The Forester STi Type-M was the Last Great Subaru Wagon

- Hey guys! Today is a great day taking this beautiful Subaru Forester Type-M 5-speed manual out for a drive on some back roads. Not only have I driven a Forester STi before, we owned one as a camera vehicle and road trip missile here at Roads Untraveled for about 6 months. Even with the automatic transmission, that car impressed me every time I took it for a drive, so i'm thinking the addition of a manual transmission could only make the car more fun to drive. Enjoy!

Apologies for the audio distortion at high RPMs, hope you guys enjoy this one :D
Looks like you just became the new "The Smoking Tire" keep up the good work.
And please don't start talking about watches.
Roads Untraveled miss these kind of wagons
marcus.... show me that r34 you mentioned at 6:10... and what about those 3 r34's imported by your friend?
As do I. Here in the North American market, they're almost non-existent.
2002 JDM Sti sportwagon buddy
The first 2 generations of forester sti (and first 2 generations of wrx sti) are my favorite. Feels almost the same as a wrx sti but more practical
AKA the comfortable wagon that can embarrass some pretty expensive sports cars.
dude yes i have a very similar car, a 2004 forrester XT (sti turbo) and nobody expects that turbo to kick in lmao. Drives amazing this dudes assessment of the car is very accurate
And very strong. My uncle crash with that model. He fall from big hill. That car saved 4 guy that day. Everyone sayed it was imposible that car didnot explode.
@@ni9ecompany830 That's just what movies make you think
"reliability is an option.. ...I guess.."
-Subaru Boxer Engines
It was only the 2.5s during the 00s that were a bit flaky. The early and later 2.0s are good.
The non-turbo boxers are especially reliable. You can put 100000s miles on them without really needing to do much at all to them.
Same here, 1998 Forester, starts at the first turn of the key, runs like a charm. It is a pure beast in the snow.
I have a impreza sport wagon wrx from Japan and it has 200,000 miles and has a lot of mods still on stock block with a set of type ra heads vf38 turbo and more it hasn't skiped a beat still like new
91 legacy wagon original engine was getting a bit tired at 220,000 so I took it out and replaced it, but it still ran ok. Been a great car, wish I could say the same about some of the so called mechanics who have been tasked with helping to keep it running. My 2009 WRX is getting some love right now, new gauges, but its as fast as any sane person needs on the street. Its low miles so far...52000. Been a good car, but moderately expensive to maintain. Still, it gives more smiles per mile than any car I have ever owned.
🤣🤣🤣
I have had one here in south Africa as a third and sometimes fourth car for 4 years now. It will sometimes sit in the garage forv6 months . Yet all I do is put a new battery in and it has never let me down. Its fun to drive. By modern standards not crazy fast but its got tons of torque. My son and I have done surf trips to j bay and the transkei several times and it been a pleasure. Kind of like a family member now.
Love Subaru and boxer engine sound. Can sleep with this sound. Thanks for sharing this video😎😎
I'm obsessed to this sound.
3:03 casual Tie Fighter passing by, lol
I have a legacy wagon with the 2.2 (EJ22) in it with a 5 speed manual. It’s a great Wagon!
Kinda missed my 2004 Forester 2.0 XT as well. The turbo 2l boxer engine runs like a champ with the ECU tune, cat back exhaust, K & N drop in filter, STi intercooler and WRX factory turbo producing 270 bhp but the the 4 speed autobox died at 100000 km. And the repairs is going to cost me a lot. So i need to scrap the car for the smaller Subaru Crosstrek.
It common to see STi Foresters look alike. But the gearbox will be the limiting factor for engine power.
The latter models later came with the 6 speed manual taken from the STi except the DCCD is missing.
It common to have gearbox conversion done from the 4 speed auto to the 5 speed or 6 speed. The coilover upgrades will make the car to hug the corners and STi Brembo brakes upgrades.
It a great daddy car to commute and carry stuffs in the back. And the family can still take a long ride because the back seats is so spacious.
Great review.
Most of the STi or WRX parts can be swapped to the Forester since they are interchangable.
Scrap! For a transmission fuck dude
update - spun rod bearing racing audi`s = brought a ej207 sti RA spec C short block with custom heads s/steel valves upgraded springs and viton seals , 11mm oil pump and iag alloy sump kit ! 260 hp TD04 turbo 3 inch exhaust ,440 cc injectors new STI coil packs , un-catted up pipe ! - love to rewatch this video , my mod`s bringing the car to track day`s with the subaru car club .
"Oh that is a nice ass R34 sitting in a field" - Said while driving a Forester STi Type-M
Just Alberta Things
mine is currently being imported, I keep coming back to this video because i can not wait. :)
So lucky to have them here in Australia but they are too expensive and bloody rare
Awesome video, your original Forester video helped me make the decision to import mine and I love it.
Just sold my black type M yesterday. Good years with that beast.
Just bought a black type M two weeks ago. You dont live in NZ do you?
Big Dic Daddy that you Nathan??
Unholy Kralos haha totally is buddy!
Big Dic Daddy maaaaaaaate!!!

