- In our first vlog of 2022, Martin shows off our new purchase - a 2021 Renault Zoe Riviera. Only 300 were available in the UK (2 of which are now with us ready for sale).
It features a lot of new technology, handles tighter, and build quality has been significantly improved.
How does it stack up to the BMW i3 though? These two cars are aimed at different markets but have come much closer in price on the second-hand market, so are often cross-shopped. The i3 is definitely the sportier option, but the new Zoe is an overall great package with comfortable suspension, can seat 5, has a big boot, and you can expect 200 miles of range if you drive carefully.
Hello I am a new BMW I3 owner from the US and I came across your channel and i watch a quite a few of your videos. And i enjoy them all.keep up the good work and thank you
Martin, another excellent review.
Your on screen person today is so much more relaxed and I can see the change from a year ago where your static camera piece is engaging and your selfi stick moments are less so. Your tech chat remains fully engaged with the viewer.
I did look at the Zoe and have driven the 50. I would buy one but it’s a step down from my V40 D3 which has all the safety AND tech toys. The I3 remains my key interest as it is compact it has the safety and tech toys. Thanks for pointing out that ACC is not on all models.
I had not seen that Zoe NCAP was zero. I was surprised that Renault had missed its presentation. By-the-way Chrysler with its seven seat mini bus did the same thing in 1990, but that did not stop sales.
Another very interesting video Martin. I guess it is horses for courses. One feature of the i3 which is often overlooked is it’s terrific manoeuvrability and tiny turning circle so it is easy to spin around in one go.
I'm a fan! Your videos are so so infornative and I'm definitely purchasing an i3 or a zoe from you 😊 in future see you soon
Thank you very much for the nice video. I just have opted for the i3.
A very nice comparison between the two cars and a nice review as well! I like how you tested the automatic parking function "for the sake of science" 🤣 👍
I tried to use the automatic parking in my i3 a few times my self. Honestly, it takes a lot of time, it often doesn't recognize a suitable parking spot, and if it does recognize one, it can only do the side parking manoeuvre....(or can it also rear park like the 3 and 5 series? ).. So basically I never use that feature.
Also I agree with you that the adaptive cruise control on the i3 is often annoying and disengages when it feels upset by headlights from oncoming traffic, rain, sun... or when the windshield fogs up locally in front of the camera, due to temperature differences. But otherwise I love my i3. 😊
With regard to shopping bags, I use a short dog lead around the head rests just keep the bags from falling over.
We have a 135GT which is our 2nd Zoe we love the car. The range matches our VW ID3+. So much more room in the back seats of a Zoe compared to a Kona for instance & much cheaper.
One clear advantage of the 2021 ZOE over the older 2015? model year i3 is the telematics modules. The older i3 has an obsolete 3G compatible module. In the US, 3G cellular is no more. So, pre-conditioning (and other features) from the mobile app no longer works.
BMW dealer sez no upgrade path, but perhaps there is, albeit likely to be prohibitively costly, given the relatively minor benefits.
This is a very good point. We are starting to get the questions of the connectivity upgrade more and more often, so it's something we will look into...
I can’t seem to find any official info on the (R135) S Edition but the spec seems pretty good.
hey is that the R50 without side airbags.. Safty issue is for sideway impact
I understand the direction that Euro NCAP has decided to move but it does not align with my own views or needs. During the transition when many cars still show makings based on the prior regime, it no longer offers me a way to differentiate between the cars I might wish to buy.
Gooooood comparison. Dealbreaker on the Zoe are for me: front wheel drive, no heated seats, no one pedal driving, no active (liquid) battery cooling. Good points are the heatpump, braking assist and larger battery.
Fair points but the ZOE does in fact have active battery cooling. It’s not liquid-cooled like the i3, but the AC can send cool air over the battery to control the temperature.
@@wiselyauto you are correct, but the issue will arise while charging in the summer. The i3's active liquid cooling will keep the charging power constant up to 80%, whereas the Zoe's air cooling will not be able to match it since air has a 20 times lower thermal conductivity than water. I'm sure the Zoe is a great EV for some people, but I appreciate the engineering priorities of the i3.
Regardless of which, drivers shifting away from cars running on dinosaur juice can only be a good thing.
A heat pump is an option for the non-rex i3. I paid extra for the heat pump on my 120Ah i3. Not sure how much benefit it provides but wasn't that expensive to add it as an option.
The biggest let down with the 'second generation' ZOE is that while the tech and interior are massively improved, the exterior design is pretty much unchanged. While the LEAF got bigger exterior design changes, it too is clearly just a heavy facelift rather than an all new model.
Are the Zoe batteries rented, or owned by purchase of the car?
This may depend by region, but in the UK Renault decided to drop the battery leasing on all of the new ZOEs with the 52kWh pack.
The Zoe fared very poorly in the NCAP tests, zero score I believe, therefore not an option for my family.
This is often glossed over but it is huge! I’ve seen the NCAP tests for this car and it didn’t score very well in practically all of the areas tested. The ZOE was being heavily marketed on lease deals in November last year - I signed up for one and but for a weird quirk of fate, I’d have delivery of one on 4 year lease. With 2 young children, I’d have been gutted if I had.
