After seeing a dozen or more videos on this type of modification and hearing the claims of improvement I finally find one that actually demonstrates the before and after. Thanks for posting the proof.
Thank you for taking the time to produce this (and all) your video(s). I used rubber from an old truck bed mat on my new snow blower last summer, and the difference was astounding! It was a little difficult modifying an essentially brand new machine (used one winter), but I feel this simple modification made my machine perform like I thought it should have originally. Deep, heavy, water laden snow just flies across the yard with no clogging. I really appreciate your "work with what you have" approach so people like me can make improvements without spending a bunch of cash.
I have the exact same 826 Toro. I did the modification, and I just cleared the heaviest, wettest 4" of slushy snow, and ran through it in second gear! At one point it looked like water pumping out of the chute! Great video, Thanks!
I have watched both of your videos and so impressed that I have read through the entire comment list! You are a great man for all of your sharing, I thank you and can hardly wait to modify my own blower.
I bought my snowblower several years ago and used it twice. The first year was not too bad, we had one good dump of dry snow. The second year it was several dumps of wet with freezing and thawing. Once the snow was damp the snowblower was useless! Every 5' or so I had to clear the chute. I finished the job by hand. This last season I happened across your video and thought I'd give the machine one more chance, after sitting in the garage for 2 winters. It took me about 30 minutes to do this, in the freezing cold outside with my hands going numb. WOW, it was worth it! This thing now plows though snow wet or dry, sends that snow right across my driveway, and over my 6' fence if I'm not careful. Thank you for posting this video!
I did the paddle modification on my 1980 Toro 524 and in wet heavy snow is where it makes a huge difference. These old Toro's with the barrel augers never did throw snow real far but are efficient at moving snow. My new Toro Power Max HD 1232 on the other hand can blow any kind of snow wet or dry extremely far. Last winter here in southeastern MI we got 8 inches of very wet heavy snow. The Power Max HD threw that wet slop 50 feet. According to Toro powdery snow can be thrown 57 plus feet. The Toro anti clog system works as advertised. Snow blowers have come a long way in the ability to throw any kind of snow with efficiency. At least the HD models with 14 in impeller and arguer systems. My opinion on three stage units is that they are not as efficient in all snow conditions. Most who buy them regret doing so after a few winters using them. That is great you show the before and after difference when doing the impeller modification. It is an easy modification to do and in wet snow is where it really makes a difference.
I have 3 snow blowers and I'm going to try this clever trick this weekend. I like the way you brake everything down and explain very thoroughly.I watched both of your snow blower videos. Thanks for taking the time to make this video to help all the frustrated snow blower owners. Lou
Hey sixtyfive - just want to thank you for posting these. I finally did it this morning after we got 3"+ of heavy sleet and slush, which I knew my MTD would gag on. Did not clog once, and really threw the stuff! I really appreciate your sharing your maker knowledge on your channel.
Sixtyfiveford, I wanted to give you a big thank you for making this video. I just recently did this upgrade and it made a huge improvement with my snowblower. I used rubber from the sidewall from a old tire and used stainless steel nuts and bolts. I had a chance to use it on one of the last snow falls of this year - wet heavy snow. It worked great. I would say it was blowing about twice as far as before. Thanks again.
@@o0Avalon0o sidewalls are easy to cut with just a utility knife, if you just leave the tire bead alone. If you're trying to cut the tire tread, the only possible way to do it is with a reciprocating saw. I put the tire between tire ramps to create a slot for cutting; makes short work of it. The tire pads are multi purpose and good for all sorts of things like Jack stand pads, hydraulic jack pads, motorcycle kickstand pads, and knee saver kneeling pads 😎 Sidewall probably works better for the impeller extension than the tread area, which probably is too thick to work with, so I'll probably try it with that.
I can't thank you enough. This totally worked. Great modification and easy to do. Wish I had seen this 5 years ago when I bought my MTD Yard machine; I thought I cheaped out and bought a lesser piece of equipment. Just too much gap to be effective - but not anymore! Thanks again.
After watching many videos showing how to do the impeller mod , done in the summer, then claiming it works……then came to your video which showed the difference this mod makes. Thanks for going to the effort to produce this video, which shows the difference it makes. This was the proof I needed to carry out this mod and see the results for myself especially with the wet snow my area usually gets.
OK, just one more success story. I gave a neighbor of mine some of the 1/4 thick conveyer belting I have and he used it on a vintage Craftsman track driven old beast of a snow blower he got from his father. This unit is the good old day toughbuilt stuff that sears sold when I was a kid. Because the machine had a lot of space between the paddles and the tunnel is why I think, as you do I believe, he says it made the old girl throw snow twice as far as before and not clog in the wet crap. Thanks again, and I am going to continue to refer people to your very well done youtube video. Thanks.
Exactly this winter i am not carrying a stick around and i have so many tires laying around. Thanks a bunch this will be a tremendous help.Especially after the plow comes by and pushes all the wet garbage into the ends of the driveway.
I live in Canada where it's cold as a mofo. Wet snow is generally not a problem However I recently traded an old snowblower for some firewood and was not impressed with how the snow dribbled out its shoot. This guy seems pretty smart, so I tried this modification. On closer inspection of my impellers they were all slightly bent back on an angle. After straightening them out ,I did this modification and if I hadn't of spent the time to do this modification I wouldn't have noticed that. My snowblower now throws like hell and I'm certainly glad that I did this. Cheers!
