Ernest Happel, Rinus Michels and other players like Johan Neeskens made this possible. There was a good team, good trainers and a good concept.

There was nothing secret about the Dutch game. Wim Van Hanegem said that before each match there were few changes and hardly any tactical talk. Play football and work hard was the message.

A fantastic player but he learned total FOOTBALL from the great JOCK STEIN who coached him and many others including FERGIE back in the 70s every summer

That way of playing, "total football" is the most difficult system to play. All players need to be able to attack and defend when in ball possesion and when not in ball posession. It's base is every postion should be interchangeable, so attack player should be able to defend and vice versa. This means that when in ball possesion the left back can become a leftwinger creating a man more situation, also the ball is given to players who initiate the pass in free space and a third man is allready there to assist, also in the free spaces, in an ever moving forward midfield, touching the ball just once. Timing is of the essence!!
Cruyff had build that way of playing in his first period at Barcelona and he needed players that could be tough as nails, but also play tecnical decent football, the Basque players Zubizareta on goal, Bakero and Begiristain fitted to that description as on wich he build the dreamteam combined with true creative football stars like Laudrup and Stoichkov. He proved that his way of building a team could come to the sucses in 1990-1994, that Barca had not experienced in years. Special thanks to the Basque players through the years.
Every team within Barca started to play in the same system and it culminated and develloped to a Barcelona team that managed by Rijkaard/ Neeskens/ ten Cate and later by Guardiola to reach that high level in the 2008 - 2016 period. The "tikkie takka" play of Xavi, Iniesta, Messi ..the best club team football ever!!
Cruyff's influence and importance at Barcelona and in the history of the game of football can not be overstated. His legacy will continue as he influenced many top coaches in the past and of today...

There was nothing the Dutch did that Brazil in 1970 or Poland in 1974 didn’t do, except play with a high offside line to squeeze the space their opponents had to play in. It was more a case of a group of great players coming together at the same time who knew each other’s game well and played as a team. Once they were all gone Holland disappeared for a decade.

At least he could cross a ball, I don’t see many wingers who can not do that nowadays.

Agreed 💯%. Most of the wingers nowadays just cut inside and make the side pass
