One of the most underrated players in the league. I remember the first time I saw him in a game I thought "are they using a sixth lineman?" then i searched his name up and saw fb. I was shocked
10:42 I love that term "positionless football" to describe the 49ers offense. Part of what makes their system so effective is that massive versatility of their skill players like Juszczyk. In their typical 21-personnel package of Juszczyk, Kittle, Aiyuk, Deebo, and now CMC, they combine 2 elite rushers, 4 elite receivers, and 4 elite blockers into the one group, and all 5 of them can at least be some level of threat in all three roles. They can run virtually any play, to anywhere, out of any arrangement of those players.
This is what the future of modern teamsport is. In the end you are better off with players that can play their role very well and can also play on an okayish level in other roles than with worldclass players on their positions who are shit at everything else. This has been a trend in almost all ball games, like basketball, soccer etc... now football is adapting to it as well.
If you like watching that stuff, look at what Arthur Smith could be cooking for the Falcons this season. He has a gang of big time runners, his 2 best receivers are tall and pretty athletic and signed back one of his old fave TEs from years ago in Jonnu Smith who could do some running and pass catching duties. Many of the wide zone wizards and creative run schemers like Stefanski are crafty in utilizing their 'bigger' receivers/runners as blockers. OCs who have access to a running QB probably will have more creative options to use receivers as lead blockers.
@@JDBass36 Wasn't he their primary rusher, though? That's not what I think about when I think "true fullback." To me, a true fullback, at least by the modern definition (not the 1940s definition where they were the fullback because they were all the way back in the formation) is one that has primarily a blocking role, and that's not really my perception of Alstott.
@@JDBass36 He was more of a larger halfback than fullback tbh. The way he was utilized was more like the bus or Jamal Lewis. His position was just fullback.
he was basically just used like a fullback, last one i can think of is lorenzo neal, the reason every hb he ever played with got at least 500 to 800 extra yards. i think the 49ers fb has been very good for a while for fb.
As an old school Big 10 three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust fan of I-formation smash mouth football, I am very glad to see a resurgence of the use of the under appreciated fullback!!!
It’s because teams are realizing, there is still a shortage of high end QBs, so not everyone is going to be able to pass it 70% of plays. Plus with LBs getting smaller, it’s a great time to out physical them in the run game.
Bill Walsh when asked about the most important aspect of his pass offense: "It's the fullback. The fullback is really the critical part of our passing game, because he's the one that's the most difficult to handle. So you'll see year in, and year out our fullback catch more passes out of anyone in our ball club." This was a gem of a video, and I appreciate you spotlighting what has become maybe my favorite position on offense even if it's usage has depleted in the last couple of decades. Glad that it might be making a comeback in various new iterations. A lot of people gave Kyle Shanahan venom when he retained Kyle Juszczyk on another contract, but I simply smiled from ear to ear.
I always figured as defenses went all in on speed and lightweight setups to counter the spread offense, eventually somebody would counter that with brawn and weight and eventually the fullback would be reborn.
Alec Ingold, fullback for the Dolphins and formerly the Raiders, is an absolute athletic freak. He went to my high school, and was the hardest working guy you'd ever meet. First one to practice and film, last one to leave. It didn't matter if you were a starter or a backup or a backup's backup, he was always pushing everyone in the weight room. Some real leadership shit. As a sophomore, he played running back and rushed for more than 1000 yards and 22 touchdowns. He moved to quarterback as a junior, and still was elite. He passed for 1427 yards and 13 scores, adding 860 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He added even more as a senior, and we outscored teams by an average of 40 points his senior year, mainly through Ingold. He went to Wisconsin, got moved to fullback, bulked up like 40 pounds, and not only excelled at running like in high school, but was a great blocker too. He went undrafted in 2019, yet made the Raiders roster by the season. This is his 5th season in the NFL, and I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to play in the league for a few more years, because I know how hard the dude works firsthand.
It's basally same thing that happened with tight ends. Bigger players are getting better at running routes and catching balls so are another option on the field from a much larger body; they are no longer just to block. Much like basketball where centers are able to hit 3's. Also, as linebackers start emphasizing speed too much, now the fullback is able to exploit the size differences now
5:18 OMG!! I have been saying this for ages. This is why I adore Jalen Ramsey and L'Jarius Sneed. The most fustrating thing is seeing almost every corner giving up free 1st downs because they miss so many tackles.
