Love to all.
YES, JP, you are absolutely CORRECT that Paul McCartney played "YESTERDAY" on his 1964 Epiphone Texan. The Beatles favored Epiphones. Paul McCartney purchased his "1964 FT-79 Epiphone Texan in 1965 in New York City. It was an all solid wood, right-handed model, which he flipped over. He learned to play with the strings upside down or right side up. Paul later had the nut and bridge saddle reversed to accommodate a left-handed player such as himself. When Epiphone introduced their Texan in 1942, it was made in a smaller body shape, with square shoulders, closer to a 000 Martin. When Gibson started making the FT-79, in the later 1950's, they changed this guitar to a shape that was very similar to the Gibson J-45/J-50. Which had a larger body and sloped shoulders.
The guitar now named the Texan was essentially the budget model of the Gibson J-45. However, there were some key differences. The Texan had a 25.5” long scale neck, similar to their Advanced Jumbo model, compared to the J-45's 24.75” short scale neck.
Here's Paul playing "YESTERDAY" on his 1964 Epiphone Texan on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1965:

It sound alright but not anywere near the quality sound of your G70. For what it is its a fine guitar.
That shirt however! ;)
They have a US made version of that as well.
The Texan like the Excellente and Frontier are genuine reissues and are not part of the inspired by Gibson range but they are made at the same factory under licence in Indonesia as the IBG range (either Sammick or Cort).
Love these Epiphones and episodes!!!
Love your videos JP, would love to see you review/play "The Workhorse" Gibson J-45 Standard Vintage Sunburst, the most recorded acoustic guitar in history eh! Just bought one a few weeks ago and it looks like Gibson has upped their game on these, flawless. I had the Epi Inspired by Gibson J-45, also great, but the real thing is simply more of everything that's great about the Epi. However, the Epi does make it seem overpriced :(
My guess is that you are provided a cherry picked guitar because they know that you are going to rave about it on RUclips. Is this a possibility? The only way to know that you received an average guitar I sto purchase one online anonymously.
Gibson has a brilliant strategy a lot of people haven't picked up on yet. It's in line with a problem the guitar industry has, that is this misplaced value in American labor. I love American built products, but the problem is the powers that be sold our US manufacturing workforce out decades ago, so USA artisan / boutique builders still have a place, but for the big builders, the truth is they can provide a lot better value to costumers building outside the United States. Instead of slapping their USA Gibson brand on something built in Mexico, like C.F. Martin and Taylor do, Gibson has decided to build up the Epiphone brand to new quality standards and they have done it... The "Inspired By Gibson" line and it's sister "Masterbuilt" all-solid collections are the best acoustic guitars the company has ever produced.... There's a luthier who use to work for Stew Mac who runs a channel, Driftwood Guitars. He's a boutique builder and he cut open a Gibson G series and he cut open an Epiphone Inspired by Gibson J-45 and he points out objectively the Epiphone is a better built guitar around that $1k price... The Epiphone J-45 is really the guitar a working musician can afford. Adjust for inflation and it cost a player today about as much as a USA built J-45 would have back in the 50s or 60s... So the USA Gibson brand, the good guitars they build, not the cheap G and Studio stuff, the Gibson brand is really a luxury brand in the guitar world aimed more at the deep pocket hobbyist. This is why they produce so many signature collections. Real working musicians don't give a shit about a signature collection. They are positioning the company so that Epiphone becomes their real mainstream brand and the Gibson brand the high-end luxury brand. This is former Levi's CEO James Curleigh's direction and I think given the state of things, it's a solid direction.
Glad to be at your service. Cheers. Roger
Texan, Frontier or Excellente? (I have a ‘72 Gibson J40 and a Tanglewood SW1000SR)
Great review of a wonderful guitar, I am old enough to remember these when they were first introduced in the UK. Great channel, subbed.
That's ridiculous. We are definitely experiencing an acoustic guitar renaissance.
WoW 😮 this Epiphone sounds absolutely amazing. It has such a big sound.
Gibson made a wise decision when it gave you a Texan. Judging by the comments, it’s already made its money back in future sales. Your reviews of Epiphones “inspired” me to buy one, a 1992 Joe Pass Emperor II archtop made in Korea at the Samick factory. Like its Indonesian brothers, it is a quality instrument. Well crafted and gives a beautiful classic jazz tone. And … I’ve got you to thank for turning me on to the quality coming out of Epiphone’s overseas factories. Cheers!
I finally got this guitar and compared this Masterbilt Texan to my 1965 Texan (made in Kalamazoo USA) and although there are differences, this guitar is well worth the price. It's actually, in my opinion, underpriced (Just like all the guitars in the Masterbuilt lineup and the "Inspired by Gibson" lineup) thankfully...lol... Again, great video.
