Robin Williams was sick. So badly that he almost had no brain left. He did not end his own life because of depression. But ended his suffering. There was no way of healing for him. Lewy body dementia.
@SOBEKCrocodileGod Yeah he did have both, they're not mutually exclusive illnesses. That firm of dementia oftens leaves people with a lot of s**cidal ideation (and potential for trying to go through with it) either way.
He had Lewy Body Dementia. With that, he may have never really contemplated his suicide or rather he wasn’t thinking like a “normal” suicidal person. He was not himself - a lot of times they tell people with LBD to have someone watch over them continuously due to suicide.
@@ZackHeisethe more complicated nature of a death by suicide can actually cause the grieving process to be slower. The confusion, anger, and guilt definitely adds to the pain of losing someone. It surely doesn’t diminish it.
I met Grey Griffin last year and she was so sweet. She also placed her hand on my heart and hugged me after I told her about the death of my late older brother. My brother died in the same day as Mary Kay Burgman and it was the same method as Mary Kay did. He also died in November 11. It's pretty disturbing. Overall: Grey Griffin reminds me of my elementary school teacher alot. If you have siblings? Cherish them while you can.
Yes. Grey Griffin also voiced Lana Loud, Lola Loud and Lily Loud in Nickelodeon’s latest animated series, The Loud House, as instructed by Chris Savino in 2016.
Genuinely disgusted by the comment he made about Mary Kay's passing. It's been years since he said it but it will never not bother me. Mary Kay's Daphne was such a huge part of my childhood. To see someone like Butch make such a distasteful and mean remark after what happened is despicable.
Butch Hartman loves to remind everyone that his only positive quality is that he isn’t the literal pdf file working next door…although he never called the cops on him either, so
The fact Butch would mock the death of the woman who provided the original voice of one of his characters and even saying it was Tara's fault that she died is just sickening... Sorry you had to go through all that, Mary. You were amazingly talented and unforgettable...
Yup. 😓 Robin's battle with LBD was super unfortunate. To this day, he and so many others who "rolled the random dice outcome" to get that disease in the later years are sorely missed.

I knew Mary Kay very well, and this breaks my heart all over again. I was writing for a national comedy radio network in L.A. in the 90s, and she supplied voices for many of the characters that I wrote. She was an absolute joy to work with, always with high energy and love for her work. When she came into the studios to record her parts, the vibe was taken to a higher level...a redheaded pixie who made everyone in the room laugh their asses off. None of us had ANY idea what she was going through; she never let anyone know...that's how good of an actress she was. Even her husband didn't know. This is what made her suicide such a devastating shock. I still have tons of CDs of the material that we worked on, some of which is on my channel here on RUclips....I hope some of you have a listen; she's not hard to find in that batch of bits. RIP Mary Kay...you will NEVER be forgotten. 😭😭😭😭😭
I'll have to take a look! I love found media. My husband helped my aunt clean house after my uncle passed, and rescued a ton of harddrives. He found a lot of radio commercial outtakes and practice on there that we'd have never heard if she just tossed them.

