After replacing the battery and trackpad on my wife's Macbook Air, I was feeling brave about maybe replacing my phone battery. This video talked me right out of it.
Yeah me too, seems much harder than laptop battery replacement. I just did on my MBP a few months back and it was fairly straightforward. No way I'm doing it myself when it comes to my iPhone.
It is not problem unless you have iPhone X,XS ..., than you have problem of coding battery or it will show the old cyclus and service. It need coding with special tools and for now only Apple can do it (there are some electronic equipment, but I do not know how reliable there are9. Regarding MacBook, depending which is, it is not hard at all. You just need right screwdriver( you can buy it on net) open it from bottom and you can see battery and change it, it is not hard.
@@samirh8588 hi I thought that the new iOS update doesn’t reset the battery counter, that’s the problem with apple, they do anything to make it harder to replace parts from a 3rd part repairs same goes for the oled screen, it has to be coded
@@johnnyb3370 yes, and even if you take it to the Apple, they have to do the same. They made it on purpose, so you can not change battery without them. It is possible, but to buy all equipment just for one battery, does not pay out. But if you need to change couple of them , than it is worrh spending money
When opened, NEVER touch the FACE ID SENSOR near the front camera, It's VERY VERY fragile and can work bad after the process! (I'm a technician)
good to know altho u dont have to say u are a technician i trust u
@@johandreyer617 thx, you trust, but others can think I'm talking bullshit...
Ederson Lima well it never hurts to be carefull
@@johandreyer617 yeah 😉👍
I wish I read this before, I just did it, and my Face ID doesn’t work anymore
4 mins into this and I’ve come to the conclusion I’m not doing this 😂
4 seconds into this and i came to the same conclusion…
😂😂😂 the risk is tooo much. Im not taking my phone to a local repair shop
Apple wins. They could make this easy at no extra cost but consciously chose not to.
Haaaaaaa! 😂
Same here 😅
I always fixed my own phones when it was needed, the last one that I repaired was the iPhone 6, it was really easy!, after this video I’m going to pay for the first time to someone to fix my phone 😂
I appreciate the steps putting it back together.
Bro this video literally changed my mind about replacing my battery 😂 thinking about a battery case now
I know this is old now but I just finished replacing my wife's battery (I'm not a "tech guy" per se but I love working on it). Couple of things would be nice here as I went through this process: I wish there had been more discussion on how to PROPERLY adhere the new gasket to the speaker and screen, the video on another ifixit demo really doesn't show much other than a guy being good at it, I pressed mine in and applied hand heat before I took the final blue protector off and it still seemed to peel back off and became really messy, I wouldn't have guaranteed much to the "waterproofness" of her phone after that. And also getting the actual battery out was a HUGE headache until I used a couple drops of alcohol. The pull tabs on the battery must have been brittle so they snapped from barely pulling at all and I had to retrieve three of the four with tweezers and a tiny bit of prying without bending the battery too much. These were the only two steps that made it difficult but needed more explanation (or options for achieving them) than I feel was given.
This how-to video is quite an i opener 😱
Thank you your video made it so easy, took less than an hour and turned right back on
Followed this video and changed my iphoneXS battery in less than an hour. This is my first time ever opening a mobile phone to attempt something of this magnitude…well unless for Nokia 3310’s which pretty much came apart and together like a puzzle would.
Thanks for the video.
How does one fix the Battery Service-mode the phone goes into after that though? Has apple changed their policy on this yet? I read somewhere that even if you put a genuine from apple replacement battery, you’ll still get that notification on the XS and other models.
my god, i just finished the replacement, what an act!
and only one screw left over, which wouldnt fit anymore in the place where it came from, but it will be fine!
thx ifixit
Did you see your battery health?
I put an iPhone X battery in my XS. It fits and works perfectly plus i got some extra mah.
