Absolutely gorgeous hook. I hope your sons appreciate what you made for them one day. Something that celebrates their heritage. I saw the comment about your etsy store, I'd love to see some more obsidian knapping and some obsidian pieces in your etay shop.
BackyardBowyer Different kinds of blades and cutting tools used by Polynesian and Native American peoples. Not necessarily all in obsidian, I know obsidian was reserved for the more decorative and the ones the needed to be the sharpest.
My wife has been looking for one of these for me for the past few months. This is the style been looking for, simple. Most of the ones on the internet are super fancy and made with material that raises the price. I used to own one back in my younger days when I surfed and it was made from bone. Very cool video and your son will come to love it!
Great work never seen any one use a band saw and rasp to carve serpentine you make it look easy I too carve ponamu or greenstone love watching you do your thing keep it up
Love your work and happy birthday to your son. I really like how the string/rope is tied on. Is there any way you could make a video showing how to do that?
Gotta say I really wish you had went into more detail/ shown the wrapping of the chord. Theres lots of different videos showing people having made that wrapping and not a single one says what its called so I can look it up and learn it myself.
+Woodchuck I looped the end of the cord onto the barb on the top of the hook and then used a single strand to wrap a criss-cross over the hook, making the lashing. Thanks for watching!
You're so talented BB. I get a lot of pleasure watching you do these projects. I wish I had the patience and artistic vision to do stuff like this. Thnx for posting. I hope he likes it🙂
+RedGhost1990 Most of the wood I have was bought from lumber houses or I was able to pick up felled trees. The stone I find myself, buy from rock shows or sales, or receive it through trade or as gifts. Thanks for watching!
+Totally Delirious This is! I had the previous cheaper model and it ended up burning out. I really liked the old one, but I do think this one is a lot better. It's basically a clone of the current DeWalt model with a similar over-molded plastic case. I think it is a great saw, much quieter and with more torque than the previous one. My main complaints are limited cut depth, lack of a lock switch, and poor speed control. The old saw had it's smaller motor out of the cutting area meaning you could make a cut indefinitely long. This one has a max cutting depth of about 5 inches because of the size and placement of the motor. You can't lock it in the on position, and the speed will sort of go up and down and you have to play with the switch to keep it in the right speed. I'm really bummed about the cutting depth, that's the only major thing. But this saw has way more power in the cut and stays much cooler. It powers through things the other saw would bog down on, though it likes to shed saw teeth more. I do like that the noise level is on par with a normal variable speed bandsaw. The old one sounded like a poorly lubricated chainsaw at all speeds. So if you can work around the short cutting depth, it is a great saw. I am actually thinking about getting one to use exclusively on wood. I should do a review on it too, as I've practically written one here! Thanks for watching!
BackyardBowyer who trained you to make these things everything you make I top quality if you said your a master blacksmith I'd believe you keep up the good work man
Can you make a bone carving video ? Choose what to do ı just want to see how to carve a bone maybe you could make a pends t neckackle or a knife maybe maori style fish hook?
Been watching you for quite a while and I love the variety of videos and skills. Personally I would like to see the technique used to wrap the hook and make the cordage. Maybe you can keep that one in the bank for one of those days when you are looking for a topic you can put one together. Keep up the awesome work.
Amazing! How many hours did you put into the project? I know your son will cherish his fish hook since his dad made it for him. You can see the love and care you put into it. Thanks for your demonstrations. Yours was the first you tube channel I subscribed to and your evolving passion for creating beauty continues to facinate me.
+Andee Hirano Thank you for the support! I didn't really measure and took a bunch of breaks to charge the camera. I'd say it took about 5-6 hours if you cut out the breaks. I worked on it all day.
I finally, had a chance to watch this vid, and as usual, you make things seem easy and your patience is amazing. I would've made about 10 broken hooks and 1 good one..lol Bruddah you do great work and would you like to barter with a fellow native? I make stuff from my people's backgrounds such as water drums and horn rattles and cradle boards
+Quinn Olsen Thanks, hahah! Makes me feel young! I was stumped too. I can think of a whole list of videos I've done that are less kid friendly than this one.
+Master Baphomet Hahah! That would be awesome! Gotta find a nice deep green have, might end up putting something in the recesses to darken it. Thanks for the suggestion!
SenpaiSancho YT I'm working in a wooden furniture factory. Actually, similar case happened here, we need to talk hard to Carpenters to keep working safely #Giggle
Hey, just wondering where are u originally from? I'm guessing by or last name, some island in the pacific? I'm in New Zealand BTW :-) I'm loving the Maori work!
+BackyardBowyer I know RUclips's responses can be vague and I didn't get to see the last video before it was removed but if I were to guess, it might be the references to copy righted material. The story of Maui and the cultural significance of what you are working was not created by Disney but all it takes is someone to mark it as potential copyright infringement, because of the movie references, and RUclips blocks without question. It's a pretty common issue for RUclipsrs that work with Pop culture stuff as their main gig. It's neat to see the creative way you use common materials to make cool stuff. I love what you do and look forward to new videos.
+Cameron Gentry Yes, Maui is his name. The hook is based on the Greenstone hei matau or fish hook pendants of the Maori people of New Zealand. Thank you for watching!
Would love to see how you did the lashing.
You seem like the nicest guy on youtube
+Richard James Thank you for the kind words!
Absolutely gorgeous hook. I hope your sons appreciate what you made for them one day. Something that celebrates their heritage.
I saw the comment about your etsy store, I'd love to see some more obsidian knapping and some obsidian pieces in your etay shop.
+David Wiseman Thank you! What kind of knapped pieces would you be interested in seeing?
BackyardBowyer Different kinds of blades and cutting tools used by Polynesian and Native American peoples. Not necessarily all in obsidian, I know obsidian was reserved for the more decorative and the ones the needed to be the sharpest.
BackyardBowyer Also, will you be making more stone carved/knapped pieces for your etsy store?
Your a great dad. This is a priceless gem, your son will wear with pride, because his old man made it for him
Man he's so great, I've been watching him for years and he's only gotten better. Many blessings to you and your family.
*Gives to son* What can I say except you're welcome! 😂😂😂😂
+Kamen Rider Silver Haha! Thanks for watching!