No they are not. They very much so are not. Talking is not acting. Unless voice actors are motion tracked like in video games they are not actors in the slightest
Let’s all stop for a moment and recognize that some people deal with pain and trauma through humor, including mockery. It’s possible her death still affected him @ the time of that recording and that was his way of coping and compartmentalizing. People handle personal tragedy differently, don’t assume malice when it’s more likely an awkward attempt to address emotional pain.
@Jiraya27 and there's a time and place to do so. Doing that shit on a podcast years later trying to "throw blame" at her replacement is disgusting. There's using humor to try and deal with tragedy, and then there's being completely tone deaf years later when he could have said literally anything else about her. Like idk, talk about how great she was and how they all miss her. Not try to say "Hey guys, Tara Strong had a hand in her suicide".
Except this is how certain people (guys mostly) joke with each other. On one hand it’s a test- can I trust you, as a friend, to understand & accept that I can say this thing which, in any other context, would be incredibly offensive and abhorrent, without getting offended and blowing up? How strong is our bond? It’s no different than the Tom Brady roast that just took place. On the other hand, might he have misjudged the relationship between he & Tara? Sure. Let’s not act like this sort of exchange doesn’t happen everyday, on nearly every construction site around the world. It’s a function of the male psyche. Awkward? Yes. Meant in malice? No, the context says otherwise.
7:45 “Trey and Matt never made fun of her death, and they literally make fun of everything” speaks louder than anything. truly, what Butch Hartman said is uncalled for and disgusting. Trey and Matt tend to be very goofy guys, but in that interview you could see how much they cared about her and will miss her deeply.
@@Rowlet72.2 Same applies to any media, take Corspegrinder, the vocalist of the metal band Cannibal Corpse that has some of the most grotesque and obscene lyrics and album art ever, on stage he will sing about cumming blood and much worse stuff. But in his freetime he is a sweetheart and family man that posts pictures of him taking his daughters to the mall. This is the trope of the typical death metal artist. Yet pop artists that make love songs tend to be known for their abuse of themselves and the people around them as well as their arrogance.
It's called hypocrisy. They've mocked everything under the sun but once it hits close to home it's suddenly off limits. It shouldn't be respected in the slightest, Butch maybe a prick but at least he's not a hypocrite
Trey and Matt have always been respectful when they make fun of stuff. Book of Mormon has them poking fun at Mormon beliefs and how they try to convert people yet not to the point to tell viewers that all religions are bad and that you can believe in whatever you want even if no one else gets it.
And that is the illusion or cover, they wouldn't let you know they are hurting because they believe it was better to look like they are okay instead allowing us to know how they are
Yeah sometimes we just smile cuz being around people helps dull the pain. People can be like a balm, the only reason to smile. Then stuff gets dark when alone
Robin Williams death was because either he had cancer or dementia, so he wanted to go out on his own terms. He is happy, but he didn’t want to suffer to pain.
A lot of people don’t realize how real depression and anxiety can get and how heavy of an effect they can have on people. A lot of the most outwardly happy people are mentally suffering heavily.
yea, i wish things like talk therapy, or holistic therapy, were more socially normalized. instead of viewing them as things that only crazy people need. so many lives could be saved if they simply were brave enough to reach out for help in the time they most needed it, or if they realized what their options really were.
@@env0x The good news is that there are more awareness for common mental disorders like anxiety and depression, and solutions such as therapy or sharing how you genuinely feel is becoming more normalized. The bad news is that awareness does not equate to acceptance. Being aware of someone who has depression or anxiety does not mean they will accept you or your mental condition. If anything, some will use it as ammunition to gossip or berate you. Meanwhile, the larger majority will either silently or outright exclude you, making you a social pariah. And God help you if you have any of the lesser-known, "trendy" mental disorders like autism, schizophrenia, mania, etc. At that point, society's mask of love and acceptance comes right off and basically convinces you that you're not needed, loved, and accepted.
@@TrueEnspyre57 very true. the fact of the matter is these mental illnesses are diseases, they are very real and very debilitating. living with one of these conditions could be worse or scarier than having cancer given how society treats you. until it's established that a mental disorder is just as debilitating as a physical disorder, perhaps even more, these issues won't be avoided. there is a lot of skepticism around a lot of mental disorders, understandably, because of the corruption of certain privatized industries backing the funding of the studies defining these "diseases". but that doesn't discount from the fact that these are very real conditions that we simply don't know much about. but we know a heck of a lot more than we did a hundred years ago, when we were jamming ice picks up people's noses to cure their "craziness".
To me it was definitely the Bipolar Disorder :( with more time, episodes become more intense and frecuent. It's a Disorder that has taken many stars in Hollywood/Entertainment Productions. Like i know that in the last years, we've been having a lot of "romanticism" around Disorders and all that stuff, but people really dont understand what chemichally happens to the brain of someone with this disorder, imagine being "quimically depressed" regardles of stimuli of the surroundings.
We've gotten a ton of mental health free passes, from Simone biles to lizzo or Ben Simmons. Not really allowed to think it's a cop out no matter how badly people underperform, or talk crap like the 1st 2 I stated. No such thing as willpower. Heck even Drew Carey gives a PSA to Check your mental health after the price is right. Social media is full of people who overreact, which I do feel this comment section won't become a flame war given the topic. I am surprised how many people I've outlived, especially women (who generally take less risks and are taboo to hit back like Dana White and wife slapping each other). Sometimes luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing, like those mario party bad AI memes.
Suicidal depression is the worst kind of depression. I have depression and I'm medicated for it, but I don't have any happiness unless someone or something makes me happy. Suicidal thoughts and thoughts about being better off dead, those really screw people over. People need to realize that mental health is also health. Not just diseases and if you have a broken bone or not. Bad mental health can easily be the next most common cause of death if not looked into. Your body is nothing without your brain, and when your brain can't function properly with the correct chemicals, everything is lopsided. People with mental health struggles will exhibit tiredness, constant unhappiness, anxiety, and possibly emotional pain converted into physical pain as well. I would advise to keep an eye on loved ones with suicidal thoughts or ideation, and if they get overwhelmingly happy, please ask them why they are happy. Give them some attention. The sad ones are almost always at their happiest before they commit. I would also like to share my condolences for Mary Kay Bergman and Robin Williams specifically for this video. Robin Williams was an absolute comedy genius and was loved by most of my family during his time. Bless these two amazing souls. 🕊️❤️🩹

