Well said, Laurence. People often overlook the broader context and instead fixate on immediate shortcomings. When Ralf Rangnick departed Manchester United, he famously remarked that the club required "open-heart surgery," subtly implying that the root of the issues lies with the ownership, rather than just the manager, squad, or management team.
Since Erik ten Hag’s arrival, he has been burdened with the task of restoring the club to its former glory, yet without being provided the necessary tools. Critics who emphasize Ten Hag’s spending of over £600 million in transfers fail to recognize that Richard Arnold and John Murtough never established a system that would enable the manager to recruit players suited to his style of play. Dan Ashworth's comment on the transfer window is telling: "We've signed a lot of players unrelated to Erik." Until the club implements a proper framework for management, no amount of money spent on player acquisitions will yield meaningful success.
For those who question Erik ten Hag’s philosophy and style of play, it’s worth noting that he successfully instilled his approach in the academy from the very first day, and the progress has been remarkable. Winning a domestic treble serves as a strong testament that Ten Hag is guiding the club in the right direction.
Ten Hag has been compromising his philosophy from the very beginning(senior squad). Recall those early matches when the team struggled to build from the back, failed to recover possession while pressing, couldn’t maintain control of the ball, and lacked the confidence to push the defensive line forward to close gaps? He spent his entire first season adjusting, even abandoning the press at times. How long must he continue to compromise because the club has left the squad’s profiles so disjointed?
I would much prefer to see him resolutely adhere to his principles, revealing the squad’s flaws for all to see. This is the true level of the team; it’s time for the players to either sink or swim. I suspect that even Ten Hag is tired of resorting to tactics befitting a weaker side, especially when smaller clubs have managed to recruit players with better physicality, pressing ability, hold-up play, and positional discipline.
Ten Hag isn’t afraid of being sacked over a substandard squad, and I believe the newly appointed, experienced executives are fully aware of how far behind this squad is. This likely explains why, instead of pursuing marquee signings, they focused on bringing in replacements-though much work remains. Defeats will be inevitable and necessary. Too many managers have already been scapegoated to avoid losses, while the club has consistently failed to address the underlying issues within the squad. INEOS has only just begun to scratch the surface.

    • @saftsuparn3222
      @saftsuparn3222 2 месяца назад +6

I agree! I just dont see them sacking him, I also think that people are currently way underestimating just how much INEOS understand how to drive a sports team forward and to become a winning machine, they did it with Mercedes in F1(i know its not only them but iirc they owned about 33% of that team) and i refuse to think that they learned absolute zero from that.
I wish that most united fans can just take a chill pill, its our first season(2 months barely) with a full proper structure, let it work instead of disrupting it the first thing you do.

3 games into a new structure and they're calling for his head. Let's be clear, thus is not the United of a year ago. There is a _proper_ football structure in place for the first time in the modern era. The best in class in every position in the 'backroom' . Ten Hag may not survive the season, but he deserves a lot more than 3 games to try. It's not like Slot took over a team that was 20% of the way down 5 different paths.

    • @darthbauer5153
      @darthbauer5153 Месяц назад

I understand what you’re trying to say but you ignore most of that team are players he chose personally. He’s been there 3 years and no real progress has been made, they’re arguably worse now than under Ole his last game. Saying best in class back room is a bit much too, sure they’ve excelled in previous roles but plenty of teams have been extremely well run the past 5 years or so. Also that back room staff has no bearing on on field results, they’ll have the same players they let ten Hag buy and they’ll use the same fluctuating tactics ten Hag has employed since his arrival. If that backroom staff was as good as you say they wouldn’t have let an FA Cup win cloud their judgement and would’ve sent him packing during the summer. At this point yeah you have to back him because firing him 3 games in is a mess but firing him in June to give the new man a preseason would likely have changed a lot of the perception around the club and a lot of the complacent mediocrity that obviously exists in the club these days. Ten Hag may not be the source of all the problems but he’s proven he’s not the guy to fix them.

The transition will work in the end, but it takes a long time.
Ten Hag has the platers in defence now to play his system from the back, Midfield is still a problem, but Ugarte and Mainoo i have hopes for.
Up front the lack of goals is still a problem, Rashford is the only one who could potentially score you 20, but he's struggling. And all others are 10 to 15 goals a season max.

@@renatovannoortwyck3302lol finally someone else recognising the most obvious things. Everyone goes on about look how much money we spent under EtH but fail to see a large chunk of that was on Case, Antony and Mount who's barely played. As well as the fact that this summer we have essentially only bought potential players, no established first teamers to immediately improve the first team apart from De Ligt. Our entire midfield depends on a 19 year old with half a season of first team football. It's mad that people still think we are the United of old. We have no reliable goalscorers and we have 4 senior midfielders capable of playing in the PL with one injured, a 19 year old and one who we bought on deadline day. People really need to chill with their expectations.