Hey JP. I am the 100 thumbs up like - what do I win?
What are your thoughts on the Yamaha ll16?
A inspired by gibson is on the top of list of guitars to buy for me 😁👍love the shows JP 👍it’s a toss up between this one and the j45 for me. I would love to see a review of a gibson j45 😁😁
@JP_CORMIIER 👍😁
Nice review and the guitar sounds great. Having the guitar setup and checked out by a skilled guitar technician to your preferences is always a plus.
nut spacing is off.
Are all of the Texan's built in Bozeman, Montana now? When I search Google, I come up with guitars from around $600 up to $2600. The sticker in JP's Texan says FT79 Masterbuilt and the one I'm looking at says FT79 Masterbuilt Tribute.
"The touch of the Master's hand" JP I'm convinced you could take any cheap guitar off the rack and make it sound amazing, but put one of these "inspired by..." in your hands? and Whoa Nelly!
It's not complicated, buy a Yamaha
And Recording King, never heard of them until I played one, quite exceptional 😊
One of the best guitars I loved playing in the humble Long & McQuade, has been the Epiphone EL-00 Pro. I would love for them to get an example of the Texan and Frontier.
Yes, a truly lovely sound - capturing that fantastic vintage quality of a viola down low and a mandolin up top. Tremendous contrast!
I always enjoy these reviews for many reasons, but the main one is that JD is one of the few people that goes beyond the usual strumming that most reviewers do, and knows how to play and bring out the tones and characteristics that the guitars have, so you really get a good idea of what a guitar is really capable of.
I really like the way you cover this level of guitar, I hope folks are listening! Thank you.
Got my Epiphone Frontier of the back of your review great stuff JP keep em coming Sir …❤️❤️❤️👍🏻🌞⭐️👍🏻
Very warm, clear and full without any muddiness. Great sounding guitar!
Waiting for them to do an LG2 or an L-1 let’s have a 12 fret blues box please.
It is a great guitar and in addition, your playing makes it sound greater! On another note, what picks does the tremendous JPC use? Your technique is the key, but I like to ask the great players. Thanks for your videos.
Tone Slab picks
Bought the frontier on your recommendation J.P,beautiful guitar and a fantastic sound.Might save up for this one..
I have a magic Joe Pass from 1995 and a 1973 ET and I will be getting this incredible guitar.
Gibson shoul deeply be ashamed of themselves for producing some of the poorest acoustic in the past, may be now. A good epiphone texan has so many great features like the performance taper neck. I like the texan neck better than lets say a gibson j45 and they sound better too. They are some of the best slope shoulders ever made . I think the Bozeman texan that came out a few years ago is also a great one.
What is your favorite inspired by Gibson Guitar? Do you like that line better than the High end Recording Kings?
Bought an excellente last year for some gigs .. loved it .. snagged the J200 epi inspired by after checking your vids. Epi is killing it ❤️
Thx for the vids JP✌️
Another great video, I watched your video on the excellente and immediately picked one up and I'm blown away thank you for the great info. I'd love to see you do a review on a Gibson g45 which I picked up because to me it sounded better than the j45 at a fraction of the cost the one with the regular soundhole not the one where they put it on the side.. keep up the great videos, I appreciate all the info that you jam-pack into them.
Nice FlatPick Nation shirt, need to get me one!
Thanks for this review guitar brother John !🎸🚀🦅🤔👍👀
im going to need to plan a guitar shopping day soon, thanks for all these epiphone/gibson vid reviews GSWJ
Wizz Jones the awesome folk maestro also plays a 64 Texan. I love em :+)
The 1970 ft150 ft155 i heard were great. Do you know of them?
Is this the Masterbilt Texan?
Yes
Crapaphone. Your still at the toystore. Tool store at Gibson
I think the Gibson j 200 because Although I inspired is awesome it not close in sound to the inspired humming bird. I would like to hear your A B test J 200 Gibson vs inspired???
ADVANCED JUMBO, please!
Nice review! Wish the nutwidth wasn't so dainty!
I just bought an Epiphone Hummingbird Studio and I love it!!! Epiphone has 2 versions of it, but they are basically the same except for the prices one is 850.00 the other is 350.00 and some minor specs, I can't see paying a 500.00 difference for just slightly different tone in fact I can't really hear a difference, so I got the Studio, and I am completely happy with it! I agree with you on the fact that Epiphone has really stepped up their game!!!
I bought a 2022 hb last week. Great guitar.
Love your reviews....this one sounds sweet..... Ka-next
What do you think about the Masterbilt Texan?
Question. Is the neck smaller than a J45?
well into the Shopping Cart! :)
I would love it if you could review the American made Texan.
He basically did lol
Lovely but I dont like the Euro € logo on the pickguard… Epic-Phone!
Paul McCartney loves his original Texan. He wrote Blackbird on it.