Yes, she has recorded some songs for the South Park Christmas album and when Trey and Matt were trying to figure out how to finish the season, they decided to animate the album and that’s how that Christmas episode came to be. It’s a subtle but beautiful tribute they did to her at the end.

I was fortunate enough to meet her about a year before she passed. She was extremely sweet, and told me a funny story about how she used to prank Helen Hunt’s dad, Gordon Hunt (he was a sound engineer & also a voice actor). Mary Kay did such a spot on Helen Hunt, she could fool her own dad! She’d call him and make lunch plans (as Helen) - he’d show up at the restaurant & no one would be there…Mary Kay would call him up and go “Gotcha!” RIP MKB.

Depression handicaps a healthy mind. The knowledge of being loved and having some sense of worth disappears. You become drained of energy, and you become blinded to the truth of your own value. You stop bathing. Sometimes you stop getting started on anything entirely. You feel worthless. You feel like you have no future. Left untreated, and especially if the sufferer finds confirmation in these negative thoughts, these feelings culminate in suicide. Depression can affect anybody. Every person suffering from it has a story, maybe even great achievements they've accomplished. Each one has a life; but despite any of it, they consider themselves to be 'worthless.' They feel like there is no reason to get out of bed anymore. They have given up on things getting 'better.' This is why for many depressed people, on the outside, they do not appear depressed. In fact, they seem really happy. Because to continue going on, to live with soul crushing thoughts, you need to convince yourself you are happy. Yet, you cry yourself to sleep when you are alone. Unfortunately, this is why many people do not get the help they need in time. That and many are afraid of being judged, of being lectured about feelings they can not control. If you ever encounter a depressed person who you care about, then help them talk through their feelings. Make them feel valued. Show them you care and that they matter to you. Give them a reason to wake up in the morning. Help them find the thing in their life they are missing. BUT NEVER LECTURE THEM ON WHAT THEY ARE MISSING OUT ON OR ROBBING THEMSELVES OF. THAT IS JUST CONFIRMING THEIR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.
Depression and PTSD have ruled my life in the past. Still have the second one, got myself out of the first one alone. I detest people and avoid any advice given by others, better alone that in bad company... long lonely road but I walked it instead of whining. I cannot comprehend how famous people cannot get out of that - it must be the horde of parasites they surround themselves with that offer no outlet or solace.
I’m not normally a depressed person, but I do recall experiencing a particularly severe instance of it when I was on antibiotics to treat an infection. And man… it was terrifying. It got so bad that it got me to start feeling suicidal - thankfully, I realized after watching a medicine commercial on TV that certain pills can cause these symptoms, which made me realize that these thoughts weren’t my own and helped to pull me out of it.
Not always. Sometimes your situation IS a dilemma with no good outcome for you. I hate that people always romantize life and turn death to a taboo. Real depressions change the brain , yes but each person should judge for themselves if they are strong enough to stuffer through life and if it's worth it. and no outside can ever judge other than they. I will always be thankful for my big depression and suicidcal thoughts back then. I was very close but too afraid of the process of dying yet I wished for death. And it's not a bad thing. It was the most intense time of my life and I never sucked in all enviromental stimuli so intense, because your brain isn't focused with anything else anymore. Also the process of wanting to die and getting to terms with it is super exhausting and complicated (unless you are out of your mind because medications or whatnot) . I chose to live because my time wasn't there but it's not a "great " thing. It happens or it won't happen. And to always just think of "the people around you / close to you" is a super egocentric point of view. It's not about them it's about YOU and you alone since you should not live for someone else but for yourself. And your last paragraph is pretty disturbing and disgusting. But it mirrors the most disgusting views of society, you rather force someone to live to feel better. You can offer help but if they truly don't want you or medication then accept and respect it . TBH these "caring forcing people" are the most sickening part of hving depression. There are types of depression where you need attention or you seek attention yes. But there are also some where you don't WANT and you are excluding yourself from social life on purpose.
After Butch Hartman made fun of her death, that was when I officially lost my respect for him, because making jokes about people who committed suicide isn’t funny at all. The only way that kind of joke can maybe work is if it was a fictional character like Superman or something, but on a real person who actually committed suicide, that’s sick.