If there was a better manager sitting on a beach somewhere, who would obviously and immediately transform THIS United squad from upper mid table to title challengers, United would obviously be foolish for not going to get him. As a Utd fan, I'm obviously fuming with the result, but I'm not overly disheartened by the performance. We might've squeezed a result out from that game if we parked the bus for 90 mins but we decided to play our game and unfortunately Casemiro had an absolute nightmare half and the game was done at the 30 minute mark. To play that way against a team of Liverpool's calibre, everyone has to bring their A game, unfortunately that didn't happen and we paid the price. But looking at the squad, and with some injuries to return, I'm confident that we can improve in those areas and develop. At some point, we have to abandon the park the bus tactics and find out which players have what it takes to actually play ball at this level and in this league.

Patience is key from jose to ole to ten hag every 3rd season this happens, but patience is key. Man united fans need to stop letting nad journalism influence their mind and actually dive deep for their selves or go to trusted, realiable and respect sources. Not channels or people that just spouts negativity with no actual facts because if they sack ten hag Manchester will always be in a loop of having 2 decent seasons and then third no patience. And realize the team we have isnt that great, frustration will arise but we still have to back this team and the coaching staff because no one else will do it. If the negative fans was there from the beginning of sir alex i pretty sure they would be saying sack him. Yet he is the best manager the club has ever seen. Patience is key, im not saying ten hag is perfect but you can clearly see what he is doing and its not like we didnt created chances. Speak with correct insight if its negative or positive but have insight.

This game proves fans are reactionary. Utd fans are thinking Ten Hag’s style of play is bad because Slot studied it before the game. That’s a stupid take because analysts study this for football clubs all the time so it doesn’t make slot a genius and secondly it doesn’t make ten hag’s tactics bad because up until now Utd fans have complained about United not having a style of play or system to rely on game by game like city have under pep or arsenal have the last few years. The season Ten Hag starts implementing his style of play keeping more possession, and atm united top the table for big chances missed showing we are creating better opportunities, the fans turn on him saying his tactics don’t work when he hasn’t had a full pre-season with his entire squad due to injuries, returning starts from Copa and euros and new signings only just arriving. It’s hard to go from an injury struck season playing long balls, counter attacking and sitting deep towards the end, to playing a high possession, high pressing attacking style of play in a couple months. I blame ten hag for not trying harder to train this group of players into his system and persisting with his system over results as in the first 2 years we saw glimpses but not much progress compared to now where we are playing better. Untied are defending better than last season we are pressing better passing it out the back better maintaining possession better and creating more opportunities. We are far from perfect but this Liverpool game wasn’t ten hags fault he setup a team to hold more possession and they ended up having a higher xg than Liverpool the difference was the clinical nature of Liverpool capitalising on our mistakes and then our failure to convert chances. Casemiro’s 2 mistakes put the game out of reach and it should be seen as a learning lesson as opposed to a let’s throw away all our planning and our ten hag project due to 1 game. I would much rather us play like this and lose than lose like we did both league games against city last season or the Brighton game at old Trafford last season or the anfield 0-0 where we sat back conceding 30+ shots yet celebrating a point. This game showed intent to play our style no matter the opponent if anything this game should hold ten hag in higher regard for united fans because if he sat back and we drew the game fans would be happier but we wouldn’t gain much out of it rather now ten hag knows Casemiro is defo not able to keep up with Europe’s best, he may be alright against a Fulham but the Liverpool’s of the world are beyond him and he also learnt that his side aren’t very clinical, aren’t very creative in the final third and need to sort out their mentality after going behind

Interesting reflections. I was going to say you veered off a bit at the end, but I think the subject matter leaves us all like that if we think about it properly. It's not very clear what is driving the specific problems and it's no doubt deeper than the surface level analysis we see everywhere from social media and the mainstream media.
I think the thing I find most disappointing about all of this is it feels very symptomatic of where we are in time more generally. Everyone has an opinion they want to confidently emblazon upon their chest, but nobody wants to take any criticism for it. As both the game and the world seems to get more complex in terms of the incremental things that make the difference, people seem to become more and more black and white in their judgment.
Watching football commentary and analysis seems to feed off emotions on the whole, and I feel dumber walking away from watching most of it. I had honestly considered just giving up watching it at all anymore, I'm really glad to say that after watching this I felt completely different.