Does this really work? bc im nervous to do that and really dont want to fuck up my phone
Didnt know this worked. Does it really work? Also wont it give an error about the genuinity
@@Hfz9ly XS/XS MAX and XR have the chip that paired with the logic board. the best thing to do is to take it to apple
@@Hfz9ly I worked perfectly before the update they made a while back that says if a battery is “genuine” or not. Now it says its not an Apple battery even though it IS a genuine apple battery just for a X not a XS.
@@Root_Access so sad of apple..
Holy....They really caught on after a few years, and made it more difficult. This is reminiscent of the iPhone 4 which was also a pain in the ass!
Thank you very much for the video! My iPhone is starting to have battery issues (simply due to age) and I need to replace the back plate as it is cracked. May as well replace the speaker too as it is a bit blown. Great to see that I can get this done in (hopefully haha) one session. So this is very useful, thank you! (btw I'm an ANSI certified tech with about 5 years of experience, so this is pretty straight forward). Thank you again iFixit!
How did replacing the back glass go? Lmao
IFixit did not mention about the chip that tells the Battery Health which locks technician for a battery replacement. It will say “Service” when you go to Battery Health.
Yeah, I’m waiting for that.
Glenn Bonavente waiting for that actually..
you mean there is no way to change the battery whatsoever?
@@andersoncaviedes The battery will work fine if you replace it, it will just say service and not load the battery health.
@@Common_Coreless never ever went into that menu
The reassembly never mentions reinstalling the small bracket at the right edge of the Taptic Engine. This omission caused me to mess up my seal a bit taking the screen back off. My kit came with a new speaker seal, FWIW.
FWIW
Oh yeah wtf
Very easy install. Just keep your screws separated and you’re good to go! Expect about 90 minutes on this install. DON’T FORGET the small plate holding down the speaker connector like how they did in the video
You removed the speaker assembly don’t you think you messed up the water resistant adhesive ?
Thanks a lot for not plugging the screen adhesive replacement video and so manny steps left out of this video.
Thanks for the really informative video! If I have my battery changed through Apple, will that still impact the water resistance or do they the reapply adhesive?
What about the Battery Health, will it detect the new battery or there is some additional work for that?
In most cases if it is a third party battery, the phone will be able to detect, but not read the battery's health.
This is a lot harder than I thought... removing the speaker and Taptic Engine is dangerous
I don't have the steady nerves to do this repair.
The first few times are quite nerve-wracking, but you can get quite good at things like this
Should've assembled taptic engine and speaker before placing the battery, to avoid any errors in placement, but whatever 🤦
Regarding the charging method at the end. I thought that was only needed for older Nickel-cadmium batteries. Iirc, lithium polymer batteries don’t need to be charged like that.
Indeed. Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries do not like being drained fully down, they prefer you to charge them at 25%+.
Only Ni-Cd and Ni-MH need to be deep discharged to calibrate them.
spotify95 Its to calibrate battery health. iOS estimates battery health by taking how long it takes to fully charge and drain. Its also good to do once on a brand new battery.
Does the battery life say service after replacing new battery? Thanks
2:29 Why couldn’t they have added some extra battery capacity in that blank space above the battery. Also you charge $80 for a battery while Apple charges $70 including labor, they seal your phone properly, and there is no service battery warning.
This free space for the battery to breathe
If they make it bigger to fit all the free space it will explode
@@hasanainal-haddad8770 Yup, that's what happened to the Galaxy Note 7, there wasn't room enough for the battery to expand.
are u guys blind?...its space for the front facing speaker its literally attached to the screen and it fills the gap when the phone closes open ur eyes.
@@usernamepassword2140 dude honest i lost brain cells reading those comments
If battery service/ health percentage doesnt show up in settings it is because iOS Software disables it after replacing the battery.
What happens to the water resistant adhesive ?
I followed this tut exactly but ran into a problem.
Is there any reason as to why my screen would stop responding to touch right after i replaced the battery??
Everything is working perfectly with new battery except for my screen now not responding to touch, all cables are fine and connectors perfect
any help would be amazing!!