Yeah it just feels like today PC and Wokeness just got stronger due to the internet. Now that everybody has a voice on platforms like twitter and Reddit those people who get offended easily are much louder which leads to more movies caving in to the pressure of that crowd which is unfortunate.
@@bullylowenthal2683 it means something different to whoever you ask and it doesn’t even matter. The point is people are sensitive and feel like they need to be validated in every piece of media they enjoy. In my opinion that’s harmful to the creative process and well we’ve seen many examples today of shows and movies that halt whatever story they are telling so they can pander to certain people to make them feel validated which results in bad writing most of the time.
@Guava11534 just like people are sensitive because of a black character lead in movies and video games which is nothing new and bad writing happens because the writers are either clueless or studio interference not because of woke. Of course you can't define it because you don't know what it means
@@bullylowenthal2683 buddy you’re arguing with a wall right now. At no point did I say I was offended that movies are making women or black people lead protagonists. What I’m referring to when I mean pander to people is things like the mandalorian season 3 or the penguin being a woman in caped Crusader. I see nothing wrong with wanting to make a movie or show that is made to represent people. I am a Mexican American with dreams of making it out poverty to help my family own a home that is ours. When I saw the blue beetle I have to admit that movie resonated with me because I felt the struggles that Jaime was dealing with. What I have a problem with is simply swapping a characters race or giving him a disability for the sake of trying to do what movies like the blue beetle did. That is simply not enough and it makes fans of those characters annoyed due to them being changed. If you want good representation of black people or women then make movies about black people and women don’t just gender swap the penguin and call it a day. Unfortunately there are many people who think this way that if a show or movie doesn’t include them and their people then that movie is racist or sexist and it influences studios to force representation in a disruptive manner.
This really hurts. You never realize how horrible something is, until it happens to you. The other day I learned that my best friend, who I knew since the second grade, ended his own life. He was 19.
As someone who has struggled with depression my entire life, I find it extremely callous for people to think that the crisis line is a cure all and you should think of them first. The line really can't do anything for you other than listen to you. That is how America solves the problems of its people, blames them retroactively when it did nothing to help
Matt and Trey's acknowledgement of her is so touching. They speak of her talent as a truly great choice actress able to do so many different voices where as most can only do 1 or two (like her replacement for Timmy, TS has 2 voices and her own in her arsenal) she blew my mind being the voice for the women in South Park.
I love when 'advice' comes like "oh, just don't think that way! Think positive and happy thoughts!" Honey that's the problem. It physically and mentally hurts *trying* to dig your way back out of the pit. It's a genuine weight around your heart and mind.
She was the original voice of Jay Jay the Jet Plane, and her character was later voiced by Debi Derryberry (the voice of Jimmy Neutron herself) after her death. I grew up with Jay Jay as a child, and rewatching it hits different knowing this fact. God bless her soul. ❤️❤️❤️

