Also that Andor is a show for pretentious baguette eaters.
EFAP had a segment on an episode where they dissected all that.
Next thing you know Mauler is on SWT's podcast and they have surprisingly good chemistry and it's all chill.

@@casualduck7398 That's some old EFAP lore. You're not likely to get that outside of the *really* early EFAP episodes. I'm pretty sure it started with MauLer in his TLJ Critique.
MauLer was bringing up different film criticism channels like Jenny Nichols and talking about how some people aren't great at reviewing certain movies as opposed to others because they don't have any investment in the franchise in which to form criticisms.
In this segment, he brought up how much he loved one of Wolf's videos, but I can't remember which one, but he threw in near the end that he thought his Thor: Ragnarok video was "honestly terrible", because Wolf apparently didn't like that film. Someone went to Wolf's comments and said something to the effect of "MauLer's talking shit!", causing Wolf to check out that part of MauLer's video where he was mentioned. He commented "Them's *fighting* words", and I'm not 100% on this next part, records are dusty around this time, MauLer invited Wolf to hang out on Discord and then suddenly they're just friends.

Takashi Yamazaki. No question. _Godzilla Minus One_ creator should be put in charge of Star Wars.
He can direct a movie with slow character development building to perfectly-placed action setpieces that are tense as hell. He can write simple but lovable characters whom you know everything about in their first scene, but continue to surprise you right up to the climax. And he comes from VFX pedigree with a mind to push forward the medium without wasting the producers' money or the audience's time.

@@alexhayden219 I could see it happening, but it's a tell that the show itself is mostly shit but has a couple standout moments.
So I don't recommend watching _Steven Universe_ because it's a plagiarized, morally hypocritical, unprofessional, meandering time-waste that's 90% filler focusing on annoying side characters' first-world problems.
BUT, the show has a couple really good plotlines.
In that case, _if I knew the person was interested and gonna watch it anyway,_ I would comb through it and give them a list of the good arcs that actually have a story to tell, and bring it out to basically 1 season's worth of content that's half-decent and watchable.
The biggest difference between me and Theory is, if I have to go through all of that, _I don't call the show "good"_
Thing with MauLer is he actually _likes_ and considers necessary all of Buffy and Andor, he only says "just stick through the slow beginning to the good part" because he's seen that not everyone has the same mileage he does. But if he actually thought it was unnecessary he would tell them to skip it.

But there's A LOT of sludge to waid through.
What I can see being the most likely scenario would probably be similar to the prequels, themselves. Enjoyable, but mostly terrible. Some highs but lots and lots of deep down lows.
And, it'd just be more interesting to see how Theory reacts to a serious and thorough negative criticism of much of it. Go too soft and I can see him thinking they're "mostly in agreement."

1:26:00 Edwards was never fired from Rogue One, but Gilroy was brought on to do major script revisions partway into production and helped deliver a significantly different film, while not completely changing it from what had already been shot and worked on.
Regarding the Vader scene, it was basically the last thing that was shot. It wasn't the suggestion of a janitor or some other rando. It was Gareth Edwards and his editor, Jabez Olssen, working on cutting the film together. Olssen suggested that they needed a final badass scene for Vader. They discussed it, brought it to Kennedy, she greenlit it, and Edwards developed it with his team.
Edwards was involved in setting the scene up, but handed the direction of the scene over so that he could appear in it (he's the guy that pulls the emergency handle to shut the doors and detach to disembark - kind of the most pivotal minor role of the whole franchise, he jokes). The director was Edwards' Second Unit Director, Simon Crane.
In 2023, Freddie Prinze, Jr. revealed that it was actually directed by Dave Filoni.
Very shortly later in 2023, Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta, Rogue One co-editor Kevin Hickman, and reporter Roberto Gonzalez all basically said (paraphrasing here) that, as usual, Freddie Prinze, Jr. doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.

