St. Louis "Infuriates" Darius Cooks | TIMD Episode 5

  • The city of St. Louis has been on fire this weekend because of Darius Cooks. He travels from city to city and hosts dinner events in each location, and this previous weekend he was in St. Louis. He was infuriated and saddened by the food scene in our city, and gave some honest criticisms, and some took them very personally.
He has millions of followers, but I sent him a DM anyways asking him to be on the show. I wasn’t expecting a response, but he said he’d be honored.
This episode is one of the most highly anticipated pieces of content I’ve ever posted, mainly because this was his last stop before heading out of STL after a series of reviews.
I knew the perfect place to take him to, Rated Test Kitchen, which is run by Juwan Rice. I had him on the show a few weeks back. The entire premise of the concept is to bring out your inner food critic, and he was the only person I had confidence in to actually receive a positive rating from Darius.
I told Darius that we could film my podcast at Rated and not only dive deeper into his story and the issues with St. Louis, but to also have an insightful conversation over, what I hoped would be, good food.
People that tuned into his live stream had nothing but positive comments. Will this interaction change Darius’s views on St. Louis, though? Hit the subscribe button, and let’s dive into this.

I use to live in Chicago but I now relocated back in the metropolitan area of STL. I will have to agree with him with the lack of. The food scene is scarce for Black-owned restaurants. When I find and show support, they can’t seem to keep their hours of operation flowing consistently or they close-up. Even with the African/Jamaican black international restaurants, the food is basic as hell and their hours of operation is deceptive. I am too disappointed with the food scene in STL.

But he's got to understand that there are more ghetto people in St Louis than there are people that are not ghetto so that's the foods they want that's the food you going to get. But I love the food y'all eating I don't eat shrimp but I love me some french toast

I dunno... Dude charges $289 to serve Kool aid sangria from a plastic bin. Hard to trust his judgment on what is and isn't good. It looks basic, his descriptions don't show any understanding of the craft. I've eaten at Michelin starred restaurants for less money. Interesting interview nonetheless.

What’s funny is I went to Darius restaurant in ATL & it wasn’t good. The restaurant looked cheap & old…..keep in mind I seen him renovate this place from his live but it felt like I was bamboozled. The customer service was bad & the food was plain & taste like it was microwaved. I also ordered 1 of his cakes & it was horrible

Black owned restaurants in St Louis does suck went there when my kids were little couldn't find a real authentic black restaurant at all. Every restaurant I went to had food that takes like it just came from the grocery store. No originality.

COMING FROM CHICAGO TO ST. LOUIS, ST. LOUIS IS SO NICE. EVERYONE IS NICE. MY DADDY IS FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO AND HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT WEARING A CUBS SHIRT. I SAID, "DAD, EVERYONE HERE IS NICE, NO ONE IS GOING TO ATTACK YOU." HE WAS SURPRISED. EVERYONE HERE IS, REALLY IS, NICE. HE DIDN'T EVEN GET A SIDE EYE FOR HIS SHIRT. 😂. ST. LOUIS INVENTED, OR I HEARD, ICED TEA AND TOASTED RAVIOLI. DARIUS SHOULD BE TOLD THAT. THE WORLD FAIR THESE WERE INVENTED. THE HEAT CREATED ICE TEA TO HELP THE PATRONS OF THE WORLD FAIR FROM FAINTING AND PASSING OUT. AND THE TOASTED RAVIOLI WAS "FINGER FOOD". EASY TO EAT WITH DIPPING SAUCE ON THE SIDE. THERE YOU GO. TWO ST. LOUIS INVENTIONS. ADD SUGAR TO THE ICED TEA IF YOU WISH, DON'T IF YOU RATHER NOT. I LIKE TEA OR COFFEE WITH A LITTLE SWEETNESS, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. MY FRIEND FROM ENGLAND WAS APPALLED TO RECEIVE ICED TEA IN NOVEMBER FOR HIS "MUM" IN CHICAGO. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. ST. LOUIS ISN'T FAR ENOUGH SOUTH FOR "SWEET TEA". SORRY, DARIUS. WE HAVE ENOUGH DIABETES ISSUES. THE "DARK CLOUD" IS THE HUMIDITY HERE (MY BASEMENT HAS BLACK MOLD IN IT... EVERY HOME WILL BE CONDEMNED IF WE TALK ABOUT BLACK MOLD)! 😂. TOO STICKY IN THE SUMMER. THE CLOUD GOES AWAY IN THE SPRING AND FALL (DARIUS, COME IN THE SPRING, THE TREES BLOOM AND SMELL WONDERFUL! THE FALL ALL THE BIRDS ARE MIGRATING AND MOVE THROUGH HERE). SO BEAUTIFUL HERE. ST. LOUIS HAS A LOT OF WONDERFUL THINGS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW. EVEN THE RESIDENTS DO NOT KNOW. ST. LOUIS IS PRETTY GREAT ❤. A HIDDEN GEM... IF ONE CAN SURVIVE THE HEAT AND STICKY HUMIDITY IN LATE JULY AND EARLY AUGUST. WHEW! SWEATY TIMES! HANG IN THERE... IT'LL PASS. 😮

This is another case of if you don't understand the global system of white supremacy everything else will confuse you. Kudos for recognizing the "dark cloud", though in actuality that's the easy part. Having knowledge of the history and current socio-political climate of St. Louis is needed to dissmantel the "dark-cloud" No, this is not about "blaming da wyte man" this is about the intricacies of generations of oppressions on every level, for a multitude of groups and the status quo. St. Louis COULD be a lot of things. It's is not any of those things and (if you knew St.Louis history you would know) that is not for a lack of effort. It is because people in power keep it that way and have for generations. This has been my TED Talk.

While I’ve just started to watch this video, I’ve seen the others from his visit in our city. However, I will agree with him regarding the culinary food scene in the Lou! It’s drab to say the least especially in the Black spaces compared to other cities. But let me also say, I can only take some of what he says to heart because the worst thing for me is to talk with someone about food and they are smacking! Yiiiiiiiiikes…it’s disgusting, 🤢 rude and downright a turn off to watch.