Man, I wish she was still alive, she actually gave Matt and Trey a couple of ideas for the characters I heard. I never really liked Eliza Schneider, April Stewart Mona Marshall voicing the female characters. Mary K just had more range in my opinion.
I swear the more I hear about Butch Hartman the more I find myself greatly disliking that....thing. Anyways, I didn't know any of this, as I was just a kid during South Park's earlier years thus I of course wouldn't have been looking for such information. Voice acting is a notoriously difficult field to break into, let alone shine in. It’s so sad that she didn’t seem to realize just how incredibly talented she was. A true legend cut short.
Butch Hartman is such a horrible man. That interview with Tara is SO HORRIBLE to listen to. She is APPALLED the entire time. It’s NEVER funny at any point, Butch is just being awful…
very respectful and classy to edit and end this the way you did. it's almost like you told this story to be a beacon to people suffering. like the purpose was more than a fun fact video
i love how her husband uses her death as a way to help others going through the same thing she went through. good for him to move on from that grief and use it for the better.
I’m just thinking of how she would have felt if she went to conventions, seeing the people she’s touched with her voice. I can imagine hearing telling stories at her panels, meeting her at her autograph table with a banner showing all the characters she’s voiced and how much it would have truly meant to her and how sad I feel knowing she missed out on such experiences, because I know how much it would have meant to her and her fans.
Struggling with depression myself, this is a heartbreaking reminder of what impact you make on those who loved you by taking your own life. A lot of times, you do try to put on a smile to make everyone feel better. It's hard though when you don't feel quite whole on the inside.
When you realize that Robin Williams probably performed in honor of her and then think of how long he was contemplating his own suicide is crazy
As soon as he said robin Williams preformed it a second blanket of sadness washed over me
Robin Williams was sick. So badly that he almost had no brain left. He did not end his own life because of depression. But ended his suffering. There was no way of healing for him. Lewy body dementia.
@@Marengen1I think he did also have depression though
@SOBEKCrocodileGod Yeah he did have both, they're not mutually exclusive illnesses. That firm of dementia oftens leaves people with a lot of s**cidal ideation (and potential for trying to go through with it) either way.
He had Lewy Body Dementia. With that, he may have never really contemplated his suicide or rather he wasn’t thinking like a “normal” suicidal person. He was not himself - a lot of times they tell people with LBD to have someone watch over them continuously due to suicide.
Imagine having to replace your friend as a voice actor or even a live-action actor after they committed suicide. RIP Mary and hats off to Grey.
It could be easier than you think. Suicides can make people upset, sad, and angry. It's not like a normal passing
@@ZackHeiseIt’s not easy. Doesn’t matter how they die, losing a loved one is losing a loved one

It's more verification that no matter who you are nor how much success, coin, connections, nor popularity one has... there remains the possibility of the soul being broken by some unknown, sinister forces. 😓 Must give us pause. Reflection is truly key.

Let’s all stop for a moment and recognize that some people deal with pain and trauma through humor, including mockery. It’s possible her death still affected him @ the time of that recording and that was his way of coping and compartmentalizing.

Like idk, talk about how great she was and how they all miss her. Not try to say "Hey guys, Tara Strong had a hand in her suicide".

Well what do expect from a young-Earth believer? They don’t even believe that dinosaurs were real.
@kenthuang436 Uhh what do dinosaurs gotta do with anything? 🤨
They have given up on things getting 'better.'
This is why for many depressed people, on the outside, they do not appear depressed.
I've been there. It was brutal. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
Dude, get outta my head.
I never had respect for butch. He’s a giant douchebag. This clip only confirms it
"Either everything can be joked about or nothing can" was south parks motto forever, and you people loved it when it was jokes about gays or minorities, but a guy cracks a joke about somebody he knew and your panties are all twisted up, its hilarious
@@samm3639 the difference is those jokes were satire
@@samm3639 South Park knew how to be safe with their jokes and never made jokes about people or things they didn’t know. That’s f***ing sick
Really emotional, such a talented lady. I'm a hobby voice artist who suffers from depression as well as having other series of mental health issues, including anxiety, as well as suffering from Aspergers Syndrome.
I once had a job as a voice artist for a big project, first paid job, but I've since been let go, it's amazing I am still alive. Right now, I've moved on from the painful experience of being let go, but let me tell you, it can hurt, moving on can hurt. Most of all, we both or all don't realize how much we hurt each other, as long as we don't make anymore mistakes like I did and pushed the envelope too far, we can pull through this.
Back to Bergman, extraodinary talent, loved her voicework, especially in South Park, nobody had such depth as her.
Her range was incredible and it’s a tragedy we lost her too soon. Wherever she is I hope she found peace.

