Man this was a great video. I personally think they're both so different that I wouldn't be able to choose. You have a graspable rail but it has a joint. Lukes rails have a nicer look but the rails wouldn't pass without a secondary graspable. Either way, both are very impressive for 6 hours. Awesome job guys.

Awesome battle between two very skilled carpenters. great way to show off all the different styles of staircases out there. Although, I think Luke had this competition in the bag until the judge asked who built what before deciding on a winner.
I don’t wanna discredit your work at all.. but I’ve gotta be blunt as a common guy.. who just likes a simple well made thing.. Luke’s stairs are so much nicer to me aesthetically.. and as far as the build quality I actually prefer his.. now I’m also super weird when it comes to deck stairs and fences etc idk why but I love seeing the screws with most designs I find it to be more aesthetically pleasing than no show screws.. now that has a lot to do with my adhd the biggest way I keep myself “focused” and calm is hyper fixating on stuff like screws on decks.. but it’s really not just that is just the over all aesthetics I love seeing screws (they must be placed properly though) all and all I genuinely think luke built had the winner.. and in my opinion the railing he did is going to be a lot more sturdy… it will need obvious maintenance but the main frame of the rails is stronger.. also I HATE ALUMINUM RAILS hate em so dog gone much.. but hey what do I know 😂
Well as a common guy that’s your problem. The judge is world class and loves clean. One he hates screws. Two he loves aluminum railing. The problem I see with Lukes stairs -uneven step sizes -screws clearly not lined up in many cases -edges clearly not flush -cut faces showing -poor spray paint job Visually his had more flaws and his work looked a lot worse. While I can see all of this on camera it’s always 10x more apparent in person. Looking at Gord’s it’s a lot harder to find flaws visually. While yes Luke’s stairs were more sturdy they were just too sloppy. Whereas in Gord’s stairs you can find more flaws physically but really only with the glass and side wood. But these are all just our opinions. In my opinion Gord won hands down. If I had a choice on who would build my deck his work is just cleaner.
You guys are both GREAT builders! Well done. Loved so many things about your work AND Luke's. An outstanding job for 6 hours, hell, even most people's 12 hours! Great video!
As a GC, I think a homeowner would like Gord's better, but I think the structural integrity was completely overlooked on Luke.built's stairs. Blocking all around the posts, GRK lags. Luke.built won hands down. Also gotta appreciate Luke for his genuine niceness and large heart. Nice guys might finish last, but he'll get repeat customers

Fantastic episode! I did miss the the extra heavy rock music from the other episodes but a full hour to enjoy some very raw, down in the trenches style, actual carpentry was a total treat. Even if HGTV or whatever tried to produce a show like this, they’d skip over all the hard work, math, and frustration and just talk the drama, sad backstories, and final results. Something I’ve noticed from these episodes so far, is those little snubby M12’s wind up being an MVP, but I’ll admit it was refreshing to see it struggle a bit Extremely happy with the results of both, and watching the story unfold on each. I don’t even know which one I’d pick… but being a sucker for black and glass, I’d go with Gord’s as well What can I say? I’m psyched for the next episode whenever that’ll be!
I loved the long video format. It was to the point and 100% engaging all the way through! I liked both stairs! I agree with the comments on Luke's handrails and if the stairs had been the dark color and risers light color. This probably would have better hidden the screws too. Overall, I think yours was a better fit and trim, but if I had to choose between them, I'd go with Luke because the glass was a complete turn off to me for several reasons....I appreciate the craftsmanship, just the product would not be a good choice for 98% of homes for an outdoor step application. I think the ultimate deck would be your stairs, but with Luke's railing with a better handrail design.