I wouldn't have made it through this winter without this mod!! Awesome tip. Easy install. And it makes life easy with a beast of a snow blower. Thanks for the vids!!
I live in Detroit Lakes, MN - 45 miles East of Fargo, ND. & I saw your video last night and converted my 8hp Craftsman today. I had the heavy impellers so I had to buy a long drill bit for this project because it was a long reach & bolted the 3" belting I got from M&H supply with 1" x 5/16" bolts and used nylon lock nuts - I lubed the inside of the drum with oil for the start-up and fired it up - Interesting noise for sure. I let it run for a couple of minutes and everything looks great - Now all I have to do is wait for the snow and that will be the real test. Thanks for the great idea.
Excellent video. I posted to a snow blower forum because there are always questions there whether these kits really work or not...proofs in the pudding.
To think I almost threw my 22 inch snow blower in the garbage for constant clogging. Thanks to this video I modified the impeller and now my snow blower works amazing. It went from shooting snow from 6-8 feet to 15-20 feet. A couple of days ago we got rain than snow and it had no problem throwing slush and I couldn't clog it. Thanks again for the video.
First time since I made the modification that it has snowed here in southern Maine/NH boarder. A wet, slushy snow. My toro killed it! No clogging at all. Plus it actually threw the stuff! AND it threw it (wet slush) ten-15 feet. It threw the snow about 30 feet. WHat a fricken difference! Very cool, very easy and cheap. BTW-I was not going at the slowest speed-regular speed. Thanks again for the idea-worked perfect!
Bob Dawber Awesome, I'm glad you're impressed. It's amazing such a small thing can make such a dramatic improvement. I'm sure you'll keep the Toro around a long while now.
Yes I did this to my old Toro 724 with Tecumseh 8Hp That I installed after blowing up original motor. It literately throws 3 times as far! I got the idea originally from you and finally did it this year (The worst year for snow in 10 years) Yep I am a happy camper. However I must confess I bought a kit which made the project so easy. Because of where I am located getting suitable rubber was an issue. So I just bit the bullet and bought a kit! However I heard it here first! Thanks again!
Thanks for the vid. Just modified my 1990 Craftsman 5/23 blower. Picked up free floor tile samples at big box store and #10 self tapping screws for $.99. Tested it on the snow on our yard and I'd say 3xs as far for sure! Easy mod. Huge difference. Hopefully the tile will hold up. Thanks again for your video.
Great idea...after I watched this I went and checked my Husqusvarna and to my delight there is almost no clearance..they actually designed it to performed that same way your mod does...it never clogs...so far haha...cheers and greetings from Ontario Canada
The gap gets bigger with use as the housing stretches and the impeller blades start to bend. They're usually good when brand new with a minor 1/8" gap.
I did this mod last winter. I was ready to get rid of my 8:hP mtd for a higher hp model. Thought I'd try this first....Man am I glad I did!! Works awesome!! When my neighbors are all clogging up..I'm still chugging along ! Things you'll need.... 1)Rubber at least a 1/4" thick- cut into 2 1/2" wide by 3" deep. 2)Self tapping screws 1" long and washers( very important) -keeps head of screw accessible in case you have to remove it one day... 3) remove shoot from machine 4)predrill the rubber with 2 holes going front to back 5) put rubber on impeller then use your drill to basically Mark where your screws will go... 6)pre drill pilot hole in impeller for self tapping screws ( I used a narrow step down bit) 7) attach rubber with self tapping screw with washer...let it poke through the rubber so it'll be easy to find the predrilled holes. 8) secure it down...spin impeller and do the next blade. Good luck...It's super easy to do! 9) let it snow and be amazed at your new machine !!
joe DiMemmo : I have a 8HP MTD with Tecumseh engine. It has 3 blades on the impeller. By putting the paddles on, doesn’t it leave a non-smooth exit surface to throw the snow? Or that doesn’t matter? I can’t mount them on the back side of the blade. Did you make the paddle fit the curve of the blade (it curves upward at the outer edge). I can’t insert an image :-/ Hope to hear from you via reply in this thread
@@es52 You don't put it on the curved outer edge. Only put them on the leading edge as it will pull off it put on the back side. Even if you leave a 1/4" ridge from the rubber, snow will immediately fill it in.
Just got wet snow here in Maine last night and was going to wait a day until it froze so I could use my blower. But after seeing this I am going out to do the mod and give it a try. It was a great vid buddy, thanks for taking the time to show us.
I gave the paddles their first test tonight after I got home from work. They throw the snow between 25 - 30 feet, and with a fully re-built carb that I did last spring (thanks to your video), I got it done myself, all I had to do was buy the re-build kit plus a new float (parts less than 30 bucks). :)
I havent had any clogging issues with my Cub yet. But then last years snowfalls were mostly powdery so this is something to keep in mind. One question, once the new paddles are installed do you suggest "bedding" them in with the housing dry... say, just running it in the garage or bedding them in wet out in the snow.