Depression is above all else a dirty rotten liar. When you’re deep in it, it can make you believe the most awful things about yourself. Don’t believe it.
As a survivor of an attempt thats been struggling a lot recently, this video was really powerful and I cried. I loved her voice and I wish Mary didnt have to go through all that pain alone. I wish it was easier for people like us to truly believe that anyone else is there. Rest in peace. Such a beautiful ending speech from her husband
Glad you're still here bud
I remember finding out about her years ago and what happened to her and being pretty much emotional and sad. Really wish things turned out better for her and didn't pass away.

I think the clip of what her husband said at the end of the video just saved me, particularly the part about her feeling like nobody else could understand the pain she was going through. I'm months into my traumatic brain injury recovery and it's been unbearable and isolating and I've really been so close to giving up these past couple weeks. Be kind to people. You don't know what is going on someone's mind.
As someone who deals with a mental disability and similar mental health issues myself I've always had a heavy heart for Mary. Its a shame she never got the help she needed. I understand her position though as sad as it is. I can't speak for her but from someone who also experiences this, it can be very embarrassing and uncomfortable to talk about what you're going through with others. Even if you're on the verge of madness. You want help but you don't want it out there. So you just rough it out and put on a smile in public.
5:35 I find it so morbidly ironic and horrifying that Robbin Williams would’ve sung with her if she didn’t die…
She hid her sadness soo well, looking at her smile sadness would be the last thing anyone could of guessed that would possibly be troubling her. Her overall appearance gives out a vibe of a nice and kind person, she's also very pretty making it just hard to believe she would commit suicide. Smh sad messed up story
Unfortunately, some people simply do not *listen*. They "hear", but they do not LISTEN. A heavy but heartfelt and harrowing distinction, yet all too commonly overlooked.

It's extremely sad. Depression sucks took away too many great actors. I know how depression feels. I don't wish it on anyone.
The fact that Matt and Trey are known for their crude humour in South Park shows more dignity and love for Mary than "I created your childhood" Butch Hartman says a lot about Butch as a human being.
I'm glad she's finally getting the attention she deserves. Rest well, Mary Kay 💜 gone but not forgotten
This woman went through hell. She was struggling so bad to stay and she couldn’t do it anymore, she thought she couldn’t do it anymore and her life wasn’t worth it.

Still can't believe the messed up thing Butch Hartman said about her dudes a total scumbag
0:01 I love how people have been saying this for decades. Everyone acts like it "PC" or "wokeness" only started recently.
Yeah it just feels like today PC and Wokeness just got stronger due to the internet. Now that everybody has a voice on platforms like twitter and Reddit those people who get offended easily are much louder which leads to more movies caving in to the pressure of that crowd which is unfortunate.
@Guava11534 nice joke 😂😂 define woke
They speak of her talent as a truly great choice actress able to do so many different voices where as most can only do 1 or two (like her replacement for Timmy, TS has 2 voices and her own in her arsenal) she blew my mind being the voice for the women in South Park.
depression isn't something you feel about one thing you feel it about everything
I love when 'advice' comes like "oh, just don't think that way! Think positive and happy thoughts!"
Honey that's the problem.
Had NO IDEA this had happened until watching this video, and I grew up during her time in South Park. Thank you for making this. What a heartbreaking revelation.
My wife was lost in 2011 in similar circumstances. Friends and family who are left behind, we never forget and you never "get over it," you just carry the weight and get stronger against your own free will. RIP.
This is very heartbreaking and it's even moreso knowing that her career was far more safe and even prolific than she may have realized. Depression and anxiety can do absolute horrors to the mind. I pray she's resting in peace.
I really appreciate this video. If nothing else, posting Dino Andrade's plea at the end is well worth the time. Heartbreaking that he and his friend came home to find Mary.
