  • Classic blues this week and before the silage season gets into full swing a bit of late spring cultivation.
First off is a lovely Ford 8240 turbo ploughing up in the fells. With bright blue skies and a lovely backdrop the Ford and it’s Kveneland Mod-E 4-furrow ploughing for the planting of new grass leys looked a picture while the 6-cylinder engine turbo whistle soundtrack through the straight pipe especially up the hills was the icing on the cake!
However I nearly missed out (it was almost finished when I landed there) as on the way there I spotted a New Holland 7840 carrying out some late drilling and had to stop to get some video footage and photos. Travelling very lightly on its dual wheels the really tidy 7840 and it’s Reco Sulky combi drill (couldn’t catch the brand of power harrow, anyone fancy a guess?) was making a fine job of planting spring barley seed and when I passed a week later I seen it had all sprouted.
Also in there is the farms Ford 4600 that had been loading the hopper but unfortunately I didn’t have time to film it doing so. Thought it might be a good idea to combine both operations and ‘40’ series Fords in one video so I did! Just like a supermarket deal, buy one, get one free!
    Filmed in Cumbria, May 2024

Hard to beat a classic Ford and it’s great to see them still working 30 years on from when they were new! Many thanks as always, cheers David.

Good evening David and what a cracking video to brighten up this wet weather we have this week. Nice to see the change of scene to the blues and as you say, the wonderful sound of the Ford 8240 turbo is music to my ears. It's always tougher lifting an old grass ley, but the Kveneland was well shined up and the combination was taking it all in its stride. Brought back good memories of the last time I ploughed, which was back in 1981 with a 1977 Ford 6700 with Q Cab and a Ransomes TS 2 furrow reversible with manual trip for reversing the plough. As much as I loved ploughing, one bad memory was if you were sitting the wrong way on slightly sloping ground when your tripped it, it would not complete the full cycle and you were left with the plough in a horizontal position and me making the air blue! The 7840 and Reco Sulky combi drill was as you say running very lightly with almost no compaction being noticeable at all. As for the power harrow, not a clue and I will use my crap eyesight and poor memory as my excuse 😂. Nice seeing the old 4600 still earning its keep too. Thanks for another wonderful video. Cheers Fraser.

And a good evening to you Fraser. Oh yes I think we all need cheering up as like you the weather up here in Cumbria has been absolutely horrible these last few days and yet the weekend just past we were bathed in sunshine so I’m pleased I took advantage of it and went out with my camera! (videos to follow over the next couple of weeks) Oh what an engine note that 8240 turbo has, music to my ears too! Yes tough work ploughing up old pastures, both tractor and plough need to be in tiptop condition! That sounds a good combination, can’t remember the last time I seen a Ford 6700? Well I can, it was around here in about 1979 (I was 16 and thought what an impressive looking machine) Ha I can just picture you, blue tractor, blue plough and a few choice blue words! Yes again the NH 7840 is a lovely tractor and considering it’s a 6-cylinder machine it is very light on its feet, surprisingly what a difference dual wheels make in spreading the weight. I think the power harrow is possibly a Lemken but can’t be sure, my eyesight is still ok (with the help of Specsavers opticians!) but not that good to make out the decals. Yes Ford 4600 still a handy and useful tractor, the farm has 2-3 3-cylinder Fords and every one of them is kept busy. I’m so pleased you enjoy my videos Fraser, makes it all worthwhile driving to the farms and wandering around the fields in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside taking photos and videos but I would happily do that everyday of the week. Take care my friend, always a delight to hear from you. Cheers, David.

You’re welcome Fraser. I enjoy your feedback too, always look forward to our conversations, I love my farm machinery (as I have done from a young boy) and it’s so heartwarming that someone such as yourself takes an interest in the same subject. I can well imagine it’s not easy being on your own, I had a similar situation for years until I met my wonderful partner and I’d be lost without her now. It’s such a beautiful area round here, I know a good deal of it but there’s always somewhere or something new to discover. Hopefully I can keep bringing those discoveries to the screen for you and others to enjoy. Kind regards, David

Tidy tractors, good tractors the 40 series until they start going wrong. The early white roof ones have the internal solenoids, and and are prone to gearbox problems when the hours start getting high

Yes really good tractors David, one of the best ranges Ford ever made. I didn’t know about those problems but I suppose every tractor when it starts to age can develop fault’s although these two have been pretty reliable. Cheers, David.