Thanks again for the great video. After watching this I made the same mod to my snow thrower. Nice improvement. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to show everybody the improvement this mod makes.
I did this mod to my MTD SNOW FLITE (1984 vintage) with the 1/4-20 bolts due to the heavier gauge steel in the impeller. I used 2 1/4-20 bolts per paddle per impeller blade, I have 4 on my machine, 8 bolts total. I also added washers and lock washers as well, no nylon locking nuts though, as I doubt I would need them.
dude this is great, woke my wife just to tell her lol i was a little excited... Last year in kansas city was horrible on my snow blower, ever 2 min I had to stop and unclog. Going out today to look for parts and the best part as you mentioned in your other vid, it can be salvaged for free...never once have I thought to do that, so simple but effective...thanks for sharing
Haven't had time to actually dive in yet trying to finish up the Swamp Buggy Stroller, but i did find a couple of used tire's in the back that should work, looks a little thinner than what you had but for giggles i'll try it and see how they hold up, i'll make a video when i'm finished!
Thanks for taking the time. I'm surely going to do this. One good tip is to take a piece of rope and hang a stick off the handle to clear any clog that happens. Oh and one more thing...don't feel bad, a lot of project cars get turned into work benches :-)
Sixtyfiveford.I am writing on your RUclips because you were the first one I saw and seem maybe not the first but one of the ones?I have an old early 1970's Snotrac 20/5 with a 5 hp Tecumseh.Rebuilt the whole thing carb and all from the ground up but the engine as it cannot be killed and starts first pull every time.Anyway, I had to try it and it wasn't easy putting in the tire sidewalls as the blades are almost 3/8" thick steel and rubber 1/4" but with good stainless nuts, bolts, washers and lock washers, Man!It runs just as in your video, so much so that I have to keep the chute down about half way for the most part now as before it was up all the way and shooting like in your video. (just a dud!)All I can say is thanks for sharing this with us and also for those of you doing this, please make sure that a safe installation is done as these are very fast moving parts with a lot of force and injuries can happen if not done properly and balancing the parts as best as possible is not a bad idea, but ya! it works and works well!Next Summer is a new exterior finish, no not paint job but preserve it with clear, rust and all even on the chrome.A few more years, the old girl will be a Vintage machine! Was a fun and useful project Sixtyfiveford, Thanks again!
Just installed 3 paddles made from an old boat trailer tire on my MTD Yard Machine 8hp snow blower. 2- #10 screws/washers w/lock nuts on each paddle. Started it up & they worn in just right. Can't wait to try it...no snow in the forecast anytime soon here in Southern New England. I'll let you know how when it does. Thanks for the videos!
Gwdave here, I did this mod early in the summer.... I have had a couple of light snow falls that were wet... We just picked up about 4" of kind of wet snow, and along the road where the snow plow left the melted real wet snow from the chemicals I tried to plug up my 2 year old TROY..... I could not plug it up no even a little bit... I had to get in to some snow in the yard to remove the wet stuff from the inside of the blower so I could put it away....... Real neat mod, and I tell every one I know to do this mod it is worth it............
Dave Farrell GREAT! Most are too afraid to try this on a newer machine even though the performance is poor. I'm glad you tried it out. Thanks for the feedback.
We were gifted with an old MTD/YardMan 2 stage blower at the beginning of this season, this last big storm she shredded her auger belt. Her drive belt looks ready to go as well. I can't wait to give her new belts and add impeller paddles, and say goodbye to the clog after clog at the end of the driveway and in the gutter. Thanks for the Video!
Awesome! It was so cold but I broke her down in my kitchen!! LOL I love my wife! I put on the new belts and I used thick baler belt rubber for the paddles. The self tapping screws wouldn't go through the impeller blades so I drilled holes and used nuts & bolts to secure. I didn't have any locking compound for the nuts so I used my wife's nail polish! Did I mention I love my wife! The modification was amazing it threw the snow about double the distance. No clogs in the heavy stuff, no build up in the housing. I've told everyone I know to check it out on RUclips! Thanks!
Now that was a lot of work, just to do a comparison video, so allow me to say thank you. The proof is always in the pudding and you've certainly proved your point. I shortened the stack on my wood chipper to alleviate clogging but your way works even better. Oh and yes, my chipper will take your arm off at both intake and exhaust. Yikes, but she sure chips wood even up to 4 inches with just a little 25 hp tractor.
Thanks, this works very well, instead of buying a mud flap, I bought a plumbers band aid, which joins two pieces of cast iron pipe together. This is 1/4" thick, very pliable rubber, it is round but it I cut it in half with a chop saw and then again the long way. This gives you four pieces 1 3/4" wide and two surplus hose clamps, total cost with self tapping screws and fender washers less then $10.
I just finished putting my paddles on I put 1on each paddle I used bailers rubber from Tsc Best 15.00$ ever spent no more clogs ,and now even throwing the snow 3x further ! Thx great video 👍🏻
Absolutely cool! I just came into my shop with a totally impacted two-stage Honda HS928 ten HP and sat down on my laptop while I have a fan on it to melt the snow. I WAS trying to use a silicone spray, hoping the snow would slip by. Not very mechanically inclined but I am pretty sure I can follow your instructions. Thanks a million!