Man, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, got really into the builds, both awesome work in 6 hours! But I do like well placed screws, must be perfectly in line of course and I hate aluminium railing…. So for me and what I like, Luke won, but I kinda liked your stone idea, that could fit nicely into a stone garden. I do liked the two judges better last time, gets out of the personal liking a bit more. Incredible work, bet I could beat you if I was 10 years younger 😂
Aesthetically, Luke made a more appealing staircase. Bully's stairs were more.... commercial in my opinion. Luke's were a bit more on the "upper-middle class residential private home" look. There are areas on the handrail I'd change. I'm fine with the waterfall, but start at the bottom overlap your previous board with the next. Overlapping your railing helps move water away from the framing, and miters meeting up at rail surface transitions will slowly open and pose a high risk of splintering, especially into the hands of people using the railing. They're using composite, so thats not as big of a deal, but there are areas where a person's hand can encounter relatively sharp angles. Guaranteed, a week after install, my wife will have found every sharp corner and angle on that deck and also gotten a bruise or splinter from running into it. You can attain similar aesthetics while still maximizing safety and water run off. I've only build a few decks in my days in construction, I was mostly on windows, doors, and siding, but I've found that you should never underestimate the ability of water, the customer, or my wife to get somewhere they shouldn't and damage something or themselves. Either way, great builds, great video, i get that a time hack threw careful designing out the window, but I think both Luke and Buply learned a few things about where they need to revisit their base habits so when they encounter a tight time frame in the wild, their instincts will yield better results
I’m a real simple man and the all wood construction was really nice to me. However I could see if I was a little richer with a house made of stone the glass and stone stair case would fit perfectly. Personally I would choose the all wood construction because I live in a wood house in the country. All of that being said I feel like they’re two completely different styles and it’s heavily dependent on the building they’re being installed in. Good job on both

Little Tid bit for you, you can use a leaver board or leaver and fulcrum also to lift your stringers up and it will reduce the force needed to lift that up by a LOT. Makes things much easier. 👍

I picked lukes but i think its nore of a style that i like. Not so much i think his is better. Bullys i would have liked more but the side of the stairs killed me how it looked black white black white. I know its 6 hours and thats really hard to do but i wish that the outside had a black boarder to make it look like the stringers dies off into something. Thats the only thing about bullys that got me but i mean both of them for 6 hours is great work
Can someone explain why he made them show him which one they built lol makes it seem like he wanted to know so he can pick the guy thats paying him. I liked Luke's . Simple and to me looked nice. I dont like the glass or the rock look. If Luke's railing was not as wide so my hand can grab it more comfortably it wouldve been much better.
The most real part of this is him getting like 75% of the way in only to learn the vendor sent him the wrong color part for a bit of it lol Felt that in my soul
I would gladly offer up my back yard so none of your vs. materials go to waste… lol! I just can’t physically do the lifting and bending over, well that and I have a very fixed income and can’t afford it.. nice work and best of luck for your future projects.

Great episode- my two suggestions are to change the soundtrack a few times through out it was the same loop over and over. And add a half time break where you guys chit chat talk trash mid way critique and brainstorm. It gets long winded needs a little break of the hi speed building/anxiety lol. I loved it though.

I like lukes design more, but mostly for the color lay out and rails. I like the stones and draping. Neat concept. As far as other competitions, I don’t know if it would be in your realm but you could maybe do patio furniture builds. Unless you’re specifically trying to do more large scale builds.
Quick tip bully. Put your 3rd stringer underneath your first traced pattern. Screw or clamp them together and cut through both. Then you repeat and no longer need to mark with a pencil again. Just screw/clamp together and cut then follow cut line.
Tools getting jammed OR sharing batteries without them issues id say both are sellable and very profitable for 12H. What i thought would be helpful to include materials used/available and maybe show some of their planning. Very important for more understanding.
I'm not sure who I think actually won that one. On video they look like a tie. If Wood Bully would have had the proper parts for railing I think he would have been the clear winner. This series is excellent. One thing I would like to say is please allow help when lifting heavy loads. I am not a stickler for safety, but after a decade of back pain and currently out of work for 6 weeks because I had surgery on 2 herniations in my L3-L4 disk I have become very strict on myself and my guys at work when it comes to lifting loads. Having the show come out ever so slightly better by having to improvise is not worth getting someone hurt. As an electrician and maintenance team leader I understand that everyone is going to lift loads that are too heavy alone and have improper lifting techniques, but any time it can be prevented is worth it. I am a tough guy with an extremely high pain tolerance, but laying in the floor with your back and leg muscles spasming and having legs that a too weak to hold you body weight from sciatic nerve issues will slap you in the face with a huge wake up call. Please do what you can to keep yourself and guests from ever having to deal with anything like that. It doesn't always happen instantly but just 1 improper lift that is too heavy can have effects years from now. Otherwise great episode.

