  • What better time to rebuild a larix bonsai than winter? In this video I go through the process of cleaning up a bonsai trunk, pruning and wiring a Larch Bonsai in preparation for the spring growing season.

Great Jelle! MY larches are new and still under snow. Won't be long before I can try some of your advice. Thanks.

This tree is lovely! Inspiring for an Aussie with no real life knowledge of how these trees age and mature in nature.
I have a question about the scar at 11:30 where you look at opposite wiring to previous scars. It makes sense for me to do it opposite and thus reduce the scar. Other advice seams to be to wire in the same direction to reduce the risk of breaking the branch; which is also a reasonable explanation. Is one more right than the other, or is it dependent on intent and extent of movement intended?

Can you wire a larch at any time after the needles has dropped, as long as its not frozen?

I am starting to rethink when I can safely wire my Larches. I had some really bad experiences with branch die off a few years back so have been quite conservative and waiting until buds 'just' start to show life. Have you had any negative experiences as a result of doing this work at this sort of timeof the year? Cheers - another great video

Never had any trouble with Larch. I find them to be bullet-proof in winter.

Just got a new larch from a nursery and was itching to prune it until I saw Xavier’s larch video. And now this from Jelle. What to do? ;)

From myy perspective I have had some issues with dieback BUT Jelle and many others show you can carry out this work now. I think climate is crucial - we are about to go through another freezing snap. 'My preference' is to wait but that doesbt mean other people are wrong. Jelle definitely knows what he is doing :)@@ebcornell23

This tree froze for a week right afterwards.. Light frosts should be no issue (Especially if you do not make big twists and bends)
