I used to think it was Bowser's face on the painting and I kept looking for him. :')
I think I saw some online theories that the fire was bowser's face, but it wasn't every confirmed (plus, I don't think it looks enough like him)

It's funny that you call what Mario makes a "laugh sounding scream", considering it's used as a laugh sound in one of the minigames of 64 DS.

This is one of those levels thar I think was greatly improved by mario 63 -- so much so that I played mario 63 before 64 as a kid (yes I'm young) and felt kinda let down by the original
