The immortal Jeff Lynne, one of the finest singer/songwriters of our time. Don't know a single soul who doesn't like ELO.
Bazooka Joe : ) Cool platformer on Mega-CD or Saturn game with good music right? (Getting old memory level 72 and sinking)
This was a big hit in the skating rinks circa 1980-1984
If there is anybody that does not like them, then they are crazy
My favorite band was ELO. I saw them in concert in 1978 when they broke the symphony and the spaceship. Laser light show the whole thing was unbelievable at Madison square garden. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius no doubt about it.
I know somebody who doesn't, my brother. ELO is the greatest band of all time.
This song definitely belongs in music history. Can't stop moving either lol.
ELO has a lot of good ones.
I used to roller skate to this song in the late 70's
Me too! I can't here this song without remembering the disco ball spinning on the ceiling. 🛼 🥰❤
A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Lynne shouts "Bruce!" In the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback and elsewhere, Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting."[7] Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in.[7] After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.[8][9][7]
ELO engineer Mack remembers the genesis of the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce."[7]
Grew up on ELO, always loved them remember getting shit on the school bus for liking ELO, weird thing was I loved all the music the cool kids thought was cool also, always thought it was Bruce as well until Professor of rock educated me, lol..
I always related Bruce to being that cat that thought he was the coolest that was bringing everyone else down cause they weren’t as cool as him or he was stealing your girl, still one of my fav ELO songs.
Thanks so much for this, Barrie! I always heard it as "Bruce" -- and wondered who that guy was... (but kind of assumed it was a mondegreen - I term I learned a few years back, and LOVE that you use it here) -- anyway - it's particularly funny to me right now, b/c I've had this friend "Bruce" for over ten years, and we share a lot of musical history/tastes - even unusual ones from the late 70's "new wave" era - anyway, a few years ago, I was surprised when Bruce told me he just "never liked ELO" - of course, I'm sure it had nothing to do with this little line... BUT - a few months ago, my youngest sister was desperate for a place, and my good friend offered to let her rent a room from him -- which seemed to be working fine for a few months -- then, "out of the blue" - he said he'd rather she found another place as soon as possible (that worked GREAT... so no need for a long story) -- but when she told me, she was kind of blind-sided, so one of the first things I thought about was this: "Don't bring me down.. Bruce!" -- lol -- sorry for the long, lame story, but I totally appreciate your comment, and hope to hear more... all the best!
@@GinMae 😁 you love that he copy/pasted it here
I always thought it was "grouse " pronounced "groose". Never thought Bruce 🤣
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius !!..... Master musician , he can play EVERY instrument .... and superb lyricist too..... Producer and Arranger ....Nothing is beyond him...
Hit up ELO Telephone Line next. It's a whole different direction.
Wembley live version
ELO had their biggest hits in the 70's-80's & mixed modern rock pop songs with classical overtones. Jeff Lynne wrote most of their songs. They had a lot of great hits such as "Roll Over Beethoven", "Showdown", "Can't Get It Out Of My Head", "Evil Woman", "Strange Magic", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line", "Rockaria!", "Do Ya", "Turn to Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Wild West Hero", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Shine A Little Love", "Last Train To London", "Confusion", "Hold On Tight", "Twilight", "The Way Life's Meant To Be", "Here Is The News", "Ticket To The Moon" etc.
They are so not 80s.
They formed in 1970 from the band The Move which formed in 1965.
your last 5 songs are ALL on the Twilight CD, so Asia and BJ might try doing a continuous reaction to those 5 or perhaps a reaction just to the CD
Don't forgot Rockaria and the Jungle
And Jeff just got better with age
One of the greatest bands in the history of music. Lynne was a master.
Electric Light Orchestra!! Rocked!!
Love this song my favorite is TIGHTROPE ! The orchestration is terrific. You’ve never heard anything like it !
Love tightrope, one of the best.
ELO was one of the bands we used to play when my unit was attached to protection duties in refugee camps when I was in the British Royal Marine Commandos. We found their music was always a amazing way to reach the refugees, especially the children, by dancing badly along to the songs. The children were always the first to show us how to dance along properly, we leant that after listening the Queen's performance during Live Aid in 1985 whilst my company was in Ethiopia.
You could go down a long, deep rabbit hole with this band
ELO has a huge inventory of hits
My mom use to dance to this song in the kitchen. She was a teen in the 70's. Brings me back a good memory 🙂
Love ❤️ ELO one my favorite groups.
A Great lost classic....love this song!
ELO's duet "Xanadu" with Olivia Newton-John is a classic in its own right.
The phrase "Bruce" used in the chorus is actually "Vroose" - a sound-word made up by one of the band that was sung in practice and Jeff Lynne thought it so good he added in. It doesn't mean anything in particular, but most people think its "Bruce" for some reason.