Your son is a lucky little boy. Your gift shows your thoughtfulness.
+Wayne Scace Thank you!

In a few years, he can watch this video and, perhaps, love the pendant even more.
Great work never seen any one use a band saw and rasp to carve serpentine you make it look easy I too carve ponamu or greenstone love watching you do your thing keep it up
How did you wrap it?
The thing I was hoping to learn was how you weave the fish hook with the string. Great video as always and Happy B-Day to the boy.
Love your work and happy birthday to your son. I really like how the string/rope is tied on. Is there any way you could make a video showing how to do that?
+Sandy Dennis Thank you for watching! I'll definitely do a video on trying a hook like this one!
How much would you charge to make one?
Carl Foster it will cost you only one meme. 😂
I need to fence off my stolen memes first.
damn you do so well at these videos. your a freakin natural.
If the world of cable TV shows wasnt dying off, youd have a show for sure.
+Bobbert Bobby Hahah! Thanks for watching!
Gotta say I really wish you had went into more detail/ shown the wrapping of the chord. Theres lots of different videos showing people having made that wrapping and not a single one says what its called so I can look it up and learn it myself.
maybe you can try to make the other kind of maori hand club, the "single edge one " with the little figure on the back
+masterlink 123 That would be awesome! Thank you for the suggestion!
Looks fantastic. Im sure your son would love it.
+Behrang Khosravi Thank you for watching!
You could spend thousands on a gift, but nothing is gunna beat something your dad has made you. Hope he still has it Nick!
He does. Thank you for watching!
Great Job Son...the hand finishing technique is awesome. I really do like the wrapping. Simplicity at its!
could this stone be made into a knife handle? what is this type of stone called?
How do you tie the knot on the hook
+Woodchuck I looped the end of the cord onto the barb on the top of the hook and then used a single strand to wrap a criss-cross over the hook, making the lashing.
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching!

+Klint Waters Thank you! I'm hoping to, if he's interested in it!
Looks great, do you have a source for this material ?
Is that the portable bandsaw from harbor freight? Is so is it worth buying ?
+Totally Delirious This is! I had the previous cheaper model and it ended up burning out. I really liked the old one, but I do think this one is a lot better.
