The Moog is a fantastic instrument, wish I could have one myself. The built-in synthesizer on my electronic organ (1980's Wersi) gives me some or that Moog sound as well. Have you ever considered listening to Klaus Wunderlich's recordings on the Moog? He manages to get every thinkable sound out of the machine, from cheesy gun sounds to brass bands, using multitracking. You should try one of these titles: - Cherokee - Dufter Zahn - Krimologus (more to your appeal lol) They're all here on YT.
Marc, this video is awesome as always, thanks for sharing. As a drummer I have humble keyboard skills. But seven years ago I grabbed a 1981 Mini in very good condition. Your video enccouraged me playing it over and over...
That synth can produce some seriously sexy sounds. I don't know anything about synths, other than I love the sound of them. if I was to own one though, I'd like this model.
Oh, gosh DANG it. What was I THINKING by providing some sounds of the experience of playing a vintage synth? The RIGHT thing to do would have been to record it in perfect digital sound and conceal EVERY ASPECT of what it was like to actually play it. You're going to LOVE what Arturia just released.
I like the Old School, and would honestly love to possess one. But no, they are not alike at all. It's not just that the components have aged, it's that they are absolutely completely different.
In my opinion you are making the best vintage synth demos on youtube! And they are very entertaining! I only recently got me a midimoog and this video was really eye opening! Thanks!!!
Dude! Those clicking and possiby loosey goosey keys can be fixed. The bushings underneath disintegrate over the years. The bushings are available online and the job, while time consuming, is doable by someone with average mechanical skills. There is a video online that takes you through it step by step, including disassembly and reassembly. They also show you how to level uneven sitting keys. I did my 1977 Model D last year - the keyboard feels like butter and is wonderfully quiet. While I had it apart, I also bought a can of De-oxit, and cleaned all the pots, switches, and connections (including the pc board connections). My Mini now feels and sounds like it did when I got it new! Did cleanup jobs on my 1125 sample/hold and 1120 foot voltage pedals as well. Now I gotta do the same bushing job on my MicroMoog! Set of 44 bushings was $44 plus s/h and they came prelubricated.Otherwise great video! You got some nice sounding patches going on. Aren't the Mini's just one amazing instrument? While the Voyagers are also nice axes, they just DON'T have the Model D sound or sonority.
This knocks the socks off most Mini Moog demos and it is great to see no effects. I will double my efforts with my Voyager Old School. A few Numan sounds in there also. : )
Robert Moog was very good at programming the sound of clacking keys into his synths. Its a nice touch and bravo to you for posting such a HQ recording to showcase the sounds of this expensive synth.
Thank you for that wonderful and Natural Demo👍 Everybody can hear the Power and Magic of the Mini Moog! I have ohne request - Can you give us the Sound settings at 5:40 for this amazing vowel effects? Thank you
Great Demo. Well done. Classic synth, Great thick warm bases, a sound and, character of it's own. I wonder, what the model B and C sounded like too. Thanks for posting. LOL .
I had the Beringer D for about 2 yrs and I I think I loved it to death, wanted that classic Minimoog sound as close as possible. But sold it I think the low note priority issue was my biggest pet peve.Might have to buy it again.
I had a bunch of RUSH albums as a kid and always wondered what a mini Moog is.It would always say that after Geddy Lee's name when it came to instruments
Now I know where they got some of the music from for some of those old 16mm educational movies they used to show in school when I was growing up in the 80's. LOL
***** Are you using a digicam with a built in condensor mic to make you videos please ? Or a digicam with a mic jack phono input (from your mixing desk) ? Ta, Paul
This synth was made in 1973. The key bushings need replacement. The synth sound you're hearing is recorded direct. The key-clicking sound you're hearing was picked up by the camera mic.
Very nice! You can just listen to the sound of this thing without really playing any music (altough, it helps of course). But I did miss some phat, low octave bass sounds in this video.
+AutomaticGainsay Unacceptable! lol.. :D You do the best synth videos! A comparison to a original Model D & a refresher course in your new style of tutorials would be nice.
@itstherubberduck On the minimoog there is a switch to make the 3rd oscillator an LFO. Just activate it and the frequency range of the oscillator drops.
@fender1000100 "Fat" is not the same thing as "possessing a huge bass." Moog basses are sought after for more than the fact that they are heavy in the low end.
@fender68. But that is not to say the Dx7 is totally useless. I actually own one original, bought it used. It has a fantastic keyboard feeling with aftertouch. And it's really sturdy, so it's pefect as a midi controller for me. Besides I bought it for about $100 (in Swedish currency). The ony downside is the midi velocity of 100 range instead of 128, but I have fixed that in cubase anyway with velocity compession of 9/7.
I wonder how well the MiniMoog can do a harmonica sound? And by harmonica, I don't mean the sophisticated sound of Stevie Wonder's chromatic harmonica (that which the Yamaha DX7 did so excellently), but rather the common diatonic harmonica we hear in blues and '60s-'80s rock 'n roll.
@Spaghettaboutit I think using a compressor would work. It's one of the sacrifices you have to make for using analog live! Volume is another aspect of synthesis, and if you practice the sounds you're going to use live beforehand, you get a sense of what you're going to need to do when you set up the patch live. That's how I do it! But I tend to be somewhat purist about analog stuff, and you probably don't need to go to that level of effort!
For expressively modulating the VCF frequency... You can do it with the wheel, but I always liked the velocity control better. Still, the Minimoog is one of the greatest synths of all time.
LOVE IT - my reissue keys don’t do that. Can you link up to your setting diagrams or a general sense of what you play or just take a screen shot overhead every time you switch over- thanks.
I recognize the sound from 9:10, it was used in the very intro/beginning of a Steve Miller song I can't remember the title of for the life of me! LOL I keep thinking it's Jet Airliner or Rockin Me.