If I may add a bit to the Knifes Out talk, one of Columbo's shticks was that you knew who was the killer from start usually, there was maybe like one episode where they didn't di this. Rian's little reveal in the first Knives Out has been done decades ago....

    • @robmartin525
      @robmartin525 9 месяцев назад +8

      Yeah
      But Columbo was good

    • @samwallaceart288
      @samwallaceart288 9 месяцев назад +3

Yeah Theory's point is incomplete there; the real problem is the movie keeps changing its mind how smart or stupid a character depending on what the plot needs.
Colombo always starts by setting all the characters intelligence and skill levels right off the bat, and episode is watching all the characters react to the wild card who's Colombo.
But in Knives Out, Benoit Ransom and homegirl are all the wild-card at different points of the story, but the only way for the story to work is that they're all _actually stupid_ when the plot needs them to not notice something cartoonishly obvious, and _actually smart_ when the plot needs them to deduce something crazy.

    • @alexhayden219
      @alexhayden219 8 месяцев назад

Columbo's great. Rian's a fool that's followed by other fools that think he's a genius. Benoit's a clown that's right about one thing: it's just dumb.
Writing is hard and I'm impressed when quality of story and consistency of character lasts across a long running TV show, but the consistency of a main character should be fairly well established and understood by the writer that created or shepherded them. Rian's characters don't stay consistent scene-to-scene, let alone across a larger story or series. I view most of what Rian does as both intended parody and satire, but most good parodies still have consistent characters with established parameters. And I, personally, just don't find what he does very funny, even when it's clearly supposed to be.
Part of what makes it different than Columbo is this parody element. Where Columbo can be humorous, Rian's work is intentionally a bit ridiculous. What's frustrating is that people, including professionals in the field, think it's good at being a parody, a satire, and a mystery. It's not particularly good at any of those things. And a big element in all those things not working is consistency and believability of characters. I don't think it works as satire because it also doesn't have consistency of message and the larger body often doesn't support whatever otherwise sensible message is supposed to be taken - usually spoken plainly in dialogue near the end. This all applies to his other self-written work, as well. At least, the ones I can remember. I saw his first two movies years ago and didn't fully retain them or rewatch them.

If Johnson wrote it, Sgt Angel would be a big braggart movie cop who everyone laughs off as a dumb cowboy, and all throughout the movie you see him _NOT doing his paperwork_ "I'm all about the action, let the bureaucrats handle the rest", and half the plot would rely on Angel being fucking stupid and missing obvious clues.
But then midway through the movie we suddenly find out Angel's secretly a nerdy supergenius with a photographic memory, and all that time he was pushing paperwork and research away, it was because _he ALREADY KNEW EVERYTHING._ And the second half of the plot hinges on him being absurdly intelligent and assaulting guilty witnesses without a warrant because he "knows" everything that happened off-screen (including the innocent person who got murdered because he was so bad at his job a day ago but we don't think about that) and he ends up saving the day with a speech to the villain about how "life isn't like the movies."
Thank God we don't have that.
Wright/Pegg were wise to decide early on that Angel's character is to be taken 100% seriously, he's exactly as smart and professional in the beginning as he is in the end. And the dumbass comedy of the movie-obsessed cowboy is given to Teddy, whom you'd think could never be a cop but it's contextualised as him literally being the constable's son, and the general ineptitude of the local police department isn't _just_ a commentary on movie tropes or politics; instead it's contextualised plot-relevant, IN-story, that the NWA intentionally keeps their police complacent and unmotivated so they can get away with their social engineering.
Hot Fuzz is a great story, that happens to support cop movie tropes, biting satire, AND silly comedy. The cliché genre callbacks are a punchline on top of the already-functional story, they're not the cover the whole plot has to hide behind.

