I successfully learned all 197 countries and plan to learn more Geography trivia. On this channel I also play Geoguessr. This is a game that uses Google Street View to drop you in a random location and you have to work out exactly where you are on the worldwide map. Geoguessr was created in 2013. The Russian writing on the nuclear bombs were a bit of a give away.
Jack should learn to read Cyrillic. It takes less than a day to learn one of the alphabets and it would really useful for stuff like this and Geoguessr. He could start with the Russian alphabet since it the most commonly seen one and then, with a bit of extra studying, it'd be quite easy to learn the differences between the Cyrillic alphabets used with other languages.

You can see the iconic Chicago Theatre sign on right quite a ways down the street. There's no reason Jack should know the theater, but he could have got the city since it wasn't a bait sign for a Chicago Theatre elsewhere.
I was annoyed when I played that day because I lost two points on the location by being over 100 m off. I either nailed the year or was two off, but I had no insight beyond the cars.
I plonked in a dry looking part of Ukraine for the Kazakhstan round on the theory that Soviet missles were more likely to be near the rest of Europe to be more threatening. I made the same 1989 year guess.
I went Davos for the Obama/Merkel round using the same logic as Jack. Despite being from the US, I was off by two years as I thought Obama started to go gray earlier.