I think the squad is not necessarily poor but still extremely thin. Gk has depth if not consistency yet. CB is okay but Yoro is out and that only leaves 3 decent ones, one of whom is not the perfect fit and one has started one game. FB is okay if everyone is fit but 2 LBs are injured and the other is 17 if high potential. In midfield you can argue that only Collyer, Ugarte, Mainoo, Bruno and Mount are up to it both technically and physically. Collyer has played 1 match, Mainoo is 19 and Ugarte has just arrived. Mount is injured. Up front Amad is inexperienced if promising as is Garnacho and Hojlund. Zirkzee is brand new and Rashford is yet to regain form. Anthony doesn’t deliver. Hojlund is also injured. None of the forwards are yet firing and some of the better players are injured or below their best so far (Bruno, Mainoo, Shaw, Rashford, Lisandro). Having bought so poorly in a variety of ways almost none of the 2022 or 2023 signings are significant positives ( Casemiro, Edison, Anthony, Hojlund, Malacia). Players should be hitting their straps after 2-3 years given bedding in time. The starting 11 remains weighted towards the academy, the odd successful signing and brand new players. If this years crop is decent, it will take several more years to fill the gaps (CB,LB,Midfield and world class forwards) and for the recent graduates to bulk up, improve decision making and get streetwise. Having said that it feels to me they are starting to make progress. It might be the case that they outperformed last year their underlying performances so progress could mean less points. Sometimes you have to improve the fundamentals before you see the results in sport or business. The big issue for Erik is that this is all brand new except for one thing, him. Given the hysteria surrounding United, the football pundit cliches associated with United “but it’s Manchester United”, “there’s no style” etc and the fact that many are deeply invested in his failure now there will be constant calls to sack him. This is ridiculous having played 2 of the better sides in the league. Patience is required especially given they probably should be on 6 points and have scored at least 1 on Sunday. What they really need is to score first, dig in, score a second, dig in again, frustrate and win the odd match 2-0 or 3-1 even if they are close. Next 10 minutes lads etc.

Look, we as fans can only Judge these kinds of situations by Sight and Sound. What we see and hear.
We have to go by Football Results, We would like to know more about the inner workings of a club, but that part of the Sport is not shown to us. Kinda like how Wrestling used to be when we were kids.
Now if the world of football chose to be more transparent and also allowed Players and Managers to speak their mind more, rather than these Boring, Generic and un-helpful Media Friendly sound-bites that are carefully rehearsed and orchestrated, then we would have more to go on, so that we can have a more informed opinion....
But the powers that be, deem that we are not WORTHY of knowing this, so we are kept in ignorance, and then we are criticized for having "un-informed opinions" and "being Toxic fans", simply because we are frustrated with how our Club is performing and looking for someone or something to blame, I really dont think WE need to be criticized for this at all, it is FOOTBALL it self that should bare the scrutiny of this.
Look at the 115 charges Man City are allegedly accused of committing, are they labeled TOXIC owners!!? Hello No, but we get labeled Stupid and ignorant, just because we are left with no choice but to strive in the wind, looking for answers to the despair of what we see on the pitch, week in and week out!

We’ve already gone through the cycle of sacking managers and we’ve just spent 200mil on ten hags squad minimum he needs until the end of the season.
The way I see it is ETH is in the 3rd year of his process, if he does well this season (top 4 or Europe & a trophy) he should be able too stay for year 4 of the process which should be top 3 and really challenging for titles.

As a United fan, I would be outraged by Ten Hag's sacking this season (bar anything truly horrendous happening). It's fair to say Slot has barely had any time in comparison to Ten Hag with his squad but Slot has inherited a successful squad that has been successful for many years. It's a very savvy appointment and he can quite smoothly pick up this project and play a fitting style for Liverpool. Ten Hag has underperformed with United and spending £600m+ is an awful stat to hear but I refuse to believe he's in any way responsible for spending £150m on Anthony and Casemiro amongst other transfer issues. It's his squad now yes, but it didn't start out that way, and it doesn't mean it should click straight away.
Last point, Frank Lampard of all people said he's got problems and perhaps he doesn't have the players to fit the style he wants but it's his job to fix those problems, not to wait for the right players to come in.
Verdict: He needs this entire season and beyond.

There are positives this season but they're minor imho. We press better and the transfer window was good. That's it. Our tactics this season still feel half baked while at the same time they don't work to our players' strengths instead our weaknesses are being exposed. The players' mentality and confidence can also be called into question. EtH should go back to the drawing board.

