  • This was not a movie I expected to watch. And... wow. Just... how did this happen? I try to think about the number of people who had to believe this was a good idea, many of them with stable enough careers that they could afford to be picky about the jobs they take, and my mind simply reels.

I'll be honest, the idea of someone being haunted by their heart donor because the donor doesn't think they're enjoying life and appreciating the gift sounds like a good premise for a Doctor Who story

I thought it was going to be about Clark's character being terminally I'll and this was literally her last Christmas. She finds a guy who is her soul mate and even though he knows she's dying, he stays with her and gives her the best Christmas/holiday she'd ever had. Giving her the best memories of her life before she dies. Finding reciprocal love during your last holiday on this earth seemed like a depressing, inspiring romance movie. I thought that's where they were going.

  • @nataliekmaguire

I saw the film last night. I had seen the trailer three months earlier, and figured out THEN that Tom was an angel/ghost (I think someone in the comments went so far as to guessing that he was Kate's organ donor), because he was simply too good to be true. So I went in knowing exactly what I was in for.
Honestly, I enjoyed it. This is far from my usual taste, but the actors are good, they all have sincere chemistry with eachother, and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. I don't think anyone but Emilia Clarke could have done this role and made the film as enjoyable as it was. She was believable and engaging in every way (as a hot mess, as someone dealing with trauma, as someone trying to make amends). My family and I have an Eastern European background so seeing Emma Thompson playing a convincing Slavic matriarch added an extra level of joy for me. And there was something about Kate/Clarke's vulnerability when discussing her surgery, and her feelings of worthlessness afterwards, that really moved me.
Don't go into the movie expecting to be surprised. Go in it for the (eye-wateringly) beautiful lights, and for an uplifting story about overcoming depression and finding your place in the world.

Here's my pitch for making the movie for the whole line “last:
Starts the same, but goes an extra step. The ‘very next day’ after her life-saving heart transplant, she herself is hit by a bus or something, and the same heart is transplanted AGAIN, this time into the chest of a genderfluid person.
Both ghosts are now haunting the same person. They start bickering like a married couple about what happened, and our genderfluid character starts to think the two represent their own feminine and masculine sides fighting for dominance.
The three work things out and become a polyamorous couple. They all live happily ever after, even though two of them are dead. ~DA END~

We were also just dumbfounded about the fact that, during the movie, She somehow gets into a for-sale apartment all by herself. The odd tone of the trailers makes a lot more sense knowing the twist. My husband I had this conversation about them:
Him: "What is this?" Me: "I dunno. One of those dumb holiday romantic comedies, I guess."
Him: "It's a comedy?" Me: "I mean, I assume so. That's what the genre is called..." (Ponders not only odd lack of jokes in the trailer but also a strangely creepy/somber delivery of the "last christmas" song.)
I wondered if he were some kind of alien or supernatural being, but...wow.

This review was hilarious. Thanks for the much needed moment of levity. And hey, you got to give them points for finding the most on the nose way to work the song into the script lol.

I actually have a theory on this movie. Basically, I think it was supposed to be a "love actually" type of movie but then, they got Emilia Clarke and decide to make the movie more about her (because I love Emma Thompson, Michelle Yeoh or Henry Golding but none of them have the star power that Emilia has)

i knew they werent actually gonna follow the song cuz its about a girl who got her heart broken and the next year she found someone new, because none of the trailers mentioned the past relationship but WOW i was not expecting it to be that stupidly literal LOL

Wow, the movie may have been a mess, but this video was definitely worth my Patreon pledge - I'm going have to put it on my "Watch again because of your reactions" list. My trajectory on Tom - Manic Pixie Dream Dude; Angel/Ghost; OMG, he's the donor. I can't believe I didn't see the title/lyric/plot convergence coming, though.
From the sound of it, anybody seeing this movie since the stroke of Sunday who's participating in Whamageddon is pretty well done for. (Go as long as you can in December without hearing Wham's rendition of the song.)
BTW, the bonus clip at the end letting your hair down was adorable - I always wondered how it fit under the hat.

At my pharmacy I was offered tickets to go see this movie and I thought "it sounds stoopid, but stupid flicks with friends can be fun"
Then my coworkers and boss and their kids daughters wanted to see the movie and I excused myself.
The next morning they were all pretty confused xD
But apart from that: if a movie is spoilt if you know the twist it's a terrible movie. I first watched "the sixth sence" when it was already like 10 years old and it was really fascinating seeing the details that apparently everyone else missed on their first viewing.

I actually went to see this, not knowing much about it, just from the tv trailers. I enjoyed the cheesiness of it but that ending had me going ‘wait what?’ I didn’t cop the twist at all which is probably a good thing 😂. I said to my mum as we left the cinema ‘they took those lyrics way too literally’ 😂

Other subject, but since we are already talking about Last Christmas: It is my absolute favorite Doctor Who Christmas Special and it has kind of become a tradition for me to watch it every year. It just never gets old.
Not sure if you are looking for any more video ideas for this month (probably not), but if you'd like to just give us a list of nerdy holiday episodes, I personally would love it very much. I am currently doing a Winter Holiday Special review series on Tumblr, so I put together a list of like 12 Christmas and 3 New Years episodes (I skipped a bunch of Doctor Whos). If anyone is interested, I can give you the list.

Just to be accurate, it's not a George Michael song, it's a Wham song. Let's not forget Andrew Ridgeley as he was just as much a part of that group of George, maybe even the real talent (voice aside).
When I first heard of this I didn't get the Hallmark feeling but completely got the generic Xmas movie thing. I was still okay with it after that because sometimes a seasonal feelgood movie is welcome. Then I heard about the 'twist' and it fell right into place as a Hallmark movie. The type of movie that Rachael Leigh Cook, Kimberly Williams and between season CW superhero show actors get.

Apparently it turned a profit. :D Tripled its shooting budget if you count all markets. Probably also make money on Netflix or something. I thought it looks kind dumb from the commercials, but Emilia Clark looked the best she's looked outside of Dani.

I mean... It would be a good plot for a horror movie, a guy stalking a girl because he apparently doesn't approve of the life she is living with his heart and trying to kill her... "But the very next day you gave it away / This year, to save me from tears / I'll give it to someone special"
It gaves me stalkerish vibes (and serial killer ones)
"Tell me, baby / Do you recognize me?"
And, of course, the dismemberment of the girl to get his heart out of her.
"I wrapped it up and sent it / With a note saying, "I love you, "
Oh, but it doesn't end there because, as Supernatural teached us, ghosts hunt what they left behind and this will happen again and again and again.
A horror christmas movie for ever tied to one of the most popular christmas songs.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Emilia Clarke is becoming the female Jai Courtney, not being a terrible actor but not being a great one either, they can be good and then constantly getting lead roles in bad movies and giving an okay performance
