The film was a milestone. Mahatma Gandhi was revered figure in India till the release of the film (he still is) but he remained an enigma, a father figure, a national icon. Never like a bro or friend like Azad, bhagat singh or Patel or Nehru. But his portrayl in the film brought his real life story, his traumas in the open for everyone. Generations of 80s, 90s learnt about Gandhi more from this film as compared to our entire text books, film division documentary, govt archives put together.

Yes my friend, every human being will respond the same way as you have told. But these people were trained by gandhi himself in the strict discipline of satyagrah, which at times takes a lifetime to learn & execute. satyagrah awakens your mind and gives you control over ulterior passions. That is my personal opinion.

This is not the scene of actual Salt Satyagraha by Gandhi. This is Darshana Salt Satyagraha that took place in May 1930 after Gandhi's arrest for his Salt Satyagraha on 6 April 1930. Darshana Salt Satyagraha was led by Sarojini Naidu and Abbas Tayyabji. The journalist was Webb Miller, an American journalist whose report on the event brought international criticism for the British government policy in India.

In regimes that for the most part are not known for blatant, ruthless and merciless state-sponsored crackdowns.
Non-violence doesn't and/or won't work a lot of cases like Most recently Libya, Syria, North Korea, probably Saudi Arabia, a lot of African countries
More historical examples are Ceausescu's Romania, of all the countries where Soviet-style Communism fell peacefully, Romania was the sole exception.
The history of the French, American and Russian revolutions and their various points of when non-violence were no longer options are well-known and well-documented.
In some cases, violence is the only way

    • @hdbrot

@@chrismc410 It still works, doesn’t it? If the regime is known for blatant, ruthless and merciless state-sponsored crackdowns, then the threat of them having to kill the the majority of the population is quite a turn-down since the elite just can not run the state alone. If the revolutions Libya or Syria hadn‘t become violent, on the insurgent side maybe/probably because of various Islamic extremists, they could have had a better chance to not fall into the chaos, which they eventually did, or do you think otherwise?

Then Gandhi would have been forced to fast once more, for your aggressions?
That hardly seems like the wise approach Gandi tried to inspire.
The reason why his methods worked as they did. Is because the people of Britain read the newspapers.
Take your point of agreement with these parts:
"British policeenforcers kill 1000 unarmed protesters"
"India's reply to aggressions: Walks camly towards salt factory, no violence administered by the protesters"
That was headliness that made stomachs turn

If it was any power except the British or most Western countries except Nazi Germany or certain eastern countries like Imperial Japan or the Soviet Union under Stalin the same people who read said newspapers wouldn't give it a second thought as they and most knew those countries' leaders and governments are known to be extremely brutal and led by extremely ruthless people with no conscience or guilt whatsoever and would expect them to kill 1000 or even 10,000 unarmed protesters and their families without a second thought.

It’s quite hard to tell who did disgrace themselves here more: The Indians for thus losing lordship over India or the Indians by thus driving out the English; for normally countries are to be delivered from foreign oppression by great battle victories like the Scottish one at Bannockburn. But to be driven out of India by protests, hunger strikes and tax boycotts proves that the English were mentally incompetent to rule, for such a thing could never ever happen to imperial folk like the Romans.

I couldn't stand idly by and allow innocents to be beaten like that. My conscience and morals won't allow it. The PSL and S&W Model 59 9x19mm Luger/Parabellum would be put to very good use. Let's see how lead/steel filled sticks fare against 7.62x54R and 9x19mm Luger/Parabellum. I think those guards would back off after two or three of those guys shot dead. Definitely not in line of Gandhi's beliefs but i was always taught to fight and/or do extreme violence on behalf of myself, family and those who cannot fight for themselves. Lived my life behind it.
Not one of those stick guys will have lived if they hit those people in my presence. Any harm to those indians there would have resulted in rounds sent downrange to the guards. Leaders first. After 3 or more them shot dead, they might get the message. There is a time for nonviolence and a time for violence.
