It is so sad that society does not allow physicians to be human too. No one should feel alone and helpless in their struggles. There is help and there is treatment and freedom from mental illness. This is a great much needed story. Awareness is important

I work in an outpatient clinic and last year one of our patients who happened to be a physician took his own life leaving a wife and four kids behind. It was the most disturbing thing I had ever heard in my life. Behind the ‘’MD” was a regular guy who just couldn’t fight his demons anymore 😔

The fact he cares that much means he is exactly the kind of doctor we the people NEED. CRITICALLY. There are some very cruel and callous doctors and nurses who are really don't care enough about massive mistakes they make

I worked for an emergency doctor, he didn’t seem himself , was very quiet and staring into nothing quite a bit. I asked him if he was ok, he said yes he was fine. I just sat quietly and was there for him, he eventually told me a very obese man had come to the ER and couldn’t breathe. He tried and tried to intubate him but couldn’t get the tube down no matter how many times he and his colleges tried. He was in tears, felt so heart wrenchingly guilty , had he tried everything, what if they had done this, what if they had tried that. He felt it was his fault entirely, it was his job to save people and he had failed. We talked for a long time and I hope it helped in some small way but you could still see it affected him for a long time after. Even though he was an amazing emergency doctor who had a great ability to diagnose even obscure illnesses, was sought after by many hospitals, it was the first time he lost a patient that he was sure would have lived if he had only.......... it tore him apart inside and made him doubt himself.

That’s evidence of something much deeper. Logically, this physician probably knew he was fighting an almost impossible uphill battle. The patients body was not compatible with life. I think it has a bit to do with his success in his career up until that point, that he really thought he could save anyone and when he couldn’t, he shouldered all of the blame. It’s a very dark side of the “god complex” and I don’t say that to degrade this doctor at all. It is just a fact of the profession. The routine saving of lives can trick you into believing that you can control death, because 9 times out of 10, you can.

@@saysHotdogsthanks for this. I’m applying for the LPN nursing program and I recently got my CNA certification and CPR certificate. I decided to travel to South Korea to relax after my excruciating semester study. I was in the Itaewon Halloween event in Korea where 154 young people died from cardiac arrest due to the crowd surge. I witnessed all the dead bodies on the ground and two young women was being revived and fighting for their lives. I was so mad that the paramedics were so distracted and in a panic mode that they failed to give a woman an AED. I don’t speak Korean and I know that they’re more experienced and professional than me. I wanted to step up and speak up. I was blank and guilty the entire night and locked myself for 2 days.

Thank you for shedding a light on those we respect, trust and put our lives in their hands.
Firstly I would like to send HUGE CONDOLENCES TO THOSE WHO HAVE LOST TO SUICIDE.
Secondly I would like to thank Alex and his wife for sharing their story and wish them ALL the best. Alex is very much STILL struggling at the time of this recording as is his beautiful wife.
I hope and pray as a family you can ALL make it through this terrible time of your life and I thank you Alex for NOT succeeding, your wife found you for a reason, your time isn't up, you have so much to live for and a story heartbreaking and all that MAY save many a life, I am sure your speaking up already has saved lives.
I myself (a medic) at the age of 29 and pregnant with the last of my 4 children, lost my father who was only 48, to suicide. My mother then 49 found his deceased body and I stumbled upon the situation literally minutes after. My parents were in the funeral industry (prior to that mum was a nurse), so dad did his best to suicide nearly.. I know that may sound a tad weird, ok a lot weird, but he'd seen it all and didn't want to leave a mess, or as little mess as possible behind.
    He succeeded.
We knew dad was struggling, but not to this extent. Sadly the ripple effect has made me an only child with my sister taking her life, 11 years later at the age of 38, like dad leaving 2 daughters behind.
My mother has had too many to count attempts (she lost her father in a work accident at the tender age of 13, she had only just turned 13 and was the eldest of living siblings).
Dad's death turned our world upside down in a way that sadly, to understand it, is to have lived it.
Our members of society who are there when WE need it most, often see the best and worst in humanity from Dr's and all fellow medico's, to Funeral Directors, Pathologists, Police - especially who are Gods gift when needed YET sadly too often abused when trying to carry out their job and protect the community, Ambo's, Firies, SES workers, our Defense Forces, even Veterinarians ALL OFTEN FLY UNDER THE MENTAL HEALTH RADAR... and it is NOT OK.
The suicide epidemic, globally, is on the rise (along with rampant drug use) our MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ARE BREAKING AT THE SEAMS - GLOBALLY...
The stigma of mental health NEEDS to be addressed, respected and PRIORITISED.
EDUCATION IS A MUST. Without education which does include what society deems as those who are better off financially as better than the homeless person, who both OFTEN have similar if not overlapping stories yet one is elevated in society while the other is kicked to the gutter and essentially "worthless".
What many DON'T realise is MANY of these so called worthless gutter people ARE from "influential and perfect" backgrounds. Depression and Suicide are non discriminatory illnesses and behaviours that can and do devour anyone and anything in its path.
The other unnoticed statistic is HOW OFTEN SUICIDE IS SUCCESSFUL, that good old "fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree" resulting in death determination, is often a suicide done in a manner so as not to stigmatize a family. . Single vehicle, single tree, single occupant and single fatality.
Suicide is covered up way too often and shouldn't be. The only saving grace with covering it up is the "ripple effect" along with the family and friends having to live a lifetime of "if only's, what if's, why, feeling lost and unloved, depression" the whole experience.
Sadly I have not only lost my father and sister, but a 24 y.o cousin who split with her partner, moved in with us, went around to her ex's and had what started out an amicable discussion, resulted in an argument and my cousin took her life, her death preceded my sister, and our most recent was a 17 y.o tragically took his life.
We also have had multiple attempts familial attempts within the family.
MENTAL HEALTH IS SERIOUS, DOCTORS (& other high risk workers) DEAL WITH TOO MUCH OF THIS AND GLOBALLY WE SHOULD HAVE MANDATORY EXTENSIVE DEBRIEFING, RETREATS AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE NON JUDGEMENTAL HELP.
Oh and physicians SHOULD NOT be allowed to have things exempted from their medical records. It's their life, and is too precious to leave things exempt from such important files.
My love and condolences to anyone reading this, who has lost to suicide and to those currently fighting suicide (within yourself or your family) please know you're not alone and reach out .
Tomorrow is a new day, and suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem that results in hurt and indescribable pain to your family and friends.
    Peace.