@@sixtyfiveford I did this with my older Honda HS80 no problem. Haven't had chance to try it yet. But my newer 928 is out of the question. Impeller must be tempered. All I did was chew up self tapping screws and drill bits.
I am going to do this the next time I service the blower! I was clearing a friends driveway last night that was about 10" of heavy wet snow left over from the 20" we got over the weekend and it was having lots of trouble throwing the snow more then a couple feet.
I did this to my 1978 Craftsman 24 inch Eager 1, 17 or 18 years ago. I was getting tired of it clogging and spitting slush on top of it's self so I cut mine out of a sidewall of a car tire. With the rubber kind of cupped, it will literally pump water about 8 to 10 feet and it has never clogged since. You will also notice the difference in the engine sound too, before my 7hp. would hardly work but now you can here the engine working even in nice powder. I still use it with the same paddles I made all those years ago.
Great tip and such an easy attachment shown on the other video. I call those tapping screws; Zap screws or zip screws. I used them in the sign shop to connect the facia sheet metal of an outdoor sign to the support frame.
Thanks a lot for this video. I was able to modify my snow blower yesterday and now it works much better! I appreciate you sharing this with me. My machine is a new Troy-Bilt Storm 2840 277cc 28-in Two-Stage blower.
Thanks for the video! I did this to my Toro 826, it is the same as yours but yours is in much better condition! Mine is a 1978. It is a beast with the paddles now.
Thanks for the demo . After seeing your video I can see the actual difference . I was pissed at my snowblower as it only vomit the snow out t'ill it completely clogged up. I will be adding those paddles instead of selling it . Thanks for saving me $1100.00
@@sixtyfiveford Hi bud! Tried to install my impeller mod today since it was nice and warm but the self tapping screws wouldn't go in the impeller. Tomorrow I'll go and buy a bit that will fit to the end of my extension and drill a couple holes . Looking forward to trying this out. I'll keep you posted on the results . Thanks
@@danh1202 Some machines (Toro etc) have a higher grade of steel for the impeller and the self tapping screws have a harder time. Drilling a hole is the remedy. It's just a tight area to be working so generally use hex shank drill bits that I can put into a screw bit adapter for extra reach.
Oh man thanks so much I live in Austria, half way through a very heavy winter, got fed up with shovelling, not looking forward to slushy stuff at the end of the winter, bought my first snowblower a Blisar W65 ??? doesn't throw far, but so far has done the job, looking forward to making your modification soon....
I tried the mod on my 25 year old snow king , when you put out the vid, and must say it works really well as far as the distance the snow is blown. My neibours can't understand how my old blower can shoot the snow twice as far of there brand new top of the line blowers. Lol Thx for the vid great stuff as always.
I hope you DID NOT tell them what you did. LOL Let them keep scratching their heads. This is about the best idea one could come up with. Great thinking 65.
almost took my ariens snow blower tobthe junk yard after it clogging time after time. saw your video this morning and I'm going to try this. thanks for the heads up
I did this to my Murray. The impeller blades already had a 5/16 hole in the middle. I bought some nuts, bolt washers and drilled a center hole in the paddle. I installed them. Will let you know how it goes.
I added the rubber pads to my snowblower. I had them too close to the side so I had to adjust because impeller was stuck. I also replaced the auger belt. I will also use DuPont snow and ice on the auger, impeller and chute. No more clogging. Can’t wait to test it out!
First I want to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And you always got some great ideas I love your videos. I'm going to try this on my 2 snowblower, one is a Toro that I bought about 4 years ago you are a lifesaver.
Hi sixtyfive . I installed the impeller mod and what a difference . I had to watch not to blow the snow over my lawn and into my neighbors laneway. Thanks for the tips
Made the mod to my Arien's 926LE which was clogging up regularly in the 6" of super wet snow here in NJ. A bit of a job since the impeller blades are too thick for self threading screws so it makes it somewhat of a chore to correctly attach the rubber paddles lightly against the impeller housing (I ended up having to trim them back some to ease up on the drag). Also, any deficiencies in your accessory drive belt will be magnified due to increased drag( you may have to adjust it if it's worn ) until the paddles wear some. Otherwise it does as advertised...thanks!
Great vid! I just picked up a 1993 toro 724. The gap is pretty close already but I think I'll get me some rubber and make some paddles before I try it out. Thank you for posting this video. You would think that the manufacturers of these machines would have figured this out already and been making them this way at least within the last few years.
I went to the local power equipment store to get a drive belt and I asked if they had any of the used paddles like you have. I lucked out and they had a couple and they gave them to me. I gave the girl a tip because she had to go garbage diving to find them. So I am going to do your mod! I am still waiting for that gear, they said it should get here Monday. Of course we are going to get dumped on Monday with another big snow.
After watching your other video on this modification i did it to my craftsman snow blower and it throws the snow at least twice as far and does not clog up ever. it used to clog up a lot. Going to do the same to my dads snow blower next. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for sharing. Fall of 2019 i bought the same machine 8/26 1975. Plus a Toro blade for the machine never used that i can see. A mod i will be doing.
