Tankless Water Heater Questions

- Tankless water heaters are becoming more and more popular. They are extremely efficient and will help you save plenty of space if you currently have a storage tank water heater.
Do they save on the electric bill? Yes and no. If you have an older water heater, they should save you money.
However, the efficiency difference between the new storage tank water heaters, which are extremely efficient, and tankless heaters, is minimal.
SInce you're not storing water in a tankless unit, it may save you money on your water bill, but, watch out for teenagers taking longer showers once they discover that the hot water doesn't run out.

Does it matter what height the unit is installed? Can it be installed in a cabinet? TY
Got a quad-tandem 20amp breaker that controls the air handler and the water heater using 12 guage wire so looks like im out on this one. Thanks for the video.
Swap out the wire to 6/3 wire & 60 amp Beaker.
Ok , so if you divert a bit of the output to the incoming cold water "shouldn't take much" you could use a lower amp unit in more applications and in colder environments .. If a check valve is used with hot to cold intake , should instantly boost incoming temp for lower amp application to use a smaller unit in places where a high amp unit can't be installed , Right ? .... I'm thinking the unit will only heat to a specific range so it shouldn't have thermal runaway in that scenario .
thank you for this info.
my pleasure if you have anything else you'd like me to do a video abot please let me know
Good morning, Question: I reside in Vero Beach, 150 miles north of Miami. Wondering if the retex 13 would be able to keep up with a top loading Maytag washing machine. The would only be servicing a bath sink, washer, kitchen sink, & a dishwasher. Thank you very much.
the RTEX13 we sell will keep up with any 2 fixtures at a time (excluding bath tub) in the Florida area
Just found your video on tank tankless water heater, I'm gonna install one in my home, which one would you recommend for single people, heater will be install in utility room 30 feet from bathroom, live in Alabama, what is your price on installing on the unit I need, your video was very helpful, answered alot of questions, best video on these heaters, Thanks.
For 1 bathroom the 13 should be enough even in Alabama but if you have enough power available i would suggest the 18 just to be safe. unfortunately we don't install in Alabama
You are so right about teenagers. I was one of them lol. Thank u.
i was to a long time ago glad you enjoyed the info
Can we take that small plug on the pins inside and switch the 13kw to the 08kw
Yes sir I have the Rheem 3 Chamber we have a pretty big house 3 children. I'm have problems with flow. If I have 1 faucet on then the tankless doesn't heat up. If I turn on 2 faucets it heats up fine. The unit is about 1 year old. I took the flow valve off to see if it was dirty, cleaned it all screens still same issue. Please advise.
did it work wit only 1 faucet for the last year and this problem just start now?
Live in Michigan... I guess you need two water heaters then right.
I've had unlimited solar hot water for next to free and never bothered to run any two hot water needs at once. So 18KW would work in Michigan for me.
We purchased the small thankless heater you have on your video We installed it about a month ago now it's making a humming Sound is it normal, We live in Texas and have one shower only
they could make a low humming noise but i've never had anyone complain about it
Question: Is it worth adding a 13 kw to an in addition to an existing tankless heater (in the garage) system? I see ...... closing the gap in temperature may reduce electricity usage but a can’t confirm that, i am not a plumber and no one can answer my question. What’s your take on this? Summer is approaching and will be renovating bathroom. I’m on a need to know right now. What would happen if I added a Retex 13 Rheem Etwh in line from existing tanks coming in across the entire house up stairs to the third floor (master bath). FYI Etwh will live in storage closet with a wall separating closet from bathtub
It would help with getting th3 hot water there faster but you will use more electricity
Thanks for the video. Mine just stopped giving out hot water at 58 degrees celsius. It was fine 2 days ago but suddenly I'm getting warm water. Any suggestions? Is there a factory reset?
Same, mine stopped working. Is there a reset on the small electric water heater?
Thanks for the video. I have a question for you: Which one is better in cost (upfront, installation and running )? 1. conventional electric tank heating system 2. One big tankless electric water heating system or 3. Mini-Tank Point-of-Use Electric Water Heaters at multiple points (2 in bathrooms and one in kitchen for dishwasher and sink).
