' are the OPPOSITE of the way that many young leftist Western students conduct themselves today.

    Here we go again. Talking about things that don't matter. The only thing you need to be talking about it getting sh*t done. You shouldn't be talking about stoicism, or any other (ism) it's just a bunch of made of observations. for the average person There is talking about the thing and then there is doing the thing. Most people just talk about the thing and don't do the thing. Stop looking outside yourself for answers. Just use common sense and stop looking to see how others do it and just do the thing, don't base you life on wins an losses and just play the game, learn the game your playing and just play and learn and get better. Somehow everyone wants to turn everything into a science project.

    Thank you for the video!
    When we have discussions about even simple topics we always check if we have the same meaning for every word with the discussing partner. "Good", "bad". I know the time was limited to speak more about the meaning of the words but if it can be done, the discussion allowed to be more deeper.
    I liked it when you read those lines from Marcus. A person is rarely pure good or pure bad. One should have been close to enlightenment, the other should have been seriously mentally ill. Indeed we have this greyness instead of black and white. It would be nice to see this conclusion more often.

    Great error on this discussion where feelings are conflated as emotions. Feelings and emotions are 2 different things. Emotions are reactive responses to traumas embedded deep in the mind. The ancients called them samskaras. Feelings in the other hand are based on Self and Ego or the I Am. Just saying.

    I feel overwhelming regret and can't figure out how to snap out of it. I held on to an investment that would have made me a lot of money but because of a worthy reason I didn't sell. With hindsight I can see that the worthy reason was only an excuse I used in my head. I have accepted that it was greed and not that worthy reason that prevented me from selling. But I still struggle with not having sold. How can I get over my regret?

    • @zippobondo
      @zippobondo 3 месяца назад +4

      Regret is an emotion of low vibration. Even if it takes time, what you’re experiencing is grief and you have to let it process, feel the emotions and let it go. Practice at letting it go. The emotions and thoughts will return, when they do you have to look at it as momentum of thought. Are you going to dwell and let the emotion take over or acknowledge that you’ve processed it and let it go, therefore it no longer has power over your emotions?

    • @MeeCee5204
      @MeeCee5204 3 месяца назад +8

      I think the stoics would recommend a little introspection. For example, what is the real reason for your regret? Why does greed compel your actions? Are you worried about not having enough? Are you trying to impress someone? Is this a one-time occurrence, or do you feel and behave this way often? I think once you've answered questions like these, you'll know how to get over the regret, and you can prevent it in the future. I hope this helps.

      It's only a mistake if you learn nothing from it. You don't know if this is a good or bad event, youve only labeled it as you see fit. You cannot go back and change anything. Accept it, don't continually revisit it, learn, and recognize the next time you are in a similar situation.

      @@MeeCee5204 thank you very much for your reply. I will take what you have said and sit with myself to dig deeper.
      My son has various disabilities that prevent him from working, not giving up yet though. So the greed was to have enough if you will that I would be able to pass on to him. I'm not a show-off and more of a minimalist when it comes to spending.
      Definitely have learnt some lessons but way more to go.

    Hmm... I think your misinterpreting why "trust your feelings" is often given as advice. If your oppressed and have internalised that, how you feel is valid. In gay culture it's often discussed that the first policeman you must defeat is the one in your own head the one that won't let you advocate for yourself.
    You lads may not have had that experience of oppression but it's also not an endorsement of embracing your knee jerk reaction. It's about undoing compounded oppression.
    Also your definition of ally is only applicable to folks who do not work in activisim. Allies in activisim are allies are they don't agree on identity but have a common goal.
    If I may reccomend someone to interview: Mariame Kaba. There are some fantastic interviews on organising and activisim for the prison abolitionist movement and how to keep hope in the face of a cause that may not be solved in your life time.
    Hope is a discipline.

      No, it is not about "undoing oppression"; it is pure, unadulterated ego manifested as a victim complex ( whether justified or not). Please don't burden the world with your emotional baggage.