Big Hawk, Blackbird and all of Macca’s successive hits after 1968 were actually written and recorded on his 1967 Martin D-28. However the somehow classical piece George and him used to have fun with -and was the germ to Blackbird- doodled out of the Texan and certainly many other great acoustic Beatle songs (Michelle, I’ve Just Seen A Face, Here There and Everywhere, etc.) also were mostly composed and recorded on his beloved Epiphone acoustic until the batch of tunes John & him wrote during their stay in India.
I love them too.. but I am looking to get a Frontier.
Question. The texan or the frontier? If you had to choose one?
I have an IBG Epiphone ES335. It's so awesome... But all the IBG Epiphone acoustic guitars I've tested were way heavy and sounded like garbage (Hummingbird, J200, Dove)... Sorry JP, you and I will have to agree to disagree on those models...
Beware, my 2017 Texan is a lemon. Much too heavy built and braced. Lack ob base an of overall tone. Mine is a 2017 model, Indonesian made. The sticker is identical but:
STYLE: FT-79 (instead of "FT 79" in JPs Model)
EPIPHONE: Insp. by TEXAN (instead of "Masterbilt Texan" in JPs Model)
Overall build is identical to Cormiers guitar. The bridge lacks the two perloid inlays which hide screws. The bridge pins in Cormiers Masterbild are closer to bridges back edge. Different Design and poorly cloned?
Soundwise , my one, very sadly is a lemon. I guess, the models "Inspired by Texan" which were produced till 2018 are a different breed than the later Masterbilt ones.
There is even a brand new line of Epiphone Texans (USA built). Beware what exact model you buy!
Yours is the about 350$ model. The "inspired" signing from Gibson is confusing.
This "inspired by Texan" Model has much smaller sides in the depth so it doesn't sound like the masterbilt one.
Just with the "Masterbilt" in the sticker and the US made are the guitars to pick up.
The cheap Texans are still in production.
Epiphone made superior guitars to Gibson until Gibson bought them out, then they spent years being forced to make sub standard product, it's great to see them up there again.
You're SOOO right about that 'Beatles' decay at the end. One can really hear it!
I swear by those apogee interfaces. I like the older ones better. I have the same one and a old duet still use them. What software do you use..
I have had the Epi IBGs Hummingbird and J200…sold one traded the other….great builds but sounded pitiful unplugged but great plugged in….been setting up guitars for 35+ years now and could not tweak either one…I subsequently found out that the secret was to remove the pick guards…lol..oh well…picked up a ‘81 Guild GAD 50 that blew me away….and a recent trade for a ‘79 Yamaha FG 340ii I had the lady asked if I would knock some money off for her old Takamine EF-340 (July ‘83 model lawsuit era) in mint…what a sound from a plywood guitar and surprisingly good electronics in it…anyways I am off the Epi boat for awhile…think they are overrated. Great review as usual JP ! 🥰
I have a $350 US Texan which is really good. Perhaps one of the earliest inspired by models. Is yours what they call a Masterbuilt? Thus costlier?
Yes, JP's is a masterbilt
Sounds great JP what are SGI pickups? Never heard of them. I’ve been experimenting with JJB prestige 330’s great clean sound. Would love a link if you have one for SGI. Cheers!
Texans have longer scales than most!
JP, you are a bad ass. Wow you are so good. And your videos are terrific.
There is one more “IBG” Epiphone that I would love your opinion on…
The Epiphone J45 Slash model. I’ve heard/seen what you have to say about Epiphone IBG J45 but this version has a few differences.
-finish
-electronics
And most importantly
-C shape chunky neck profile.
I’m close to pulling the trigger (online) purchase but I’d love your opinion on the neck profile and playability.
Thanks for the great videos. You’re the best.
John hits the sweet spot on the Texan.
Everytime I see a review of another IBG, I'm like ohhh that's the one I want now. Lol.... And I own an awesome 2016 Gibson J45. I own several guitars and the slipped shoulder is my favorite shape. Too have a few slope shoulders with different color palette is really appealing to me. Cheers!!! From AKA AFP!!!
Just picked up a Masterbilt Texan in Faded Cherry two weeks ago. Sweeeeet?
2 weeks ago. Sweeeeet
how is it bro? im thinking of copping one online rn. how is the overall resonance on that thang?
Have had one low end Epiphone. Started with a dr100, left handed versions. Epi is not a lefty friendly bunch for what is affordable for me, $500 ball park. Liked the song maker when l got started. Give them a nudge toward some left handed variety. You do wonderful reviews. Thanks
Great series of video on the Epi`s. Epiphone has been on top of their game since they came out with the Masterbilt line of solid wood guitars. My Aj 500 Rosewood sounds just as good as my `63 Gibson SJ but you are also talking about Mahogany Vs. Rosewood.