Great idea............. seems to work, fairly simple and cost effective. This probably would have worked on a single stage tractor mounted snow thrower my Dad had many years ago. He had it on ten minutes and cleared the chute 4 times.. it then went in the garage never to return. Thanks for sharing. Since kids may be watching these videos might I suggest not clearing a clog by shoving your leg in the chute even with the machine off ?
dunno if you guys gives a shit but if you're bored like me atm you can stream pretty much all of the new series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother recently =)
Great video and great idea - like some of people I get a ton of salt from the salt trucks at the end of my driveway and this is where the clogging always happens - I will be doing this mod asap
Hope the People of Boston KNOW about this MOD. I'll be putting it on my Craftsman/Husqvarna SNOW THROWER...as it has the same ICING/CLOGGING problem. Thanks for the idea...great solution.
Just completed the installation...bought the 4" wide belting at Tractor Supply...$16.97. Got about 10 feet left after installation on the 3 paddles. Home Depot didn't have anything that would work for the 'rubber' part. Had to DRILL holes through the belting AND 'paddles' to use #8 x 3/4" Philips Head 'self tapping'...which they weren't. Lined up the drilled holes and 'paddles' with an awl. Took about 2 1/2 hours to complete. Nice Saturday 'project'. Oh sure...then I notice that my SHOE SKIDS 24279 needed replacing...ordered them at SEARS Direct for $5.09 each. Bought 4...for $27.94 including shipping and local tax. They had them on the website for $7.43 but their website gave me an intermediate price of $5.09 on 'some window' right before I checked out. Used a CHAT with Sears Parts Direct and they honored the $5.09 price. Good on ya SEARS! So...I bought 4 knowing that the SNOW will never end. BTW...you've kept me busy today. Also did the Garage Door Opener anti-theft solution.!
Fishingtuts FT...Haven't had sufficient SNOW (Colorado) in the past few days so I can't say "YES" for sure. Will update the post to CONFIRM the probable/anticipated "YES"
Romeo Whiskey Actually was able to PLOW this morning. Snow thrower throws it MORE than 8 feet than without the enhancements. Also...seems like the enhancements were sufficient to CLEAR the ICE COLUMN of wet snow when they did occur. Results: 9 out of 10! I'd recommend it to others to do.
hi there sixty, my husband just put paddles on 2 snow blowers and cant wait to try them. we got snow here in akron ohio a week ago and his new cub cadet got clooged with that really wet slushy snow. he cant wait tks for your help. will let you know what happens , tks again.although no snow for the next week
We got enough wet snow last year here in MN. I needed to get this modification done before the snow flies. All I have to do now is re-grease the chute and put it back on.
of course now i have to bu a new engine, will a 6.5 honda clone fit, i already know i need a 3/4 inch to 1 inch adapter, is the baseplate the same as an hm80?
I think the bolt pattern is the same but I'm not sure if the height of the crankshaft is the same. So you may need to raise it up a little on blocks so you can use the same belts.
my main concern was the pattern, ive tried 3 different carbs this year and they all do the sdame thing, the snowblower will run fine for 10 minutes with light surging, and then it will start to stutter and run like shit, making it useless, its frustrating, im giving up on it for now because i found a clone on ebay for 80 dollars brand new, and honestly the old engine is beginning to become a money pit, ill put on craigslist for 75 bucks, i think the exhaust valve is out of spec
Here you can see all the dimensional specs of the Honda Engines. Look at the GX160 www.smallenginesuppliers.com/html/engine-specs/honda-engine-specs.html
I like the idea of the paddles. Going to have to do that to mine. I wax my snowblower including the auger and impeller, then during the winter I will spray the chute and impeller with PAM no stick spray
sixtyfiveford so I did the mod. Didn't have rubber but I had a semi-soft plastic sheet and used that to make the paddles. Mine is an MTD yard machine and has a 3 wing impeller and annoying rivets in the bell but I figured, eh they'll wear down the plastic paddles as it spins. Think I gave everyone on the street a heart attack when I fired it up hahaha! Stayed major noisy for a loooong time. Still is. I might have to go back in there with a Dremel if they don't chamfer soon. Damn rivets. Why put them there? The thing's an animal though. This mod should be awesome. Thank you again.
After seeing a dozen or more videos on this type of modification and hearing the claims of improvement I finally find one that actually demonstrates the before and after. Thanks for posting the proof.
Same here, Jody!
I agree.. lots of "how to install" but nothing at work "(¬ . ¬)"
That's awesome.
I have watched both of your videos and so impressed that I have read through the entire comment list! You are a great man for all of your sharing, I thank you and can hardly wait to modify my own blower.
Thanks. It makes a world of difference if you deal with wet snow.
That's great. Thanks for sharing.
You've changed my whole snow blower world.
+stclairstclair Awesome!
+matcstudent1 You really need to stfu and find a hobby.
You sir are awesome. I have used your tips on my snowblower and I have saved cash on repairs that don't take a small engine expert to do.
I just did this mod on my snowblower and I have to say it works very well.
I have 3 snow blowers and I'm going to try this clever trick this weekend. I like the way you brake everything down and explain very thoroughly.I watched both of your snow blower videos. Thanks for taking the time to make this video to help all the frustrated snow blower owners. Lou
Louis Abel Let me know what you think.
Proof that it works !
