Yes, the complaining part. In my country we have a culture of doing that on a daily basis. I really needed to be intentional to not complain and start being more grateful.

#1 - YES! Keeping abreast of current events and politics in my county ( the U.S.) has been making me distressed and depressed. I am learning to dial it back. I am trying to remain broadly informed, but not marinating in it every day.

Im a man with no kids, early thirties. I appreciate this video because sometimes you know how you really want to live but social conditioning makes you think it’s wrong to live simple . These are things I naturally want but until I’ve heard someone else explain it like this, it makes me feel like there are others who relate and I’m not just careless and lazy about “keeping up” with the rest of the world.

  • @meganrosecoach

I just want to say, I appreciate that you use your REAL voice in these videos. So far most of the minimalism/slow living videos I’ve watched have these soft whispery voice overs. They’re very calming yes, but I appreciate you being real so much! Cause it’s more like my personality :) and reminds me I don’t need to change who I am to change my life.

When you mentioned obsession with productivity I literally burst into tears. The way you so gently and frankly put it, "a list of things you did is not an answer to 'How was your day?'" has stunned me. How HOW did you break this way of thinking? Mine goes all the way back to my childhood. I am the oldest daughter of EIGHT children. I raised half of my siblings by the time I was 13. I've never had the freedom to not be productive. Now I have 2 kids of my own and I feel like their childhood is flying by and I haven't has the chance to savor it. Does you have other videos sharing how you did it? I would desperately love to hear more. Praising God that he sent your channel to me sister.

I always think of eliminating today’s news like the analogy of the Farmer in Feudal Japan…did he know what was happening across the world (or even outside of his own fief)? Did he care? Did it matter if he knew or not know?
No. None of it mattered. He was concerned with his own work, his own family, his own community , his own survival. He probably didn’t know there was a society outside of the island of Japan, (or just outside of the lands he knew) and he didn’t know any different. And he lived.
We had humans were not meant to know or worry about the concerns of the world. It’s one thing to be somewhat aware, it’s another to be engrossed 24/7 like so many are and have it destroy your well being.

I’ve also stopped keeping up with news. I’ve done this for probably 10 years and while I’m not the person you go to talk through the breaking news that happened last night, I am now the more calm and compassionate person that can be there for you when you need me. Ingesting the news was causing me so much anguish that one day I stopped and thought about how life was when I was growing up (pre social media) and then thought about about times hundreds of years ago. Most news doesn’t need an instant analysis. Now I’m also considering eliminating social media because the people who need all my “instant” news are already on my call list.

Sis YOU CAN COMPLAIN if you want to, your tired and overwhelmed. Your have to get out your emotions some kind of way, if you don't it will fester inside of you. Scream if you want, complain (not all the time) if you need too and cry to get all that sh$# out. Please ask for help as much as you can from your man and people you trust.

Not sure how old you are but what you are sharing is very wise. I was married at 19 and had my first baby at 20 and had a total of 4 by the time I was 28. We lived a very simple life with no TV, internet or smart phones from the very beginning of our marriage, very simple sweet times😊. When My husband and I turned 30 is when we got internet for the first time and we just got out first smart phones at 32 about 8 months ago. The reasoning why is my husband started his own construction business and he works from out of our home. I will say since bringing these technologies into our home it has only brought busyness and an uneasy feeling. I miss the simpler times, granted my children are getting older as well which brings more busyness then when they were littler. Finding balance in life is a struggle at times but nothing is ever born without travailing so it takes making these mistakes in life to want better for ourselves and the next generation. Wonderful video! Thank you.

Some people do not like the phrase, "Ignorance is bliss." But I have lived by it. At age 42 I was diagnosed with ADHD. But I was doing everything I could to keep up with my job ... I did not have time to learn about ADHD like I "should" have. I am now 58, and bullied out of my job of 30 years, I realize that my decisions to not watch news, not to buy a cell phone, not to read all job emails, and not to focus on being perfect allowed me to 'make it' to retirement. I love seeing someone sooo young making these decisions. . . You will be much happier in the long run!!💜💚🩷💛🧡💙❤️💜🩵🩷💜

Pretty much all these points resonated with me so much. I've been actively working on some of them but some are so deeply engrained and hard to break, or we dont even realize were doing them. In almost everything less is more and we are so conditioned that more is more and we keep pushing and doing and most of the time its only making it worse. Ive suffered from hormonal issues and terrible gut issues for years and only now getting more info about nervous system regulation and how even with great idea/lifestyle/supplements etc we are too stressed for it to help us.

Right now I deal with guilt over not getting enough done in a day. My husband is always telling me to relax. For some reason this is hard for me. Part of it is watching crafting/quilting videos and thinking making all these things will give me worth or make me happy. I need to stop watching ALL the things people are doing because it makes me feel lazy or worthless if I'm not making something beautiful ALL THE TIME! I am considering getting rid of craft supplies and learning how to play guitar instead or doing watercolor. I'm trying to decide what I want to do vs how I can use up the things in my craft room, which stresses me out.

I really liked this video. These things just seem so simple, and so obvious, when hearing someone explain them. The trick is remembering to actively integrate these things into my life - something to work on every day. Thanks for sharing!

Literally RIGHT before you mentioned you used to have acne, I was thinking, Wow, her skin is so nice 😊
Also, "Unoffendable" is such a great book! Highly recommend!

I love the part where you said "we equate productivity with self worth". And since you referenced so many great authors I have a recommendation for you - The Burnout Society by Byung-Chul Han.

Hi Jess, would you consider a deepdive into the topic of communication in non-aggresive way? When it's all good, I am very good at it, but when I get tired or something isn't working well then I switch to a way of speaking that I do not like about me. It hit me so hard when you talked about it.

I'm beginning to realize how badly my self-worth is tied to my productivity. Even though my body has been screaming for real rest for a couple of years now, I only allow it when something happens to my health, and only for a short time--not long enough for true rest and healing. Then I start back up full speed. The bursts of full-speed are getting shorter and the amount of burnout days and poor health days are getting longer. And STILL I feel guilty resting.

I agree with everything except staying informed is great as long as you don't abuse it. I think everything you said is sooo true as long as it is not taking from your life and YOU DON'T ABUSE IT. Do these things in moderation according to your needs. I mean, that's how I found your channel, looking for information.

Great points to think on. I'm continuing to work on my wardrobe and find myself getting rid of pieces that I used to wear and love but maybe now I feel they're a bit too revealing/short/etc. Interesting how our preferences change over time. I'm trying to find more midi/longer dresses. I really like the pattern of yours. Can you share where it's from?
