I'm sure you already know this Johnny but there is a huge court case about a hit and run incident near a military base here in the UK. The victim was a British citizen and the accused perpetrator was the wife of an American who was stationed at a base. She fled citing diplomatic immunity and thus hasn't faced trial. I have worked on US bases abroad and currently live privately in a European country that has US bases. While some people resent the presence of US military, it is rarely mentioned. They almost always say that it doesn't bother them personally, and that it helps provide work for the locals and injects a ton of money into the local economy. Some have actually complained when the bases were shut down, because it killed the local economy. So, I am sure we can find the same pros and cons going back to the Roman Empire, too.

Some of these locations are part of communication networks. Some are intelligence gathering sights. Some are used to preposition equipment 'just in case'. Some are early warning facilities, like the one you mentioned in Greenland.

47-year-old black woman in America…my father did two tours in Germany, one tour in South Korea. South Korea was before me, but I attended kindergarten at Katterbach Army Base in Ansbach, Germany. I attended 4th, 5th, and 6th grades at the Strasberg Kaserne, and started 7th grade at Baumholder American High School. I loved living in Idar-Oberstein, and I loved the locals who were involved in my very young life in Ansbach. These people had so much respect and reverence for my family and I. Military family culture abroad was very much a collectivist culture and each time we returned to the U.S. I just didn’t fit, and it didn’t matter how many years in the U.S. I got under my belt, I never fit. And then I got violated, my children were violated. The American government refused to uphold the law and constitution regarding me and my children’s rights. The only institution to offer me an explanation (not justice, not protection, not safety) was the FBI. I was told these things happen sometimes, and that they would look into it and call me back. They never called back.

Living on a military installation one thing I can see is that the military population largely supports the surrounding economy and boosts it a lot.
Varying from just food, drinking, houses/rent, barbers, clothing alterations, and general shopping these area around larger installations end up making decent amounts of money from all the military personnel and their spouses that live and shop in the area.
On the negative side this military population also brings much more traffic as tons of people are trying to go to and from the same area every day. Also depending on the base they cause a lot of surrounding noise pollution whether it be aircraft, explosions, helicopters, etc.
There are both negatives and positives to living next to military installations

The US never lost a battle in Vietnam and had a kill ratio of around 60+\1 but they lost the objective because the VC hid till we were pulling out.
