Your so right , melodies and harmonies, were what it was all about in the seventies , and sixties. Today the music, is gone downhill , at least we still love the music , of days gone by .
My mam used to play all her records on a Sunday morning while making the dinner and I was only about 5yr old and this song always stuck with me, so memorable
One of the most underrated songs of that mid '70s period. In an era when anything went chart wise in the UK, how this didn't make No.1 - let alone just graze the Top 10 is a mystery to me..
The bass player you mention is none other than the great, and shamefully underrated, Graham Knight. My compliments on your excellent judgement and appreciation of his fine musicianship. Graham remained in The Marmalade until 2010, and was, by then, the very last original member of the band. In fact, Graham was also part of the PRE-history of The Marmalade, being the bass player with Dean Ford and The Gaylords from 1965,. The Gaylords evolved into The Marmalade in 1966 when the band relocated from Glasgow to London. I understand Graham now lives in beautiful sunny Dorset where I hope he continues to enjoy a well deserved retirement.
What a pop masterpiece I ❤❤❤ this sing. The lead singer has a gorgeous voice absolutely brilliant. This was a top 10 hit in the UK but unfortunately it did not even crack the billboard top 40. It's number one in my. Heart forever❤❤❤
I always thought this song was by the Dooley’s it was such a surprise to find it was by Marmalade, the range of music they played was great. It’s a shame there is nothing as good as this out there now.
What does guy trying to do why is he called marmalade Dean Ford is Marmalade he should be a tribute act I spoke to John who does give great answers so honest he actually said to me that he agreed with me as he feels the same and Browden I think his surname just in case you were wondering who I spoke to I am fed up with people who tries to be another person but there’s only one Marmalade and that is DEAN FORD god bless missing you fly high until we meet again 🎤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@bredadalton3290 Sandy Newman is a great singer and actually sounds a lot like Dean Ford but I agree with you: Thomas McAleese(Dean Ford) was a superb front man and things were never the same in the Marmalade camp after he left but one has to give credit to the band for persevering and their 1977 album on Target was actually pretty good.
The brilliant Marmalade. ..I was lucky enough to see them live a few years ago at local 60's show here in Northern Ireland. .sang all their famous songs...great memories
@@CrankCase08 Not Quite. Drummer Alan Whitehead was also an original Marmalade member albeit joining the band in 1966. They traded as Dean Ford and The Gaylords between 1964 and 1965, went to England in 1966 and changed their name to The Marmalade by the time their first CBS single Its All Leading Up To A Saturday Night in mid 1966. Alan Whitehead was the only English man in the band. The other four were Scottish. In this clip you'll see both bass player Graham Knight and drummer Alan Whitehead and they both played on the 1977 album The Only Light On My Horizon Now. I like that particular album and new lead singer sounded very much like Dean Ford.

Indeed. RIP Dean (real name Thomas McAleese). A fine singer and an all-round decent guy who had an often difficult and challenging life in the years after he left The Marmalade but who worked hard and bravely to overcome his obstacles. The vocalist in this clip is not Dean who had left by this stage of the band's career. The singer here is Sandy Newman. By this time (1975) only Graham Knight and Alan Whitehead of the original - and best - Marmalade line-up remained. Dean, Pat Fairley and Junior Campbell had all departed. Sadly Pat and Dean have now died. Dean in 2018 (Los Angeles) and Pat in 2020 (also in Los Angeles). Incidentally, Sandy Newman has now been in The Marmalade continuously for longer than anyone (1975 - 2024). Almost fifty years. Back to Dean. He has the distinction of co-writing (with Junior Campbell) four of the original Marmalade's very best songs as follows: I See The Rain (No.23 in The Netherlands. Did not chart in UK, but should have. ) Reflections Of My Life (No 3 UK, No 10 US) Rainbow (No.3 UK, No 51 US) My Little One (No. 15 UK) A very proud record indeed as a co-songwriter.
Great song! I remember first hearing this song when I first learned how to swim during the summer of 1976. It was at a pool at the JCC in Trenton which had just opened up. I remember hearing this song along with "Afternoon Delight" by the Starland Vocal Band and "Get Closer" by Seals and Crofts. Great days in my life and great memroies!
Great track, the singer is the still very handsome Sandy Newman, still has great voice and still are touring as marmalade, their shows are brilliant and they are really funny, go and see them , like i do evey time i can. You wont be disappointed ❤❤❤❤
Didn't realise this was a Tony MacCaulay song. Have always loved it, and lots of his other songs. You are so right, brilliant writer of pop songs. The Fantastics spring immediately to mind.
Still love listening to Marmalade + a thousand other bands/groups..They have a single out called Los Angeles..Don’t know if it’s from an album..Very good.👌Boom Radio UK sometimes play it..
Re-discovered The Marmalade on here just by chance. How could I have forgotton about this terrific band ? So many memories sparked. ..........Janice Philpot...... where you are now I wonder. Such sweet memories.
What a beautiful song... You can be down and out and someone from nowhere can appear and and bring you back to life... But then after a few years you feel or believe your losing them... And you do... A terrible feeling... But better to of loved and lost.. Than to feel nothing special for anyone throughout your life.. And to remember that for a certain amount of time in your life you felt alive... Priceless... Great song marmalade..
Wow you can find anything on YT!! Didn't think anyone knew this song but me. 999 you are right. Spent many years as a radio dj listening to tone deaf PDs making decisions.
An old tune & well known Jeff, though can't fault your taste. The original band toured the dance halls of Scotland(& the rest of the country) in the 60s along with Love Affair, Amen Corner, Desmond Decker, Geno Washington plus many more, playing to crowds of only three to four hundred youngsters. Happy memories of the Cragburn dance hall in Gourock Scotland.

I love this song perfect description of my wonderful and beautiful fiancee and my feelings towards her So many classic 60s and 70s songs that tug on your heart strings
I never knew the name of this song and I used to sing 'country weekend' instead of until you came or until we kissed. . .thought the name of the song was country weekend. . and never realized it was The Marmalade . . . well that's not bad, only took me 47 years to find out... loved the song though
Did Abba write this ??. Wonderful sound. Great hook laden melody and harmonies. They can't make songs like this in the souless digital vacuous world we have today

Stop using underrated. We rated it back then 50 years ago. This standard was par for the course back then.
Rip dean such a amazing singer left us too soon❤❤
2023 and I still love this song and the marmalades since the song came out'60s and '70s their music gives a shiver down my back
Sounds so good after all these years. All over the radio in the summer of 1976.
I loved this song back in the 70s, (still do tbh). Lead singer has a fab voice. ❤🎼🎶🇬🇧

Marmalade getting a fresh hit in 1976 after 4 years absence from the charts. Sadly it was their last.
I have this single. It's just a pity that the sound take is not in stereo here which was already the rule in 1976.

A perfect pop song from start to finish. I particularly like the simple, but very effective synth string usage.
Love this song.A real classic.
and you NEVER hear it on the old timey radio or anywhere else for that matter.
Sandy Newman was/is a fine singer and has been the Marmalades Lead singer for over 40 years. Dean Ford was magnificent but Sandy is great also!

Yet again I have Ken Bruce on Radio 2's Pop master to thank for reminding Me of this Nice Tune from this Scottish Pop/Rock Band!.

Because it isn't that great. Very generic. No Dean Ford, you need more?