I remember hearing this on the radio in the car when I was a kid in the late 70’s -early 80’s & I gotta say….i STILL love this song 🖤by looking at me you’d never guess that in a million years 🤷🏼♂️😉but good is good 🤓it was HUGE at the skating rink
A Brilliant Band So Many Great Hits That All Bring Great Memories Flooding Back. Love Both Of You In These Reviews😊👍
Yesss! Glad to see y’all back like you never left! Love this song! My favorite of theirs- second fav of theirs is “Telephone Line.” PLEEEEASE react to that one as well- love y’all! In case nobody’s told you-😁💖💙👍✌️
This is the very definition of a high energy song!
Jeff Lynne is in the Traveling Wilburys.
Glad to see you back
I bought the "Discovery" album in 1979 and I'm pretty sure that they don't sing "Bruce", but "Groos". Anyway, a great album
For more of the orchestra, check out "Roll Over Beethoven", "Rockaria" or "10538 Overture"
Loved this back in the day- danced to this all night.
Your reaction is spot on happy!
Love me some ELO!!
Great reaction- typical ELO ...make you smile and move everytime. Jeff Lynne.a musical genius.
ELO is different from any other band they have great a great sound
Another great pick great song. Very popular song u prob hear somewhere.
Killer radio track from the days when disco was burning brightest just before it imploded. Imagine it stripped of the techno recording wizardry down to a boogie-woogie piano stomp ---as old as it was new.
That song has been used in a few commercials and films over the years ..you have probably heard it in passing at least once.
The lyric video got the words wrong......the song says dont bring me down groos.. not Bruce though i admit i said bruce for many years until i saw the lyrics to the song in the album insert
Yup, it was just meant to be a sound, like some of the doo-wop kind of syllables he has in other songs. Jeff Lynne has since given in and gone with the crowd and started singing 'Bruce' in live performances.
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. Producer, musician, singer.... check out The Traveling Wilburys. Jeff, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison. Talk about a Supergroup!
Play strange magic by ELO
"Strange magic" is pure magic. It should be another one if theirs in your list. And "telephone line"
jeff lynne, alongside dylan, paul simon and lennon/mccartney probably the finest songwriter ever. dozens of great songs and hits. two bands, e.l.o. and the traveling wilburys. he even produced the very last beatles album.
Last train to london
You two are so funny!
You need to check out The Diary Of Horace Wimp, one of ELO's finest or Wild West Hero. ELO are one of those artists that everyone loves like Blondie, Bob Marley & Abba.
dont know where "bruce" came from , the lyrics to the song are =You got me runnin', goin' out of my mind You got me thinkin' that I'm wastin' my time Don't bring me down No, no, no, no, no Ooh-ooh-hoo I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down You wanna stay out with your fancy friends I'm tellin' you, it's got to be the end Don't bring me down No, no, no, no, no Ooh-ooh-hoo I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down Don't bring me down, groos Don't bring me down, groos Don't bring me down, groos Don't bring me down What happened to the girl I used to know? You let your mind out somewhere down the road Don't bring me down No, no, no, no, no Ooh-ooh-hoo I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down You're always talkin' 'bout your crazy nights One of these days, you're gonna get it right Don't bring me down No, no, no, no, no Ooh-ooh-hoo I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down Don't bring me down, groos Don't bring me down, groos Don't bring me down, groos Don't bring me down You're lookin' good, just like a snake in the grass One of these days, you're gonna break your glass Don't bring me down No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Ooh-ooh-hoo I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down You got me shakin', got me runnin' away You got me crawlin' up to you everyday Don't bring me down No, no, no, no, no Ooh-ooh-hoo I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down, down, down, down, down, down I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor Don't bring me down
Asia & BJ, thanks for continuing with ELO, they rock! Next from their catalog, please react to the song, *"Evil Woman"* It's a total banger, an awesome vibe, and you'll both love it! (Use the studio version.) Thanks for all you do, and Happy New Year! :)
Totally agree!!
ELO is the bomb!
Doctor Who incidental music has been performed by an orchestra since its 2005 return, and it certainly isn't boring.
Jeff Lynne the humble genus. Total electricity and coolness.
"Show Down" is my favorite ELO, and was also a favorite of John Lennon's. It has a funky back beat compared to their other songs. Would love to hear your reaction to 'Show Down".
Before George Harrison past away some huge money was offered to the Beatles to regroup with Jeff Lynn of ELO in John Lennon's spot.
This song was and is still played at the skating rinks.
Everyone used to start dancing at parties in the 70s when ELO came on.
This song is a call out to the media in general - that's all they do - find news to bring everybody's vibe down - fear, paranoia, hate, panic - oh, and while you're in that state, BUY SOMETHING TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER !!!
Love ELO, they weren't an actual Orchestra, but a rock band from Birmingham. Keep up the good work guys love what ya doing 👍
You both are so fun. God bless you both!
BJ's funky shoulder dance had me laughing, and then Asia saw it and I was in tears lol.
Love me some ELO...They had the upbeat stuff and some good laid back vibe stuff..."Roll over Beethoven" is another up beat song if you liked this one.
More ELO!
Hi Asia & BJ, after The Beatles, K.C. & the Sunshine Band & E.L.O. were the fun bands whose new singles you looked forward to in the charts.
