I was compiling a program of chamber music to present on radio (FMR in Cape Town) next week and, being Women's Month, I was looking for female composers across the various periods. I was blown away when I found this. Absolutely beautiful and I doubt that our audience has heard her work before.

I started with the Organ Symphony in E flat. I love discovering lesser known composers because I think most people can agree that common classical programs are ridiculously awful because the commercial side of music is full of fear. God forbid an audience hears something they haven't heard before. It's not like theres millions of people running to youtube to do that exact thing. Nevertheless Olla-vogala I send you my sincere regards and thanks for doing the noble gesture of sharing art with the world. As for this particular piece, it is nice all around. The final movement sealed the deal for me. Thanks!

I am with you on this 100%. Hearing rare works is very rewarding. What is sad is that our youth could be inspired by hearing the works of lesser-known composers - their ideas may spawn a whole new generation of creative musicians.

Beautiful composition and performance. I love to learn about great music that somehow didn't maybe win a popularity contest. Thanks!

Proof (not that any musician would say otherwise) that women can write every bit as well as men. A very good, well thought and skillful piece.

+Phil Homes Yes indeed! For other great female composers, check out my Lili Boulanger - Pie Jesu upload, or my Dora Pejacevic uploads (her Waltzer-Capricen for example).

Every woman that wants to write music does write it, the only problem is that there are little women who WANTS to write music.

That's not really true, because there's still a lot of prejudice against women composers to this day... read about Saariaho's history for example.

olla-vogala What i said is the same as the very known "if you want it, you got it". For me, the only "problem" is that women are not as ambitious as men are, no problem about that.
If there are some women composers is because they actually wanted to compose. What you mean with Saariaho? She is a very well known composers, what's the problem?

Not really, since you said it is the only problem: This prejudice is another really big problem too! What I meant with Saariaho, is that she experienced this prejudice first-hand, she almost wasn't accepted in the composition class etc. You can read about her on the internet. And maybe you heard about the discrimination against women in the Vienna Philharmonic? Unfortunately, the classical music world is still very conservative, as it has always been.

Så fint komponerat! Man häpnar! Min mormor Elin Ållander gift Erlanson var likt Elfrida organist i Göteborg och talade ofta varmt om Elfrida. Nöjsamt att höra!🙏🏻

This composition is mind-boggling in its appeal.
Can we have more uploads of Andrée with rolling score?

Actually, ladies and gentlemen, she's NOT unknown! She was an ardent feminist and a prime student of Gade. Her works do get performed.
It was the Nazis (and proto-Nazis like Nietzsche and Wagner, and their followers/admirers) who started the "men composers/musicians are best" nonsense. They also started the "Jewishness in music" nonsense as well, which so destroyed much of classical music, and ruined the careers and reputations of many, many excellent composers and musicians of all stripes.
Now, everyone's going to tell me that "Wagner wasn't THAT bad!!" But if you go and read what he ACTUALLY wrote (it's TEDIOUS, believe me) you'll see pretty quickly that he was, in fact, that bad.
I'm glad that that phase of classical music is finally fading away. Hopefully we'll start heading more music like Elfrieda's!