As a 225lb 6’0 full back/olb ran a 4.6 40 In high school i can personal tell you it’s really really fun taking mfs heads off on trap blocks and anything outside zone. We had a formation called “fat train” with two off set full backs one back and the qb in pistol. Always y’all knew wtf was coming when you saw the starting and back up full back jog on the field, still couldn’t stop basic concepts. Running trap from the back field also is probably one of the best things, and most fun for big fella who can move.
In a sense, the running game has come full circle. Back in the early days of football, there wasn’t an exact role for each “back.” Every back had to be able to run the ball, pass the ball, and block the defenders. The game had evolved towards specialization, but now is shifting back towards it, just this time it’s including tight ends and bigger receivers.
I’ll never forget my d end in front of me first play got “read” like a mf turned around to our sideline and screamed “ they’re running read” about 4 times before our dc said “I know Dylan” baffled another school could run advanced concepts. They ran it twice with no success. We ran naked read about 10 times that game as we did every game let alone half back lead read or trap read.
I have always loved the fullback position and thought the position was not used to its full potential to me they are shorter tight ends also I have seen fullbacks more versatile then full time rbs
Sent this video to my dad cause we both love football. He said this is one of the best videos he’s ever seen that explains the fullback position. Very well done 👏🏻
Great insights on the resurgence of this 'role'. I was aware of Skowronek's role with the Rams and how McVay will continue to ride out 11 personnel. But the point you made with the linebackers being smaller than they were years before on average (the off-ball ones excel in coverage roles) made all the more sense why the role can be more lenient in the modern game. And the brand of positionless football becomes even more potent more guys can be a threat to run and catch on offense.
I am so utterly and absolutely perplexed by this comment. I’ve been fixated on it for nearly five minutes now, just getting my head around the fact that it exists.
It's fun to see the FB be reinvented. On some level, I think that there's a chance that you end up with a truly versatile team where it's 5 OLs and 6 skill players. Basically, think about what would happen if you loaded up with 6 clones of Taysom Hill. Any one of them can line up at any position at any given time and be effective. That is a terrifying proposition.
I hate the fact that I was the one that sold you the bottle and I didn’t even recognize you. Glad you’re enjoying my favorite bourbon! Thanks for stopping by and the shoutout!
Fullbacks are coming back because teams are realizing the value of a running game and how it helps the QB. The fullback adds a different level of physicality to the game where defenses have become built more to defend the pass!!!
Used to run split backs when I was in junior high. We could run, block, or run routes in any direction, at any time. Coach would line us up in either spot to mess with people. Fullback is such a fun position to play. Crack skulls, tote the rock, and catch passes.
Marcel Reece from the 08-16 Raiders is the perfect example of versatility. Played wideout at Washington, when he came to Oakland, they converted him to FB but also used at RB, WR and TE, plus special teams. Matchup Nightmare.

Been calling for this for years. Always seemed the obvious choice on how to evolve play again, after the patriots brought in tight ends as the go to weapons on pass plays. Fullbacks should be an essential part of the game as blockers pass receivers from the back field and running plays.
Your videos are so interesting... Just a big thanks ! What you do is truly great and as a french guy you allow me to know the game in ways that i wouldnt have otherwise so just thanks
I love that trap play from the Patriots. What a creative way to bring back an old concept in a fresh way. I wonder if the personnel pendulum swings back the other way in favor of bigger linebackers that put small fullbacks at a disadvantage.
Alec Ingold mentioned, swell with Bay Port Pirate High School pride! Also, this explains so well why I just play old school runs on Madden 2006 (love me William Henderson) Also Also, I LOVE that you're highlighting Fullbacks, but I don't just want blocking type Sam Gash style fullbacks, I want the return of Jim Taylor fullbacks as well! The Packers imo are kinda returning to that formula by having AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones, Dillon is 250lbs. like a blocking type fullback, and you got the speed back in Aaron Jones, yet both run the ball very well. I would love to see them both on the field at the same time because it brings a wrinkle to the offense that hasn't been seen since the 60's, by having 2 talented backs, it forces defenses to hesitate for a split second on where is the ball going? By the time they figure it out, either back could already have 5 yards gained. Hell I hope they bring back the ole' Split Back formation instead of I-Formation. And let's be fair here, Fullbacks don't have to be literally under that position, cuz technically speaking the FB position is dead, just like the Half Back position, they're all Running Backs, so by having Dillon, Jones, and an actual blocking type back (or in the Packers case Degiuara(?), an H-Type TE that fills in at blocking back) or just another backup back, it allows for quicker subs and can still share work loads.
