- This Dual turntable with Ortofon OMB20 cartridge/stylus sounds as good as some modern turntable/cartridges costing many times more. A lucky thrift store find.

Cleaning out and replacing the oil in the main spindle bearing can have a dramatic effect on speed stability. The oils in these turntables are over 30 years old and should be replaced.
Will give it a try if I can remove the sub-platter. The lift lever is part of the auto-lift and stop feature which cuts power to the motor. I wonder if there are electrical contacts under the lever that needs cleaning.
@@AudioTnT You can clean the speed selector contacts and the motor switch contacts. The sub-platter is only held in by one screw on the bearing well.
Very good info.
Very knowlegable and well presented
Very helpful and useful.
Danke für den Hinweis zur Laufgeschwindigkeit !
I bought a used Dual 701 in 1984 for $100 with a barely used Grado Prestige Black cartridge that rivals almost everything anyone wants to put up against it. But that's the effect that Dual has on audiophiles. We see the Dual nameplate and immediately think of the cheap plastic mass-market units that were ubiquitous in the '70s and '80s. But Dual actually made some very good, if not audiophile style, turntables from the '50s right up to their dissolution. And what's even more interesting is that many if not most of their cheap turntables were actually excellent sonically. Their silver plastic fully automatic turntable of the decade around 1980 was a stealth audiophile heavyweight in appliance store clothing.
Dual 1258 was just $200 USD new in the early '80s. The magic of that turntable, and most of the other basic models, was that Dual took what they learned from decades of making turntables, some of which were highly precise works of excellence, and put that know-how into making the least expensive, most functional turntable that they could. They obviously weren't perfect or luxurious, but they played as well or better than most other models available at many multiples of their price. The budget Duals proved that proper design and geometry in a turntable can be done at relatively low cost and yield results that are far better than any use of esoteric, elaborate, or novel designs or materials. Dual got the fundamentals right and in their basic models got results that far surpassed the performance of their peers.
In the 70s I had a Garrard changer & then a Rega Planar 3. Should have bought Dual. The semi-auto CS503 I found at thrift store w a Hana EL cart sounds almost as good as my expensive VPI turntable.
I just found one yesterday at a Goodwill for 15 bucks. It has the Ortofon cartridge. Didn't expect much from it but it rivaled my much higher end turntable and $400 cartridge. Surprised its in perfect working condition and the stylus is playing like new.
Great find 👍. I think the cartridge, tonearm and turntable are well matched. Rivals my VPI, Hana EL cart. Speed still wanders occasionally but resets when powered off/on. Cheers.
@@AudioTnT Thought my Ortofon Bronze would be a big upgrade for sound so switched out the original Ortofon. Nope. You are correct, the cartridge, tonearm and turntable are indeed well matched. Would be interesting to have been there when this was designed and who the mind was behind it.
The only things I find at the goodwill are low-fi plastic junk
@@jogmas12 I also found a Technics turntable in excellent working cond. and looks great once I cleaned it up a bit. 12 freakin' bucks!!
Der Plattenteller hat einen indiskutablen Höhenschlag.😱😱😱😱😱 Viele Grüsse aus Germany
Oh and if you could tell me what i should ask for when calling different record/ audio places? Are the the stylus readily available?
Ask if they have a manual Dual turntable. Most were automatic multi-disc changers. Stylus and cartridge are still available (Amazon, EBay).
Does your motor wobble a bit when playing? I have replaced the belt but occasionally the speed seems to drift. When I look at the belt spinning round I notice that the motor head seems to move from side to side whilst spinning. Is this the same for yours?
The motor is on rubber mounts for isolation, so movement is possible. Not sure if this is source of drift. I still get occasional speed variation but when I lift tonearm using the lift lever and set it down again, the drift disappears. Can't explain it. May try to see how lift mechanism works but requires some disassembly. Good luck. It's not reliable enough to be my main turntable.
Is that the only belt inside the machine at 3:17 or is there another belt underneath?
There is only the one flat belt, nothing underneath.
Ok nice but how do I change the stylus.?? I have had this 503_1 since 1984. I just need to be able to get a new stylus. Thank you
You pull the front section straight out. The new stylus will come with the front section which you plug into the cartridge body.
Thank you.