Upfront cost would be whatever you have now so you don't have to do any re-piping or electrical work. to change from tank to tankless or vice versa you will have to do some re-piping and some electrical work
option 3 is worst of the bunch option 1 would be the best because of the upfront cost but option 2 would be cheaper to replace whenever the water heater needs replacement
i would rate your option in the order you have them 1 is best 3 is the worst
Question: I just tried to install a 13Kw Rheem Classic Series (like the one in this video. This is my first time with this size. Prior to this, we've only installed 18Kw Models. Never any issues whatsoever. On this unit the install was simple, checked and rechecked everything on the unit, our wiring, and plumbing, but when we run it, the digital readout cuts off shortly after we turn on the unit and after we set the temperature. The read out comes on when we turn the knob, but when we run the water... nothing, no hot water and the digital readout remains off. Nothing is tripping. We're baffled. The only thing we see that's out of the ordinary is the number 5100 comes up when we first turn it on. Installed on the wall next to the breaker box so no issues there either. Any thoughts here?
I don't see any error code of 5100 but there is an error code S103 which is low voltage coming in. if this is the error code you are getting then you have the wrong power coming into the water heater
I have a retex 18 volt unit. The temp of the water in the master bath (ink an d shower) and kitchen are great wiht hot water but the guest bath sink and shower get no hot water. How can this be. its the same house and heater? Also laundry does not get hot. what do i do to fix these areas?
That is a plumbing issue not a water heater issue. The water heater only knows to make hot or not making not where to send it
I have the Rheem 18kw tankless electric water heater. Water stopped getting hot after a storm. Only shows display if I push the on/off, set temp button. Not able to get any hot water. Is there a reset button for this unit?
no there is no reset for these units just the on/off switch
Hi , I have a question about grounding my water heater. I have a square D panel, ground and neutral are together. not like old panels that one side for neutral and the other for ground. Is it safe to ground my water heater even they are together ground and neutral? thanks very much in advance.
i don't know the answer to that question that would be for an electrician to answer
It’s safe for your main panel to be ground and neutral all together
Hello, we have the Rheem 18 you use on your video, my question is, the unit is installed very close to the kitchen, so the hot water in the kitchen comes out very hot but the bathroom which is further than the kitchen the water comes up warm, I watched your video so we turned it up to 140 and now the kitchen water is super hot but the water in the bathroom is still not very hot, any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
i would check the mixing valves in you house. your washing machine and all your single handle faucets have mixing valves built in if they are not working right it might not let the right amount of hot water to get to your shower. start by turning off the 2 (hot and cold) valve behind your washer then use the shower if that's not it and you have a single handle shower get a plumbing to check the cartridge in the handle
Miami Water Heater ok I will check that, the only thing that is a little strange to me was that prior to replacing the regular water heater for the tankless one, everything was working properly but now with the new tankless one is when it started doing that, both the faucet and the shower in the bathroom, this is a small house it only has one bathroom, the bathroom sink has two handles but the shower has a single handle. But I’ll check what you told me to check. Thank you so much for the advice and thank you for taking the time to reply!
@@solvibe5698don't check all that. That's not it. It was fine with your tank. It's the way these work and closer to tankless will be hotter. I guess he just doesn't know...
How long does the water heater take to ship to the west coast right now?
We ship out the next business day so I’d say about 3 to 5 days to the west coast
hi i have 20 inch rainfall shower would the 18kw maintain a strong flow on the big shower head
what is your incoming water temperature
Hello! Is the Rheem X3-13 sufficient for a washer, dishwasher and sink faucet? these sometimes will be used simultaneously. Will it work?
depends where you live (incoming water temperature
@@miamiwaterheater2281 Hello it will be in the Houston TX area.
I would recommend rtex -18
Hooked my 5.5 to 30 amp. Power is at the plug for sure but wont power on when I press the power. Does it have to be plumbed in first to get a reading?
Yes and if you turned on the power with no water in the unit you probably burned out the element
@@miamiwaterheater2281 power on for only a second or two
That’s all it takes hopefully the element didn’t dry fire but it’s doubtful
What unit do you recommend for a 2 bathroom home in NYC? 24kw or 36kw ? I only have 200amp service.