Hey sixtyfive - just want to thank you for posting these. I finally did it this morning after we got 3"+ of heavy sleet and slush, which I knew my MTD would gag on. Did not clog once, and really threw the stuff! I really appreciate your sharing your maker knowledge on your channel.
Awesome, I'm glad you tried it out.
What did you use to cut the rubber from the tire sidewall? I thought tires had a bunch of metal in them.
@@o0Avalon0o I can't remember exactly right now but, I think I used a sharp utility knife and a pair of tin snips.
The tire pads are multi purpose and good for all sorts of things like Jack stand pads, hydraulic jack pads, motorcycle kickstand pads, and knee saver kneeling pads 😎
Sidewall probably works better for the impeller extension than the tread area, which probably is too thick to work with, so I'll probably try it with that.
I can't thank you enough. This totally worked. Great modification and easy to do. Wish I had seen this 5 years ago when I bought my MTD Yard machine; I thought I cheaped out and bought a lesser piece of equipment. Just too much gap to be effective - but not anymore! Thanks again.
William Welsh Awesome.
I never thought about adding paddles, I watched your videos and I am going to add them. Thanks for the info!
Sixtyfiveford, do you need to worry about balancing the two rubber paddles (weight wise or location wise)?
Cheers!
Awesome
Awesome. I can't wait to do this to my Simplicity 555. I live in Central NJ and we get alot of wet snow and I am constantly clogging up. You ROCK !!
+Ian S Your Simplicity will be amazing after this..
I wouldn't have made it through this winter without this mod!! Awesome tip. Easy install. And it makes life easy with a beast of a snow blower. Thanks for the vids!!
You're welcome. Glad it helped.
Keith G I'm glad you tried it and I know you'll be very happy with it.
Excellent video. I posted to a snow blower forum because there are always questions there whether these kits really work or not...proofs in the pudding.
This is towards the low end of the improvement that they show. I've had some throw 5x further.
This is a very good presentation. He's clear and sincere and thorough.
Fred Moskol Thanks. I'm glad you like it.
Al Nu Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad this helped and that you actually tried it.
Stumbled on your video, thank you so much! We just had a 10" wet snowfall in Cle, & I spent hours clogging & unclogging, thanks again!
Awesome. Glad you did it.
Wow that Toro is in great shape for the age, I have a Toro 521 and have been meaning to do this, I need your ambition!
Paul Peterson Awesome. You're welcome. Thanks the taking the time to comment and try it out.
3) remove shoot from machine
4)predrill the rubber with 2 holes going front to back
5) put rubber on impeller then use your drill to basically Mark where your screws will go...
6)pre drill pilot hole in impeller for self tapping screws ( I used a narrow step down bit)
7) attach rubber with self tapping screw with washer...let it poke through the rubber so it'll be easy to find the predrilled holes.
8) secure it down...spin impeller and do the next blade.
Good luck...It's super easy to do!
9) let it snow and be amazed at your new machine !!
I'm glad you tried it out.
joe DiMemmo : I have a 8HP MTD with Tecumseh engine. I can’t insert an image :-/
Hope to hear from you via reply in this thread
@@es52 You don't put it on the curved outer edge. Only put them on the leading edge as it will pull off it put on the back side. Even if you leave a 1/4" ridge from the rubber, snow will immediately fill it in.
Just got wet snow here in Maine last night and was going to wait a day until it froze so I could use my blower. But after seeing this I am going out to do the mod and give it a try. It was a great vid buddy, thanks for taking the time to show us.
Lance Redit Thanks for watching. Let me know what you think if you try it.
Thank you for the great tip. I will put the paddles on in a few days to be ready for this winter.
Let me know what you think this winter.
I havent had any clogging issues with my Cub yet. But then last years snowfalls were mostly powdery so this is something to keep in mind. One question, once the new paddles are installed do you suggest "bedding" them in with the housing dry... say, just running it in the garage or bedding them in wet out in the snow.
You blew my snow blowing mind , I plan to modify my snowblower tomorrow.
+Joseph Melcher Awesome. When you do it let me know what you think.
Thanks again for the great video. After watching this I made the same mod to my snow thrower. Nice improvement. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to show everybody the improvement this mod makes.
I just purchased the same model Toro! It has the same mod you have, great video
Andrew Koetz Awesome.. Those Vintage MTD machines are well built.
Cannot argue with those results...ordered my set from Amazon
dude this is great, woke my wife just to tell her lol i was a little excited... Last year in kansas city was horrible on my snow blower, ever 2 min I had to stop and unclog. Going out today to look for parts and the best part as you mentioned in your other vid, it can be salvaged for free...never once have I thought to do that, so simple but effective...thanks for sharing
Brando B Thanks for the great comment. Yeah, I think you will be amazed at the difference. Give me an update when you do it.
Haven't had time to actually dive in yet trying to finish up the Swamp Buggy Stroller, but i did find a couple of used tire's in the back that should work, looks a little thinner than what you had but for giggles i'll try it and see how they hold up, i'll make a video when i'm finished!
Swamp Buggy Stroller.... Goin to check it out right now.
Great video 👍. This shows the advantage of using them perfectly. Thank you for your efforts.
Thanks for taking the time. I'm surely going to do this.
