Thanks again John. Forty years ago I wanted to become a carpenter. Instead I went to school, and wrote software until recently. All the while telling myself I’d probably have become a good carpenter by NOW.
I’m retired NOW with 40 years of catching up to do, I’ll be 100+ . I don’t care, I’m loving every minute.
Your videos are tremendously helpful. I appreciate your time, effort and generosity. TY.

Thanks for this video. I recently acquired this exact model used. If the first item you checked, the vertical of the blade to the bed, how would you adjust the saw if that value was not 90 degrees?

Very helpful. Great video. I have a Hitachi 12 inch miter saw and it has been out of alignment since I don’t know win. I’ve had it for 20 years and was ready to just go buy a new one. I had no idea that you could adjust it. It seemed to make sense to me that you could but I never looked into it. Thank the Lord for RUclips. Now I will go and try to adjust it.

Thanks John. I've been having trouble with the cuts with my saw, and didn't know why. I put a speed square on it, and lo and behold the saw was out of square. When I checked the 45 after pulling the saw back the bolt was nowhere near where it should have been. I am so glad you mentioned that because I would not have checked it. So, thank you so much, you saved my life(so to speak).

Awesome post, sir! You saved me money and time setting up a humble home shop. I thought I'd just bought a lemon, a Hitachi C10FCE2 . It was never right in the horizontal plane, fence to blade. I had bypassed the factory detents the entire time I've owned it (5+ years). I ran it square, but never on the factory detents. I always ensured it was squared manually, and bypassing the factory settings. It was on my list to replace as soon as I could. I wasn't aware it was adjustable in that plane. Thanks a bunch!

My wife bought me a miter saw for Christmas one year. Right out of the box it worked perfectly. After about a year, I decided to check it for square. Low and behold, it was out of square though I was very careful with the machine. So, I adjusted it until it matched my machinist square perfectly. I did a few projects and not one turned out right. To make a long story short, this so-called machinist square was off by a few degrees. after it went flying across the garage, I got out my tri-square, readjusted everything and now it's perfect once again. Moral of the story: Check your squares regularly!

I too have had the same saw for many years. Its been dead on since the day I bought it. Only complaint I've ever had until I built a dust enclosure was the massive amounts of sawdust it created and sent everywhere, even with a shopvac attached. Great video. Always love the ones that shows us how to do it better.

That is one beast of a saw. I can see why you made a station for it. I've got an old 12" Craftsman that I've had for almost 25 years which is still going strong. I'm not using it everyday but it still holds its settings. Never thought about the five cut method. May have to try that next weekend and hope my opinion of the saw stays the same. 8-)

I don't know how people go without a miter saw. Mine is a 12" craftsman (non-slide) compound, and I love it. I now use an adaptation of that zero-clear backstop/flat deck like the one you made a video about. It pops off pretty easily for angles, but it's also the reason I haven't fine tuned my saw recently. Most used (power) tool in my garage.

Very informative video. If you loosen the three screws on each green inset plate, push the inserts inward until they are flush, make a sliding plunge cut, you will have a zero clearance inset plate.
    Thanks for your time

I have a similar saw, couldn't get the left fence to square up. This happened before. Had to remove both fences and plastic saw guides to get at the main pivot bolt. Unscrewed that and gently lifted saw off platform. The whole area down there was fill of sawdust. Cleaned it all up and put it back together. (don't overtighten pivot bolt) Works great now.

Just goes to show that you get what you pay for most of the time. I bought a bargain miter saw that I paid way too much for because I knew nothing about miter saws when I bought it, but knew I needed one to do virtually anything in woodworking. Frustration brought me here. I wish I knew then what I know now! Thanks for sharing this information. With any luck my bargain saw will actually BE tunable! If not, I guess I'll eat it as an expensive lesson. Cheers!

I am very glad you made this video. I have the same saw, I think we've had ours about the same amount of time (I bought mine in 2010) and for the most part I've been happy with it, but I have noticed things not quite lining up when I'm crosscutting a wide piece, and I've just sort of lived with it for a while, but now I realize that it is possible (and pretty easy, actually) to adjust this thing to something a lot closer to perfection than I've seen with it.