Hi, did you fix this this? I've just replaced the battery and the touch screen is not working... I can't unlock the phone
I thought the charging method at the end is a complete myth? I've never done it and my battery is 100% fine. Even when I replaced it.
Agiver Reviga Its to calibrate battery health. iOS estimates battery health by taking how long it takes to fully charge and drain. Its also good to do once on a brand new battery.
This is so infomative and helpful, I really liked it so much, thank you for this simplified video
After watching this video, I am confident I made the right choice by letting Apple replace my battery. 🤯
Hi! When you got your iPhone battery replaced, what model are you using? Did you lose any data?

Is it possible to open up display without removing tenpered glass for battery replacement?
Why is replace battery so mutch dificult ok phones do not have replaceable baterry from factory but still batery shuld first thing accessible after open phone not afrer remove half components from it.
Water resistance
Cause they wanna charge u extra for the replacements: a battery,20 bucks, their replacement in assistance 100 bucks or so
@@despacito311 OK but still why remove all components on bottom of phone to access pull tabs for battery removal? Water resistance require only hard to remove screen and back of the phone do not require remove internal component with 5 type of screw.
@@emacicc Yes I think this is real reason apple always hate unauthorized repairs.
@@martinpejchar9011 That's both, combine them and you get a hardly repairable phone, add a back glass and it's pretty much impossible, apple
Where do i find the BEST and Cheapest parts to IPHONES? / Sweden! =)
If the speaker is not replace with a new one the water resistance of the whole unit is compromised.
Did you know that if your phone isn't as good as it used to be, replace the battery! Performance should skyrocket!
Does iPhone XS needs battery serial number calibration? Will it show not genuine part after rebooting?
When a company are using 4 different size screws on one piece you know they do it on purpose to put people off trying to do it themselves...apple is always like 'remove the entire assembly to change one piece with 40 different size screws' 😂
It's really hard than iphone 6s and bellow
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for sharing
Does this have any side effects, just like changing the screen disables true tone?
Only that you’re going to get a notification saying important battery massage “ unknown part”
Hey! Did you just glue the screen back with its original adhesive? Cheers
2:58 Some extra space you got there?
Been repairing family and friends iphones for years ranging from 4 up to 8 but now my XS battery is crapping out I'm really hesitant...
thks
Hi there I don't understand your battery calibration technique since I have heard a lot that a battery should ideally always be between 40 and 80% and never charge it up to 100% if you want to keep it longer.
Or is it only for Android devices?
That’s only when you replaced the battery
Thank you it’s helpful
This is the long way of doing it. You don’t need to remove the bottom speakers or Taptic Engine. It can be done without removing them. Also the factory Apple iPhone glue is strong enough to stick back again.
I just did it and couldn't imagine trying to get the tabs out while those were present. Its already hard enough to get the tabs started, with the speaker and taptic engine in place I could foresee a LOT of people damaging those while in place. I'm sure people who are good at this can do it, but ifixit in my opinion is made for more average non tech people doing repairs.
@@SilentMott I agree with you 👍
@@SilentMott It's doable but very tough. I've done it 3 times without needing to remove the bottom assembly. Instead of pulling out the tabs like a normal person I used the dental floss trick while dribbling alcohol behind the battery, with lots more forced prying between the battery and the back (almost to the point of bending it). It's unsafe, but it works!
After change battery, my phone has been frozen always, could you please advise me what to do ?
get another phone....why do you think they make it so hard to replace a battery?
How do I reset the security feature when I replaced the battery with a new one it still said battery health was low?

iphone 13 mini. Used the device 8 months and see your battery will drop nearly %90. Is this normal?
Good morning
Does this battery have the same quality as the original in performance?
Not the 100% so no. It gets a little weaker tbh
Good
Can you do a bedrock replacement
Nice video, thanks!
I saw the body was bent?
Fantastic.