Hi Laurence, great video with some good points. As a neutral football fan, I think both camps (for and against the sacking of Ten Hag) have valid points and must be seen objectively.
    Supporting Ten Hag:
Things Take Time. Ten Hag is only at the start of his third season. You can draw many similarities between Ten Hag and Mikel Arteta’s early years as Arsenal’s manager. Ten Hag’s Utd won the FA cup and was runner up once, same as Arteta’s FA Cup win in his maiden year. Arsenal’s desired playstyle also really only came to fruition only in the 22/23 season after Arteta had close to 3 years in charge. I’d like to see what Ten Hag can do this season and hopefully the next, given backing by the ownership and confidence from the fans.
Utd’s club’s management was also previously in shambles (and maybe still is a bit shaky), and after the recent entry of INEOS, there’s a bit more confidence in the way ahead. Sacking Ten Hag and getting an interim/new manager with a new philosophy but inheriting a set of players he may not want will delay success even further. Utd must simply start learning their lessons from David Moyes era onwards - sacking managers repeatedly will not solve the problem, and only lead to an ever increasing number of players on the bench (i.e. lindelof, bought by Mourinho and is still on the team)
    Against Ten Hag:
Similar to the earlier comparison with Arteta - Arteta had a clear identity/philosophy from the get go, despite inheriting a really poor team. He stuck to his guns and slowly upgraded the players in all the positions over several seasons, spending prudently (Pepe was bought by Emery, FYI). He worked with the management to remove deadweights and players who were deemed to be unfit for his system. In contrast, Ten Hag has had a warchest to spend on players over the past two seasons (close to 600 million), and mind you, these are players he was familiar with and could play in his system. There is no way he can justify that he hasn’t had backing or the support necessary, when he’s gone out to buy all the players he wanted.
Decision making. His substitutions and support of players who cannot fit his system have baffled many - partnership of Maguire and Evans last season, even when Varane was fit. In the most recent game with Liverpool, taking off Garnacho and putting on Maguire, and repeated fielding of Rashford despite his poor run of form. You simply cannot preach to have a philosophy but field players that don’t fit your system, while leaving those that do on the bench. These players then get butchered by the media after a poor game - it's akin to throwing them under a bus.
I really do hope Utd return to their former glory, it’s what's best for the league - more healthy/unhealthy competition, more excitement. It seems the excitement nowadays is more on whether Ten Hag is getting sacked or not rather than the absolute great rivalries and derbies that used to happen. Well, we shall see what happens from here.

Just feels for me as a United fan, It was always going to be a tough game where players are playing a new highline that we've not played before and those who have played it before for pervious teams haven't done it in this team yet, de Ligt's first start and first with Martinez. They need time to work things out where they need to be and what to expect. you can see when Casemiro loses the ball on the first gaol the wing backs have already bombed forward and then need to sprint back cause Casemiro gives the ball away. time will help the team, ill I'm afraid of is Onana and his shot stopping failures.

I believe that we need to stick by our manager and our backroom staff to keep the dream alive, rome wasnt built in a day and our club has been in the mud for a very very long time. Erik ten hag knows what he is doing, the board know what they are doing but once our team has fully gelled and the plans have been ingrained into the players, i believe things will work out better than any rival fan wants.

Not a fan of Man United, but have no ill will towards them, even though in the 2000s I hated them with a passion as an Arsenal fan but I can see, once fit, United having a decent, dynamic first team. Getting Hojland will be important. But a team of Onana, Yoro, Mazraori, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Hojland, Zirkzee, Garnacho, Fernandes (as much as I can't stand him). That's a decent first team and then Ten Hag can build up the bench. But as of yet, Yoro has been injured, De Ligt and Mazraori have just arrived, Ugarte hasn't played yet and Hojlund is injured. And for all of the complaining about Zirkzee, he was in the right places last weekend, but didn't convert. Former strikers always talk about the goals coming when you're in the right place, it's when you're not in the right place, then you should worry. But he's where he should be and when Hojlund is back, he'll be raring to go. Why sack Ten Hag now? Pointless as he is building something.

I honestly think ETH will keep his job for 2 reasons. 1) FFP, it will cost United so too much to pay him off and will ruin INEOS's future plans. 2) INEOS's top tier replacements aren't available. If Nagelsmann was free ETH wouldn't have survived the summer. As things stand, it's early days and I think once ETH has all his players available he'll start getting some better results and get United to 4th/5th.

Coming from a rival fans perspective. They should keep Ten Hag at least for the rest of the season. United being a dominant powerhouse is a thing of the past, and honestly I don’t see them ever being the United of old again. I know United fans love to say their club has history, they don’t seem to know their history. Outside the tenures of Busby and Fergie they were a mid table side that would win an occasional cup, so you know, better than spuds at least. What top level manager in their right mind would want to manage a club with no basic infrastructure in the modern game. It’s just funny because United fans all complain about how they are Man United and they should be winning league titles every season when that hasn’t been the case for over a decade now.
