This is the song my daughter wants me to sing to her at bedtime. It started when she was tiny, and was having a very fussy night. I ran out of lullabies to sing to her, and this was the first song to pop into my head. It's been one of her favourites ever since.
Lyrics: There is a young maiden, she lives all a-lone She lived all a-lone on the shore-o There's nothing she can find to comfort her mind But to roam all a-lone on the shore, shore, shore But to roam all a-lone on the shore 'Twas of the young Captain who sailed the salt sea Let the wind blow high, blow low I will die, I will die, the young Captain did cry If I don't have that maid on the shore, shore, shore ... I have lots of silver, I have lots of gold I have lots of costly ware-o I'll divide, I'll divide, with my jolly ship's cres If they row me that maid on the shore, shore, shore ... After much persuasion, they got her aboard Let the wind blow high, blow low They replaced her away in his cabin below Here's adieu to all sorrow and care, care, care ... They replaced her away in his cabin below Let the wind blow high, blow low She's so pretty and neat, she's so sweet and complete She's sung Captain and sailors to sleep, sleep, sleep ... Then she robbed him of silver, she robbed him of gold She robbed him of costly ware-o Then took his broadsword instead of an oar And paddled her way to the shore, shore, shore ... Me men must be crazy, me men must be mad Me men must be deep in despair-o For to let you away from my cabin so gay And to paddle your way to the shore, shore, shore ... Your men was not crazy, your men was not mad Your men was not deep in despair-o I deluded your sailors as well as yourself I'm a maiden again on the shore, shore, shore ...
I agree, Lord Krishna savours the company of gifted bards in his eternal court of splendour. Freed from the cycle of rebirth, Stan no doubt serenades Svayam Bhagavan in eternity.
Just discovered him a couple weeks ago. Come to find out, June 2nd is not just my birthday anymore. I’ll celebrate that day with him for every year to come
Always loved this one. My grandmother used to sing it, and I was so delighted to find it on the 'Fogarty's Cove' album. Ah, Stan, I wish you could have stayed with us.
You make Canada proud Stan. Wish you were here to talk to........Your songs will live on far into the future. Your talent incredible. How you capture emotion and your music makes us think and think hard........about other times and places that are part of someone’s past. You sing about our history and it good for the soul. Even though you’re gone we can still peek into who you were through what you sang. You were one of a kind. God’s blessing to us all!! Wish I could’ve heard you sing live.......but maybe I will some day........in the sweet by and by....
This song: "...so the crew persuaded the young woman walking alone into their boat on the orders of a captain who 'must have' her..." Me: don't do it, Miss! D: song: "...and she pirated them down to their weapons and kitchenware..." Me: never mind.
First time I heard this song I was mighty surprised that any of the crew got out of that alive. "Then she knocked them all out-" Oh God "-and robbed them." Oh. That's... actually a pleasant change.
People are missing the point of this song. It is an echo, a tamed version of the ancient myth of the Siren, who lures sailors to their doom with her magical singing. The Maid is a supernatural creature, an expression of a mystic feminine power who laughs at the pathetic attempts of mortal men to get the better of her. "She sang captain and sailors to sleep-o." - Her song is an enchantment. "You should have known me before-o!" - They should have realized she was a Siren. "And again I'm a maid on the shore-o!" - The trap has been re-set! "Und das hat mit ihrem Singen/ die Lorelei getan." ruclips.net/video/qsoH6QFKX_4/видео.html
I find this song interesting in that it can be interpreted in both ways. The woman is "persuaded" to come aboard... but after much persuasion. That can be taken to be rather ambiguous. Certainly she doesn't seem keen to go immediately. Furthermore, she isn't noted to sing until after she is taken aboard, which makes it unlikely she is a siren as sirens lure men with the song and she did not do that. I enjoy interpreting it as a woman escaping a jerk, but I see where others can interpret in a different way.

LOL, John Roberts and Tony Barrand did this song. And the "blow high, blow low" phrase was used by Burl Ives in at least one song; I hadn't realized how similar Stan sounds in certain ways. Great singers all!
I don't think any other version could compare. This is the optimal tempo for this song, in my opinion. Solas did a version that I though was horrid, they screached it out like nails on a chalk board.
Stan's voice is like fine butter, caramel, and maple syrup . . . so blessed pleasing. He had a fine sense of rhythm, guitar playing, and bringing the older versions into our age. May the Creator both rest dear Stan, and send us more like him!!
wrong, its about a girl too smart for a lecherous sea captain. But a scrap of the ballad hints at something sinister behind the gay recital. For there, the fair maid is either a selkie or a mermaid.
Attempted rape, sure. (Although the captain was probably so full of himself that he thought it was "seduction".) But NOT successful--she used her powers to not only escape, but humiliate them. And she's still a "maid" when she gets back to the shore.
I just discovered Stan Rogers today! I must say I am shocked to say the least. Manly men, yes, but.... mighty dense in the mind department. Haven't a care, clue or concern about what makes women happy. Now if that's all there is my friend... then let's keep dancing!! EW !
That's not all there is. They are few and far between but those good men exist. I found one that knew my soul better than I did and he's made me a better person. I couldn't ask for more.
She sung captain and sailors to sleep? Well, I guess that sounded like a groupie to me. lol A different kind of love song - than traditional couples will espouse to.
Is this a good time for me to point out that this song is set in and imitates the days of yore, many hundreds of years ago? and that such ideas were common belief?

My parents put Stan Rogers on the record player each night when we kids went to bed.
+Michael MacKay You must continue the tradition, great memories are made.
I never want kids, for me own reasons, but if I had em I'd aspire to be like you mate!
The legend of Zepo-Thank you, that's a kind thing to say😊
As a father of two beautiful girls I can say that this is so heavenly to hear. Cherish your angel my friend, cherish and guard your angel
It's been 38 years since you left us, dear Stan. Yet I listen to your irreplaceable voice with a fresh heart and warm tears . . .

ZenfireTheWizard Stan was a true gift! He definitely deserved a longer life than he got
Gibson Chase such a beautiful thing to say! Wherever Stan is, I bet he’s being cherished and loved
Man, I love this song - makes me feel like an ancient mariner on the high seas everytime I hear it

He reminds me of Gordon Lightfoot. Such honest, heartfelt music telling a story. Rest his soul, now singing with the angels.

Moral of the story: sometimes people are alone for a reason.
Yeah, cause they want to 🤨
Well she certainly didn't live up get kidnapped and taken away.

My favorite sea shanty of all time - and I mean this version, by the tremendous song writer and singer, Mr. Rogers.

No, "after much persuasion" is a euphemism for her capture against her will.
I completely disagree. Its a story of rape, a cunning and strong woman who "deluded" the sailors to escape, but was never fully whole again.

Stan died a heroes death...RIP brave man - RIP!
I happened to be on the same plane with some assholes who smoked in the bathroom and it was only a 3 hours flight
My point is that it's a shame a plane fire took his life and that he indeed died a hero's death letting others get off the plane before him
wish he could`ve thought about himself for couple of minutes and not rush into the plane so many times
