    KJ is the best! In the past year, I watched a few of these videos and quickly realized that her style of teaching resonates with me.
    Then, I bought a few of her courses and I am a much better photographer for it. Thank KJ and your crew!!!

    I love this series Katelyn! As a regular KJ Student it’s so exciting to also get to watch more personal things like this from you here on RUclips. I’ve been intrigued by your family documentation and I feel more confident that I can start capturing my own in a similar way when my little boy arrives in June!

    LOVE it!! I am not a pro photographer. I just like taking photos of my family to make yearbooks and document precious moments in a beautiful and meaningful way. I can't wait for more videos like this with practical tips, especially on shooting. I had an issue of overshooting so now I follow a rule of only taking 10 shots. I also start with a goal in mind. When I reach my number, that is it. The quality of my photos have improved immensely and I am able to cull and edit on the same day like this I am done. Plus,my baby does not look annoyed at me anymore! :)

    My goal is to pick a spot in my home for my camera so I actually use it! I have been saying I need to do this for months and this video completely inspired me! I think I felt silly in the past keeping it out because we don't have kiddos yet, and I think our lives are boring...but that's just not the truth! We host a lot of dinners/etc. at our house, and we have a cute puppy, too! Plenty to be captured!
    Thanks, Katelyn!

    Thank you so much for this series!! Sometimes I just cry because I want to be taking more photos of our life, but I have to mentally prepare myself so much to do it. Not because taking the photos causes me stress (that's the part I absolutely love), it's the idea of editing the photos after! If you could make a video on this, I would SO appreciate it! Even hearing you say that you fill up an entire card before editing anything made my heart sink! So many of my photos go unused and don't get looked at because I can't find the time or motivation to edit soooo many photos. Thank you, Katelyn!

    I finally designated a spot for my camera to be out and accessible last week! I'm a little nervous about the 4 year old...no place in the house is safe from her, but hoping the camera stays safe. I'd LOVE to make family yearbooks so the photos are easy to pull out and look at! My two big struggles are finding the time and motivation to sit and edit personal shots, and figuring out the light and color in our tan/brown everywhere rental house (floors, walls ceiling, cupboards, counters, etc). We've been here a year and a half and I'm still trying to figure out how to make us not look jaundiced in every shot.

    Just letting you know those UV or sky filters can leave like a white or gray circle when shooting backlight even if its like high noon. It's just badd light bouncing back. I use to use filters all the time but decided to remove them once I found out it was making those weird white or gray circles. Sometimes landscape photographers talk about this.

      Maria I think for older kids, an actual activity might make taking their photos seem more natural instead of just capturing them being silly. Like “oh you’re going to put on a dress up show?! Let me get my camera!” Instead of just capturing giggling toddlers! I make the cover in Indesign!

    If I'm not working I just use my iPhone. LOL. But I would recommend maybe trying even a smaller mirrorless camera even with the basic kit lens if your not going for bokeh. If you use DXO PhotoLab 4 Deep Prime or DXO PureRaw Deep Prime you get two stops of noise reduction. Trust me when I say this DXO Deep Prime is ground breaking noise reduction. I will say this I like DXO PhotoLab 4 better then PureRaw because I can turn off sharpening. But their sharpening is very nice with lower ISO has a 3D look almost.

    Hey Katelyn, I know this is TOTALLY unrelated to this video, but I wondering if you could do a video on how you back up your files? I am a photographer, and I back up to cloud storage, I don't erase anything off my memory cards until it's delivered, but I'd like a more secure way. Especially on the way home from a wedding! I don't have cameras with two card slots, so I was wondering what suggestions you might have? Anyway, your videos are WONDERFUL! I love your precious family!

    • @KatelynJames
      @KatelynJames  4 года назад

      hi Hannah! I do love the double card slots. It's given me SO much peace about my backups! However, I have a portable hard drive that I have Michael upload to DURING the reception so that I can see if any files are corrupt before I leave for the night. This allows me to leave the wedding with almost every image duplicated and in two separate places. I also (just like you, use my cards as a triple backup until the gallery is delivered! Then we move our client's folder (of unedited, culled and edited images) to a DROBO backup system in our office!

    Love this video! What is your system for backing up the photos & editing them? Do you load them to computer daily and edit them, or once per month? I need a better system for family photos...1 year behind. ahhhh! Thank you!

    Thank you for giving people tips like these...♥️
    I just have a question...
    You mentioned lenses but they were Cannon. Thank al not a professional photographer, one day I want to become one by knowing how to deal with my camera to capture the light I see, but by now, I only can ask. My camera is semi-manual and is Nikon, can you tell me what lenses to buy in that brand or I can use the Cannon lenses you suggest here? I mean, do they feet even the cameras are from a different brand? Because my brother-in-law gave me a nice lens and it doesn’t fit my camera for real, my camera doesn’t recognize it so I can’t use it... 😕

      Hello! I wish I could help with Nikon lenses, but I am only familiar with Canon products. I am sure there is something comparable to the lenses I recommended, I am just not sure what they are.

    When taking pictures of sweet family moments, do you ever ask your kids to do anything? (Like, "Smile toward me" or "give them a hug") or is it mostly candid shots?

    • @KatelynJames

      Some sometimes!! But most of the time, the best images are the ones where they aren't smiling at me! I'll share more on this!

    Thanks for this! very helpful. A question about storing all the photos on that one SSD - do you make backups of it?

      @@KatelynJames not sure if you have already done a video about it - but would be interested to see what your process of backing up is? (for personal photos)
      For professional work i have a triple back up system (2 hard drives + cloud) - but for personal stuff i wonder if this is overkill.

      We use BLURB! And love it! I design it in SmartAlbums but there are so many options for designing it!

    Any tips for capturing older kids that are sick of me and camera (15yrs., 12yrs, & 10yrs)?? lol

    • @KatelynJames
      @KatelynJames  4 года назад +2

      shoot them when they aren't paying attention.... offer to capture something they LOVE the most.... friends, playing video games, etc. I have found that the best images are the ones where I didn't try to get them to pay attention to me!

    Wonderful tips!!! Being a film photographer, I leave my big Pentax out on on the kitchen counter (with a flash) so that I can snap photos the same way! Shooting film forces me to be very intentional about pressing the shutter, I usually take 4-5 images (if it's a big moment) and maybe only 1 or 2 for small stuff. This is Dr. Seuss week, and my 2.5 year old is dressed "wacky tacky" and I grabbed a quick photo of her headed out the door to daycare this morning in her outfit. That's all I need to remember the moment, not a 100 image gallery! I post my images to instagram of my family regularly :-) @jjhorton