Just finished the end of the vid. Agree on the face screws but to be fair theres no time for hidden fasteners in 6hrs. Also, the simple math comment seemed to show he doesn't really know the deductions for bottom riser are not actually easy to do correctly, nor does he know the flat handrail isn't to code anywhere in the US on a staircase of that size, shouldn't even have had to think on that one as a designer of decks with guard rail details built into the plans. Compounded is the attire, a designer without build experience's get up. We need Dr. Decks for these competitions guys!
I think Luke’s are better for a deck. The way you trimmed out each step is really ugly to me. Just cut skirt board and if it’s interior miter into the risers. Exterior do like Luke and butt your boards into the skirt. The exposed stringers not matching just ruins it.
1st mode on an impact driver gives you less torque. its not a drill, youre not changing gears. The flywheel in the driver is actually just spinning slower, thus making less power
People saying Luke’s is better do not understand attention to detail! To say you like the design better is one thing but to say it is overall better, no sir.
I think lukes staircase looks better and its a better design for the most of the population if you hide the screws its a 9 out of 10 work... i differed from the judges opinion and i think that wood bully knew who the judge was going to be so he designed his staircase so he would like it more idk if luke knew too but if he knew he should have take the same path as the bully
I feel like that judge made his decisions based entirely on his personal (very opinionated) subjective tastes. I'm not weighing in on who I thought should win. I only say that based on the comments the judge kept making. He could not get over a few points of his personal preference.
I didnt like either handrail..for the glass one i think another post os required to looks good. I like aluminum rails..not a fan for glassm.i think wide pickets would look better. I disnt like the width of Lukes rail..wouldnt pass here in Ontario. And using composite for a waterfall was a horrible idea..one season and those miters would open right up. I think the waterfall if you are going to do it..should goto the ground. I am not a fan of dark color treads..they show the dirt and are invisible in low light. I think you both where hustling your asses to get it done. Thats alot of work to do in 6 hours. Also i found the "supply chain” issues hikarious and perfect real world example. Keep up the good work! Look forward to the next challenge video.
Luke had a decent idea aesthetically. Just needed to get his angle repetiore up to par. His 45 outsidr bevel was fine, the short point just needed to come up at or above the post. The flat piece to stair cap bevels need to be the same angle so the length of the miters are the same and can flush up on both sides, else you have to fight it a bit and run one past the other and vise versa into that one, opposite of miter methodology and more a cope.
Safety equipment would be good in these videos. Some need eye protection (you only have two), some need hearing protection, and in this case, dust protection. This wood and its substitutes can be harmful to your lungs.
Amazing talent, honestly such good work, but I have to say, I get so frustrated at inches and fractions. I don’t get why you guys make life so difficult. (Examples) Finding the centre on a 11 and 1/8 (not sure if I used your system correct but it’s along those lines) Compared to say the centre of. 1350mm. Can have a mini calculater in pocket and divide any length of MM to whatever you need In a second.