Late 90s JDM cars are the best drivers cars. They were simple, lightweight, powerful at the time, and very driver friendly. Unlike today's bloated but overpowered muscle cars that gets exposed on hairpins and turns by lightweights. I was on a Charger on the highway and my friend was embarrassed by a late 90s mazda Rx7 on the highway. That thing clawed the curves like it was on rails. Same thing for any JDM pocket rocket with the right mods it would wax a lot of fat pig muscle cars.
dont forget about the legacy gt wagons or the jdm legacy sti s402
Legacy is better
Always thought the turbo subaru wagons were so cool. Might pick one up one day.
SUV*
Team Subaru all the way.. That's one super car.. Love the take off
What a lovely foz! And that sound = pure awesomeness!
Thanks for posting. I had a gen 1 Forester (pre face lift) S turbo. 177bhp fom a TD035 turbo. But this white one with full bodykit which I believed was called a type A? Looks amazing. I'm lucky enough to have a 2nd gen Forester Sti but still prefer the look of this one! Greeting from the UK.
The forester STi 2005 is my favorite!
Buying one of these in 2 days in black. Great video
Thanks! It won't disappoint.
Such a sick car jealous we don't get these in the States
Have you guys forgoten the 2006 legacy 3.0r wagon with a 6 speed manual and awd? That engine sounded heavenly at high rpm and it was pretty quick too
Love it! Good video as always. Bring more forester content!! :)
Remembered once my dad had this beast when i was little 🔥
"16 kilometers per hour". hehe
Love your videos man! I'm in the lower mainland as well and it's cool to see these awesome cars ripping around in my own backyard!
i got an 04 STI sg9 2.5L 6spd manual as my daily. i get to drive amg's, v12 bmw's, aston martins, range rover sports etc for work, and nothing compares to the thrill of the sg9. has 226,000 km on the clock and haven't had an engine failure yet, just a few oil leaks that i easily fixed. looking forward to rebuilding the engine with forged internals when it does finally let go
Next sti i buy is the same model as yours :)
I think the best wagons are the 4th gen Legacy GT Touring Wagon. The JDM ones, of course. Hardly any videos of them on RUclips.
I wish someone would bring an evo wagon and get it reviewed. That's my top wagon. Great car.
Zap Rowsdower212 It sure is a very very nice car 👍🏻
I have seen too many crown royal shift boots installed in people's rides. Classic suede black with red or even blue stitching would look so good.
Do you drive an AE86 by any chance? :)
@Road untravelled that Subaru sounds dope
Wow so wrong actually the 2.5l sg9 2004-2007 run forester sti with 6speed and brembo goodness was subarus last great wagon
I daily a '07 XT and love the thing. Even handicapped by the slowest, dumbest slushbox ever made, it's a ton of fun on back roads.
Miran Sidoine true....
Wish we got SG9 in the USA - but my 05 SG6 XT is great too
Sam Cyanide my 04 XT is an Sg9......
+justin mallari yeah the USDM one are SG6, other market is SG9 and have XTi
I got 2 Forester X 2008 so proud of they. we love our babies
SF5 typeMに日本で乗ってます!
とても良い車です!
Love this! More wagons please :)
Used to like my old 2011 Forester XT would happily do 140mph on any surface until one day at a junction.... Started revving to redline on its own, then limp home mode then dead 😂
Sell it to me
awesome.....the mighty SF.
Subis owned the late 90s early 00s what a car
God that thing is beautiful ❤
Thank you I'm actually in the process of lifting it and doing all the appropriate mods to make it a lifted show machine
7:02 "not too obnoxious..." * POP *. loool
awesome to see a local car on here!
Lovely clean car. Can you not import the last version forester sti with the 2.5 and 6 speed to Canada? They map to well over 300bhp with basic mods. Much better than the sf5.
Not at the moment, we'll be able to import them in 2 years from now.
The 2004 Forester Sti wasn't that bad either....
BigBadAssViking hate the tail lights though look like elf ears
yeah the rear end got worse, but the front looks much better imo
Robert Weatherall I'll stick with my box front ends functional air ducts to cool my 4 pot STI brakes :)
Agree
@@patricktondu5366 DUDE THIS! i had a ej207 and a full 2005 USDM 6 speed swap brakes axles etc.... could of put it into a 2003+ since its bolts right in... NAW went with a Gc8
i have a gold gt turbo auto = top fast small modifications but wow = I love it !
So tempted to buy one of these
You should have
I love my MY00 sf5 GT. Does everything a wrx can do and more
Saw this Vid and went ahead to get myself one. So cool.
This car is a beauty ! It sounds so nice👌 I have the same car but auto and it's a 2000 and it's white too. I wish mine was manual.
Just get a manual swap!
Nate I have thought about it!
I get to see this Fozzy every week at the local meet in Kelowna such a sweet car.
About to buy a type m. Anyone know the difference between this and a standard forester sti?
Great review and amazing car. How cars should be!
You know someone is a real car guy if they drive right hand drive without hesitation
Last great wagon. Period. 🔰
5th gen legacy touring 3.6r are pretty nice too
Funny driver on the right side of the road ,and seating driving on the right side no often we see that in the us .
