North Korean defector Ilhyeok Kim addressed the United Nations Security Council to tell his story of forced labour and routine hunger in the winter. North Korea had voiced its opposition on August 15, 2023, to the meeting about its human rights record, accusing the United States of advancing its own agenda by leading the effort.

This is like the world's largest prison
Because it is.
North Korea allows absolutely no freedom of emigration. North Korea's logic has been that there's no reason to leave North Korea.
Are the Taliban a joke?
Keep in mind the vast majority of the world is a terrible place to live. Average North Korean is still better off than a free Somalian, Afghani, Venezuelan etc

NK got nukes and can possibly wipe out Seoul in seconds. A dictatorship like NK may not mind losing half its population, but a democratic nation can't survive such a catastrophe.
This information is like delicacies given the level of secrets North Korean.
Yea because these defectors are being paid to lie about their country so western narrative can reach international minds lol
Mr. Kim, I'm in awe of your bravery. Also, your command of English is excellent. To use English in front of the UN would be difficult even for those of us who grew up speaking it. I hope you keep on speaking to the world about your life.
I was going to say that. I’m from the USA and went to college and he speaks better English than I do 😂
@@TightyWhiteyTrash I've heard that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn & speak as an adult.

It strikes me that to this day the USA still cannot topple the Kim dynasty.
Glad that he speaks out about it
Why only now does he speak?
Could it be because west is nervous at losing African cooperation, and that NK is making moves there?
Why didn't he testify earlier before all this happened?
I wonder why did the American jump the DMZ if what this guy said is true. He is paid to lie.
@@mudshovel290 the knife of propaganda cuts both ways. While the west capitalizes on propaganda of the suffering of North Koreans, western countries must also grapple with their own crimes of theft from Africa.

Yes but think of all the others he knows are suffering and he is helpless to save them.
It is so saddening to hear this. It still exists in this era 😢😢
Do you really believe this guy? In recent news, an American jumped the DMZ to NK. Seems like he said the opposite.
Maybe if American haven't bombed them to stone age maybe they will just say we don't have a enemy and we don't need expensive weapon.
its still been going on for 70 years man. But unfortunately this is not Germany. North Korea saw that happening in '89 (and '90 on German reunification the later collapse of the Soviet Union and communism by-large in '91) and they'll do anything to remain that way.
@@ANKITSHARMA_3no we don’t

They pay them defectors and up the threat on NK. It is all propaganda.
How to actually deal with him, isn't straightforward. If anyone think it is, then this would never had gone on for 70+ years.
Lets consider how would the world think when North Korea collapsed. Well it will not be the same as how German reunification and the collapse of the Soviet Union had brought out
Basically nothing! I don't mind if a traditionally neutral country like Switzerland (and Kim studied there) maintain relations as a go-between, but any democratic government that does is crazy...

Before Kim Il-Sung and Japan, North Korea would have been a decent place. The past 124 years have been harsh to that country
@@shubhnamdeo2865kim il sung actually greatly improved the living standard in north korea after the japanese occupation and american genocide during korean war that killed 1 in 5 people in nk and destroyed all buildings above 2 floors. for a long time nk had a better standard of living than sk, ruled by fascist dictator that massacred tens of thousands civilians that opposed him like during jeju massacre. Sk became richer because they supported us in their war in vietnam, getting a lot of money and expertize from usa to develop their industry to support the war. nk got a big problem when soviet union collapsed, since they couldnt get oil because of western sanctions. the best way to improve lives of people in nk is to lift the sanctions and normalize the relationships, so that they can participate in global economy and spend less money on defenses and more on improving lives of their people
@@mwalter98 But still, even in the 80s, people of Eastern Europe have told stories of North Koreans who came to their countries and took a lot of basic appliances like kettles and cooking pans to North Korea, hinting that even then it failed its people, under Il-Sung. Sounds like something they wrote for him. “Due to my countries poverty” where a normal person would just say I was poor. Especially someone who is in such an insulated environment would not have the perspective on something from the outside world.
It’s always hard to read between the lines of these stunts especially when they get so much attention and rewards for lambasting the enemy.

If you listen to the Joe Rogan podcast episode with Yeonmi Park, someone who escaped the regime at a young age, you will hear the worst of it. Never did I think it was that bad.
North Koreans, a starving people, must have great strength to pull trains like Yeonmi said
North Korea’s government sounds like Russia and China’s government.
Far worse. People can protest in Russia and China, but in North Korea, you can't even address Kim Jong-un without mentioning his post because otherwise u go to jail, where u, your child and grandchild will live. If you go to North Korea's prisons, you go there to live for 3 generations. Your entire family and u go to prison, and only your great grandchildren can breathe air freely.
Russia and China while being cruel dictatorships are 10000000000000000x better than North Korea. At least you can access the internet and download VPNs and live wherever you want to and not worry about food on your plate.
Except China and Russia are authoritarian states. North Korea is more of a totalitarian state. However, I do think China is slowly turning totalitarian than authoritarian since Xi Jinping is in power for more than ten years.
Ah yes the United Nations, à place where people gather round to talk and listen and do absolutely nothing else.
PRC should thanks Deng Xiao Ping.
-1000 social credit. Deng Xiao Ping never existed. Only Xi Jinping. He transformed China in 6 months. Miracle.
Is there somewhere I can watch his speech without the distracting music in the background? I don’t understand why we can’t just have a background of silence when someone is speaking. Ugh.
And such a cheerful melody when he is talking about the horrendous suffering his people go through every day. Messed up.
Don’t forget who sanction whom in the first place.
And some people still believe in China and Russia who can bring a better world? These three countries are like minded.
When I was a kid, I thought that since it was possible for so many countries to break free from USSR and it was possible for Germany to unite, we would see united Korea in no time... I have no hope for that in my lifetime now.
there must be a way to get these stories to the north korean people, or do they know and just dare not react,, the only way to react to this oppression is on mass.

And what will the UN do?
The UN can do nothing because there aren't enough votes to do anything. China and Russia consistently blocks any effort at punishing North Korea. China has been perpetuating the division of Korea as well as its own country.
I don't know. If the UN want to declare war against North Korea. First, they'll have to get the majority approval to expel North Korea from the UN. Second, they need to make plans.
