Your male emu is most likely stressed by something on other side of the fence and caused him rubbed on his neck and not to mention that he's wild emu and he might need some more space as he is still growing up. He's not full grown-up yet. And notice how beaks are opened, that's cuz he's stressed. And the way he laid good neck on your shoulder is REALLY REALLY special and so heartwarming! I can see you guys taking great care of him. But it's just that he's wild emu and he might feel needing more space, OR there was something on other side that got him spooked and felt stressed. I know it's not from females picking on him, cuz there's no stratch on his neck, and it's not like cut bloody. It's just all of his feathers loss from rubber on fence. And I'm so glad you put up the tarp on fences, he looked less stressed and he's not right by fence, and the tarp helps relax him and helps him calm down more, I'm so glad you did that! I was planning to tell you to try put up tarps, but you did that, you are great care taker of emu! Good job! 👍🏼 I love your farm animals! 👍🏼

Those females are bigger and more rowdy than Bamboo. He may just have stressed out his last nerve. Poor baby. That wound was surely horrifying... I did a sort of scream when I saw it. Bamboo is the main mascot of the farm, there would be global mourning if something happened to him other than old age. And he is still very young in Emu years. Wow. Good work on your fast treatment and the segregation while he recovers. Blessings to Bamboo and the whole family. Nothing like some hard hard work in the high heat for an animal emergency. A mentor of mine who breeds and raises emus told me around 2 years old female emus starting to become sexually mature will start to bully the males but eventually stop once breeding season begins and they have picked their mates. I think the girls were picking on him and he probably ran into the fence and scrapped the skin off. Especially the way he was so obsessively passing the fence when you first came out like he was trying to get away.

I'm going to bet it's stress from the girls picking on him and he's trying to get away from them so hard he's running himself into the fence. I think keeping him separated from the girls will help a lot, and you may have to consider letting Peekaboo go to a new family to calm the dynamic between them as Cashew is always going to be on edge feeling like she has to compete with another female for Bamboo's attention. Then only put Cashew and Bamboo together when you want them to pair. That's probably the safest way.
We can all tell Bamboo is a big baby the way he cuddled with you when he wasn't feeling well. You might also want to get him checked out by a veterinarian experienced with livestock though just in case to rule out any systemic causes for his rubbing and general lethargy.
Not going to lie my heart dropped to my stomach when I saw the title. 2020 has been rough on everyone and the last thing any of us need is to lose Bamboo.

The males live in a group while the females live on their own here in the wild of Queensland where I live in the Outback when I travel anywhere I always see the large group of males together and the females alone separated by choice the females via for the males attention when it’s time for mating not the other way around once they lay the egg they leave the area and the egg to the male emu to raise male emu can have up to 1-9 eggs on the next he is looking after but they are not all from the same female. When the chicks hatch he looks after them until they are old enough to fend for themselves the males stay with him but any females in the group always leave when they are old enough. I have seen 2 females together once in a while but never more than that. There is a large group of male emus living together just out side of town which I see a lot off I love watching them running and man do they run fast 😹😹😹😹 the only time I see the females with them is when it’s the mating season once they have laid the egg or eggs they up and leave the nest and never go back to it. The males will look after the eggs and if they are lucky a few more females might lay eggs in the nest as well.

Did you check him for feather lice? Sometimes the feather lice can be so itchy that it can drive the birds to madness, severe rubbing , ripping all their feathers out. I would definitely check him for feather lice, mites, the works. I think a vet visit is in order. Yes, even big birds need to go to the vet sometimes...

Breeding usually is in dec and jan, must be he's just nor feeling well. Cats also have tiffs if the dominant head cat is felling under the weather and switch dominance heads. Sudden male humping would also piss the females off out of heat. But if he was rubbing at that corner, he must be seeing something there to attack since he doesn't do it with the rest of the fence to think its just a sore throat.
