I wanted lemon drops and ananas chilies but I could not buy them commercially where I live ( Poland). I bought them on eBay directly from growers. I sowed them in February and they are only 4 cm high now. They are not sick, they had warmth while germinating because other seeds grew normally. The soil was ok each seedling grew in the same soil. This year it is 0 chilies for me :(

Clays a nightmare .People don't understand how hard it is to plant in .I always have to dig and add compost if planting anything .Well done and enjoy your holiday 🙂

My plot was on hard clay Ive top dressed beds with compost & manure for a number of years to improve it. I’m glad of the clay tbh cos in the drought of the summer (well not yet this year 😹) the plant roots can go deep into the clay for moisture. Clay is normally nutrient rich too. I’ve also done drainage channels too. This was all hard work but has left us with pretty good soil

Nice work. Looking good. I’ve got a week off next week so I’m going to smash it at the allotment. Got loads of stuff to put out too but it’s like a war zone outside of the greenhouse!

I put bags of leaves on my garden every fall, lots and lots of leaves. The soil they create is so soft I can plunge my hand in up to my wrist with no effort, and it is full of earthworms.

I think all gardeners will adopt this method when things get tight. It's the very best and most eco friendly and ancient form of compost.

Well done on your massive achievement. I have a green house bursting at the seams with plants already overdue for planting out, but hardly any space to put them! Not much time either, need a week entirely in the garden! Thanks

The latest thing I’ve heard as a slug deterrent is oats, which apparently they love but it dehydrates them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Happy Thursday JB.. I never tried it ,but maybe look into the old method of a slug trap... can or jar buried in the bed..fill with beer.. see if you catch any. Amazing amount of work you've done👍💞🌱

You get a tomato! You get a tomato! You get a tomato! 😄2 of my tomato plants are probably 4 times the height of yours, but I still think yours look better 🤪And have you tried copper tape against the slugs? Apparently that should work. Haven't tried it myself though since my little 3rd floor balcony doesn't have any slugs! Hello to the cute little robin @ 7:06 🐦Awesome progress with the planting out! Hope they don't all end up being a slug buffet 🤞Haha the human element... That just reminded me that that I forgot to water the 2 little seedlings I have growing in jiffy plugs! So thanks! Also, how the actual F would a mouse fit through a hole the size of a pencil?! Don't they have any bones? 😮

HibJB, that's a good tip, letting your seedlings grow to a decent size before planting out. I will definitely be doing that next time. Weather is so unpredictable this season. I've lost all my sunflowers except for one and sweetpeas, all been munched, nightmare 🙄 all your plants are lookingvreally god and your plot too. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

Ive had absolutely no germination of squash, pumpkin or courgette in two separate sowings. Indoors, with bottom heat, so not the weather. And a variety of different seed companies. All new seed as well. Whats going on!?

  • @emmastace2793
    @emmastace2793 3 месяца назад

After the weirdness with germination this year it has then be the armies of ravenous slugs and snails that are eating things they don't normally particularly go for - like tomatoes and potatoes. I've had to resow lots of things that are already late. At home I'm doing a regular 11pm murder mission, which is helping. I feel bad but after losing all my marigolds in two nights, I'm not feeling too bad. For the allotment I just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best. It's been awful.

I think I lost this comment while making it, so forgive me if I am repeating. Beekeepers know that a 3/8 inch hive entry will prevent mice from entering--even pygmy shrews--because of the size and shape of their skulls. So, if my conversion is right??, 6mm mesh should be plenty small. Of course, they will keep looking for openings and they are good at chewing.

My concern JB is with the twine you are using in the poly tunnel, it's not going to be strong enough when your tomatoes are heavily laden. It's notorious for snapping/breaking and biodegradable after awhile, please invest in paracord, which you can reuse every year and will last a lifetime. Well done for all the hard work ❤. Jo Devon 🙂

I'm using the stuff Steve recommended! It's very high ply and he said it lasted many years so hopefully they will be okay. They were great for the Toms last year!

Good luck little plants! It feels so good getting them out doesn’t it. Speaking from experience of putting plant labels in the ground in my polytunnel (trodden on, kicked, neighbouring toms being booted with my curious backside), I can now recommend tucking them into the string where you’ve tied it at the top or even better tying them if they’ve got a hole in. Fingers crossed for some sun and bountiful harvests!

I have domestic mice that I raise and mine are the small Swedish type, which means they are as small as wild mice. The mesh you bought, 6mm, is exactly what I use for my mice when I build cages. So you won't get any mice in that way, they can still dig in and make holes in the plastic to get in though. Love your chanel, have a nice day.

if it's not slug damage on the Brassys in the cold frame (always look under the trays) did you leave the lid open ungaurded, if they'd been out in the open I'd have said pigeon, could be mice lol super productive day there JB, I've been collecting Hymalayan Balsom & willow herb for compost, super mineral accumilators and there's a field full of them behind my house, managed to fill a whole pallet bay...phew

JB take the squash home and into the warm, those are struggling this year put them into the heat and they'll come, then you can put them back when they've germinated before they get used to the heat.

Double up the door mesh and make it overlap on the holes. Halves the size of them. Let’s see mickey get through that.
Also, I know it’s a pain but try a thicker compost mulch on your beds. I live in the northeast on thick clay and a 4 inch thick mulch is far more forgiving. You still top up the same inch or so per year ( perhaps more every 4 or 5 years ). Your mileage may vary but it has worked for me.

Heck I was puffed out just watching you 🌿 I've got lots of stuff to plant out - mainly flowers (a few tomatoes 🍅 and chillies 🌶️ too) I'm waiting for my son to come home on leave from the Navy hoping he'll give me a hand 🧑‍🌾 with my 4 year old grandson Noah pitching in too tho to be fair he just piles up little stones building volcanos 🤷🤦 🌋

When it is said a mouse can get through a gap as small as a pencil, it's a 'slit' as big as a pencil so you will be totally good with the mesh you bought so long as there are no gaps around the door frame. Personally, I'd leave a couple of spring traps out if they become a problem. 🐀🐁Have a great holiday.

I have perfected my slug defences over the years... green plastic anti slug rings are a winner..copper tape and copper mesh .. and my homemade anti slug rings made from 2 litre plastic bottles which last years but just need re copper taping annually!!

Not wishing to jinx myself but slugs have not been a problem this year. In fairness they just can't compete against two enormous woodpigeons that are nesting in my neighbour's garden and a remarkably healthy rabbit who has taken uip residence. Carnage! Hope your holiday is going well!!

I bet it's pigeons.. we have had tons of beetroot eaten this year (wasn't an issue last year) and our allotment neighbour even had her corn attacked (and it was a decent size corn!). If it's not slugs/snails, it's birds. Well done on the tomatoes! Cannot wait to see how many buckets you end up carrying home in a couple of months :D
