- Another Piece of History..Portions of the last 20 minutes of the Jay Lawrence Show from KYW-AM Cleveland..At 5AM The Change is made to WKYC-AM 1100 due to FCC order of NBC and Westinghouse switching markets, KYW moved back to Philadelphia while WRCV Radio and TV moved to Cleveland as WKYC..Lawrence is at his best, with comic references to both Westinghouse and NBC..KYW-1060 Philly sign-on is included also..

Fantastic work, Jay Bird. The Group W/NBC O&O era were the finest years for TV3, Radio 1100, and FM105.7, the latter carried NBC Monitor on weekends. KYW invested a lot in Cleve. and was successful. The call letters WKYC stand for KY Cleveland!

I was in college in Wooster, OH, during the mid-60s. I listened to Jay Lawrence steadily while there.
Station's been through several sets of calls over the years, from WTAM to KYW to WKYC to WWWE and back to the start, 1100/WTAM.
Interesting how Jay refers to the new WKYC as "The Big One", a slogan used recently on WTAM.
@@dandee5422, WKYC Radio 11 would promote their broadcast strength, especially as it dropped in the ratings to WIXY 1260, which they informally referred to as "Wixy Pixy." Notice near the end of this video Jay Lawrence calls it "The Great K in Cleveland." I can't recall the entire jingle, but they had a jingle that ended with "...50 thousand watts of power." In fact, their last theme as a Top 40 station was "Power Radio."
I remember these things because I was just getting into radio, having turned 12 years old one month before the date of the broadcast in this video.

No. It was indeed 5AM..In fact the audio was approximately 4:30-5AM..(Parts may have been edited)but it was definitely Jay Lawrence in the overnight hours..
Sold in 1972 to become WWWE (3WE) and the format changed to MOR. The FM counterpart was renamed WWWM (M105).
It's been 50 years since KYW in Cleveland changed its calls to WKYC and remains as Top 40. First, WINS in NYC went from Top 40 to news, and then this. KYW still remains in Philadelphia as an AM station for news and a TV station as a CBS affiliate. Happy belated 50th anniversary to WKYC (now WTAM).

I liked that WKYC Radio 1100 news sounder, heard at 11:35 in this recording; the best in my opinion. Bill Tompkins was a reporter with substantial integrity. It's such a shame radio news has become so minimized these days. In the mid-'60's era, we had "NBC Radio News On the Hour," a 5 minute network feed, and on the half hour, we had 3 minutes of local news on WKYC Radio 11 reported by a professional news staff that reported for WKYC-TV 3, also.
Jay Lawrence did a super production job with this segment. After another stint or so as a DJ, Lawrence became a popular talk radio host in Arizona. He retired from broadcasting and is now an Arizona State Representative, a Republican. He has a presence on Facebook.

After NBC returned to Cleve., its hourly NBC Radio News On The Hour was broadcast from the WKYC studios, initially at 3:00 p.m. EST, later at 5::00 p.m. EST, 5 days a week, anchored by Virgil Dominic. Coincidently, Jay Lawrence was the announcer, "NBC Radio News On The Hour, here's Virgil Dominic;" After a commercial, "Here again, Virgil Dominic;" After Virgil ended the news, "Virgil Dominic NBC News Cleveland," Jay would close, "You've been listening to NBC Radio News On The Hour. Listen again, on the hour, for NBC news."
The Jay Bird received $50.00 for that work.
That change occurred at 6:00 p.m., correct? The notes above say 5:00 a.m.!

Goolardi, Hoolihan and Big Chuck, Captain Penny, Woodrow the Woodsman, Franz the Toyman, Barnaby, Mr Gingaling. Ha. Bow were those the daze :D
It's interesting how Jay Lawrence does jokes about General David Sarnoff, Jack Paar, David Susskind (a top TV producer of the era), Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Merv Griffin, Regis Philbin (whose Westinghouse-syndicated talk show was replaced by Griffin), and Hugh Downs, all of whom had links to NBC or Group W/Westinghouse.
BTW, WKYC was the first NBC-owned radio station to become a straight-ahead mainstream top-40 rocker, due in large part to the fact Group W had success with that format.
NBC didn't learn there lesson from the extortion they pulled on Westinghouse, as they would screw Conan O'Brien out of the Tonight Show in favor of chinboy Leno 54 years later. The FCC should order that reversed too. Then again, Conan's better off without them and is doing great on TBS.

@@sillygoose635 WNAC had to be sold because it's former parent company got caught in some shenanigans. Eventually, the station became WHDH and affiliated with NBC. Then NBC pulled the affiliation in favor of abother station. WHDH is currently an independent.
@@gidzmobug2323 I know what happened, RKO has some questionable proceedings and was forced to sell the station.
Big ratings drop with Conan. Jay Leno brought them back promptly; a worthy successor to the King of Late Night, Johnny Carson.
That Sounds Like A Breed Of Babies Taking Over This Station.