One good tip is to take a piece of rope and hang a stick off the handle to clear any clog that happens.
Oh and one more thing...don't feel bad, a lot of project cars get turned into work benches :-)
blipco5 Yeah, it's hard not to pile stuff into the bed of the truck.
+Turk T You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hey, it is not to dangerous if you install them while the motor is not running.
***** Yeah, let me know what you think when the snow hits.
Thanks HUGE for the tip man! I'm excited to see how paddles help with my blowers!!
Thanks for watching. I hope you try it out.
You're welcome. I'm glad you like it. Let me know what you think when you get around to doing it.
Thanks!
That's great to hear. The Kitchen is the perfect place to work on stuff, food not to far away.
Yeah, a lot of people have been asking me to do this video for a while so I finally cracked. Sounds like a great chipper.
Philip Pond Awesome.
I just finished putting my paddles on I put 1on each paddle I used bailers rubber from Tsc
Best 15.00$ ever spent no more clogs ,and now even throwing the snow 3x further ! Thx great video 👍🏻
Awesome.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I hope you try it out.
@@sixtyfiveford I did this with my older Honda HS80 no problem. Haven't had chance to try it yet. But my newer 928 is out of the question. Impeller must be tempered. All I did was chew up self tapping screws and drill bits.
I'm impressed. My snapper is useless in wet snow but I will modify it and hope it works like yours. Great video, Thanks.
I think you'll be very happy with it. Let me know what you think.
Dude this is an insane difference! Thanks for the before and after comparison. I’m 💯% going to do this.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Thank you for being amazing on RUclips!
Hey Thanks!
I am going to do this the next time I service the blower! I was clearing a friends driveway last night that was about 10" of heavy wet snow left over from the 20" we got over the weekend and it was having lots of trouble throwing the snow more then a couple feet.
+Jeremy Vickers Yeah, try it out on one. You'll love it.
Yeah, It is really neat to actually hear the snow blower use all of its available Horse Power.
Great tip and such an easy attachment shown on the other video. I call those tapping screws; Zap screws or zip screws. I used them in the sign shop to connect the facia sheet metal of an outdoor sign to the support frame.
Murster62 Thanks..
Thanks a lot for this video. I was able to modify my snow blower yesterday and now it works much better! I appreciate you sharing this with me. My machine is a new Troy-Bilt Storm 2840 277cc 28-in Two-Stage blower.
Les Mack That's great. It a little bit of a pain to get in there but definitely worth it.
Thanks for the video! I did this to my Toro 826, it is the same as yours but yours is in much better condition! Mine is a 1978. It is a beast with the paddles now.
Josh M These are great machines. The one in the video(1981) has been repainted but served a long hard life and is still going.
sixtyfiveford Looks great! Did you repaint it? If so, what paint did you use? I'm restoring mine after this season.
Rustoleum (Banner Red if I recall). It's great paint but takes a few days to fully dry.
wow I tried your idea, and my snow blower works really good, Thank you
John Leddick That's GREAT! Now it's a super snow blower.
Thanks for the demo . After seeing your video I can see the actual difference . I was pissed at my snowblower as it only vomit the snow out t'ill it completely clogged up. I will be adding those paddles instead of selling it . Thanks for saving me $1100.00
It makes a world of difference. Thanks, I hope you do try it out.
Oh man thanks so much I live in Austria, half way through a very heavy winter, got fed up with shovelling, not looking forward to slushy stuff at the end of the winter, bought my first snowblower a Blisar W65 ??? doesn't throw far, but so far has done the job, looking forward to making your modification soon....
www.guem-kaercher-shop.at/Wintergeraete/Schneefraesen/BLISAR-Schneefraesen/BLISAR-Schneefraese--SG-65-W-Premium-Edition.html
Your G+ still thinks you're in France..! ;-)
It looks like a nice machine. It should benefit from the modification. Let me know if you do it.
I tried the mod on my 25 year old snow king , when you put out the vid, and must say it works really well as far as the distance the snow is blown. My neibours can't understand how my old blower can shoot the snow twice as far of there brand new top of the line blowers. Lol
Thx for the vid great stuff as always.
That is awesome.
I hope you DID NOT tell them what you did. LOL Let them keep scratching their heads.
This is about the best idea one could come up with. Great thinking 65.
Thanks guys.
Excellent video on these. One of the best. They make a world of difference.
almost took my ariens snow blower tobthe junk yard after it clogging time after time. saw your video this morning and I'm going to try this. thanks for the heads up
+Brandon Miller I think you'll be very happy. Let me know what you think.
I did this to my Murray. The impeller blades already had a 5/16 hole in the middle. I bought some nuts, bolt washers and drilled a center hole in the paddle. I installed them. Will let you know how it goes.
You'll be very pleased. Let me know what you think.
I added the rubber pads to my snowblower. I had them too close to the side so I had to adjust because impeller was stuck. I also replaced the auger belt. I will also use DuPont snow and ice on the auger, impeller and chute. No more clogging. Can’t wait to test it out!
You'll be amazed with it.
Great information, hopefully my winter will not suck so bad now.
I hope you try it out.
First I want to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And you always got some great ideas I love your videos. I'm going to try this on my 2 snowblower, one is a Toro that I bought about 4 years ago you are a lifesaver.