The RTEX18 will work but the RTEX24 would be ideal
@@miamiwaterheater2281my neighbor has the 18kw water heater for a 3br 1 bath apartment and he said in the winter when temperatures drop below 30 degrees the water heater struggles to keep water warm when showering he increases temp to 130* and reduces inlet water pressure by almost 50% just to take a hot shower. he also changed shower head from a 12inch water fall shower head to a small water saver shower head 🚿 so he can take a hot shower. I would also like to ask is it necessary to install some kind of filtration system to extend the life of water heater? He has currently had the rheem 18kw heater for over 2 years now he loves it in the summer but said if he had a chance to do it over he would have gone a little bit bigger. Any insight you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance 🙏
yes it is undersized he should have put in a 24 or 27 kw. as for the filter it depends on the quality of your water, for example in Miami, FL we do not need one unless you have well water. With that said a filtration system isn't going to hurt the unit
Do you guys know if the smaller one could potentially be installed under a kitchen sink?
yes it can so long as there is access to run electrical and plumbing
Do they have strainers on the inlet valves?
yes they do
Thanks so much for posting this video…I have read other posts, but I juy want to know for sure…I have a 1100 sq Ft home- 2 bdr, 1 bath, one person lives there…will a 13 kw tankless water heater work?
depends where are you located
Good morning…I forgot to mention that…I’m in Los Angeles, CA.
Thanks so much!
yes it will for 1 fixture at a time
@@miamiwaterheater2281 but if I want to run my shower and washing machine at the same time (or the shower and any other appliance at the same time) would you recommend I go up to 18kw?
if you have the power available then yes i would recommend an 18
Hot dog! Great video sir. Way to go
Will a 30amp 120v supply run the smaller unit
yes that will work for the RTEX04
My back nabor heater wasnt working and now my hot water isnt runing can u tell me why what the reason would b?
if the heaters are not in the same house they have nothing to do with one another. to see what is wrong we would have to check them. if you'd like you can call me at 305-633-3656 and i'll try to give you some guidance or set up a service call for you
I Want to know if it has to be 40 breakers or can i use 30 because i can't find the 40
For the rtex08 it has to be a 40 amp beaker with a #8 wire
I installed one of these it’s my first time installing one of these I ran # 8 on a 40 amp breaker it worked great for a month but now it doesn’t want to turn on now my voltage is still good going to the unit but it doesn’t turn on... can you please help me figure this out. Thanks!
What unit do you have need the details
I have the same issue
I needs 54amps from a 60volt breaker
I have an electric rheem 18kw. I put the temp to 130 and got an ES on the display. What does that mean?
is it ES or E5? e5 is water flow issue usually to much water running thru the unit to allow it to get the the desired temperaature
What about E2? Same unit. I get an E5 when I run the washing machine and the tub faucet (+3GPM rating) so I get the extra water flow error.
No one can solve E2 though, it magically doesn't exist anywhere on the internet. I have pictures.
You guys have installers? Need to convert from tank to tankless.
yes we do
please call us 305-633-2656 so we can help size it for you and give you an estimate
Hi, ? about RTEX 13, 13KW unit. I'm in MIAMI. If you only use 1 faucet or shower, does that mean only 1 heating element is on , so it would only draw 6500 watts ? Thanks
no both eldements will turn on the water flow will be higher
Hello i live in San Diego and i can get a rheem 220v 8 kw one or a 13kw just like the small one you have on this video, we only have one bath and we going to be running one service at a time, we just use hot water to take baths. Maybe clean the dishes but never at the same time. Which one do you recommend 8lw or 13kw? Its a family of 3.
If you have the power available I would recommend the 13 difference in price is very small so not worth going to the smaller one
@@miamiwaterheater2281 Actually the 13kw is cheaper in this store, but do you think i will save on energy bills with the 8kw Or is not worth it?