Wow I use to listen to them in highschool library they had music, highschool dance, awesome, good review yeah 🎸🥁🎤👌😄👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jeff Lynne wrote and recorded this without the band, playing all the instruments himself. Which is why there is no string on this song.
Now for another high-energy song you need to take 'The Last Train To London'. 🚉
(If it's a lyric video by the same person, they'll probably write 'LOST Train To London'. 'Bruce' indeed.)
Just listening to your comments at the end, watch ELO in one of their Wembley concerts from 2017. Not the same line up (save for Jeff Lynne) but you get to see the whole 'orchestra'.
Actually they really are not an orchestra. go on you tube and watch some of their earlier live performances. they are a rock and roll band that decided to incorporate other string instruments. I saw them in concert in 1973, my first concert and I still listen to their music almost every day.
hey guys take a look at "A Love So Beautiful written and produced By Jeff Lynn for Roy Orbison
Love to these two lovelies
You can always tell a Jeff Lynne song -- Traveling Wilburys for instand. This is probably my favorite.
Love you all! ELO is one of my all-time favorite bands, along with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and The Eagles. Jeff Lynne of ELO did a lot of songs with Tom Petty!
What a fun song this was! For another song by the same title, listen to the Animals “Don’t Bring Me Down”. 60’s British Invasion blues rock - the guys that made “House Of The Rising Sun” the eternal classic that it was and is.
Asia might be remembering the original video, in that at the start I think it is Donald Duck dancing around, having a great time. Maybe she saw that somewhere, but this has probably been in plenty of movies by now as well.
Jeff Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows. ELO engineer Reinhold Mack remembers the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce.
hahaha the lyrics. I love how everybody gets it wrong (including me) but Jeff Lynne ran with it at times. He said it was a type of nic name 'Groos' but some how it ended up 'Bruce'
Another great singer that is my moms fav is Leon Russell- Tight rope.
Just good fun music. This band always delivers. 🌺✌️
To get an idea of their variety of songs…..Rockaria, Telephone Line and The Diary of Horace Wimp….. they have quite a large hit list.
The total genius of Jeff Lynne
Love your guys reaction and appreciation for older music. Awesome
When I was growing up, this song was a staple in roller skating rinks everywhere. The sound of this song playing while people bang their skates on the wood in rhythm was pretty wild back in the day.
ELO has been considered the musical heirs of the Beatles. If you listen to "A day in the life" and then follow it with ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky" it slaps you in the face pretty readily. Lynn produced the Beatles at one point after Breaking from ELO for a while. He has reconstituted the band and gone back out on tour with the old titles in the last decade or so and still kickin it.
Who is Bruce? The immortal ELO question LOL. Please check out ELO's Jeff Lynn in Traveling Wilburys. Great 1990s group of superstars and put out some amazing songs.
Jeff Lynne of ELO fame was in a super group for a while, with Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and George Harrison from 1988 - 1991 called The Traveling Wilburys. "Handle With Care" ruclips.net/video/1o4s1KVJaVA/видео.html and "End Of The Line" ruclips.net/video/UMVjToYOjbM/видео.html were the two best in my opinion of the 2 albums they recorded. Vol. 1 & Vol. 3. Lynne was an exceptional musician, and added to whatever endeavor he was a part of.
My goodness is Asia you have the most amazing smile! BJ I loved how you seemed so happy to this song. I've loved this song starting around 7 years old.
Great song great motivation I can see why there is a dance video of women doing the shuffle to it and it's fun to watch also
This was skating music when I was a kid. Great stuff!
Someone recorded this song adding clips from movies and cartoons. Absolutely fun, absolutely fantastic.
ELO - Living Thing
BJ was into a good Groove and Asia just kept bringing him down😅
I think you will like " Four little diamonds " of this band!
I love BJ’s reaction and Asia’s reaction to him! Lol☮💜
Onoe of their last big hits. I think this the first ELO song without a string section.
this song was used in a lot of flashmobs dancing
Sew ELO live in 85. They were brill.
Jeff spent part of his career in a band with his friends George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan in "The Traveling Wilburys" who are worth checking out too.
Still holds its own some 45/50yrs on:)
'Tightrope' is one of their awesome greats for sure!
I like the shoulder shuffle!! 😂😂
Major disco vibes!!!
Rock N Roll is King !
This song was used in the movie
"Super 8" soundtrack.
They also had a song in the XANUDA
Another great Brummie beat band the same as the Moody Blues. Can I suggest Jeff Lynne's ELO - Telephone Line (Live at Wembley Stadium). It is just magic. And a Brummie is a person from Birmingham aka Brum in England like me lol.Cheers and Have a look at Duran Duran Ordinary World. A smashing song from another band from Birmingham.Cheers and all the best from England.
Asia, you are happiness in a person. Your sense of humour and hypnotic personality are magic. Never change Princess xxx
That groove was coming out of him
A popular tune in the last fifteen years though this is not one of their best. So many better ones, like Tightrope, Telephone Lone,Do Ya, Rollover. Beethoven ,And Sweet Talkin’’ Woman.