I worked in a hospital for 18 years, and I do feel compassion for physicians like this. However, the overwhelming number of physicians I came into contact with do not care enough to get depressed over the patient's health. It's a job no different than flipping burgers to many of them, it's a way to make a living and pay for the things they do enjoy doing. I even had one doctor tell me he stopped getting emotional about patients because it would burn him out, so he did a 180 and didn't care at all. He said as long as he did enough to not get a lawsuit against him, that was fine with him. It's the main reason I got out of the healthcare industry, the total lack of care and concern for the patient. Do just enough to stay out of trouble. Sad reality.

As a disabled patient that has had horrible experiences with doctors that seem so apathetic it's become a type of mental illness process on its own, I think it's an utter Tragedy our finest and most compassionate caregivers get bullied or broken by a clearly damaging system, while patients suffer and lose the battle of haveing life alongside the fallen. In the Hippocratic Oath it says to take care of your own health as a doctor... the AMA should be encouraging all doctors to not be penalized for mental health issues or even addictions they need treatment for, making sure all interns get required sleep, nutrition and time off the shifts they work are inhumane and dangerous for patients as well, doctors should not be penalized for being compassionate or encouraged not to be or to be unfeeling robots focused on 'the numbers' only. I myself am seriously considering leaving this country because medicine in the US is no longer a safe place for the disabled community, I can testify to the truth of that...

As long as my physician is taking care of their mental health, It doesn’t matter what their diagnosis is. Because that’s what health care is for… like…. If they had a cold, I don’t want them to come to work, but once they’re okay, then it’s non of my god damn business that they were ever sick in the first place.

Medical schools / hospitals could teach spiritual principles that allow for imperfection, forgiveness, the importance of self-care etc...science alone cannot handle what it means to be human. Perfectionism, in and of itself, is an illness that needs treatment. Perfectionism is not the way the universe is wired...it goes against natural law. I read a great quote last week from a near death experiencer: "Love oneself as you do others..."

If a person is a soldier, police person or is in any dangerous field maybe defying the odds of death and even after incurring injury and trauma that person might double down and feel renewed. However, if a person is a doctor, their lives have been spent on keeping bodies healthy. So if a doctor's body fails in any way he likely experiences the opposite. Nobody is their job. And everybody has their breaking point. 100% of people that have ever existed and will ever exist would commit suicide if they experienced enough pain and for long enough.

Yes but most importantly issues like workload, long working hours and lack of support structure to reduce errors these the important preventive measures far more important than removing mental health questions from the licensing process, which of course should be to protect patients from unstable doctors that shouldn't conflict with providing treatment and support to struggling doctors without stigma and allowing them to go back to practice once they are in good shape for their sake and their patients sake.