Not worth it
@@miamiwaterheater2281 I forgot to say Thank you. You are making the transition to new and better technologies easier. With out taking advatange of people
Glad I could help. If you have anymore questions don’t hesitate to ask
I opted to go with a smaller 19 gallon 120 volt 1500 watt water heater on a timer running it two hours a day at best; one hour in the morning and one hour at night. Yes, my showers had to be shorter, but at best 3 kilowatt hours a day to heat the darn thing, pretty good! I'm looking at the Titan 11.8 and the EcoSmart 11 and I'm saying to myself if between my shower, washing dishes, using the sink that adds up to one hour of hot water use, that's 11 or 12 kilowatts. I keep waiting for someone to tell me how are these things more efficient. To install one of these as a point of use, they may be great for space but there's the wiring to consider and a dedicated circuit in the panel. That wire isn't thin. Now that I have a lady in my life, I have to consider this all over again; tankless or tank, but the math doesn't change. Yes, I'd have unlimited hot water while in use but having taken steps to be as efficient as possible it's the tank system that saves me money and grief of having not to rewire my panel or the wiring throughout my house to accomodate either it at the location of my tank of point of use, still, what I'd give to take a 30 minute shower and not be ran out in under ten minutes!
Do I need to vent the 13 ??
No you only need to vent gas water heater
@miamiwaterheater2281 Awesome; appreciate the quick response!👍
What if you wanna hook it up to solor panels
Water or electric solar panels
Im in mich and have a well And blater tank would something like this work for me
i would not recommend tankless for you
Run Dual Retex-13 that’s less breakers, with 26KW total.
I have a brand new retex-18 installed everything is install correctly we had a electrician come out and verify that the wires where right but we are not getting any type of hot water our apartment is only 350 square feet it’s not that very big we had a plumber come out and take a look at it but still nothing! Anything will help!
what is showing on the display
Nothing everything is working fine just not getting any hot water
what is showing on the display when you open a hot water faucet? if nothing is showing most probably the right power is NOT getting to the heater less likely is the pc board is bad
Why would my unit's breaker hum at the low temp but not high temp setting?
Never heard that one before but if the noise is coming from your breaker i would imagine the breaker is defective.
@@CARLOSSANCHEZ-vz3fp no tried several found where others have same problem if left temp. all the way up, no hum only when turneddown??..thyanks for responding still is weird ???
So Im in Washington st. And it gets to 8 degrees, so the 13KW wont work for me?
no but the 18 should
Im working on a tiny house and would like to be able to use the shower, a sink, dishwasher and washer at the same time if needed. Which heater would be best? Thank You
Sooo technology connections has a good video on dish washers and he stated you don’t need hot water to the dish washer as it’s built to heat the water when it’s needed. Not sure if this matters or your stance on that but TC is pretty reliable.
What with work in northern climates like northern Pa ( well water I guess 50 degrees
how many bathrooms and people

Where are you in Miami?
miami water heater

miami, fl 33142
Also I'm using 10awg wire with the 13kw and dual pole 30amp will that work
No you need 6awg wire with a dual pole 60 amp
@@CARLOSSANCHEZ-vz3fp I switched the pin fuse inside from 13 to 8kw it worked 40amp
@@CARLOSSANCHEZ-vz3fp think I still need 6awg for 40 amp?
you don't, 8 awg is enough for 40 amps but if you want to use 6 you can that will work
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it gets colder than 70 degrees in the winter in Florida.
just cause the temperature outside gets colder doesn't mean that the water gets as cold as it is outside
not water temperature that is 70 degrees the coldest
What do the flashing lights mean
I'm having trouble keeping it going
are you talking about flashing lights in the unit or through out the house
Wat size wire is required
depends on which heater you are asking about but we do have all the specs on our website
Miamiwaterheater.com
Code where I live is 3/4 water lines in and out 1/2 inch is worthless
I have a 13 w Rheem and it keeps turning going from hot to cold then hot again
that is probably not the heater. I think your problem is in 1 of the mixing valves between the shower and the heater.
Good morning sir. What's the installation price on the top selling machine. I have a 1 family house with 2 shower 2 faucet with 220 electric box
The RTEX13 would be $250.00
Great price. Wish you were in nyc.
Why no one says what is the gage of the AC wire is????????
the RTEX13 requires a 60 amp breaker #6 wire and the RTEX18 requires 2 separate 40 amp breakers each with #8 wire all of the spec are also on our website www.miamiwaterheater.com
Good prices.
thank you
So this runs on 240??