Hitachi is one of those brands I never know what to make of because they've got their hands in so many industries. I've only ever given this chop saw consideration because I knew you were happy with yours. Yesterday, I decided I'll have to get one to be able to complete my workbench. Between this video and the fact that the saw was $50 less than the next option, it was the obvious choice.
    ...I guess that's a long-winded way of saying thanks!

Even 5 years later, this video is so helpful & easy to follow. I was going nuts aligning my 45 degree angles for artwork frames with the saw bowing & had limited knowledge in to check/fix it. I even made a sacrificial fence (which was a waste). I also wonder if a 60 tooth saw blade would be better than a 40 when cutting poplar. Will try this first. Thanks!

Thanks so much for this John. I have a Maktec MT230 (non-sliding) which has a long single backing plate with 4 bolts. I had no idea they were adjustable until you demonstrated that. As you guessed, I didn't read the Manual! Probably I would have tried looking for an adjustment thingie underneath the round table bit that moves the angles, so you have saved me a lot of strife.

  • @morokeiboethia6749

If you have one on hand, use fine finish/ultra fine finish blades when calibrating your saw with wood cuts. They not only cut the wood but sand the cut edge as well and pieces fit together much tighter than cuts with a general purpose blade. I've noticed some plywood or lumber is worse than others about splintering on the edges of the cut edge. Splinters keep your cuts from sealing tight if they're left so either lightly sand them off or use a fine finish blade to keep you from getting them in the first place.

The Hitachi design of the handle is quite clever, all the forces of your arm are in line with the blade. With a lot of saws the handle is on the side and you have to push against a second switch on the side of the handle too which doesn't help with making a smooth up and down motion.

I'm also fan of mitre saws and find the better quality models can be extremely accurate, when used correctly. Saying that, I used to own a 12in Bosch saw that would badly flex from side to side and with little effort (it was second hand). I also find them to be safer than radial arm saws - when you let go of the handle, the spring causes the blade to retract and the guard slides in to place. A radial arm saw is always running towards you and you don't have the choice to cut against the blade's rotation.
Thanks for the detailed walkthrough on tuning your saw.

I have the same saw and have had two issues.
    1) The brake doesn't always work. The switch in the trigger is probably bad, but this shouldn't happen on a 1 year old saw.
    2) I spent a decent amount of time adjusting it for perfect accuracy. One thing I notice is that there is still some deflection on the cut. Almost like the cut is hollowed in the middle. I still have the stock blade, so that might have something to do with it. I intend to get a full kerf replacement eventually.

I purchased this identical saw at Lowe's about 2012 for a ridiculously low $299 and have been extremely happy until today. The miter angle has gone slightly out of perpendicular. I assumed that this could be adjusted for with the little knob at the front of the saw next to the handle, however when I tried to use this per the manual it unscrewed and the outer nut fell off. So off to youtube I go to see what I'm doing wrong. Your vid just made my day. All is well with the universe and the new headboard for the guestroom should be done soon. Thank you, Herr Heisz.
Incidentally, are you aware that the "sz", Ess Zet in German, can be replaced with "ß" ? Also known as a "sharfes s". The z has sharp corners, you see, just like the edges of the wood you cut.

I love my miter saw, never understood the hate some people have for these tools.

i agree, they can be very accurate if set up right, very quick and repetative cuts can be done, and they are super versatile, you can make anything from half lap joints to circles, even small amount of ripping, they are just so usefull esspecially the sliding ones, pretty fun too i guess

African Cichlids I don’t know what you have used but as a joiner by dewalt DW708 is more that accurate enough for joinery work. That’s only ever been adjusted once in the 15-16uears I’ve had it.

Did you not watch the video which outlined how to make them accurate? Just like any tool you want to have precision results from, they must be tuned slightly to ensure accuracy... heck I even tune/true up my skilsaw for framing applications. Even a powermatic table saw straight out of the box and every so often requires some truing/tuning to maintain accuracy otherwise it is like a high end rifle with poorly adjusted sights = inaccurate.

@@africancichlids3011 I’m not sure what field or country you’re referring to, but at least in US construction, the miter saw is a primarily finish and trim carpentry tool. It can be used for framing certainly, but pretty much every single finish carpenter you meet here is going to have a nice miter saw. I don’t even know what else you would use honestly.