Mauler brings out of the best in people. One of my new favorite shows/podcasts.
And as far as de-canonizing everything in the Disney era, I think it really comes down to if those films/shows destroy or ignore pre-established canon or lack respect for the source material. For me that includes the Sequel Trilogy, Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ashoka and Book of Boba Fett. These products mess with the lore, disrespect established characters and their fans and fail to progress the story forward.
Alternatively, I believe whether or not you like Rogue One or Andor, those two films/shows ADD to the lore without destroying what came before and can easily exist within the boundaries of what already existed while adding depth and new characters.
Not sure how I feel about Mandalorian Seasons 1&2 (Season 3 doesn’t exist). I don’t think it detracts from pre-established lore but it’s difficult to say.

I'm glad the question of what you would do with RoS came up cause it's such a complex challenge, it might as well be a blank canvas.
The most interesting thing they did with Rey in that film was implying there was a dark version of her, which from the trailer, people theorized she could've been a clone, so I would probably run with that. Make it so she's a clone from a dead Sith that is waiting for her to be strong enough for them to take over. Maybe have this play into Theory's interest in Plaegueis and have her be his partner and the reason they waited so long to come back was to wait for their vessels to mature long enough.
You could have Palpatine knowing how to find the clones and kept killing them in their infancy, busting whatever operation they had set up, but once he was gone, they were free to experiment (evil broom boy, let's go). This could frame the First Order as this shadow organization that kept growing in the shadows and taking scraps from the Empire to grow in power. Snoke would still work as a defective clone and would frame his disgust for Kylo's admiration for Vader as his hatred for anything related to Palpatine.
For Luke, the best I can think of is Palpatine influencing him to force him to kill Force users, but when he tried to kill Kilo, that snapped him out of it and forced him into isolation. That way Papatine could turn his attention to Kylo causing his obsession with Darth Vader and influencing his decision to join Snoke as a spy so he can learn Plaegueis' secret.
With that set up, the film would probably consist of the sequel trio trying to find a way to prevent Rey from being taken over, maybe by destroying some secret relic or machine kept by the First Order required for the process, as they are being chased by the Knights of Ren. Ultimately discovering a fully grown Plaegueis clone ready to be taken over. Meanwhile, Luke's ghost would have his own spiritual battle with Palpatine for the soul of Kylo in order to prevent him from capturing Rey, which would imply that in TLJ, he knew this was the only way he could save his nephew.
Would be interesting to have Plaegueis' presence as this foreboding figure with moments where he takes over random people or droids.
Still, I can't think of anything for Finn, Poe or Leia, they can probably work on a smaller, more personal level, but it would take a deeper exploration of the script to do so.

I'd love to see an Edgar Wright Star Wars film. In all honesty, Baby Driver was pretty close to being an Earth-bound Han Solo origin story.
Obviously, I don't mean that the main character becomes Han Solo.
Wright had just come off of being let go by Marvel and Ansel Elgort really wanted to be cast in the Solo movie, but wasn't chosen. I don't know that either thing had anything to do with Baby Driver, but Miles (Baby) feels very much like a Han -nspired character and the whole thing seems like it'd work pretty well as a Han origin story, with the names and setting changed.
Anyway, I think Elgort would've been a better and more age-appropriate Solo, and Wright is just great. I'd love to see what he'd do in the Star Wars universe.

Give Andor a watch. On the 4th episode the show gets way bigger and paints an excellent picture of what the galaxy would actually look like 3 years before A New Hope. For the first time since I was a kid, this show makes you take stormtroopers and the Empire seriously.
It's biggest problem is it's a multi-character ensemble with many viewpoints, like seeing how imperial investigators _actually track down_ troublemakers, or seeing Mon Mothma as a POV character trying to forge alliances among the sheltered passive-aggressive elites in the government; but half these characters remain off-screen until the 4th episode so no one knows what the show is actually about.
It's like all those "hang in there it gets good" assurances, but this one actually has some worldbuilding and cosmic spectacle and monologues in store if you're willing to find it; not just 30 seconds of flashing colors and a dream sequence.
      Unironically my ranking is
      OT
      Andor
      PT
      Jedi Outcast
      Tartakovsky's Clone Wars
      .