6:25 close the phone...get that crunch
What about reseting battery cyclus? The new battery (even it is original Apple) needs to have reseting battery cyclus, otherwise it will show the old battery cyclus and service. And for that you need some equipment to do that. You did not show or explain this.
Seems like they made it hard in purpose!
I’m pretty pissed I replaced the battery did everything right and now True Tone isn’t working anyone else have this issue?
I found out that replacing the display adhesive is mandatory because if you don’t the display won’t be flush with the frame and True Tone will not work at least from my experience I got my True Tone working by replacing the display adhesive
Can this be done with a cracked backside?
Weird question. Have you herd of ghost touching? My phone just randomly clicks on stuff. I’m told replacing the screen is will fix it then I’m told replace the battery and that’ll fix it. Do you guys know if either or both will work. I’ve done a whole factory reset and that didn’t fix it.
i suffered that to the extreme, it stopped when i replaced my old screen with a new one
Where can I buy the OEM battery for iphone Xs?
Impossible
No es necesario desmontar el altavoz y demás componentes para cambiar la batería 👎
Yh i tap out

Nice
My battery health is 96 in 20 days and i dont have bad chargin habbits and i also have original charger. What to do?

Man how badly have you hammered your phone to need a battery replacement within a year?!
MikeWard1701 no one does, but if someone needs to replace it in 2-4 years the vid is ready to help.
If you constantly use it from a 100% to a 0% with 100% brightness and heavy use, with a fast charger for sure you’ll need to replace your battery at least very year

my battery is at 92% and it stresses me out cause i’ve had it a year now now it drops even faster idk
Евгений Познянский mine too but after 1 year
This is… a bit more complicated than I thought. Might just pay for it instead.
Can someone recommended me an iphone xs 3000mah battery replacement brand?
How much does apple charge?
Be carefull guys, you cant just pull out the adhesive stripes like its shown in the video. They will break 100%. They are doing it on a brand new phone thats why its working.
What should you do?? Should you use some heat with it then??
@@timscholtelubberink183 something very thin and long, then commence *the pry of shame*
I do the same and replace the battery but after replacement battery health percentage didn't appear
What should i do?
Did it appear did you fix it?
@igho1298 Yes, i changed the battery board with the old one cause it contains some data now. It's showing health and recognizing the original part.
I will never understand why so many screws on every model they appear … if you remembered to use back everything in right place you are genius Xd
wow
I know right
Meh. I'd rather pay apple $70 to do it for me.
Ok who asked
@@gamingwithbryan8613 He was a point tho, if apple charge 70$ its $14.99 cheaper than buying the kit from iFixit and you will keep your warranty since, I think the original battery is linked with the phone
really? apple does that for $70. that sounds like a steal with apple being apple
and battery health? how to fix it? to show 100%?
I had 75% battery health and went to Apple store with appointment to change the battery for $69 + tax. Apple tech did not change my battery due to a small screen crack on left top. Apple needs the screen replacement $300 to do the battery change. Apple is now making it harder by showing service warning when changing a genuine apple battery or screen. Apple marketing strategy to push their new iPhone at full price instead of doing a needed battery change even when phone is fully functional.
You forgot something at 5:34😅
Honestly doesn’t seem that hard. It’s more difficult compared to an iPhone 6, but as long as you’re well equipped with tools and a legit battery, you’re good.
6:30
But why my battery health not showing up? After i change the battery
Not an official battery probably
Because apple
this is so much harder than a iphone 7 battery replacement
.....then, after you have the phone open and you've got all the screws out and the battery connectors unhooked and the battery out of the case, sweep the whole mess off the table into the wastebasket and go out and get yourself another phone.
Does the old battery jump out by itself after removal of adhesive? And the new battery, does it jump in by itself? That’s magic
That process is long. Only need to remove the screen to replace the battery.
Зачем так было усложнять
you only indicated to align the battery connector but never indicated when to re-insert it ???
Hey iFixit when do you recommend for me to replace my Xs battery mine is about 7 months
