Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin, John Wall who were all #1 overall picks also. Then you have Paul George, Dame Lillard, Donavon Mitchell, Giannis, and Iggy who all entered and who also who are all hall of fame bound and participated in the dunk contest. Nah, JRich was great from 2002-2004 (though he was a bit repetitive with his windmill). Zach LeVine and Air Gordon were great and Mac was great least year (hit all on his first attempts).

Vince time was his time, but a lot of dunkers can do the dunks he did today. Gordon can do all of Vince's dunks, but not only would Vince not be able to do some of his dunks, the majority still aren't able to do Gordon's dunks today. That's setting the bar to me.

It is funny that people forget that Paul George, John Wall, Giannis, DeRozan, Donovan Mitchell and even Dame Lillard all competed in it.
But the other factor is that most those guys were either not stars or early into their career when they did do it.
No one forgot, they just weren't superstars (like you said) when doing it.

It was team vs team format and they had a freestyle round in the beginning where all competitors just had nonstop running clock to just do dunks over and over. I only agree because the kids that are in the league now grew up watching Bron. So, yeah. It's one think to watch clips and another to see it live.
Don't get me wrong; I don't think it's entirely Lebron's fault that the Dunk Contest is what it is. But I think it's a bit ignorant to say Lebron not participating had 0 influence on it. The real issue to me is dunk creativity. These dunks are all cool, but all the same at this point. Lavine vs. Gordon was creative, and not that Mclung's dunks are bad (they're great actually), but unless guys start training with some pro dunkers to come up with dunks, the event will forever be stale with or without the stars participating.
The real problem is we've seen everything already. The human body is only capable of so much. I saw a dude last year do the exact same dunk Vince did and literally nobody gave a shit

To add on this, it’s worth mentioning that the Dunk Contest wasn’t held in the 1998 All-Star Weekend because of lack of interest among players. Even back then, people didn’t care about it enough. Vince would save it for a while, but it just went back to what it used to be the past few years.

The Dunk contest was a lose/lose proposition for LeBron. He misses a dunk, he's scrutinized by clowns like Skip and SAS for years. He loses the contest he's laughed at and called out for years. He lands awkwardly or tweaks something ... could be just as damaging to his career/legacy. He wins, what's the point -- he's expected to; and that trophy and any money attached to it is peanuts compared to what he's already making in salary/endorsements. No way in hell I'd risk any of that if I'm LeBron. The only benefit of those contests/challenges for players is to gain exposure and popularity. Bron didn't need all of that coming out of HS. Would it have been nice to see him try... sure.. but I don't blame him one bit. In fact, it was probably the better business move not to.

Kenny Smith has ruined the dunk contest with his negativity. If you go back and listen to the guys from before they were positive. Kenny just always complains so everybody at home here’s that and it takes the excitement out of the game.
It is ironic because if you look at the dunks, Kenny did when he won the dunk contest, they would be junior high school dunks today. These guys are able to do things Michael Jordan never dreamed of, but Kenny is negative.
They need to hire the broadcaster for the Charlotte Hornets, Kevin Garnett, and a bunch of motivated loud positive guys that would bring fun back to the dunk contest as commentators. Because the dunks are great, but when you hear somebody complaining before the dunk, during the dunk, and after the dunk, it just gets redundant .

They cancelled the dunk contest after Kobe’s. He did it in his warm ups and competed against some no names. It came back literally for Vince, then you had guys Dwight, then Blake, and PG-13 John wall, AG, Lavine. That gets you up to 2016. 2003 Bron did not ruin it