Love the subject matter, love seeing stuff focusing on underrated positions like fullback. But most of all as a Chiefs fan, I'm happy you pronounced Khalen Saunders right. I foresee good things for him in New Orleans and it hurts me a little to hear announcers call him "Kaylen".
Another great thing about using a fullback is that you have a true I formation and the I formation is what created "the box" to begin with. If a defense doesn't line up in "the box" they will be beaten. So by lining up in the I you make the defense play to your own design or pay for it.
As an added bonus, let me mention that teams averaged about as many (.1 fewer) rush attempts per game last season as they did in 1992, and last season's rushing yards per game was the most since 1987
The sample sizes are very different (especially if we consider non-FB FB plays separately), but the data does bare out that 21 is the most efficient personnel grouping (between 21,12,11) in short yardage (aka obvious run) situations.
Everything Old is New Again. Joe Gibbs in the 80's used "H-Backs," Tight Ends in the Fullback position doing both Fullback and Tight End duties, so he could use Joe Riggins, a Fullback who was also the Redskins' best ball carrier, as a massive Halfback. Mike Shanahan would use Tight Ends the same way to put an extra blocker in the backfield for RGIII during both pass and option plays, so it makes sense that other coaches in the Shanahan Coaching Tree such as Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay also use variations on the concept.

Also Also, I LOVE that you're highlighting Fullbacks, but I don't just want blocking type Sam Gash style fullbacks, I want the return of Jim Taylor fullbacks as well!
Mike Alstot and Lorenzo Neal were both legends of the Fullback position
Another great thing about using a fullback is that you have a true I formation and the I formation is what created "the box" to begin with. If a defense doesn't line up in "the box" they will be beaten. So by lining up in the I you make the defense play to your own design or pay for it.
Glad to see Brett got his end of month ad read video in
As an added bonus, let me mention that teams averaged about as many (.1 fewer) rush attempts per game last season as they did in 1992, and last season's rushing yards per game was the most since 1987
Seeing people talk about fullbacks puts a smile on my face
FB was always my favorite guy to give the ball to in Madden/2K5. A good blocker and runner. Also almost like a TE in that he can catch too. Ideally.
8:11 damn didn’t have to call me out like that😂
Hey Bret, im glad you found Wigle Whiskey. I live in Pittsburgh and love that place and love the show. Fyi it's pronounced like the kids tv show "The Wiggles". I hope you made it to the distillery right in the strip district. If you haven't I encourage you to make the trip next time you're in Pittsburgh.
I’m so glad CJ Ham is the thumbnail. He’s one of my favorite players
Thank you for making this, it was very helpful in helping me understand the fullback position. (I'm somewhat new to football)
@BrettKollmann 7 months ago you tease us with a comment about your favorite position only to finally explain why! The Tua/Dolphins video was great - if not prophetic… but this one was even better! Looking forward to seeing more of the success that involving Alex Ingold brings!
Gotta love how we've spent decades coming up with most wild formations possible to own up options and now they've started to realize the most flexible formation is the standard I.
Always was a fullback fan glade to see their coming back
Brett I’m drunk rn but i’m using this video as a way to fall asleep. But I love this video this you’re talking about full back, which i played thru hs
The running game gives you the control over the clock and keeps the opponents offence off the field.
lmao what is the thumbnail
I love everything you make.... but this thumbnail is art. It will be in museums after you're dead and for centuries after.
Love this breakdown, all of a sudden the Texans have a Fullback and I’m guessing it’s from coach Meco 😂🤘🏽🔥
I've always been a Bears fan, but I remember Mike Alstott being one of my absolute favorite players in the league back in the early 00's when I was a kid. I still remember that Bucs Super Bowl in 02.
Don’t need fbs when you’ve got receivers griddying on routes because they’re untouchable by the rules
Straight up called me out with the starving myself part 💀
My favorite brett video shout out the fullbacks out there. fullbacks are so old theyre new
Cj hamm on the thumbnail let’s gooooo! Fb never get the time of day glad to see it’s coming back
I appreciate this. It’s changed the way I look at football.