  • @beckyweaver5981

I don’t really see this as a “mental health issue.” These doctors are upset and feeling badly about not being able to save someone. That’s not “mental illness,” it’s CONSCIENCE. Sometimes just not wanting to be here any more is not related at all to depression or mental illness. It just seems the logical choice when your suffering is overwhelming. I’m sure many overdoses were intentional as well but we’ll never know. At least the overdoses won’t be judged like the suicides will.

Southern Bella Donna I think you have misunderstood me. I do not doubt what you felt about the doctors you have encountered and I am not certainly not trying to undermine you at all. The point I was making is that not all doctors are the same and so I wouldn’t want anyone to think that all doctors are motivated by the need to make money, even if I thought the doctors I had met were like that. There are millions of doctors all over the world and so I wouldn’t want anyone to think that what I thought, applied to all doctors. As I believe this would be grossly unfair. Also, given the nature of depression and suicidal ideation, a person may present in one way but you would never know how they may ( or may not be struggling) at a deeper level. For they ( just like you and I, perhaps despite our differences in opinion) may never show in our jobs, the depths of our despair, This is not an attack on you, I am merely contributing to a conversation. And we can can agree to differ. The bottom line is anyone can feel suicidal and this video reflects the feelings of a doctoring the depths of despair. Surely we can agree that mental health is a complex issue that can and may well affect each and every one of us at some time in our lives. And I hope that I will feel compassion from those around me rather than them judging me in relation to the job I do , or any other (arguably) discriminating factor.

My doctor once had to take a break from His job due to having a breakdown of His wife leaving and betraying Him by Her running off with the kids into another country!

There are some doctors who care about patients, but there are some who don't. I experienced that some years ago when I was admitted in a hospital. The doctor on the floor passed by my room two days. On the third day I confronted him. He did not want to treat me. The only reason why he did was because two other women in the room witnessed his behavior remarked about it.
I am not saying that all doctors are like him, but I have seen where a lot of them are not nice. I don't feel sorry for those physicians who commit suicide. I do feel sorry for the caring physicians who do. May they RIP.

As someone who has almost died more than once due to the mental health impairment of physicians causing severe life-threatening medical harm to my body, I have great concern that you want to stop asking the questions from the state boards about mental health of new candidates or renewals. If a physician says they do have a history of mental illness, they need to have an objective and unbiased psychiatric evaluation for safety to patients and appropriate mental health care before being allowed to practice. If they have become impaired while practicing, they need to be put on sabbatical until they are mentally well enough to practice. This is how patients with mental health concerns are treated. We as patients are even forced and coerced into the mental health system when we do not even have mental health issues, having our basic human rights violated. Both physicians and patients should be evaluated and treated if necessary in a respectful manner to make sure they are safe to themselves and others if symptomatology is present. Physicians should not be treated differently than their patients. Yes, the stigma needs to be removed, however these double standards contribute to physicians not seeking or getting the mental health help they need.

That "help" is what caused several suicide attempts by me just to get away from abusive doctors and brain damaging drugs. Needless to say, it only got worse until I literally even gave up on giving up. I literally fear treatment more than hell itself, as I will gladly send myself straight to Satan just to avoid doctors. I'd even suck Satan's dick for an eternity if he made it so the entire medical and psychiatric community offed themselves simultaneously.

Kota Dagnino i disagree. I believe pre-emptive destruction can be quite useful. For example, if there's a building that could collapse, damaging property, injuring people, and polluting the surrounding area with toxic debris, is a controlled demolition in order to prevent such catastrophe not a better option? Or perhaps there was someone who we knew for a fact would kill as many people as possible, wouldn't it be better to kill them to prevent the hundreds of deaths their existence would cause? Destruction also breeds creation. For all we know that thing we are so sad to see destroyed was only destroyed to make room for something infinitely better. What about the dinosaurs? Would you rather be eaten by a T.Rex, or are you glad they and other species were destroyed, allowing us humans to exist?

Yes your profession, and medicine in general, is extremely challenging, and you agree with me in saying no one in the field is weak. But neither are the people above, and you should know that above everyone. Some people are predisposed to mental health or place a great burden of guilt upon themselves when they have ethics, morals, and are particularly caring and exceptional doctors. In my experience, as a person surrounded by a family of doctors - esp the twin of one - suicide doesn't determine a weak person or "heart" in medicine nor any other career, field, and walk of life.
