    Probably the best tutorial on mics, cables & connectors I've come across! I wish I'd seen it a year ago. I bought a purplepanda last year and it really is the most economical solution for good sound quality. I've since bought a Fulaim X5 dual wireless lav which is great but £100 compared to £20 for the PurplePanda.
    Thank you.
    Just watched again. Crystal clear, unambiguous info! Blessings.

    What I'd like to understand now is how to send the audio from a external gear like a synth to mobile and record that audio and video with the phone. Anyone knows? Thank you!

    Bill.... your video was the best video ever regarding how to hook up an external mic to a IPhone [14 Pro Max]. I used your instructions and still could not get the sound on the video with the iPhone app and even another photo app on my phone. Then, after almost going nuts... I figured out the to hear the sound replayed on the video just shot.... I had to detach the mic cords from the iPhone. The videos all had sound.... the phone would not let me hear it while plugged into the mic. I looked for additional IPhone setting to fix that... but could not fine any. Maybe this needs to be mentioned on a video to finally get the mic to work with an iPhone? Still... great job kinda....

      Nigel:
      Not sure if this will work 100% look at amzon link below ( but it says it should )
      www.amazon.com/Lightning-Headphone-Converter-Compatible-iPad-iOS14/dp/B08MXXL5SZ?crid=2OKZSFIZCSQOG&keywords=apple+splitter+cable&qid=1642809891&sprefix=apple+splitter+cable,aps,171&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzT09UM1o1TlNQOEZTJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTcwOTk2MjhNTU01NlhDQThVNCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTczMjQ4MkxXOElHM1hYUEdGMCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU%3D&linkCode=sl1&tag=ashleyjonas0c-20&linkId=751daaabe15bbd19b30932769247290c&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
      1. Connect this adapter to the iphone
      2. With 1 input attach power cable ( normal iPhone charger)
      3 on the other input connect the lightning to 3.5 TRRS mic input
      as in my video 03:50
      Good luck!
      At least if you get it from amazon and it doesn't work you can return it.
      If you get errors with the adapter . You will have to get the same one off the official apple site .
      As apple runs a scan of cables and some 3rd party cable wont run. FYI
      Apple site : you can chat to them or go in to ask at one of their stores
      www.apple.com/shop/product/HKKP2ZM/A/belkin-lightning-audio-charge-rockstar?fnode=3ca14d6587751c367d91de3c273a0d11c01eaf752996ff8e2068d2d8835890cbdcb157523adb14e4212a3b59c5a16cbae33f56a0f7fb370a052c7dd7749d9bbe6337ddda2980d2f72b11d588294e5a7764ef4051f5672d479c9327af0e545a4b

    Have a question. I have an iPhone 14 with a lightning port adapter connected to a 35mm adapter Lavalier mic. For some reason the iPhone will not recognize the external Lavalier mic. It only recognizes the internal mic.
    I know both the Lavalier and the lightning port adapter work. If I take the lightning port adapter and connect it to wired headphones, it works fine. Any help with this is appreciated. Thank you for your great video.

    • @billbuckleytutorials
      @billbuckleytutorials  10 месяцев назад

      There can be 2 issues.
      1. The lightning adapter MUST be from Apple. I have tried all sorts of 3rd party adapters and Apple have built in checks for apple certified. For example I had an adapter that worked on an iPhone 11 but would NOT work on Iphone 13 pro.
      2. Make sure that your Lav mic is TRRS type ( 3 black rings ) if it only has 2 it does not see the mic. see 5:36 in above video.
      These would be the main 2 issues as far as I can see. ... Good luck!

      Tap "Settings" and "Sounds" on your iPhone.
      Slide the "Change With Buttons" slider to the "On" position.
      Press the "+" button on the side of the iPhone to increase the overall system volume. Press the "-" button to lower the volume. This affects the volume of the microphone as well.

    Greetings Bill, Good Day, I am Lyall, Thank you for an informative video above, Can you please help me perhaps, I am shooting on a iPhone 13 Pro Max, External Mic S20 & Filmic Pro V7, I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I am currently receiving cleaner audio from the built in Audio front mic from the iPhone 13 than I am from S20. I assume I am doing something wrong but I can't figure it out. I am recording in a really quiet room and there is a consistent loud white noise in the background of every test video currently. The mic also has a rabbit foot on. I have tried to adjust gain control manual. A bit at a loss. Thank you for your time, if you can help. Sincerely LG.

    • @billbuckleytutorials
      @billbuckleytutorials  Год назад

      Lyal l : it sounds like the iPhone/Filmic is not seeing your external mic.
      1. You MUST use an apple adapter ( I have tried cheaper ones off amazon and they have not worked.) so you need to order one from Apple
      on APple site site search for "Lightning to headphone jack" $8.00
      www.apple.com/us/search/lightning-to-headphone-jack?src=serp
      2. Your mic must be a 3 ring type connector ( TRRS) . The 2 black rings don't work with the iPhone. ( so your issue might be the cable. Normally 2 ring side from your mic output to "3 rings" going into the lightning phone adapter " is a MUST
      3. in Filmic . When you plug your mic in the audio bars should switch to EXT at the bottom on the audio bars
      4. If you tap on the mic icon on top of the audio bars , this will bring up the Audio QAM ( menu ) on the bottom and it should say "Headset microphone"
      If it says "bottom/or front, or stereo" the phone/ App is NOt seeing the external mic
      There is a very nice external mic called the Purple panda . It comes will all sorts of connectors for iphone/GoPro etc about $25
      I know this one works with iPhone 13 and Filmic V7 for sure
      amazon link
      www.amazon.com/Purple-Panda-Smartphone-Lavalier-Microphone/dp/B08PSKHPBV/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1VG7FM0UWX0VA&keywords=purple+panda&qid=1679685271&sprefix=purple+panda+%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-6
      Good luck!

    Great video, I connected my two ring to mic and 3 ring to adapter, for some reason both the bottom mic and rode mic is still hot. Plus where it says what mic is active mine doesn't change to headset microphone. Was wondering if you or someone had any suggestions to correct this? I'm using the iPhone 12max pro.

    • @billbuckleytutorials
      @billbuckleytutorials  Год назад +1

      It's one of 2 things
      1. The TRS ( 2 ring) to TRRS ( 3 ring ) cable is bad
      2. Or more likely The iPhone adapter ( lightning to TRRS (/3 ring ) cable is NOT working. This is especially true if you got the adapter from a third party ( like off amazon)
      I have had issues in the past and I had to order an adapter direct from an Apple store. They cost more but they are more reliable.
      Cheers Bill