Thanks for the video. Love that car.How does the fuel consumption compare with the previous STi you reviewed? As well as other turbo foresters.
fuck so rare; 800 made
They don't make 250hp, that's only on 100RON. Foresters run aggressive timing which makes them almost untunable in terms of stock ECU. But then again these ones have the STi ecu which makes about 10-15 more than S/TB and have upgraded suspension, 4 pot brakes and the body kit is sooo rare.
All of that is very accurate super easy to flash the ECU and do upgrades
best seats ever.
If you're ever coming to Finland I'll let you drive my single turbo B4 RSK which is actually getting a DCCD and a plated R180 diff from an RA this year!! Currently running a VF35 @1.2bar with the stock ECU but I'm going bigger after I get standalone ECU!
I have number 556/800 and drive it daily. Glad I found thss video. Relatively unknown car
Personally I think the 2nd gen forester and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen legacy were better in looks at the least
when subaru made cars.
Now they’re going for easily 20k plus for an sti grade four
Always wish they brought the forester STi to the states
Saw you at Benkei ramen the other day lol :) and your MR2
That thing looks awesome! I still love my 05 XT though :)
Boi, u done triggered Marty with that title
I drive one and loving it
i n you have a type M?
Love the video, I’m in the Okanagan as well. Review my wide body RSTI when it’s done this summer?
I live im alberta aswell and have seen this thing ripping around and it sounds soo rad
Was it in Edmonton?
i believe so
Saw a blue one in angus ontario just a week ago!
TYPE 2 MS DONT COME IN BLUE STANDARD THERE WAS ONLY 3 COLOR OPTIONS.... WHITE ...BLACK .... SILVER
That's auto I've met the owner before at a meet by Georgian College a month or so back. he's local in Barrie.
MC Photography cool, I'm from Barrie, I have a black 240sx hbu?
THEONE2F3AR I have a RHD Subaru Legacy GTB E-Tune wagon I go to Georgian.
MC Photography nice, I go to lakehead, sadly my car is in storage rn :(
External wastegate? Or do you have a mic on the exhaust?
personally I'd leave it stock ride height but to each their own. I kind of wanna buy one as a daily when I get the money. I think I'd probably go with the Legacy GT or outback 2.5 XT though, just more comfortable.
Hey just found your channel. And I also live in vancouver but in the city. I love this car but not sure if I should get an automatic or stick.
What do you recommend?
Stick
my 2.5l vf39 at 16psi 04 forester , get 28mpg highway, how is that bad fuel economy?
I don't know why people talk about Subaru and reliability issues (older Subarus) when you rip on a car every day of your life of owning it with no maintenance lol it's going to blow up or break just like any other car .
I love the Forester STi
I was bidding on this but didnt win and i recall it was a great buy by the buyer! All the sti type M were sold new in japan. However a lot have been exported to uk and aussie as u said.
Ricky Ho
Very few Type M made it into australia. There is only one publicly known in the Subaru circles here in the whole country. And another few re-shells and/or body kit conversions kicking about.
New Zealand would have heaps though. They have alot more relaxed regulations around importing used vehicles from Japan.
One was imported into Australia. The video is wrong!
I would love one so much but I got burned so badly by the SG9 I just cant bring myself to do it. Running costs are abysmal.
Why does this remind me of a Nissan pulsar GTI-R?
Hectreez Zeroing its because of the hood
2006-2007 WRX wagon was the last good wagon they made ;)
In fact it's the last fast wagon they ever made.
Good_Lord I can speak for that, my daily is an 06 wagon, really wicked daily drivers. They are also true wagons, not SUV's
I love my wagon :) I'm happy I found it.
I miss my bugeye wagon. It wasn't a 2.5 but it was still awesome.
Gotta love GG wagons, they just feel right ! I've had mine for close to 3 years now and I love it
The gc8 version style is the faster wagon 97-00, way lighter there is 650-800whp ones in Australia,
Almost sounds like it has a Genome Axle back.
Wmdbro that's what was on before i did the muffler delete
I prefer the first gen turbo to any other gen Forester.
I love this car!
Hi love the video!!!! I'm planning on importing a sti forester , my question is how hard is is to pass a bc safety inspection?
I need it. I need it right now.
I need to own an STI one day
Sounds great.
now there's a familiar vehicle
the dream subaru
Almost got one but instead for my beautiful GC8 :)
I love it.......STI awesome.....
Unpopular opinion but fact is its an SUV not WAGON
on the titles in the US it says wagon
@@Noelonthemoon mine said suv.. New York
@@parisj0354 not mine -NJ
I wish the U.S. could have got the STI SJ Foresters. I love mine but the cvt is kinda meh and not being given the option to get it with a stick or without a sunroof according to the dealerships in my area is kinda shitty.
Marcus I'm still waiting for the 6a13 jet tags ;)
Never knew they made these, I love wagons. What kinda trq numbers and weight on that??
Ben W with the domestic scene
Ben W don't forget the s wagons from Audi
I want one so bad