Thank you! You too!
Big difference aye, very nice. Will be making this upgrade to my blower.
Hi sixtyfive . I installed the impeller mod and what a difference . I had to watch not to blow the snow over my lawn and into my neighbors laneway. Thanks for the tips
That's fantastic. I'm glad you tried it out.
You're welcome. I'm glad you spent the time to do it and I hope you enjoy it for years to come.
Great vid! I just picked up a 1993 toro 724. The gap is pretty close already but I think I'll get me some rubber and make some paddles before I try it out. Thank you for posting this video. You would think that the manufacturers of these machines would have figured this out already and been making them this way at least within the last few years.
Thanks.
Wow. That's crazy. Thanks for showing this.
It's amazing what such a simple thing can do for them. Thanks for letting me know. What does your father have?
sixtyfiveford My dad also has a craftsman.
Does the road sign behind your left shoulder have any meaning ? (2:00)
thanks for taking the time to show us the difference !conclusive testthumbs up !
Thanks
Thanks for sharing. Fall of 2019 i bought the same machine 8/26 1975. Plus a Toro blade for the machine never used that i can see. A mod i will be doing.
It makes a big difference in performance. These old Toros are tanks and will never die.
+Nate Ngzcaz I have used it on many single stage tractor snowblowers, and you're right it works great.
Fantastic. Saved me throwing out my vintage Reo T&C.
Thanks
Joe from NJ. 60" of snow this year. Ouch. Wish I had seen this 59" ago
That's great. I'm glad this modification helped.
Do you realize how much time you save us? Even more important is that we are not angry anymore. :) I owe you a beer.
Ivo Gardner Thanks bud.
dunno if you guys gives a shit but if you're bored like me atm you can stream pretty much all of the new series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother recently =)
@Maximiliano Erik Yea, have been watching on InstaFlixxer for years myself :)
Great video and great idea - like some of people I get a ton of salt from the salt trucks at the end of my driveway and this is where the clogging always happens - I will be doing this mod asap
Dan Bechan Thanks. You'll really like it.
Did this to my old Briggs n Stratton snowblower now I wouldn't trade it for a brand new one lol
Great idea thanks for the tip!!
Awesome! I'm glad you tried it out.
Romeo Whiskey Did it work?
Fishingtuts
FT...Haven't had sufficient SNOW (Colorado) in the past few days so I can't say "YES" for sure.
Will update the post to CONFIRM the probable/anticipated "YES"
Romeo Whiskey
Actually was able to PLOW this morning.
Snow thrower throws it MORE than 8 feet than without the enhancements.
Also...seems like the enhancements were sufficient to CLEAR the ICE COLUMN of wet snow when they did occur.
Results: 9 out of 10!
I'd recommend it to others to do.
Awesome
hi there sixty, my husband just put paddles on 2 snow blowers and cant wait to try them. we got snow here in akron ohio a week ago and his new cub cadet got clooged with that really wet slushy snow. he cant wait tks for your help. will let you know what happens , tks again.although no snow for the next week
Helen Carr That's great. Let me know what he thinks.
You got me curious to see the gap on my snowblower. I think I will try this, good video.
It makes a good improvement even on the best snowblowers.
can't wait to try this little trick .thanks, rudy
rudy52350 It really does make a huge difference. Let me know if you try it out.
sixtyfiveford oh i'll try it .i'll let you know when i do.thanks
Great idea, that will be on my blower tomorrow. Thanks.
Thanks. I hope you do, it makes a huge difference.
We got enough wet snow last year here in MN. I needed to get this modification done before the snow flies. All I have to do now is re-grease the chute and put it back on.
Thank's for making the video, great Idea, Im going to put this mod on my Cub Cadet with same problem, no stopping it now.. From Michigan.
You're welcome. I'm sure you get a lot of wet lake effect snow in Michigan.
thank you! i can now throw snow across the street, really happy with the results
Awesome.
of course now i have to bu a new engine, will a 6.5 honda clone fit, i already know i need a 3/4 inch to 1 inch adapter, is the baseplate the same as an hm80?
Just used my 45" craftsman walkbehind with paddles...........holy crap blew wet snow/sleet over 50' thanks!
Awesome.
Yeah man did it myself and I'm too happy...Can't wait for snowfall now
Awesome.
Thanks i did that to my toro after your first video. it makes a huge difference. There one great mod.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Haven’t even used my snow blower yet but I did this mod already. We get heavy wet snow pretty much predominantly here. Hopefully no issues to come!
Thanks, I'm glad you tried it. You'll be amazed by it.
I like the idea of the paddles. Going to have to do that to mine. I wax my snowblower including the auger and impeller, then during the winter I will spray the chute and impeller with PAM no stick spray
That does help clogging. The paddles have the added benefit of increasing your throwing distance.
Great video, great idea. Congrats to the working man.!
Peter Farnsworth Hey thanks.
Super, easy idea! Wow! Great video also. Thanks for sharing!
***** Hey Thanks.
Can't wait to do this mod. Thanks for sharing all your ideas. You're awesome.
+pieceworkstudios Yeah, you'll love it.
sixtyfiveford so I did the mod.
