It seems like all the softwares promoted as being usable for DITA are expensive. what low cost software do people use to write DITA?

I found the same thing. XML Editors may be justifiable for a full time writer. But for someone or a team of people who maintains some technical documentation as a small portion of their full time job, the XML editor landscape is ridiculously expensive. However, I have found that you can side step most of this expense by doing the following:
      1) Install the free editor Visual Studio Code
      2) Add the Free XML extension by RedHat
      3) Install DITA-OT
      4) Configure the XML extension to point to the OASIS XML Schema catalog in the root of the DITA-OT toolkit
      5) Add snippets to VS Code that automatically create .ditamap and .dita files with the and root element namespaces as well as other commonly used DITA constructs.
These steps should make your authoring environment far more efficient with both code completion and descriptions of tags when you hover over the XML elements. These steps on their own will not try to be WYSIWYG as an editor like OXYGEN approximates. But even after this, your document format from DITA-OT probably needs some one time customizations for your entire organization that will apply to all of your outputs moving forward. That has its own learning curve. Fortunately or unfortunately there seems to be a cottage industry of specialists that make their living having this prerequisite knowledge to know how to do this quickly. The work is straight forward but you likely can't justify the cost of learning to do it yourself if only customizing it once or rarely. This makes it an ideal scenario to use a consultant for IF you are going to stick with DITA. The document customization work if you are interested amounts to adding XSLT transformations, writing Java extensions, and adjusting the CSS or other formatting of HTML, XSL-FO, or whatever other format you target.
As for adding previewing to the above authoring experience, you can likely preview the HTML within VS Code or use Zathura (over WSL2 on Windows) for PDFs. For example, create a .ditamap file for each section you may be authoring and have that rebuilt when your files change. Of course, all of this customization is what tools like Oxygen appear to promise out of the box. I have not used Oxygen.
DITA is an amazing concept. But it is not an inexpensive implementation in terms of time, knowledge, ... But with the right tools and time or consultants, you may find it finally offers a great way to reuse your work across documents and formats.

Thanks, Josh for the great videos!
Hi! You offer greatly usable knowledge in a simplified manner to the new people in the field. Thanks for all this.
I am in the field of tech content writing for now and wanna switch to core tech writing like in the software documentation field.
So, I have a couple of related questions, please.
    1. Regarding Git and GitHub - Do tech writers need to work only with GitHub for writing documentation or does s/she need to know basic Git, too? Is Git also required for documentation writers for some basic functions? Or, is Git optional or even not required to learn and work with for this purpose?
    2. Do beginners need to learn API documentation, too, to enhance their usability and maximize the chances of getting hired. Or is API documentation something to be learned only after having some experience in software documentation?
    3. Please also tell me if a DITA XML author tool is good to learn for this purpose. How does it relate to GitHub? Please guide me so that I can decide on a couple courses from you.
Thanks in advance for your valuable insight.

I am a technical writer with a background in engineering. I was wondering how to leverage skills as a technical writer to pursue C-suite roles such as a Chief of Staff in a small tech startup.

I can't help but think a tutorial on something like Oxygen might be helpful.

While DITA itself doesn't perform NLP tasks directly, it can serve as a framework for preparing content that is subsequently processed by NLP components within a broader pipeline. This integration can enhance efficiency and consistency in managing and analyzing textual information.