Yes 240 volts
We're looking into getting a tankless unit. I am some what handy and I resect electricity. I know just enough to get hurt. No I mean not to get hurt. Been there, not going back. But I'm still learning how to work with it and I know when to call a licensed electrician. Well in this case I am trying to do myself. My question is, you had said that the amp service needs to be 200. We've got a small 2 bedroom 1 bath mobile home with a 150amp breaker at the main on the inside main panel. The A/C use to run through that inside panel, but it's been moved to the outside power pole. Why? That's unknown. Are we able to use a double 40 breaker? Or I am going to need to change out the service panel too?
if you are in South Florida an rtex13 is more than enough and uses 1 60-amp breaker. if you are north Florida or further north then you would need an RTEX18 which uses 2 separate 40-amp breakers
@@CARLOSSANCHEZ-vz3fp, Thank You for the reply. We are in the Orlando area. With the 60-amp, if I may ask. Should I use 6ga or 8ga wire?
6 GA
My light doesn’t want to turn on why?
either there is a problem with the power going to the heater or the pc board has gone bad
RHEEM RTEX-18 240V (2-40A double-pole breakers) 'E2' error code. What is the fix for this? I have ZERO hot water when this code is on. That's right every once in awhile it actually works and works extremely well WHEN it works.
NO ONE has been able to answer this or help me resolve the issue.
Bad news is, E2 indicates that there's an issue with the outlet thermistor. Good news is, there's a temporary workaround until you can get a replacement unit.
Turn on the hot water so you see E2, then press and hold the knob for 3-5 seconds. Afterwards the panel will read CE2, let the water run for a few minutes more and check for hot water. Following this the temperature will be locked at 125F.
This is only a temporary workaround and the unit should be either replaced or the thermistor serviced.
@@divisivedevice4031 so a $15 fix. Got it.
@@divisivedevice4031 well so far that seems to have fixed the issue! It came out to about $50 w/1-day shipping. Easy plug-n-play style connections.
THANK YOU again for being the only person in the world that was able to give me an answer to my problem!
@@justinwnichols03 Happy to help.
E4? I'm sure with losing 2 cars to repair costs it's something major and I may as well just dig a hole and build a fire
with 120 volts you will have a very hard time taking a 30 minute shower. I do agree with you that the efficiency difference between the tank and tankless now a days is much less
120 volt tankless is not strong enough for a shower
Need a fix..
My problem is the instant heating boiler tankless ...
I can't set it in the middle 😩
It's too hott or too cold... no mild water..
When turned the faucet it clicks inside and goes too hot even on only the lowest number 1 heating mode...
What unit do you have need brand model and serial number to see if it's i unit i have knowledge with or if i don't try to point you to someone that does
Yo quiero saber porq dega d calentar y no buelbe acalentar
no se tendria que chequarlo
i was all in until you added up the load from the water heater....in a DC circuit world the total resistance adds up , not with AC.
if you have a 200 amp service and you run 100 amps to a subpanel and then have 60 amp breaker for your water heater: by your example youd only have 40 amps left to run the rest of your house...it doesnt work that way...AC has two phases
the sub panel would be an additional panel which would give you a total of 300 amps not 200 amps. Btw there is either single phase, which is what most everyone has coming into their homes or 3 phase mainly for business but there is no 2 phase wiring.
@@CARLOSSANCHEZ-vz3fp yes including the neutral. At the panel there two incoming with the return neutral... It still doesn't add up. You can't just add up every single breaker and say hey I can only use 100amps cuz my panel is rated at 100amps
I think you should call an electrician to come and tell you what you can do because you are not understanding what I’m trying to tell you. We don’t do electricity but this was done at my house and many houses we have gone to install these by electrician so I know it can be done
@@CARLOSSANCHEZ-vz3fp you just said you don't do electricity : that's all we need to know....
At the panel you have two hots, a neutral and a ground. Each hot is a phase of 120v. I still insist you do not just add to up every breaker at the panel to get your max usable amperage... Have you considered not every breaker isn't used at its full capacity all the time.. I'd suggest looking into how to load balance a load center in your spare time
that is why we always tell the customer to call a licensed electrician because i know a little about electricity and enough to know that a sub panel WILL work but not all the technical aspects of an electrical box
