I can see this was a lot of back and forth setting up cameras to catch all this. Plus, you show us the mishaps, like your GoPro getting run over. You did a good job of all this editing, as well, to keep this almost 79 year old lady entertained. When I see you posted one of these kinds of videos, I get my popcorn ready and stop doing everything else and sit back as you say and ENJOY!! A JOB WELL DONE on this video. Wish I could give more thumbs up. Love you, Brother. Keep em coming!!

I live in Southwest Arizona. As you well know, out here we're most likely to get in a dicey situation climbing a steep, narrow, rocky trail or crossing a long stretch of deep flour sand. The key to making it through deep sand is NEVER, EVER STOP!!! A set of Max-Trax boards has saved my butt a time or two on rocky terrain just by providing a surface for the tire to grab onto. I have been in several situations where I would have used the winch if I could have, but there was nothing to anchor the cable to! No boulders small enough to get the cable around yet heavier than the truck, and no vegitation larger than a small yucca. I wish somebody would invent a device stout enough to serve as an anchor that would somehow bury itself in the ground [and extricate itself when you're done]. That person would make a fortune selling such a device!

Agreed 💯 having a winch. The amount of times I've pulled people out of mud pits, sand, grass slides...you name it. The winch is an absolute lifesaver. I have a 2005 Hilux, 4 inch lift and 850 kg winch. In fact, include ride on mowers, moving large trampolines… the uses are endless. Winches are awesome👍

Spot on! Black Bear Pass was not yet officially opened back in Aug 2023, and some idiot decided to do it, and got himself in trouble, needing to be winched. The Sheriff shut it down for the season. Not sure if it'll open this year, but once it's open, I'm heading back to try to do it.

I've been hunting off roading and camping my entire life. Been stranded 7 times. One mechanical failure I didn't have the parts to fix and all others stuck. Every vehicle I own now has a winch it's the first thing I do. Also helped lots of others stuck. If your rig can handle the weight i would recommend steel cable though. Ive had both and synthetic isn't as reliable or durable. Ive had both and also work in industrial plant using cranes tuggers snatch blocks nylon and wire rigging and though wire is heavier and more aggravating to handle it stands up to way more stress sun chemicals etc.

Great video. I’ve been off-roading since 1997 and I agree one of the first things that needs to go in a rig is a winch. Not only will it get you out of a bind but can be used to prevent damage to a vehicle or add safety in certain situations especially with a heavy overland vehicle loaded for a long trip. A winch is a good insurance policy and it’s ignorant for anyone to say you don’t need a winch. Keep up the good work

No, you don't need a winch, all I have is a Big Foot whistle and a buba rope and any time I get stuck all I do is blow the whistle and anywhere between fifteen minutes to a day and a half a Big Foot or two will show up and pull me out and if trees are a problem they just rip them out of the ground like weeds out of a garden. Winch my ass, Big Foot does it better. Nice video by the way, appreciate all the hard work you do making them, thanks again Richie!

Even in Western Australia where it's mainly sand you are driving thru, I'd have a winch and a sand anchor, failing a sand anchor, wrap your winching cable around a Max Trax then bury your Trax about 6 feet down in the sand, set it as a (T) against the wall of the sand pit, refill the hole and pull yourself out slowly. Only a noob, does not have a winch on their 4x4.

And as far as winches go, compare the price of a winch to the price of having someone to come pull you out. You might be able to find somebody that'll do it for nothing but there are places that have people that do recoveries and they be the only ones you can get if you can get them. It's all on how you look at it the way I look at it. It's better safe than sorry. Put a winch on your vehicle

💯 Need a winch no matter what. ESPECIALLY if you solo overland with a heavy rig that is very capable - such as equipped with diff locks
Why?? Because it is that very capability which can take one into remote places where, should traction and the lockers become unable to get you out, there is very little hope of anything other than a winch to recover yourself.
There are exceptions too of course, like if you're never solo on a trip and run with other rigs that have a winch. Or you run open diffs where the vehicle wouldn't get you too far out anyway.
Not a particular Warn guy, but agree a winch is not something to skimp on.
Red winches are badass w/o a doubt. Would run one if I could afford it, or used it in some commercial capacity.
Also not a twine guy either. Prefer steel cable, but that's personal choice as well. For all the pros to twine they outweighed by the fact it is a consumable. You never know when it will break (and it will). And if the full weight of your ass is on that line, it could turn the minor inconvenience of winching into a total vehicle loss. Or worse, harm you or someone else.
At any rate, great video and great info.
    Cheers!
