Whoever heard this song in the 80s … sure cannot forget. Nikka Costa original version goes well beyond the maturity of her years as she was just a baby when released in 1979. Irene version is equally heartfelt and this duet with Rex just takes the whole emotional power a notch higher ❤❤

STUN.NING!!!! Irene has such elegance, if it is possible to 'belt' in an understated way, she nails it! Wonderful pairing with Rex!

I couldn’t see this beautiful classic solo song as a duet but it wasn’t too bad. Irene could have sung anything with anyone and done it brilliantly!

As a duet with guest Irene Cara and co-host Rex Smith, "Out Here On My Own" was a marvelous tour de force that lit up the television screens back on March 26, 1983. Irene, on the verge of her superstardom with her "Flashdance...What A Feeling" song, that was the showcase soundtrack song from that movie that was released in mid-April 1983, and this version of "Out Here On My Own" was sung with tenderness but also included a strength of further maturity, as though both Irene and Rex were in their 20s, with Irene, 24, and Rex, 27, there seemed to be a feeling that they both knew that something was going to soon be her big follow-up to "Fame" as a movie, "Flashdance", though she did not star in it, her theme song shined in it.
As for this performance, turning a solo song into a duet is not always easy, but Michael, your arrangement made it flow like melted butter, a special combination of blended voices and facial expressions that equaled Solis Gold.
As I notice that Michael Gore and Lesley Gore were the songwriters for this song, I believe that they were siblings and that Lesley was a child singer of songs from the early 1960s that included "It's My Party...And I'll Cry If I Want To" and "You Don't Own Me". Those became as iconic as her then-beehive type hairstyle. It unfortunate that Lesley passed on at 68 in February 2015.
As for Michael Gore, I believe that he was the composer in that same year of 1983 of the dramatic instrumental theme for the Shirley MacLaine comeback movie with Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson, "Terms Of Endearment", of which the song, even with no lyrics, rides like a roller coaster of emotions, with a slow and gentle beginning followed by an intensity that builds until it rides down to a denoument, then a soft ending. I think that is right up there with the best movie themes ever. I wonder if there are lyrics.
Anyway, back to Rex Smith and Irene Cara, what a duet of such a beautiful song sung here by beautiful people.
The arrangement was spot on, Michael. A winner in all categories. "Solid Gold" really struck gold in this duet. Splendiferous.
Thanks for both of these uploads. I missed them the first time around. I knew the song and the movie, but these performances really brought out different elements.

@@bigeyezzzzzzz You are welcome!!! That means a lot to me, especially at this point in my life. Your Michael Miller Time Machine helps to juxtapose the past and the present simultaneously.🙂 That is a work of art in itself. Bravo to that amazing ability and outstanding arrangements that brought out the best and could not be found anywhere else on television. "Solid Gold" was like an updated version of the old show "Your Hit Parade" and with musical and dance and comedy bonuses along all sides.💙 That helped and helps, to paraphrase Alan and Marilyn Bergman, keep the music playing to the present and beyond.

@@bigeyezzzzzzz Well, Rex Smith and Irene Cara harmonized well with this duet of "Out Here On My Own" from slightly more than 40 years. That was from her movie "Fame" and her movie "Flashdance" with its iconic Irene Cara theme song had been released just 15 days previously. With the recent death of another icon that realized huge success in the 1980s, Tina Turner, maybe both Tina and Irene are making beautiful music in the heavens above.

@jasonburger3533 The original song was by a young girl, 5 or 6 years old at the time in 1979 and her name is Nikka Costa

This is the same day she performed Flashdance...More Than A Feeling on American Bandstand with Dick Clark. (Season 26 Episode 29) Must have been in the same building! 🎤🎶🎶🎶

Was she on AB before she did Flashdance…WAF? I remember she wore a brown blouse with big shoulder pads and a black fitted skirt.

    • @starexplorers1202
      @starexplorers1202 Год назад +3

@@lindaalesia Yes, she was on AB in 1980. At that time she sang both Fame and Out Here Own My Own and wore a light-blue button work pencil dress. In 1983 she sang Flashdance...What a Feeling and wore the brown blouse and black fitted skirt. She probably changed dresses for Solid Gold.
FYI: She also wears that same brown blouse in the scene where she signs autographs in the D.C Cab Movie. It's possible she did both the same day. That's one busy lady!

    Des fois je me demande
    Où j'ai été
    Qui suis-je, est-ce que je m'intègre ?
    Faire semblant est difficile seul
    Ici, tout seul
    Nous prouvons toujours
    Qui nous sommes
    toujours atteindre
    Pour cette étoile montante
    Pour me guider loin
