Mahalia is the true Queen of gospel I have every song that she has ever sung and I simply adore her I don't want a choir to sing over me at my death it has been planned by me every song will be sung by her. I don't care for this new age gospel with the dancing and all that carrying on.
The Spirit of God lived in this woman. What a Saint for the Lord. It is so eerie that you can feel her passion in the songs that she song for the Lord. I don't mean in a bad way but even in watching this video you could literally feel what she was singing about and knew that she meant it. That is the Holy Spirit present. In all your ways acknowledge the Lord and He will dirct thy path. That is what Mahalia Jackson did. She was a mouthpiece for the Lord. Thank you for posting this video!
When I was a kid our family always used to listen to Mahalia sing on Christmas Eve. My mother would make popcorn balls and hot chocolate and we'd sit by the tree and listen ot Mahalia sing. This is one of my fondest childhood memories!
I was a 9yr old Maori girl growing up in NZ and I watched 'the lady in the sheet' every Sunday, I remembered being absolutely riveted to the screen she was an amazing part of my childhood.....and not so culturally distant if you've ever heard Maori hymns sung in 4 part harmonies....In the Upper Room has always moved me...I chose it for my partner's funeral - the only joyous moment of celebration at an otherwise dismal event
This is my absolute favorite of Mahalia's song. She's the best. God blessed her with such a beautiful voice, and she used it for His glory. She sang with such passion for her Lord.
U simply couldn't help but respect this great woman of God..such a class act..so anointed even in her attire..she'd turn her face in shame if she saw sme of this trash on stage now..she dressed like a pure holy woman of God..take note u young ladies u don't hve to be on stage showing everything from top to bottom..Mother Mahalia a true example of holiness

@KojiRecords You know a lot of people don't like those recording she did for Columbia. But they do show what a vast amount of musical genres she was able to tackle; blues; jazz, (near) opera, hymns, orchestral accompaniment, romantic songs, pop, swing.... Yes, her Apollo recordings were amazing in their own right, but you would not know what a Mahalia Jackson was if it had not been for Mahalia's great ability to take on Columbia and what they gave her to work with. And she did it!
from 1:42 til the end of the song: when she sings that part "down at the river of jordan callin on tha role!" it sounds like shes crying from her soul! it just put tears in my eyes knowing that she's not here today!
Many of the great songs of the church can be found in the "Gospel Pearls" Check out the gospel music stores or check online. I saw them as late as the 90's in stores.
Mahalia Jackson was a great BLUES singer who sang GOSPEL. When I was taught this in a college, I was skeptical, having only heard her washed out, banal performances on Columbia Records (i.e. the white Mahalia), which I detested hearing when I was a kid; however, I understood much later that Hallie was indeed the "World's Greatest Gospel Singer" when I heard her explosive recordings for Apollo Records (i.e. the Black Mahalia), which beg comparison to Hallie's favorite, the great Bessie Smith.
that's the true Mahalia.....she had to do these arrangements for good ol Amerikkka white audiences.but when she went to Europe.they wanted and got the real Black Hallie.man and she tore up those concert halls. but yes she first learned from Bessie, COGIC and Baptist chaches.
what's she saying at the end of the chorus? "when the river of jordan callin your roll?" or "while the river of jordan's comin around?" I can't understand her there and I LOVEEEE this song and I want to sing it right. If any of yall know, please post a response. Thanks.
@KojiRecords Thats true because Columbia only knew the white market at the time so Mahalia had do less Bessis Smith (BLACK) and more washed out (WHITE) no offence to anyone!

Love old time songs, especially Mahalia Jackson, down on my knees.
She was a gift from God to the world to tell from Him in such an impressive way, singing only for His glory. Thank you for this video!
There were queens of the gospel and kings of the Gospel but only one world's greatest gospel singer Mahalia Jackson

Shout out to the late Mildred Falls on the piano.
Please post "He's Sweet I Know" from this same segment. Thanks!!!
Cmon choir
I do not appreciate that Hallie's pianist is not shown on this footage while the other 2 muscians can be visibly seen.
KojiRecords It’s as if Mildred was invisible.