I hope they come out with the IBG Dove ! Now speaking of the Dove`s how about breaking the ice with a Dove ?
I’m a Martin HD28 kind of guy but these Epiphones are fantastic for the price!! I’m very impressed. If I couldn’t afford the Martins and Gibsons I’ve had then I would definitely buy these Epiphones!
Ya kne problem out of 20 hd28 15 I would pass on.
@@TruenorthmtGod ain’t had no problems with mine 🤷🏼♂️. Sounds fantastic! It booms and rumbles and you can feel it through your whole body
I have a 66 Gibson Hummingbird my dad played the opry with. I'd like to see a review of the new ones to see what they're like. Thanks
What kinda strings did you put on it?
new video idea A & B Gibson hummingbird and Epiphone IBG hummingbird, and ask them about your sig model: hummingbone. GIbson may not like it, but maybe it will get Gibson to actually better their Q/A. Epiphone is making great electrics too. I always have guys that own Gibson ES asking about my Epiphone Dot
Well, there goes another $700 out of the old savings. What a great sound this guitar has, just the touch of creaky old cheap guitar like a Stella, but rings out like a bell. I'm not sure how they managed this in what looks like just a regular J-45ish body with the usual assortment of tonewoods. I'm sure they studied the originals, but you wonder what magical combination of bracing and dimensions created something so unique.
Inspired by Gibson? I thought that is one of the new Masterbilt series
The guitar id lile to see you review is the Gibson Southern Jumbo. (my dream guitar)
I have my first real guitar it is a texan from 1977 I got it used in Altoona Pa my mother and father got it for Me and I still have it.
Hey JP, I have my dad's 1964 Epiphone Texan FT-79 (made in Kalamazoo). Darker burst but looks the same :)
Sounds great but you could make a whiskey barrel with strings sound great!
Doubt that bud
Would you get the Epiphone masterbilt texan acoustic-electric guitar or a Fender Newporter Classic. It's going to a beginner that will be playing old country music like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Johnny Cash for reference. Just not sure which one would have the best sound for that music, they both sound good to me I just clearly don't have a good ear for picking up some variations of the sounds as I'm sure they must have.
Thanks JP. Thought....why not check out some of your retailers in your description here. Looks like the Fantasie Music store link needs to be updated.
Are you familiar with Riversong guitars with adjustable necks made in Kamloops BC? And if you are what is your opinion.
Another great video Sir. I am going to review the Texan too, as soon as funds become available. And because of your review, of the "inspired by Gibson" J200, we purchased one and it was a cannon. So thank you for the valuable information and your opinions, as they helped in our decision to pick that guitar up. And I always mentioned that it was you who inspired our purchase.
Back to the Texan, I want to make a comparison video of the Texan from Indonesia, to my 1965 Texan FT79N from Kalamazoo. I can't wait..lol.
Keep up the great videos, I watch them all.
Gibson Hummingbird standard and J-200 JP!!!!!! Thank you, my favoutite guitarist, period!!!!!
Thanks John, a very good review. Could you perhaps review a Gibson J35? I'm thinking of getting a round-shoulder guitar. I like Watson-style flatpicking. I've owned Martins, Guilds, and Taylors, and I'm looking for something different soundwise. I like the plain unfussy look of the J35 plus the simple bridge style.
So which would you choose? Epiphone Texan or Yamaha LL16?
Wow, great playing and the guitar sounds great. I wanted one anyway but now I really want one!
The Beatles used and recorded with Gibson J-160E acoustics. They were laminate guitars though whereas the Texan they used was all solid.
Can you tell me what kind of strings you prefer on your acoustic
Wiz Jones played a 63. Look up Wiz Jones.
I'd love to believe you but what would Robyn say? I know who has your heart and I think that you would sell anything that made you a dollar
Perhaps if you visit a Cadillac plant they will give you a Chevy, but a really nice Chevy
Love your stuff JP! Please review the Gibson Historic Series J-185! Also the Historic J-35
Thank You JP, I Thoroughly enjoyed your review. You remain a resource and inspiration for musicians and particularly Maritimers . Question what do you use the teflon tape for that I noticed on your desktop in the background? Could it be a sticking string in the nut kind of thing?
I have the master built version of the ft-79 from 2020 and I like it more than my original 1962!
Just got the Masterbilt Hummingbird Epi. Very nice. Very nice indeed.
Yeah Texans are cool! I got a antique natural Masterbilt Epiphone Texan from November 2019 and I bought it used. Its broken in and it's a joy to play. Can't beat that Texan sound especially with older strings. You made a great choice!👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Just bought a used Ayers 12 fret slot head made in Indonesia and it is absolutely fckn magnificent. Cheap as chips, hand built, all solid woods. Amazing. Like k Yairi factory.