What i thought would be helpful to include materials used/available and maybe show some of their planning. Very important for more understanding.
I'm not sure who I think actually won that one. On video they look like a tie. If Wood Bully would have had the proper parts for railing I think he would have been the clear winner. This series is excellent.
One thing I would like to say is please allow help when lifting heavy loads. I am not a stickler for safety, but after a decade of back pain and currently out of work for 6 weeks because I had surgery on 2 herniations in my L3-L4 disk I have become very strict on myself and my guys at work when it comes to lifting loads. Having the show come out ever so slightly better by having to improvise is not worth getting someone hurt. As an electrician and maintenance team leader I understand that everyone is going to lift loads that are too heavy alone and have improper lifting techniques, but any time it can be prevented is worth it. I am a tough guy with an extremely high pain tolerance, but laying in the floor with your back and leg muscles spasming and having legs that a too weak to hold you body weight from sciatic nerve issues will slap you in the face with a huge wake up call. Please do what you can to keep yourself and guests from ever having to deal with anything like that. It doesn't always happen instantly but just 1 improper lift that is too heavy can have effects years from now. Otherwise great episode.

I love these episodes! I would love to do this but I think I would most likely lose. Ive only got about 5 years experience. It would be fun though.

Just finished the end of the vid. Agree on the face screws but to be fair theres no time for hidden fasteners in 6hrs. Also, the simple math comment seemed to show he doesn't really know the deductions for bottom riser are not actually easy to do correctly, nor does he know the flat handrail isn't to code anywhere in the US on a staircase of that size, shouldn't even have had to think on that one as a designer of decks with guard rail details built into the plans. Compounded is the attire, a designer without build experience's get up. We need Dr. Decks for these competitions guys!
I think Luke’s are better for a deck. The way you trimmed out each step is really ugly to me. Just cut skirt board and if it’s interior miter into the risers. Exterior do like Luke and butt your boards into the skirt. The exposed stringers not matching just ruins it.
Me and the judge disagree. Believe me we left out alot of the issues but his would not have passed code. He was a very sore loser as well.
I’ve seen so many issues with the trex skirt boards applied to the stairs like that.
1st mode on an impact driver gives you less torque. its not a drill, youre not changing gears. The flywheel in the driver is actually just spinning slower, thus making less power

I think lukes staircase looks better and its a better design for the most of the population if you hide the screws its a 9 out of 10 work... i differed from the judges opinion and i think that wood bully knew who the judge was going to be so he designed his staircase so he would like it more idk if luke knew too but if he knew he should have take the same path as the bully

I feel like that judge made his decisions based entirely on his personal (very opinionated) subjective tastes. I'm not weighing in on who I thought should win. I only say that based on the comments the judge kept making. He could not get over a few points of his personal preference.

I didnt like either handrail..for the glass one i think another post os required to looks good. I like aluminum rails..not a fan for glassm.i think wide pickets would look better.
I disnt like the width of Lukes rail..wouldnt pass here in Ontario. And using composite for a waterfall was a horrible idea..one season and those miters would open right up. I think the waterfall if you are going to do it..should goto the ground.
I am not a fan of dark color treads..they show the dirt and are invisible in low light.
I think you both where hustling your asses to get it done. Thats alot of work to do in 6 hours.
Also i found the "supply chain” issues hikarious and perfect real world example.

Luke had a decent idea aesthetically. Just needed to get his angle repetiore up to par. His 45 outsidr bevel was fine, the short point just needed to come up at or above the post. The flat piece to stair cap bevels need to be the same angle so the length of the miters are the same and can flush up on both sides, else you have to fight it a bit and run one past the other and vise versa into that one, opposite of miter methodology and more a cope.

Safety equipment would be good in these videos. Some need eye protection (you only have two), some need hearing protection, and in this case, dust protection. This wood and its substitutes can be harmful to your lungs.
Respirators, ear plugs and eye protection are available. Most guys just don’t wear them. 🤷♂️

Yes. He was also given time to design and submit a list of products he would like to use that I had my team purchase for him.

Compared to say the centre of. 1350mm. Can have a mini calculater in pocket and divide any length of MM to whatever you need In a second.
